BOB NIELSEN
Services for the Rev. Charles Robert "Bob" Nielsen, 74, were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Ted Duvall and the Rt. Rev. Edward L. Salmon Jr., Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina, officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The Rev. Nielsen died Friday, March 2. Born in Ridgewood, N.J., he was a son of the late William Christian and Eleanor Waldren Nielsen. He was educated at Kent School, Kent, Conn., and was a graduate of Princeton University and Virginia Technological Semi-nary. He also received a master's degree in English and education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
He served as parish priest in Stamford, Conn., and Cockeys-ville, Md., and then was for many years associated with Episcopal schools in Lake Forest, Ill., Lafayette, La., and Jacksonville, Fla. He retired to Hartsville and soon became Headmaster of All Saint's Episcopal School in Florence and was the founder of Trinity Collegiate School in the Pee Dee area. He also served as Supply Rector at several Episcopal churches in the area.
He was associated with civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, Hartsville Interfaith Ministries and Community in Schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Rogers Nielsen of Hartsville, sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Hamilton Nielsen of Portland, Maine, Charles Robert and Kumiko Nielsen Jr., of Palo Alto, Calif., John Williams and Trish Nielsen of Clinton, N.C.; brother, Don Nielsen of New Canaan, Conn., sister, Joan Gray of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; grandchildren, Jenna Nielsen and Dain Nielsen. He was predeceased by a brother, Bill Nielsen.
HERBERT COKER
DARLINGTON – Services for Herbert Coker, 82, were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens with military honors.
Mr. Coker died Friday, March 2, in a Hartsville nursing home. He was born
in Williamsburg County, a son of the late John N. and Missouri Lee Coker. He served his country in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne in the Atlantic Theater during World War II. He had retired as manager of the treating department at Dixie Cup. Mr. Coker was a member of the DAV and VFW.
Surviving are one son, Danny (Peggy) Coker of Fontana, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Ellen) McNelly of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Mrs. Hal (Trudie C.) Goodson of Lexington, N.C., Spencer (Chrissy) Coker of Darlington and Rhett (Tonya) Gregory of Florence; two great-grandchildren, Hayes and Cole Goodson; also, one sister, Mrs. Marvin (Mildred) Bradshaw of Darlington.
CLARA FAYE MUNN
DARLINGTON – Services for Clara Faye Weatherford Munn, 66, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Munn was born
in Florence County, daughter of the late Melvin C. and Clara Moore Weatherford. She retired from Asea Brown Boveri of Florence and was a member of Northgate Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Marion Ludy Munn of Darlington; two sons, Marion Ludy Munn Jr. of Hartsville and Melvin W. Munn of Camden; two daughters, Clara Hall- man of Hartsville and Nancy Lee of Florence; five grand- children and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Ray Weatherford of Lugoff; and one sister, Mae Brown of Florence.
RALPH L. OUTLAW
McBEE – Services for Ralph Leo Outlaw, 71, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Gum Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Gardner and Todd Robinson officiating. Burial was in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Bishopville directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Chesterfield County.
Mr. Outlaw was born
in Lee County, a son of the late Frank and Lula Rogers Outlaw. He was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and was a Gideon.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Beasley Outlaw of McBee; one son, Ralph Mitchell (Beverly) Outlaw of Bishopville; one daughter, Barbara (J.C.) Hancock of Bishopville; two step-sons, Joe Carroll (Ann) Morrison of Rock Hill and John Michael (Jean) Morrison Sr. of Florence; two step-daughters, Judy (Robert H. Jr.) McKinnon and Debbie Sue (Charles) Davis, both of Bethune; two grandsons, Evan Hancock and Brandon Outlaw; six step-grandchildren, Brian McKinnon, Amber Smith, John Morrison Jr., Kelsey Morrison, Zackery Morrison, Jessica Arnold; a sister, Ruth (Elvin) Hopkins of Bishopville.
WILLIAM A. CLEMENGER
Memorial services for William Alan Clemenger, 53, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. J. L. Dutton officiated. Mr. Clemenger died Friday, March 2. He was born
in Niagara Falls, N.Y., a son of Mrs. Ruth Madera Clemenger and the late William Albert Clemenger. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Drucilla Parker Clemenger of Hartsville; his mother of Hartsville; four step-daughters, Debbie Dutton of Beaufort, Phyllis Dutton and Janice Ray both of Augusta, Ga., and Vickie Hutchinson of Florence; and eight step-grandchildren.
ERNEST VENSON SR.
Services for Ernest Lee Venson Sr., 52, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 7, 2001, in Green Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
He was born
in Darlington County, a son of Leroy and Anna Margaret Mumford Venson. He was a member of Green Hill Baptist Church, attended Hartsville Bible Baptist Church and Butler High School.
Surviving other than his father of Baltimore, Md., and mother of Hartsville are his wife, Nancy Smith Venson of Hartsville; four daughters, Margaret (Cee) Hawkins, Selena Venson (Kennard) McDonald, Jennie Venson and Sally Venson, all of Hartsville; five sons, Conway (Darlene) Smith of Richmond, Va., Ernest Lee Venson Jr., Reginold (Shameka) Venson, Delonta Isaac and Terrick Hunter, all of Hartsville; a sister, Lillie Bee of Ansonia, Conn.; a special uncle and aunt, Wesley and Inez Mack of Hartsville; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
HAROLD SANDERS SR.
Services for Harold Alton Sanders Sr., 75, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the First Church of The Nazarene with the Revs. Darryl Bogatay and Lloyd Brock officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, from 6-8 at the funeral home.
Mr. Sanders was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Ebbie Judson and Dovie Cassidy Sanders. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 31 years of service, a member of the Old Timers Club, DAV and was a veteran of WWII.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mildred Johnson Sanders of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Shelia and Johnny Tolson of Hartsville; two sisters, Earline Howle of Hartsville and Betty Whitley of Lancaster; daughter-in-law, Juana Sanders of Plama, Spain; three grandchildren, Celeste Sanders, Harold Alton Sanders III, both of Plama, Spain, and Angie (Shane) Tolson Nesbitt of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by a son, Harold Alton Sanders Jr.
ALMA M. McELVEEN
DARLINGTON – Services for Alma Matthews McElveen, 63, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 9, 2001, at Vision Assembly Church. Interment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Belk Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Vision Assembly McElveen Project, 749 Wire Rd., Darlington, S.C. 29532.
Ms. McElveen died Tuesday, March 6, in a Hartsville nursing home after an illness. She was a former employee of Chase Oil Company, was born
in Florence County and was the daughter of the late Edward "Ed" and Melinda Carraway Matthews. She was a member of Vision Assembly Church, where she was on the World Evangelization Commit-tee and was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Allen (Barbara) Lynch of Darlington; two special nieces, Betty (David) Tarte of Effingham and Judy (Jimmy) Griffin of Florence; two special nephews, Junior (Francine) Lawhon of Florence and Billy Ray (Fran) Lawhon of Floydale; and two dear friends, Inez Wade of Mableton, Ga., and Jean Jarrell of Florence.
Ms. McElveen was preceded in death by two sons, Dwight Edward McElveen and Ronald Dwayne McElveen; two sisters, Barzella Lawhon and Betty Gray; and a brother, Pressley Matthews.
MARY L. STUCKEY
BISHOPVILLE – Services for Mary Lucia Stuckey, 90, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Hepzibah Presbyterian Church near Manville. Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Revs. Tom Kellan and Edwell Black officiating. Visitation will be Saturday 10-11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Miss Stuckey died March 6 in Powder Springs, Ga. She was born
in Lee County on July 13, 1910, a daughter of the late James H. (Jay) and Clara Glenn Gibson Stuckey. She was a graduate of Bishopville High School, attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill and George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
She was employed in clerical, secretarial and accounting work over most of her working life. She began as a legal secretary in Bishopville and then worked in various United States government positions including the Department of Agriculture, Selective Service, the State Department, and the Atomic Energy Commission. During WW II, she served in the Women's Army Corps with Headquarters Air Transport Command at the National Airport.
Upon returning to Bishop-ville in 1952, she opened a lettershop service which she operated until her retirement. She was revered as an accomplished genealogist and historian who gave generously of her time and research.
She was a member of Hepzibah Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Sumter Chapter Genealogical Society and an associate member of the Old Darlington District Genealogical Society.
Survivors include two nieces and three nephews who live in South Carolina and Georgia and a number of great and great-grand nieces and nephews.
WALTER B. GAINEY
Services for Walter B. (Bobby) Gainey, 55, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 9, 2001, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Jackson officiating. Burial will be in the Chatham Hill Memorial Cemetery in Cheraw.
Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, March 6. He was born
in Chesterfield County, a son of Otis B. Gainey and the late Mittie Purvis Gainey. He attended schools in Chesterfield and Marlboro counties. He was in the U.S. Army and the National Guard Reserves, Company A, 11th Battalion Third Brigade. He was owner and operator of Gainey's Grocery.
Surviving are his wife, Aline (Sissie) Moree Gainey of Hartsville; his father of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Denise and Pressley Norris and Melinda Watson, all of Darlington; son, Toby Grooms of Hartsville; two brothers, the Rev. Larry R. Gainey of Wallace and Otis Gainey Jr. of Chesterfield; two sisters, Patsy White of Patrick and Anita Hicks of Hartsville; and four grandchildren, Gadge and Brad Norris, Trey Watson and Evan Grooms.
