Services for Louise Stevens Shipp, 88, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence. The Rev. Dr. Scott Robinson will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Eudora, Ariz. directed by Steele Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, 2100 Twin Church Rd., Florence, S.C. 29501. Mrs. Shipp died on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000. Born in Eudora, Ariz., she was a daughter of the late Ward W. and Grace Stephenson Stevens. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was associated with the Saleeby Center. Surviving are her son and daughters-in-law, Dr. Ray and Priscilla Bowen of Seattle, Wash., Betsy Bowen of Columbia, S.C.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, Dr. William W. Bowen.
ROBERT H. ELLIS
DARLINGTON - Robert H. Ellis, 61, died Wednesday evening at his residence after an illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery. Mr. Ellis was born
in Charleston, W. Va., the son of the late Rush and Mamie White Ellis. He was a former construction worker. Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Painter of California; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Joan) Bowles of Seneca and Mrs. Douglas (Barbara) Ritz of Darlington; two brothers, Emery and Ronald Ellis, both of Cleveland, Ohio; a special niece, Mrs. Todd (Nedra) Jeffords; a special nephew, Kerry Ritz; and several other nieces and nephews. Services for Linda Carol Brooks, 53, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Ted Duvall officiated. Ms. Brooks died on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000. Born in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of Alise Rollins Brooks and the late Atwood Alex Brooks. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, the Alter Guild, Adult Choir, former treasurer and youth choir director. She was previously employed with Mutual Savings & Loan and the First Federal Savings & Loan. She was also a member of the Hartsville Music Club and the Pilot Club. Surviving are her mother of Columbia; aunts, Madge Stewart of Columbia, Ruth Orr of Chapin, S.C., Dora Harshbarger of Huntington, W. Va., and Ethel Shumate of Oregon.

Ralph Joyner, 40, of Hartsville, died on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, in a local hospital after an illness. Graveside services were held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at 3 p.m. in the McCall Cemetery in Bennettsville directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. Mr. Joyner was born
in Cocoa Beach, Fla., and was the son of the late Lloyd A. and Margaret Mims Joyner. Mr. Joyner was a resident of the Thad E. Saleeby Developmental Center in Hartsville. Survivors include two brothers, Lloyd Jack Joyner of Augusta, Ga., and Larry Randall Joyner of Virginia Beach, Va.
MARY D. ASKINS
Services for Mary Evelyn Daniels Askins, 77, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at the Chapel of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The Rev. Askins Sr., died on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late William Anderson and Ruby Burch Daniels. She was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and taught children Sunday School class for many years. She had worked for Byerly Hospital Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband of Hartsville; sons, Dan G. Askins Jr. of Hartsville, Charles W. Askins of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter, Anne A. Smith of Hartsville; brother, James Maynard Daniels of Florence; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

TIMMONSVILLE - Services for Luther "PaPa" Chapman Jr., 67, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel, Hartsville. The Revs. Harvey Parnell and Joseph Morgan will officiate with burial in the Mormon Cemetery, Society Hill. Mr. Chapman died on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Joe and Charlotte Tucker Chapman. He was a member of Effingham Church of God and was a retired forester. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Darlington DAV #72 and Black Creek Coon Hunters Association. Surviving are his wife, Doris McCaig Chapman of Timmonsville; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny Joe and Phyllis Chapman of Society Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Jean Chapman of Society Hill, Florence Dale "Fat Cat" Chapman of Society Hill, Hilda and Phil Coker of Timmonsville, and Charlotte Ann and Duke Dodson of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Dewey Dean Chapman, Jamie Chapman, Vicky Chapman, Allen Freeman and Ashley Freeman; and a special cousin, Margaret Johnson.

Born in Marion County, she was a daughter of Clarence W. Turner and the late Amanda Caulder Turner. She was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church and was previously employed with Turner Manufacturing. Surviving are her husband, Dolan Wright of Hartsville; daughters, Shelia Shoemake of Hartsville, and Sharon Hall of Patrick; father of Darlington; brothers, Charles Turner of Timmonsville, and Horace Turner of Florence; sister, Doris O’Neal of Darlington; grandchildren, Art Shoemake, Arden Shoemake, Haley Thomas and Haven Thomas.

Services for Elouise Thomas were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, in Centenary United Methodist Church with burial in St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Wysacky Community of Lee County directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Thomas was born
in the Wysacky Community, a daughter of the late Annie Flemming. She, along with her family, moved to Hartsville early in life and she was married
to the late Flag Thomas. This union was blessed with one son, who survives her. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she served on the Usher Board. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 233 of Hartsville. Survivors are a son, Frank (Diane) Thomas of Hartsville; a brother, Willie (Wilhelmenia) Virgin of Hartsville; two grandsons, Christopher Days and Franklin Days; five nieces, Linda Bess, Geraldine (Jim) Zimmerman, Patricia Virgin, Cynthia Virgin and Crayona (Paxton) Simpson.

LANCASTER - Services for James Beauregard Steele, 83, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Ernie Thompson and the Rev. Sam Thomas. O.Box 990, Lancaster, S.C. 29720, or Hospice of Lancaster, 800 W. Meeting St., Lancaster, S.C. 29720. Mr. Steele died Friday, Sept. 29, at Morningside Assisted Living. He was born
June 25, 1917, in Lancaster. He was the son of the late Walter Lee Steele and May Cunningham Steele and husband of the late Mrs. Beverly Rush Steele. He was retired from Railway Express Agency, was an Elder Emeritus of First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, where he was a member for 83 years, and served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Steele is survived by three sons, James M. "Jim" Steele and wife, Mary Lathan, of Hartsville, Alvin L. "Al" Steel and wife, Susan, of Fort Mill, William B. "Bill" Steele and wife, Janet, of Whiteville, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Jane (Jim) Pierce of Spartanburg; one twin brother, William M. Steele of Kershaw; one sister, Mrs. F. E. "Tinnie" Kerr of Lancaster; 19 nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Steele, Jay Pierce, Scott Pierce, Macray Steele, Will Steele, Allison Steele and Baillie Steele.
LEATHIA HODGES
Services for Leathia Hodges will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janice Frederick-Watts, pastor. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Hodges died Saturday, Sept. 30, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born
in the St. Charles Community of Lee County, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Ada Wilson McCoy. She was educated in Lee County and Darlington County public schools, graduating from Butler High School, class of 1937. She also attended Claflin College. She was married
to the late James "Bubba" Hodges and this marriage was blessed with two children. Her son, James "Rock" Hodges, predeceased her. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church all of her adult life and served on the Senior Choir, Gospel Choir, leader of the United Methodist Women and as an advisor for the family and adult ministries. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Daughters of Ises, Crecent Court #143 of Florence. Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Hodges of Temple Hills, Md.; one granddaughter, Virginia Hickmon; special nephew, Hubert (Margaret) Montgomery of Hartsville; and a foster son, the Rev. Eddie Thomas of Bennettsville.
