ELGIN MUMFORD
DARLINGTON – Services for Elgin Mumford, 34, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 in Glorious Apostolic Holiness Church with Bishop Joseph Hines, pastor. The Rev. Jeremiah Gravers officiated with burial following in Garden of Rest Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Mumford died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Monroe, N.C., after an illness. He was born
in Darlington, a son of Mrs. Carrie Joe Mumford and the late Robert Mumford Sr. He attended Darlington County public schools, graduating from Mayo High School class of 1984. He continued his education at Benedict College, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in history. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Fraternity Inc.
He was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. He worked various jobs, his last job was with Mecklenberg County Library in Charlotte.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Carrie Joe Mumford of Darlington; six sisters, Ruby (Fred) Tyson, Evelyn Mumford of Charlotte, N.C., Elizabeth (Ronnie) Phillips, Elouise Mumford, Mary Tyson and Carrie (Rodney) Washington, all of Darlington; four brothers, Robert Mumford Jr. of Baltimore, Md., Heyward (Eloise) Mumford of Darlington, Larry (Betty) Mumford of Lancaster and David R. Mumford of Atlanta, Ga.; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Marie Joe of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Mumford Lewis.
HELEN D. THOMAS
DARLINGTON – Services for Helen Dash Thomas were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Thomas, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell -Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thomas died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at her residence. She was born
in Orangeburg, a daughter of Wilhelmenia Harvey Dash and the late George Dash. She was educated in Orangeburg public schools. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, serving on the Senior Choir and the Kitchen Committee. She was employed by the Eugene Vaughn family of Darlington.
Survivors include her husband, Douglas Thomas of the home; her mother, Mrs. Wilhelmenia Dash of Columbia; a son, Kurtis Thomas of the home; seven sisters, Juanita (Matthew) Taylor, Catherine Osborne, Georgia Patterson, Mary Lou Moseley, Martha Jenning, Mary Sims and Eartha Dash, all of Columbia; five brothers, George Lee (Johnnie Mae) Dash of Philadelphia, Pa., James (Gloria) Dash of Orangeburg, Willie James Dash, Elder Isaac (Minnie) Dash and Wilbert Dash, of Columbia; brothers and sister-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.
REX M. NEWSOME
Services for Rex M. Newsome, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Tim Tomlinson will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Mr. Newsome, widower of Ethel Hoffman Newsome, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Russell and Pennie Kiren Newsome. He was a long time member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, Senior Adult Men's Bible Class and the Young at Heart. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company as an electrician for 36 years. He was also a member of the Old Timers Club, Woodmen of the World and the Moose Lodge #1770.
Surviving are his son, Lynn R. Newsome of Little River, daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Thomas Russ of Hartsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hugh A. and Margaret Newsome, R. Carroll and Marie Newsome of Beech Island; sister, Hattie N. Stewart of Beech Island; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
OREE SMITH
Services for Oree Smith, 75, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Jan. 6, in Vine Memorial Baptist Church, Philadelphia, Pa. Burial was in Fernwood Cemetery, directed by Wood Funeral Home. Young and Young Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements. Mr. Smith died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Philadelphia Hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Farrish and Hettie Fourtain Smith. He received his education in Darlington County public schools and entered the United States Army in 1942 where he was honorably discharged in 1946.
Mr. Smith was an industrious man, and was employed at Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point. In 1965, he ventured into self employment as a painter. He was a member of Vine Memorial Baptist Church, Senior Usher Board, Men's Bible Class and the Board of Trustees. Surviving are his wife, Charlyne Mae Joyner Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; five brothers, James Smith of Denver, Colo., Hayward (Minnie) Smith and Jolly Smith, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Harden Smith of San Francisco and Rev. Monel (Martha) Smith of Hartsville; a step-sister, Georgianna Wood of Winston Salem, N.C.; three step-brothers, Wilson Davis and Perry Davis, both of Hartsville and Henry Davis of Port Chester, N.Y.
ROY LEE THOMAS
Services for Roy Lee Thomas, 93, were held at 2 p.m.Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Kelleytown Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Anderson officiated with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001. Born in Troy, N.C., he was a son of the late Jehu and Fannie Hamilton Thomas. He was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church, retired from Binswanger Glass of Greensboro, N.C. and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a charter member of The Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Greensbobo and served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and Elder.
Surviving are his wife, Marline Lowe Thomas of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Lyndabeth Thomas of Myrtle Beach; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Mark Burns of Hartsville; grandchildren, Mark Burns II, Matthew Burns, Myles Burns and Lisa Thomas. He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
EULA JOHNSON
Services for Eula Munn Johnson, 79, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the First Church of God of Reformation. The Rev. Mrs. Johnson, widow of I. M. Johnson, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lide and Nomie Christmas Munn.
Surviving are her two sons, Willie I. (Runt) Johnson and Francis Ike (Snookie) Johnson, both of Hartsville; a step-daughter, Ovalene McDonald of Hartsville; three brothers, John Munn, Boyd Munn and Henry Munn, all of Hartsville; a sister, Doris Johnson of Wagram, N.C.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
ROWENA THORNTON
Services for Rowena Thornton were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Kingsville United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thornton died on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Johnnie Williams and the late Ellen Johnson Williams-Levey. She was educated in the Darlington County public schools and later moved to Washington, D.C., where she resided until her return to Hartsville in 1966. She was married
to the late Labarre P. Thornton. She was preceded in death by one son, Samuel.
Mr. Thornton was raised in a Christian home and her early church experiences were with her family at Kingsville United Methodist Church. She joined the First Baptist Church of Brentwood, Md., and served faithfully for many years during her stay in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include two sisters, Lula Mae Montgomery and Easter Wheeling, both of Hartsville; and two grandchildren, David and Stephanie Williams.
SUSIE B. DURANT
Services for Susie B. Durant, 87, were Sunday, Jan. 7, at Mt. Calvary AME Church, Rev. Willie F. Graves, pastor. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Durant died on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Berry and Annie Bell Rodgers Blackmon. She was educated in the public schools and was married
to the late English Burnice Durant and this union was blessed with eight children, five of whom survive her. After marriage she and her husband moved to Philadelphia, Pa., and later moved back to Hartsville. She was first a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. After moving to Hartsville, she joined the Mt. Calvary AME Church, where she was a member of the Stewardess Board, the Usher Board and the Missionary Society.
Survivors are three daughters, Charlena (Henry) Durant-Williams, Susie A. (John) Woodbury and Nettie D. Johnson, all of Hartsville; two sons, Burnice Durant Jr., of Florence and Jimmy (Betty) Durant of Mauldin; three sisters-in-law, 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
FLORRIE LEE DOWDY
Florrie Lee McPhail Dowdy, 45, of Hartsville, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 in Carolina Pines Hospital Systems after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of her father, Frank McPhail Sr., 541 Dovesville Highway, Darlington.
NETTIE MAE BRITT
DARLINGTON – Mrs. Nettie Mae Clark Britt, 80, of Darlington, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in a local hospital after an illness. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 3 p.m. in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Britt was born
in Marlboro County. She was a housewife and loving mother of 10 children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank M. Britt.
Surviving are four daughters, Frances Merritt, Barbara Walters, Cynthia Shumake and Sylvia B. Mattox, all of Darlington; six sons, Everette D. Clark, John Clark, Billy Clark and Frank Britt, all of Darlington, David Clark of Coward, and Larry Clark of Skytook, Okla., 32 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
