OSCAR LEE. McLEOD
Oscar Lee McLeod died on Tuesday, Mary 6, 2001, at his residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.

EDITH E. HOFFMAN
Graveside services for Edith Elizabeth Hoffman, 72, were held Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mrs. Hoffman died Tuesday, June 12. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late William Verine Hoffman and Dianne Inez Kelly Dixon. She was a homemaker and caregiver. Mrs. Hoffman was preceded in death by a daughter, Henrietta Hoffman and a brother, Herbert Eugene Hoffman.

Survivors include five sons, Clyde F. Watford and wife, Brenda, of McBee, Harold T. Watford and wife, Rachel, Burke Hoffman and wife, Wendy, and Benny Hoffman and wife, Merna, all of Hartsville and Walter Ronnie Hoffman of the home; four daughters, Dianne Watford Easterling of Florence, Deena Watford Wilkes and husband, Gene, of McBee, Sherry Hoffman Gratzer and husband, Steve, of Summerville, and Janice Hoffman Jackson of Moultrie, Ga.; one brother, G. W. Smothers and wife, Jerdgie Mae of Hartsville; close friends, Mildred Campbell and Shirley Jackson of Hartsville; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

JACKLYN BESANCENEY
Graveside services for Jacklyn Besanceney, 73, will be held at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Mansfield, Pa., on July 2, 2001. Norton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Ms. Besanceney died June 9. She was born in Berwick, Pa., the daughter of the late Clifton Earl and Edith May Hill Dawson. She taught school for a number of years in the Spencer Van Etten and Elmira Heights School Districts. She was a member of Alba Church of Christ, and New York State Retired Teachers Association. She was a graduate of Elmira College. Ms. Besanceney and her husband were foster parents for many years.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Brig Varnadoe from Hartsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles C. "Chuck" and Julie Besanceney, from Mansfield, Pa.; and one grandson, Codie Besanceney.

JOHN A. McMILLAN SR.
JEFFERSON -Graveside services for John A. McMillan Sr., 88, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Jefferson United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Sutton Funeral Home of Pageland. Visitation will be at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 8:30.

Mr. McMillan died Thursday, June 14, in Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Monroe. He was the son of the late Thomas H. and Gladys Crouch McMillan. He was a farmer, owner of McMillan Peach Orchards, a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church, former manager of the Jefferson Cotton Gin and a former accountant for the Bank of Jefferson.

Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth M. McMillan of the home; two sons, John A. McMillan Jr. and Derryl C. McMillan, both of Jefferson; a brother, Thomas H. McMillan of Columbia; three sisters, Anna L. Evans of Camden, Nell Hendrix of Columbia and Bess Raley of Tallahasee, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Richard McMillan, Bill McMillan, Lori Middleton and Keith McMillan.

Mr. McMillan was predeceased by a brother, Mike McMillan, and three sisters, Sue Haigler, Eola Leaird and Charlotte McLeod.

JAMES EDGAR HILL JR.
DARLINGTON -Memorial services for James Edgar Hill Jr., 83, will be held at 2 pm. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Trinity United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Timothy J. Rogers.

Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Hill died Wednesday in a local hospital after an illness. He was born in Caroleen, N.C. He was the son of the late James E. and Emma Hill. He was retired from Burlington Industries where he served many years as a mechanical engineer. He was an active member of Trinity Unity Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class and the Kitchen Committee. Mr. Hill was a mason and a member of St. David's Lodge #72.

Mr. Hill was married to Mrs. Lois Bradley Hill who died in 1968. He later married Mrs. Corrie Hill who died in 1995.

Survivors include one son, James E. (Phyllis) Hill III of Columbia; one step-son, Bobby (Brenda) Byrd of Darlington; one step-daughter, Faye (Gene) Belton of Orangeburg; two sisters, Sue Plemmons of Gaffney, Monnie Causby of Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church (Kitchen Fund), P.O. Box 16, Darlington, S.C.29532.

MACK PETERSON
Services for Mack Peterson Jr., 58, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Peterson died Saturday, June 9, at his residence after an apparent heart attack. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Mary White Peterson and the late Mack Peterson Sr. He received his education at Spaulding High School and attended The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc.

Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are his wife, Luella Green Peterson of Hartsville; two daughters, Lauretha (Mario) Wilkes of Florence and Blanche Bernell (Sammy) Jones of Sumter; two sons, Maxie Leroy (Pearlie) Peterson of Hartsville and Charles Alexander (Tabitha) Peterson of Decatur, Ga.; a sister, Mary (Vichaux Cater) McKay of Hartsville; a brother, Robert (Sheila) Peterson of Yonkers, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; three aunts; several nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

JAMES SUTTON
Services for James Sutton, 62, were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2001, in Centerville A.M.E. Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Sutton died Thursday, June 7, in Newark, N.J., after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Leroy and Bannie Lee Washington Sutton. He received his education in Fayetteville, N.C., and Newark, N.J., schools and was an Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Dianne Johnson Sutton of Hillside, N.J.; a daughter, Tracy Lloyd of Newark, N.J.; two sons, Derrick and David Brown Sutton, both of Newark, N.J.; two brothers, David (Joan) Sutton and Leroy Sutton, both of Newark, N.J.; an aunt, Dorothy Sutton Bishop of Hartsville; an uncle, James H. Sutton of Hartsville and four grandchildren.

EDITH H. ELLIS
DARLINGTON – Graveside services for Edith Humphries Ellis, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 22, 2001, in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ellis died Wednesday, June 20. She was born in Florence County, daughter of the late Duncan and Meddie Humphries. She retired after 32 years from Dixie Cup and was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Joe Ellis of Darlington, and two nephews, John Presley (Carolyn) Stewart and Mike Stewart, both of Hartsville.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, 950 West Faris Rd., Greenville, S.C. 29605.

ALPHONSO ELLIS
Services for Alphonso Ellis, 62, formerly of Hartsville, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Ellis died Tuesday, June 18. He was born in Darlington, a son of the late Willie and Rosa Bradford Ellis. He received his education in Darlington County public schools and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. After moving to New York, he attended Refuge Temple in Manhattan, N.Y.

Mr. Ellis was a hard worker who had been a faithful employee at Allied Services as a building maintenance worker for 42 years. He retired this year on April 1.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen Ellis of Jamica, N.Y., and Jennifer Ellis of Hartsville; six sisters, Delphine (Earl) Whittaker of Neptune, N.J., Marva Foster of Bronx, N.Y., Dorothy (Irving) Caldwell of Columbus, Ga., Roseanne (Herman) Chandler and Ruth Segars, both of Hartsville, and Betty Parker of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, Henry (Josey) Ellis of Hartsville and George (Shirley) Ellis of Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Ruth Segars, 402 Burma Street, Hartsville.

HOMER MCDANIEL
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Services for Homer C. "Mac" McDaniel, 76, will be held today, June 22, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church of Charlotte with the Rev. Dr. Ivan H. M. Pedan officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens directed by McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel. Parking for the First United Methodist Church is available in the Odell Building parking garage from the 9th Street entrance.

Mr. McDaniel was born on Jan. 25, 1925, the son of the late E. B. and Ora McDaniel. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a Stephen lay minister. He graduated from Mt. Ulla High School in 1944 and was a floor covering contractor. Mr. McDaniel was past master of the St. Andrews Lodge, member of the Scottish Rite bodies, member of the Oasis Shrine Temple, past president of Mecklenburg Shrine Club and honorary member of Hejas Temple, Greenville, S.C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva McDaniel, on June 8, 1999.

He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Cothran and husband, Frank, of Charlotte, N.C., and Nancy Payne and husband, Johnny, of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Blake Cothran, Parks Payne and Ashley Clark; and one great-grandson, Jake Clark.

The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
