CASSATT, SC - Services for Dorothy "Dot" Hall West, 68, were held on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at 3 p.m. in Beaverdam Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Mrs. West, widow of Ernest J. West Sr., died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000. Born in Cassatt, she was the daughter of the late Cosmo A. and Polly Baker Hall. Mrs. West was a former employee of Kennedy Insurance and retired from DuPont. She was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sisters, Polly H. Leaird and Katie Sue H. Langley, both of Cassatt, and Nancy H. Jackson of Lugoff; two brothers, Paul C. Hall of Hartsville, and Jerry A. Hall of Cassatt; and several nieces and nephews.

LANCASTER – Graveside services for Robert Angus "Bob" Calder Jr., 73, of Lancaster, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, in Lancaster Memorial Park with the Rev. Mr. Calder died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Robert Angus Sr. and Bessie Bernelle Benton Calder. He was an employee of The Lancaster News for 40 years, a WW II Navy Veteran and a member of American Legion Post 31.
Mr. Calder is survived by his wife, Rose Rogers Calder; a special grandson, Linn Rogers of Columbia; two brothers, Kenneth Calder or Summerville and Harry Lee Calder of Hartsville; and one sister, Mrs. Bernelle Beckham of Hartsville.
CHRIS KAVANAGH
Mass of Christian burial for Christopher Michael Kavanagh, 17, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father Karl Roesch, Celebrant. Final commendation and farewell prayers will be in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Chris died Wednesday, Dec. 6. Born in Florence, he was a son of Kevin William and Donna Sweikata Kavanagh. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a junior at Hartsville High School and was a member of the ROTC and the ROTC Raider Team.
Surviving are his parents of Hartsville; sister, Elizabeth Catherine Kavanagh of Hartsville; paternal grandfather, Stephen J. Kavanagh of Hartsville; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Sweikata of W. Palm, Fla.; maternal great-grandmother, Margaret Sweikata of Levittown, N.Y.
LESSIE JOE DUNDY
SOCIETY HILL – Services for Lessie Joe Dundy were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Dundy, 80, died Friday in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Lish and Lillie Campbell Dundy. He received his education in Darlington County public schools, was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church, and was an Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Lelia Jackson Dundy of Society Hill; six daughters, Laura (John) Dundy of Winston Salem, N.C., Lelia (Monroe) McFarland, Betty (Levern) James, both of Society Hill, Lillie (Eddie) Gattison and Mabel (Tyrone) Little, both of Darlington, and Alice (Billie) Mitchell of Hartsville; five sons, Early (Janie) Dundy, Lessie (Naomi) Dundy, Levern (Debra) Dundy and Elijah (Gina) Dundy, all of Society Hill, and Jimmy (Verdie) Dundy of Winston Salem, N.C.; a sister, Mary Bonapart of Columbia; 30 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

LAMAR – Mr. Moses "Bud" Pettigrew died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at his residence. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar. The family will receive friends at the home of his son, Gregory Bernard Pettigrew, of 206 S. Darlington St., Lamar.
HOWARD HOPKINS
Services for Howard Hopkins, 73, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Middendorf Church of God. The Rev. Buddy Jones will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Mr. Hopkins died Wednesday, Dec. 6. He was born
in Bishopville and was a member of Middendorf Church of God. He was a retired farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Sallie Douglas Hopkins of Hartsville; two sons, James Alford Hall and Mark (Suzie) Hall, both of Hartsville; two daughters, Pee Wee Tucker of Patrick and Linda Faye Johnson of Columbia; and five grandchildren.
JOAN GIBSON
Services for Joan Emily Teucher Gibson, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 13, 2000, at the First Baptist Church . The Rev. Mrs. Gibson died Monday, Dec. 11. Born in Bristol, England, she was a daughter of the late Adrian and Rose Helen Flood Teucher. She was a member of First Baptist Church and helped in the Cradle Roll Department for many years. She and her husband were co-owners and operators of Gibson's IGA Foodliner for 25 years. During World War II she served as an English ambulance driver. She received the Americanism Award from the DAR.
Surviving are her husband, Hugh Eldridge "Hoot" Gibson of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Hugh E. and Estelle Gibson Jr. of Ft. Myers, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Donnie Smith of Hartsville; brother, Tony Teucher of England; sister, Sheila Edwards of England; sisters-in-law, Olivia Outlaw of Sumter and Lila Mae Boyce of Mayesville; grandsons, Adrian Daniel Smith and Corey Rollins Smith, both of Hartsville; and a niece, Aileen Abbott of Sumter.

Graveside services for Wesley Michael Sims, 18, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at the Clyde Church of God Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Sims died Dec. 9. He was born
in Florence County, a son of Jerry Michael Sims and Kammie Pate Sims.
Surviving are his father of Hartsville and mother of Pageland; a sister, Jennifer Sims of Hartsville; paternal grandmother, Willie Faye Sims of Hartsville; maternal grandfather, Donald Pate of Monroe; and paternal great-grandmother, Mimie Mullis of Mt. Croghan.

Mr. Evans died Thursday, Dec. 7. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late James T. and Sarah Dixon Evans. He was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. He was retired from Sonoco with 30 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club.
Surviving are his wife, Janice Brown Evans of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Paul K. and Tracy Evans, Anthony Brigman, all of Hartsville; daughter, Donna R. Carter of Greensboro, N.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Thelma Evans, Ed and Jean Evans, Gene and Peggy Evans, all of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane and Rabbit Faile, Faye and Willard Byrd, Brenda and Pee Wee Freeman, all of Hartsville; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, Darren Evans and Mitchell Brigman.

Mrs. Horton died Saturday, Dec. 9. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Arthur Matuse and the late Creola Griggs Matuse.
Surviving are her husband, Joel C. Horton of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Joey Horton of Lexington, S.C., Scott and Sandra Horton of Florence; father and step-mother, Arthur and LeFern Matuse of Hartsville.
ALBERTUS McCANTS
DARLINGTON – Services for Albertus L. "Buster" McCants were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, in Faith Apostolic Holiness Church with the Rev. Anthony McCants, officiating and Lizzie Mae Jett, pastor. Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. McCants died Wednesday, Dec. 6, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Albertus and Geneva Smith McCants. He attended Darlington County public schools and served his county in World War II in the U.S. Army form which he was honorably discharged. He was a member of Faith Apostolic Holiness Church where he was a deacon. Mr. McCants was employed by Southern Oil Mill of Darlington for a number of years until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lurline McCants of the home; four sons, Albertus (Donnie) McCants of Florence, Morris and Marvin Swinton, both of Darlington, and the Rev. Anthony (Gloria) McCants of Florence; a daughter, Ms. Rose Marie Smith of Darlington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nephews, Albert McCants of District Heights, Md., and Carey Witherspoon of Washington, D.C.; two brothers-in-law, Elijah Swinton of Bronx, N.Y., and Lonnie Jett of New Jersey; and other relatives and friends.
