MARY D. SPEARS
DARLINGTON – Mary Dukes Mims Spears, 90, leaves a son, Russell W. Mims of Charleston and his wife, the former Mary Crum, a daughter, Dr. Beverly Spears of Florence, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Charleston, and the Charlotte and Atlanta areas.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Mrs. Spears died peacefully early Saturday afternoon, Jan. 13, at Heritage Nursing Home in Florence.
Youngest daughter of Minnie Pauline Boone and the Rev. George William Dukes, Mary Eugenia was born
in Orangeburg County on Sept. 10, 1910. The eight brothers and sisters lived in many low-country South Carolina towns while their father served the Methodist charge.
Mary found friends easily, entering into the community life and even playing basketball for Bowman though only 5 feet, 2 inches. Her graduating class in Lamar voted her Most Popular. There, a boy two years younger – George Spears – fell in love with her for life.
But at 18 she married
Clinton Mims of Lamar. She was just 21 when her husband's CP&L co-workers came and told her he was dead at 29, victim of service during a sudden violent storm. Their son, Russell, was 6 months old. Her family welcomed them back to Rowesville.
At 25, she married
her high school admirer, George, by then in the US Navy.
After a severe spinal injury on board the battleship Wyoming cut short after only eight years his planned career, the couple left Norfolk, Va., and returned to the Pee Dee – first to Florence, then to the Spears farm on Mineral Springs Road, and finally to Darlington. George died suddenly one peaceful Sunday afternoon in 1994. He had been caring for his beloved Mary at home. Since then, she has lived in Florence, most recently at Heritage Nursing Home.
Russell and Mary's children are Diane (Mrs. Gregory Saylors of Atlanta), Russ (Russell W. Mims Jr. of Gastonia, with wife Joan), and Janice (Mrs. David Flynn of Charleston). Beverly's daughter is Spears Mary-Francis (Mrs. Lee Cox of Charleston). Great-grandchildren are Gene, Courtney and Bradley Saylors; Amanda and Byron Mims; and Davey and Travis Flynn. Mary leaves one brother, Edward Dukes of Palatka, Fla., and numerous cousins in Orangeburg County. George Spears' brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews have been her close friends as well as family.
