KENNETH REED
DARLINGTON – Memorial services for Kenneth Mitchell Reed, 50, will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 27, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Reed died Monday, June 26, in a Darlington hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Raleigh Reed and the late Ruby Norton Reed Brown. He was an employee of Clanton's for many yeas. Mr. Reed was a truck driver and enjoyed traveling.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lee (Heidi) Carter of Hartsville and Kellie Schaffner of Rock Hill; three grandchildren, Ladson Carter, Mark and Ryan Schaffner; and one brother, Donald 'Sonny' Reed of Darlington.
Mr. Reed was preceded in death by a brother, Winston Reed, and sisters, Jackie Gates, Gerry Miller and Pat Reed.
FRANCES E. GRIGGS
Services for Frances Elizabeth Cagle Griggs, 65, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in the House of Prayer Holiness Church in Hartsville. Burial followed in the Black Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Griggs died Sunday, June 24, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County on May 3, 1936, a daughter of the late Wesley and Ethel Gainey Cagle. She was a member of the House of Prayer Holiness Church and was the widow of the late W.S. Griggs, who died in 1988.
Surviving are five sons, Calvin (Annette) Cagle, Wesley (Janice) Griggs, Clarence (Marie) Griggs and William (Renee) Griggs, all of Hartsville, Gerald (Tammy) Griggs of Darlington; two daughters, Diane (Bobby) Bell of Hartsville and Vera McInville of Darlington; four brothers, Steve (Ann) Cagle, William (Joyce) Cagle and James (Dot) Cagle, all of Hartsville, and Larry (Hazel) Cagle of Patrick; two sisters, Beatrice (Frank) Bell and Bertha Gainey, both of Hartsville; a special friend, Donna Atkinson of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren, Tony (Kerry) Bell, Amy (Danny) Brueino, Stacey Humphries, Lee Cagle, Danielle McInville, Nicholas Griggs, Douglas Griggs, Chris Griggs, Casey Griggs, Matt Griggs, Chinia Griggs, Josh Griggs; two great-grandchildren, T. J. Bell and Ashley Humphries.
Memorials may be made to the House of Prayer Holiness Church in Hartsville.
JOHN OWENS
DARLINGTON – Services for John 'Jack' Owens were held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2001, in Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. J. B. Booth Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Round O Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Owens died Thursday, June 21, in a Darlington nursing home after an illness. He was born
in Monks Corner, Berkley County, a son of the late Lillian Owens. He was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Owens was united in marriage to the late Aline Brown Owens for 51 years before her death. He was a retired construction worker with R. E. Goodson Construction. Survivors include one adopted daughter, Mrs. Jessie Pierce of Darlington; a sister, Mrs. Lucille Gilliard of Charleston; six children he reared as his own, Mrs. Carnell (Joseph Jr.) Curtis, the Rev. Coleman (Patricia) Cannon, Mrs. Allean (Heyward) Little, Mrs. Mary (Eddie) Dargan, all of Darlington, Archie Samuel of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Helen (Warfield) Kendall of Dale City, Va.; 10 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carnell & Joseph Curtis Jr. of 1520 Windsor Drive, Darlington.
PATRICIA WHITE
DARLINGTON – Services for Patricia 'Tricia' Walker White, 49, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Mt. Rona Baptist Church in Society Hill. The Rev. B. L. Lattaker officiated. The Rev. Matthew Robinson is pastor. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc. Mrs. White died on Thursday, June 21, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was the third child of seven children born
to Carrie Brock Walker and the late Harold Walker Sr. She graduated from Rosenwald High School, class of 1970. A life member of Red Hill Baptist Church serving in many capacities until her health declined, Mrs. White spent most of her life in Darlington County and was gainfully employed at Hartsville Manufacturing for a number of years.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis White of the home; her devoted mother, Mrs. Carrie Walker Brown of Society Hill; step-father, General Robinson of Darlington; four sons, Montana (Cynthia) Walker, Gary Walker, Craig Walker, all of Darlington, and Ricardo Walker of Hickory, N.C.; four sisters; Ms. Viola Walker of Philadelphia, Pa., Ms. Catherine Arvinger, Mrs. Geraldine (Donald) Bacote, both of Darlington, and Mrs. Evelyn (Raney) Gee of Society Hill; two brothers, Harold Walker of Society Hill and Illinois Brown of Darlington; 12 grandchildren; two uncles, David Brock of Society Hill and Jesse (Rose) Brock of Connecticut.; four aunts, Lucille (Monroe) Antrum of Georgia, Vicky Brock of Florence, Carrie Brock and Sally Brock, both of Darlington; a host of nieces and nephews; devoted classmates and friends.

Mr. Thomas died Monday, June 25, in a local hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, the son of the late General Shafter and Lila Mae Register Thomas. He was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mr. Thomas was employed with Security Forces, Inc. as a security officer. Survivors include his wife, Betty Brewer Thomas of the home; two sons, Michael (Amy) Thomas and Gabriel Allan Thomas, both of Darlington; one daughter, Carla Thomas (Ronnie) Anderson of Darlington; five brothers, General Shafter Thomas Jr., of Darlington, W.S. 'Buck' Thomas of Darlington, Larry Thomas of Austin, Texas, Charles Thomas of Monks Corner, Dillon Thomas of Columbus Ga.; three sisters, Peggy Thomas Collins of Effingham, Merzele Thomas Kirven and Betty Thomas Stevens, both of Darlington; four grandchildren, Michael Thomas Jr., Hunter Thomas, Chelsi Anderson and Brittni Anderson, all of Darlington. BURRELL J. PEOPLES
McBEE – Services for Burrell J. Peoples, 55, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001, in Galilee Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Pines Forest Memorial Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Peoples died Sunday after an apparent heart attack. He was born
in Chesterfield County, a son of Easphert Peoples. He was a graduate of Pines Forest High School, class of 1963, and attended Galilee Baptist Church and was an Army veteran.
Surviving, other than his mother of McBee, are his wife, Creola Outen Peoples of McBee; three daughters, Annette Pousa, Tereasa Pousa and LaToya Pousa, all of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Chad Peoples and Craig Peoples, both of Charlotte, N.C.; four step-children, Michelle Franklin, Timothy Franklin, Thomas L. Franklin and Jonjulo Franklin, all of Charlotte; a step-granddaughter, Larkia Franklin of Charlotte; two sisters, Frances Simmons and William Alston, both of Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, Henry Peoples, James Lewis Peoples and Steven Dennis Peoples, all of McBee.

Services for Frank Arthur Johnson will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 8, 2001, in Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson died Sunday, June 3, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Horace Williams and Violet Johnson Bulls. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and worked with Glidden Painting Co. as a painter for the past three years.
Survivors are three daughters, Jennifer Johnson of Hartsville, Shante' Kirkpatrick of Charlotte, N.C., and Trena Jacobs of the Oates community; four sisters, Deloris Johnson-Shaw, Violet M. Johnson, Lila Johnson and Charlena (Vern) Johnson, all of Hartsville; three brothers, Harvey Johnson of Darlington, Howard Johnson of Hartsville and Jessie (Shirley) Johnson of Florence; five grandchildren; and two aunts, Julia Bulls of Charlotte, N.C., and Louise Isaac of Darlington.

Bryson Wright, 19, of McBee, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Funeral services for Charles Kenneth Jones Jr., 58, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Chapel of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Jones died Thursday, June 7, 2001. Born in Hartford, Conn., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kenneth Jones.
Surviving are his son, Dale Eby of Collettsville, N.C.; daughter, Michelle Scott of Dallas, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

DILLON - Services for Leon Sweatt, 84, will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 8, 2001, in Full Gospel Holiness Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery directed by Cooper Funeral Home.
Mr. Sweatt died Wednesday, June 6, at his residence. Born in Marion County on Nov. 23, 1916, he was the son of the late Lonnie Sweatt and Carrie Dorman Sweatt. He was a member of Eastside Holiness Church.
Survivors include his nieces, Jeannie Evans of Hartsville, Deborah Kelly of Dry Fork, Va., Gail Springs of Florence, and Toni Hellwig of Centerville, Ga.; nephews, Lonnie T. Evans of Dillon, and Paul Evans of Gastonia, N.C.
