Services for James Melvin Tolson, 73, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Jan. 24, 2001, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boat-wright will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Mr. Tolson died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Luke C. and Carrie Byrd Tolson. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class. He was a retired farmer and dairymen and was a member of the Young Farmer's Association.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine Griggs Tolson of Hartsville of Hartsville; a son, Jimmy Tolson of Hartsville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and James Powell, Pamela and Harold C. Byrd, and Angie and Eddie Boseman, all of Hartsville; brothers, Leon Tolson and Lorrain Tolson, both of Hartsville; a sister, Emily T. Ritter of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Edie Brock, Billy Cross, Laura Miller, James Byrd, Trey Boseman, and D. J. Tolson; and two great-grandchildren, Bethany Byrd and Ashley Miller.

Services for Ruby Lewis Howle, 60, widow of Brooks Allen Howle, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at John Wesley Methodist Church with the Revs. John C. Smith and Wayne Howle officiating. Burial will be in the Westview Memorial Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Jan. 24, from 6-8 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Howle was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late John A. and Florence Webb Lewis. She was a member of the Kelleytown Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lisa Howle Gates of Hartsville; one son, Timothy Allen Howle of Hartsville; three sisters, Mrs. Mary McKenzie of McBee, Mrs. Linda Oneal of Hartsville and Mrs. Novella Gilbert of Little River; and six grand-children.

Services for George Yarborough, 79, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Melton and Deacon Pete Wilkes will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Mr. Yarborough, widower of Pearl Blayton Yarborough and Lula Mae Gainey Cagle Yarborough died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Calvin and Bell Freeman Yarborough. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church and was retired from farming.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Elizabeth Yarborough of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jean and James Ridgely of Jefferson, Md., Joyce Ann and Lagrand Hall of Hartsville, Annie Yarborough and Steve Cagle of Hartsville; step-daughters, Louiza McGee of Darlington and Francis Gainey of Darlington; a brother, J. C. Yarborough of Florence; step-brothers, Horace Blayton of Darlington and Jessie Blayton of Oregon; 43 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.

LAUREL HILL, N.C. – Funeral services for Nancy Beckham Garner, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Laurel Hill United Methodist Church officiated by the Revs. Keith Brown and Frances Brown. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville directed by McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium of Laurinburg, N.C. Mrs. Garner died Monday, Jan. 22, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Born June 6, 1919, in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late State Rep. Paul T. Beckham and Lessie Helms Beckham and widow of the late James A. Garner. She was a very active member of Laurel Hill United Methodist Church and was also active in the Rockingham District of the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by two daughters, Claire Garner Pearson of Laurinburg and Martha Garner of Randolph, N.J.; two brothers, Robert C. Beckham and Hervey E. Beckham of Augusta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Nancy Ingram of Laurinburg and Vance Pearson of Laurel Hill; and five great-grandchildren.

BARNWELL – Services for Rodney B. (Chip) Johnson Jr., 36, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the First Baptist Church, Allendale, with burial to following in the Swallow Savannah Cemetery directed by Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale.
Mr. Johnson died Friday, Jan. 26, at his residence in Barnwell. Born in Hartsville, Oct. 22, 1964, he was a son of R. B. Johnson and Alice Gainey Johnson. He was an active duty veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a construction worker with Erco Corporation in Barnwell until an accident left him permanently disabled. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Hartsville.
Surviving are his parents of Hartsville; two sons, Cody Johnson of Hartsville and Austin Johnson of Barnwell; two daughters, Ashley Johnson of Hartsville and Taylor McBride of Barnwell; and a brother, Bruce Johnson of Hartsville. He was predeceased by a sister, Cathy Johnson.
JOHN C. PATRICK
DARLINGTON – Services for John Calhoun "Jack" Patrick, 75, were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at First Baptist Church with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Mr. Patrick died on Saturday, Jan. 27. Born in Burlington, N.C., he was the son of the late James Everette and Ethel Woodard Patrick. Mr. Patrick served his country during World War II in the Army Infantry and was a retired Power Department Supervisor at Sonoco. He was a part-time driver at Clanton's Auto Auction and a volunteer with The Lord Cares Ministry. Mr. Patrick enjoyed fishing, playing golf and watching the Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include two sons, Donald (Julie) Patrick and Thomas Andrew "Tommy" (Fran) Patrick, both of Darlington; one daughter, Patricia L. "Trish" (Clyde) Carter of Hartsville; one sister, Paddy Jo (Frank) Lemon of Darlington; eight grandchildren, Jason Patrick, Jessica Patrick Clemmons, April May June, J.J. June, Todd Carter, Eric Carter, Drew Patrick, and Adam Patrick; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan Carter and Billy Clemmons.
Mr. Patrick was predeceased by his wife, Wilma Louise Andrews Patrick in 1989.

TIMMONSVILLE – Services for Obey E. Martin Sr., Gospel Music D.J., were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Shiloh United Methodist Church, Syracuse Community, Darlington, with the Rev. William S. James, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Martin-Ham Memorial Garden directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Martin died Wednesday, Jan. 24, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Wilson and Janie Ham Martin. He received his education in Darlington County public schools and Florence-Darlington Technical College, where he received a certificate in electrical engineering and communication broadcasting. He was a life member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where he served with the United Methodist Men as a Sunday School teacher and in several other capacities.
He was employed by several broadcasting radio stations, WYNN, and his last employment was 20 years with WWDM Gospel Station. He also spearheaded countless church and community events.
He served his tenure in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Rosetta H. Martin of the home; four sons, Obey (Tarsha) Martin Jr., Corenthious Mark Martin and Josepher (LaToya) Martin, all of Timmonsville, and Melvin (Tracy) Johnson of Petersburg, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Fentress (Charles) Jones of District Heights, Md.; five grandsons, five granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; Mrs. Beulah Byrd Martin and Ms. Loner Martin, both of Timmonsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

MYRTLE BEACH – Services for Robert Dewey Brown Jr., 76, will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, Jan. 31, 2001, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home Chapel in Myrtle Beach with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Brown officiating. Burial will be private in Florence National Cemetery.

Mr. Brown died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
He was born
May 18, 1924, in Hartsville, a son of Robert Dewey and Mattie Christine Warren Brown. He was the widower of Jean Brown. He was a retired manager of an Esso Service Station in Hartsville, a veteran of World War II and had moved to Myrtle Beach from Johnson City, Tenn., four years ago.
Survivors include a son, Frankie Brown of Florence; a sister, Mildred Bitterman of Myrtle Beach; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
