HENRY JAMES SR.
DARLINGTON – Services for Henry James Sr. were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. James E. Moore, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Mitchell Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. James died Wednesday, Feb. 21, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington, a son of the late Mack and Caperta Davis James. He was the widower of Mrs. Beulah Brown James. He received his formal education in Darlington County public schools. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. He was employed by the city of Darlington for 38 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth (Joseph) James of Bronx, N.Y., and Mary (Joseph) Hollingsworth of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Mack James Jr., Harry Lee (Sylvia) James and Cornelius (Sherry) James, all of Darlington; a grandson he reared as his own, Johnny D. (Dorothy) James of Arizona; eight other grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Frances Bradley, Jessie Bacote, Thelma Brown and Annie Mae Brown; nieces and nephews.
VIOLA H. GRAHAM
DARLINGTON – Services for Viola Catherine Harrison Graham of Dovesville were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Dovesville. The Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor, and the Rev. W. L. Thompson officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., of Darlington.
Mrs. Graham died Saturday, Feb. 17, in a Darlington hospital after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Betty Williams Harrison and Jessie Green Sr. She was married
twice, first to the late Henry Sims and later to the late Brooks T. Graham. She was a life member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, serving faithfully on the senior choir, the Sunday School, adviser of the Sunbeam Choir, and past president of the usher board. She was also a member of the Grahams Tent 194 and the Joint Stock Lodge #77.
For a number of years, she was employed at Brunson Laundry Mat of Darlington.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Pandora (Carey) Cox of Society Hill and Ms. Jessie Bradshaw of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Sam (Deloris) Graham and Charles (Ruby) Graham, both of Dovesville; one devoted granddaughter, Ruthpine Graham of Dovesville; one special great-granddaughter, Latosha Douglas Harrell of Society Hill; 23 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Green of Darlington; nieces and nephews.
SADIE D. JAMES
DARLINGTON – Services for Sadie Davis James were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Thomas, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc.
Mrs. James died Monday, Feb. 19, at her residence after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Jerry and Mariah Samuel Davis. She attended Darlington County public schools. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and was employed for a number of years by the Hart, Clanton and Harper families. She was predeceased by a son, Billy Davis, and a grandson, Alphonso Davis.
Survivors include her devoted husband, Hezekiah James of Florence; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mabell Davis of Darlington; four granddaughters, Thelma Lewis, Cora (Thomas) Davis, Rosa (Joe) Richardson, both of Darlington; and Rebecca (Lonnie) Davis of Florence; three grandsons, DeWayne Davis, Willie (Brenda) Davis and Elder Hezekiah (Mary) Davis, all of Darlington; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.
GLADYS H. SEEGARS
McBEE – Services for Mrs. Gladys Horton "Polly" Seegars, 90, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at McBee Baptist Church with the Revs. Homer Hinson, Rick Williams and Carl Watts officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield. Memorials may be made to McBee Baptist Church and McBee Rescue Squad.
Mrs. Seegars died Friday, Feb. 23. Born in Kershaw County, a daughter of the late Lewis A. and Callie Pitts Horton. She was a homemaker and a member of McBee Baptist Church and the WMU. She was married
to the late Jack Seegars and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jennie S. Pate, sons, Rex Seegars and Robert Seegars, grandchildren, Terry Pate and Baby Seegars, and by two sisters.
Survivors are one son, James Wright "Jimmy" Seegars of McBee; two daughters, Joanne S. Cain of Augusta, Ga., and Jackie S. Teal and husband, Allen Teal, of McBee; one brother, Richard Horton of Columbia; five sisters, Ruth Hollifield of Hamlet, N.C., Nettie White of Durham, N.C., Josie Jones of Tucker, Ga., and Patsy Dean and Myrtis Knight, both of Charlotte, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
HATTIE TURNAGE
Graveside services for Hattie Turnage, 95, were held at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheraw, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.
Miss Turnage was born
in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Willie and Hattie McBride Turnage. She was a homemaker and a retired caregiver. Miss Turnage was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Turnage, Nora Teal and Ruth Jernigan, and also by two brothers, Ray and Oscar Turnage.
Survivors include two sisters, Arie Bruner and Ethel Thompson of Cheraw, also nieces and nephews.
ROBERT SMITH
Services for Mr. Robert "Jelly Bean" Smith were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Sansbury Memorial Cemetery in Timmonsville, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Robert was born
in the Timmonsville community of Florence County, a son of the late Robert and Julia Wilson Smith. He was educated in the public schools and a graduate of the Johnson High School with the class of 1969. He worked several jobs in the Timmonsville area before he moved to New York in 1974.
After moving to New York, "Jelly Bean" was employed for several years as a security guard for VGI Security of Bronx, N.Y. Later, he was employed with the U.S. Post Office as a tractor trailer driver. His employment there lasted some 20 years before his retirement in 1996 when he and his family moved back to South Carolina.
Survivors include, a loving wife, Debra Smith of the home; five sons, Timothy Latham, Robert Smith Jr., Derrick Smith and Christopher Smith, all of the home, and Franklin Taylor of Timmonsville; one sister, Mae Pearl (Tom) Byrd of Darlington; one uncle, Ike Taylor; a mother-in-law, Pearlie Latham; a special niece, Elizabeth Smith; and a host of other very close relatives and very dear friends.
ERNEST HALL
Graveside services for Ernest Wilson Hall, 56, were held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Darlington Memory Gardens Cemetery. The Rev. James Beck Jr. officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.
Mr. Hall died Saturday, Feb. 24. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Will and Bertha Gainey Hall. He was a retired carpenter.
Surviving are his daughters, Sheila Shoemake of Hartsville, and Sharon Hall of Patrick; sister, Bernice Engelbert of Hartsville; and four grandchildren.
ARTHUR GUNN
Services for Arthur Emory Gunn, 74, were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Antioch Baptist Church. The Revs. Tom Swilley and Jim Beck officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Gunn died Saturday, Feb. 24. Born in Lanett, Ala., he was a son of the late Alver Turner and Lois Duffee Gunn Sr. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was retired from Santee Print Works in Sumter. He was an avid coin collector and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Watford Gunn of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Randy Parnell and Artis and Mike Bailey, all of Hartsville, and Sherella and Larry Mayfield, Sheila Fordham, Sheryl and Steve Alewine, all of Heflin, Ala.; step-sons and spouses, Steve and Joann Wilkes and Allan and Sharon Wilkes, all of Hartsville, Lewis and Donna Wilkes of North Augusta, and Dennis and Brenda Wilkes of Bethune; brother, Jesse E. Gunn of Walnut Grove, Ga.; sisters, Thelma Gooden of Lafayette, Ala., Irma Black and Mildred Lott, both of West Point, Ga.; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Alver T. Gunn Jr.
ROY STERLING
Graveside services for Jay LeRoy "Roy" Sterling Jr., 80, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Gene Holmes officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.
Mr. Sterling died Saturday, Feb. 24. Born in Bedford, Va., he was a son of the late Jay LeRoy and Daisy Dixon Sterling. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, was retired from Byerly Hospital, and served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. He was a member and past master of Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and a past district deputy grand master.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn King Sterling of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Marvin Rozear of Durham, N.C.; grandchildren, Mark Rozear, Lance Rozear, Jessica Rozear and Sterling Rozear; and great-grandchildren, Amelia Rozear and Garamond Rozear.
VONNIE HATFIELD
DARLINGTON – Mrs. Vonnie Powell Hatfield, 70, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001. Services were held Monday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. in Southside Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hatfield was born
in Florence County, daughter of the late Waiters and Cola Turner Powell. She had retired from the insurance department of Wilson Hospital and was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, James Frank Hatfield of Darlington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Marilyn Hatfield of Columbia, Billy and Beth Hatfield of Florence, and Ernie and Barbara Hatfield also of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Ben (Era) Rushing of Florence and Mrs. John (Etta Mae) Stone of Pamplico; also surviving are six grandchildren, Suzanne Oakley, Melinda Hatfield, Kristin Hatfield, Jay Hatfield, Robert Hatfield and Ashton Hatfield; and one great-grandchild, Drake Deal.
Mrs. Hatfield was predeceased by one sister and three brothers.

Mrs. Josephine Williams died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in a Washington, D.C., hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.

Services for Mrs. Josephine Williams will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2001, at Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church with the Rev. C. L. Bowman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home. Wake services will be held at 7 tonight, Friday, at Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Chester Williams of 2524 Louisville Street, Hartsville.
Mrs. Williams died Monday, Feb. 26, in a Washington, D.C., hospital after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Edward and Minnie Bell Mack. She was educated in the public schools and was married
early in life to the late Rohstell Williams. This marriage was blessed with seven children, four of whom survive her. She was a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church and the Order of Easter Star No. 238, Mt. Beulah Chapter.
Surviving are two daughters, Pearl (David) Jackson of S. Ozone Park, N.Y., and Peggy (James) Jackson of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Chester (Katie) Williams of Hartsville and Herbert L. Williams of Washington, D.C.; a son-in-law, Moudiemon Phillips of Bethune; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Mary (James) Hough and Bernice Williams; four brothers-in-law, Eddie (Maggie) Williams, Henry (Charlene) Williams, Lewis Williams and James Williams.
