RUBY MAY JORDAN
Darlington - Services for Ruby May Morrell Jordan, 89, were held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Central Baptist Church with interment in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jordan died Sunday, Nov. 19, at a Florence hospital. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late B. D. and Pearl Cassidy Morrell. She had retired from the Dixie Cup cafeteria and was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was married
to the late J. C. Whitley and the late Wallace Jordan.
Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Harry (Priscilla) Sawyer of Darlington and Mrs. Ed (Patricia) Gary of Marietta, Ga.
WILLIS W. GOFF JR.
DARLINGTON - Services for Willis Welborn 'Billy' Goff Jr., 60, of Darlington, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Goff died Thursday, Nov. 16, at his residence. He was born
in Dillon County and was the son of Elizabeth Taylor Goff and the late Willis Welborn Goff.
He was retired from Campbell's Soup Co. Mr. Goff was also an auto mechanic and taught auto mechanics at Sumter Technical College. He enjoyed motorcycles and building race cars. He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Willis Malcolm 'Little Billy' Goff.
Survivors include his mother of Darlington; one son, Jonathan Everette Goff of Sumter; one daughter, Angela Kay Goff (Jamie) Pilgrim of Darlington; one sister, Patsy (Roger) Hathcock of Darlington; and three grandchildren, Brad, Chris and Taylor Pilgrim.
MARY M. BAKER
DARLINGTON - Services for Mary McCaskill Baker, 80, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Aynor Methodist Church with interment following in Baker Cemetery in Marion directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mrs. Baker died Saturday, Nov. 18, at Medford Place. She was born
in Kershaw County, a daughter of the late Daniel S. and Bessie Hill McCaskill. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Woodmen of the World and Aynor Methodist Church. Surviving are one son, Warren (Nancy) Baker III of Darlington; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Jones of Marion and a special friend, Mary Mudd of Aynor.
DEWEY HAMMONDS JR.
DARLINGTON - Services for Dewey Woodrow Hammonds Jr. of Darlington, were held at 2 pm. on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Hammonds died Friday, Nov. 17, in Carolinas Hospital System of Florence. He was a son of Mrs. Lealer Mae Hammonds and the late Dewey W. Hammonds Sr. of Hartsville.
He was educated in Darlington County public schools, graduating from Spaulding High School of Lamar with the class of 1962. After graduation, he fulfilled his life of love and work by first marrying his high school sweetheart, Pearlie Mae Damon-Hammonds, and moved to Paterson, N.J., in effort to support and raise his family. The marriage was blessed with three children, all of whom survive him. His lifetime of work consisted of 28 years tenure at the S. B. Thomas Food Service Company of Totowa, N.J.
Dewey was reared in a Christian home and this early training took him through life as a God-fearing lover of the Lord. While in New Jersey, he worshiped with the membership of the Thankful Baptist Church of Paterson. After returning to his native home after some 34 years, he returned to his home church, the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Lealer Hammonds of Hartsville; his loving wife, Pearlie Hammonds of the home; two daughters, Yhonda Melissa (Lisa) Hammonds of Paterson, N.J., and Phoebe T. Hammonds of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; one son, Kevin T. (K-Star) Hammonds of Paterson, N.J.; one grandson, Kaivel of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Kadaisha of Paterson, N.J.; three sisters, Evg. Dorothy Coe of Florence, Bettye Coe of Hartsville and Theressa (Alphonso) Bess of Darlington; one brother, Freddie Hammonds of Darlington; his mother-in-law, Pearlina Damon of Darlington, many uncles, aunts, in-laws, nieces, cousins and other close relatives and friends.
DR. LAWSON BONAPARTE
DARLINGTON - Services for Dr. Lawson G. Bonaparte, 82, were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. James W. Kelly, officiating. Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Dr. Bonaparte died Saturday, Nov. 11, in Atlanta after an extended illness. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Matthew and Elizabeth Antrum Bonaparte. At an early age, he joined Bethesda Baptist Church, later transferring to Macedonia Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and superintendent of the Sunday School. His early academic achievements included elementary and high school in Darlington County. He received a bachelor of arts degree from South Carolina State University, a master's degree from Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta, a doctorate in education from Oregon University in Corvall, Ore., and further theological studies from Boston University in Boston, Mass. He was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II. Dr. Bonaparte began his teaching career at Spaulding High School in Lamar where he taught for many years. He was the Dean of Men at Voorhees Vocational School, later to become the chairman of the Department of Education at Talledega College in Talledega, Ala.
Surviving are sisters, Mrs. Cassie McCall of Baltimore, Md. and Mrs. Charlena Durate of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nieces, Mrs. Olivia Johnson, of Baltimore, Md. and Fredericka Simmons-Stephens of Atlanta, Ga.; great nieces, Demi Simmons and Corlis Simmons of Atlanta; great nephews, Donald Covington Sr. of Baltimore, Ralph Covington of Decatur, Ga. and Kevin Simmons of Lithonia, Ga.; other relatives and dear friends.
WILLIE J. ROBINSON
DARLINGTON - Services for Willie James Robinson, 75, were held at 12 noon, Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Mitchell Josey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. J. W. Kelly, officiating. Burial followed in the Florence National Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Robinson died Tuesday, Nov. 21, in St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. after an illness. He was born
in Sumter, the son of the late Willie and Alethia Robinson. He was educated in the Sumter County public schools. Later he continued his education at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. He served his country in the U.S. Army for 3 1/2 years and was honorably discharged. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church in Sumter for many years until he moved to Philadelphia. He was employed by The Container Corporation of Philadelphia, and later by The Crown Corporation in New York.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Grace Waddell Robinson of Darlington; a daughter, Gloria (Robert) Jones of Corpus Christi, Texas; a son, Willie James Robinson of Philadelphia, Pa.; a granddaughter they reared as their own, Sheila (Tony) Hurt of Hampton, Va. and two other grandchildren, Jennifer and Leah Jones of Texas; three great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
GLENN CADDELL
Services for Glenn Caddell, 40, of McBee, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, from the chapel of Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville with the Rev. Larry Melton, officiating. Burial was in the Pine Ridge Congregational Holiness Church Cemetery.
Mr. Caddell died Nov. 20. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of Mary Atkinson Caddell and the late Johnny Monroe Caddell. He was retired from A.O. Smith in McBee.
Surviving are his mother of Lamar; one son, Bradley Caddell, and one daughter, Tima Caddell, both of Jefferson; two brothers, Ricky Caddell of McBee and Pat Caddell of Lamar; one sister, Carolyn McLeod of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Monroe Caddell.
BILLY HOUGH
Services for William 'Billy' Hough, 62, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Kelley-town Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Anderson officiated with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Kelleytown Baptist Church.
Mr. Hough died Wednesday, Nov. 22. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Amos O. and Flossie Tyner Hough. He was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church. He was a lifetime farmer and enjoyed working with his wife at Hough's Flowers & Produce. He was formerly employed with the State Forestry Commission and was formerly owner of Amoco Sav-Stop in Florence.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Smith Hough of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Milly Hough and Rick Shackelford, Connie Hough of Columbia; sisters, Ann Shaw of Hartsville, Jackie Rosenteel of Apex, N.C., Cindy Owens of Ninety Six, S.C. He was predeceased by his first wife, Beverly Smith Hough. Billy will be missed by his loving family and his many friends.
ZIM G. BYRD
Services for Zim Goodson Byrd, 84, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, from the Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hamilton, officiating. Burial was in the Westview Memorial Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund.
Mr. Byrd died Monday, Nov. 20. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late James Dwight and Madge Goodson Byrd. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co., was a member of the Old Timers Club, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Living Hope Sunday School Class and a veteran of WWII.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Essie Johnson Byrd of Hartsville; two daughters, Dora Lee Phillips of Bristol, Va. and Shelia Wright of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Byrd of Hartsville; one brother, Emmett Byrd of Atlanta, Ga.; and one grandson, Jonathan Phillips of Bristol, Va. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Player and Laurine Johnson Atkinson.

Mrs. Copeland, wife of the late Roland T. Copeland Sr., died Friday, Nov. 24. She was born
in Florence County, the daughter of the late Gabriel Fairburn and Java White Carraway. She was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church and the Zeta Mims Missionary Circle of the church. Mrs. Copeland was also an avid gardener.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Barbara Hill of Columbia; four grandchildren, Barry (Hope) Copeland of Lamar and Sheri (Kenneth) Miracle, Jody (Melody) Hill and Sandra Hill, all of Columbia; a daughter-in-law with whom she shared a home for 40 years, Ella Mae Copeland of Lamar; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Copeland was preceded in death by a son, Roland T. Copeland Jr.; five sisters and three brothers.
