JAMES MASSEY
Services for James Ralph Massey, 64, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Wilkes Chapel Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington. Mr. Massey was born in El Dorado, Ark., the son of the late William and Louise Hudson Massey. He was a construction worker by trade. Surviving are two daughters, Stephanie Ann Massey of Asheville, N.C., and Brandy M. Winn of Hartsville; three sons, James Ralph Massey Jr. and Theo Dwanye Massey, both of Arkansas and Ralph Stanley of Tennessee; and one sister, Patsy Ruth M. Cabaniss of St. Louis, Mo.

VIOLA C. BROWN
Services for Viola Cassidy Brown, 80, of China Grove, N.C., were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel of Kannapolis, N.C., with the Rev. Raymond Bailey and the Rev. Pearlie Peterson, officiating. Burial was in West Lawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, May 16, in Concord Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born in Chesterfield County on May 18, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Zadie and Eilly Eddings Cassidy. She retired in 1982 from the Number Six Weave Room of Cannon Mills Plant One, Kannapolis, N.C. She had lived in this area since 1965 and was of the Methodist faith and attended Boulevard Chapel in Kannapolis. Her husband, Colon Taft Brown, preceded her in death on July 22, 1982. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Douglas and Larry Brown. Survivors are two daughters, Willie Faye Morris and her husband, Howard, of Hartsville and Frances (Willie) Helms of Concord, N.C.; five sons, Joe (Sandra) Brown of China Grove, N.C., Carroll (Linda) Brown of Salisbury, N.C., Charles Brown, David (Betty) Brown, all of Salisbury, N.C.; three sisters, Essie Atkinson of Ruby, Almae Cassidy of Kannapolis, N.C., and Pearline Moore of China Grove, N.C.; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

J. C. HALL
Services for Jesse Claude "J.C." Hall, 83, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Amerson officiating. Burial was in Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mr. Hall died Tuesday, May 16. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Jesse and Eva Coventing Hall. He was self-employed as a drywall contractor and enjoyed auto races and fishing. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Hall Hall of Hartsville; son, Niles C. (Barbara) Hall of Hartsville; daughter, Vivan (Allen) Dennis of Darlington; a sister, Sue Hall Johnson of Cayce; grandchildren, Barry Lynn Woods, Mrs. Johnny (Tammie) Morrison, Tonda Woods, Mrs. John C (Chris) Atkinson, Mrs. James (Melette) Dixon and Mrs. Stephen (Claudia) Nettles.

GLADYS E. JOHNSON
Services for Gladys Elizabeth Johnson will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, the Rev. E. J. Squire, pastor. Burial will be in St. John Methodist Church, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson died on Tuesday, May 16. Born in the Lamar community, she was the daughter of the late Alberta Harlee and was raised by the late Washington and Lovie Moore Johnson. She was educated in Darlington County public schools, graduating from Spaulding High School of Lamar, class of 1949. She was married to Robert Lee Boston and this union was blessed with two children. She relocated to New York after high school for several years before moving back to her native Lamar in 1991. She moved to Hartsville where she worked at the Saleeby Rehabilitation Center, Coker College and later the Landmark Inn. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Bethany Baptist Church of Lamar for most of her life and lived next door to the church, which she cared for and maintained the same as she cared for her personal residence. She served her church in many capacities, including that of secretary, treasurer, choir and the Usher Board. After moving to Hartsville, she joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors are a daughter, Robin Jeanette (Ernest) Boston-Dials; a son, Malachai W. (Sandra) Johnson of Plainfield, N.J.; a brother, Woodrow Williams; three grandchildren, Earnethia Dials, Mecenia Dials, both of Hartsville and Carmen Johnson of Plainfield, N.J.; four great-grandchildren and son-in-law, Johnny M. Hughes.

EDNA C. THOMAS
Mrs. Edna Mae Chestnut Thomas, died May 18, 2000, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements are to be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 526 Hunter Drive.

GEORGIA WEAVER
Services for Georgia Watt Weaver, 71, will be held 11 a.m. today, May 19, 2000, at Lakeview Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Don Purvis officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennnington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church. Mrs. Weaver, widow of Troy Ed Weaver, died Wednesday, May 17. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Claude L. and Sallie R. Watt. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, Oasis, Loving hand Sunday School class and Senior Adult Bible Study. Surviving are her son, Danny (Patti) Weaver of Hartsville; four sisters, Dara Bowie of Ware Shoals, Sylvia Ray of Bishopville, Joan Privette of Columbia and Kay Yonce of West Columbia; and a granddaughter, Kelli Weaver of Hartsville.

LILLIAN GAINEY
Services for Lullian Robbins Gainey, 74, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 19, 2000 at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Homer Hinson, officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Building Fund. Mrs. Gainey died Tuesday, May 16. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late C.C. and Sophia Inez Dixon Robbins. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and was retired as the cafeteria manager at Plainview Elementary School. Surviving are her husband, Wallace Lee Gainey of Hartsville; two sons, Wallace "Skeet" (Rosemary) Gainey of Columbia and Mitchell (Jeanne) Gainey of Hartsville; three daughters and son-in law Cynthia Kelley and Dick Tyner of Hartsville; Sandra Morrison of Hartsville, Candee Gainey of Gastonia, N.C.; five brothers, Cliff Robbins, Jack Robbins, Marion Robbins, James Edward Robbins, and Archie Robbins, all of Hartsville; four sisters, Inez Burch, Sara Alexander, Peggy Evans, Linda Price, all of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Vincent Lee Gainey, Matthew Gainey, Andy Gainey, Mary Gainey and Lee Gainey. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Robbins and a sister, Edna Freeman.

MARY L. THOMAS
Mary L. Thomas of Hartsville, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, in Wilson Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of her nephew Clarence Muldrow of 1920 Governor Williams Hwy., Darlington.

EDITH W. JACKSON
Services for Edith Warren Jackson, 67, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Dovesville Church of God with the Rev. Stuart Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jackson was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Lide and Mae Bell Warren. She was a member of the Dovesville Church of God.
Surviving are one daughter, Darlene Jackson Boykin of Bishopville; four sons, James Warren of Dovesville, Joe, Steve and Mitchell Jackson, all of Hartsville; four sisters, Geraldine Barefoot of Hartsville, Gracie Gandy and Christine Warren of Dovesville and Carrie Ruth Livingood of Salisbury, N.C.; one brother, Lorraine Warren of Dovesville; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

JAMES B. LEWIS
PATRICK – Services for James Brooks 'Pete' Lewis, 60, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield. Mr. Lewis was born in Patrick on Sept. 5, 1940, a son of the late Brooks and Ruth Isgett Lewis. He was an auto mechanic. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by a sister, Valarie Dixon. Surviving are one son, James Dale Lewis of Hartsville; four daughters, Darlene Melton and husband Ricky Teal, Nicky Byrd and husband Ricky Byrd and Cindy Johnson, all of Patrick, Brandy Rushing and husband Mike Rushing of Cheraw; three brothers, the Rev. William Lewis of Hartsville, the Rev. Vernon Lewis and Jerry Lewis, both of Patrick; and 10 grandchildren.

MARLENE MELTON
Services for Marlene Odom Melton, 68, were held at 2 pm. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carroll Pope officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Melton died Friday, Jan. 19. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Raleigh G. and Corria King Odom. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Robert K. Melton of Hartsville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Wayne Melton, Ronnie and Janice Melton, all of Hartsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Charles Stephens of Hartsville; five sisters, Louise Davis, Eula Mae Streett, Ines Streett, Corria I. Odom, all of Darlington, and Verlee Lambert of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Jamie Melton, Winston Melton, Chris Stephens, Scott Stephens and Tonya Phelps; and three great-grandchildren.
