GEORGE McCLAIN SR.
Services for George McClain Sr., a former Darlington County educator, will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. McClain was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Priscilla McClain, and was educated in the public schools, graduating from Butler High School with the class of 1942. Shortly thereafter he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served during WWII. After an honorable discharge, he attended Benedict College in Columbia, graduating with the class of 1947. He taught in the state of Virginia for a short time, but most of his dedicated work was done in Darlington County. He taught at the Rosenwald School of Society Hill for some 30 years, retiring in the early 1990's.
He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church, where he gave a full lifetime of dedicated service.
Survivors include two daughters, one son, grandchildren and many other very close and dear friends. He was especially close to the Spann and Frazier families of Hartsville.
ROWENA THORNTON
Mrs. Rowena Thornton died on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1306 Robinson Street. Hines Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
MARIAN BYRD
Graveside services for Marian Segars Byrd, 79, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bud Boatwright officiated with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Autism Society, 229 Parson St., Suite 322, West Columbia, S.C., 29169.
Mrs. Byrd, widow of Otis Byrd, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Burrell and Belar Newsome Segars.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Steve Fender of Greer, S.C.; grandchildren, Lauren and Steven Fender; many nephews and nieces.
MARY E. TURNER
DARLINGTON – Services for Mary Edna Humphries Turner, 82, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7 at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Garden.
Mrs. Turner died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in a local hospital after an illness. She was born
in Horry County, and was the daughter of the late William and Mae Ray. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Turner was a homemaker and enjoyed reading.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Ansel Humphries Sr.; two sons, Bobby Eugene Humphries and Franklin Humphries; and a sister, Thelma Hook.
Survivors include three sons, Henry Ansel "Buddy" (Debbie) Humphries Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Billy Ray Humphries of St. Stephens and Johnny Edward (Eva Jean) Humphries of Darlington; five daughters, Shirley Ann (Charlie) Watkins of Monks Corner, Edna Mae (Tollie Boy) Gainey, Mary Lou (Hoyt) Cooper, Linda Gail (James Robert) Walkup and Annie Ruth Humphries, all of Darlington; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
MYRTLE LEE HODGES
DARLINGTON – Services for Myrtle Lee Arthur Hodges, 79, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, in Lawson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilbert White, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hodges died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Leo and Ethel Boston Arthur. She was the widow of Darby Hodges.
She attended Darlington County public schools. Early in life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined Lawson Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Society. She spent all her life in Darlington County working various jobs and was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Cleo (Betty) Hodges of Darlington; a daughter, Ms. Virginia Hodges of New Haven, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. Edith (Nathan) Scott and Mrs. Ruby (Rev. Harold) Garner, both of Darlington; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

EFFINGHAM – Services for Ernest Borey "Buster" Broach, 88, were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Amanda Pentecostal Holiness Church, 4820 Pamplico Hwy., Florence, S. C. 29505.
Mr. Broach died Sunday morning, Jan. 7, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born
in Florence County, a son of the late Richard and Amelis Friar Broach. He was a charter member of Amanda Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was an original member of the church board of trustees and had served for over 25 years as the superintendent of the Sunday school department. He was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae Hatchell Broach, who died in 1991.
Surviving are a daughter, Janette B. (Rev. George Hawkins) Hawkins of Florence; six sons, Charles R. (Yvonne) Broach of Wilmington, NC, Herman B. (Betty) Broach of Hartsville, Ralph J. (Annie Mae) Broach and Earnest A. (Betty) Broach, both of Florence, Ranerson A. (Mary) Broach and Larry O. (Shirley) Broach, both of Effingham; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
RUBY WEBB
Services for Ruby Winburn Webb, 71, were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Robert Winburn and Carroll Pope, officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mrs. Webb, widow of Frank W. (Bud) Webb, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late John Perry and Eather Smothers Winburn. She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her sons, Frankie Webb, Tommy Webb, Richie Webb, all of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Dan Newsome of Hartsville; brother, Johnny Winburn of Patrick; two sisters, Lula Mae Boykins of Hartsville and Francis Timnal of Bethune; and three grandchildren, Daniel Newsome, Bradley Newsome and Allison Webb.
HAZEL H. JACKSON
Services for Hazel Howle Jackson, 85, were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Elder David Martin and Elder Jerry Ellison officiated with burial in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jackson, widow of Alfred Jackson, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lide Evans and Pauline Goodson Howle. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Surviving are her son, Bobbie Lee Jackson of Hartsville and a sister, Mildred Ray of Charleston.
PETER ROGERS
Graveside services for Lenneua "Peter" Rogers, 58, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, in Darlington Memory Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. Charlotte Walters officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Rogers died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001. Born in Mullins, he was a son of the late Charlie and Gossie Pittman Rogers. He attended Eastside Holiness Church and was retired from Ramada Motels.
Surviving are his sister, Shirley Carter of Hartsville, and a brother, Elton Rogers of Mullins.
BILL BURNEY
Graveside services for William "Bill" Frederick Burney Jr., 80, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, in Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church.
Mr. Burney died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001. Born in Bennettsville, he was a son of the late William Frederick and Lavoto Burney Sr. He was involved in two invasions during World War II and was retired from the U.S. Navy. He was previously employed with Southern Office Supply.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Ruth Ousley Burney of Hartsville.
BERNETHA W. McCRAY
DARLINGTON – Services for Bernetha Wilson McCray were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, in Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. McCray died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Taylor Wilson. She was a graduate of Mayo High School class of 1944. She continued at Megan College, Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a first grade teacher for 22 years with the New York Board of Education until she retired in 1990.
At an early age, she joined Macedonia Baptist Church. Mrs. McCray lived in New York for 50 years. In 1990 she and her family returned to Darlington. She then reunited her membership to Macedonia Baptist Church where she served on the Deaconess Board.
Survivors include her husband, Sam McCray of the home; five children, Frank (Dollie) McCray, Samuel Bernard McCray, Mrs. Theola (Auturo) Zapata, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joel (Gisela) McCray, Eric McCray, both of Darlington; two sisters, Mrs. Aileen W. DeLoach and Ms. Ruth W. Johnson, both of Darlington and six grandchildren.
