ALLAN L. HOPKINS
LAMAR – Services for Allan Lane "Peter" Hopkins, 42, were held Thursday, March 29, 2001 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. The Revs. Bill Daniels and John Spires officiated with burial in the Bethany Cemetery.
Mr. Hopkins died Tuesday, March 27. He was born
in Lee County a son of the late Roland and Lucille Huggins Hopkins.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Parnell Hopkins of Lamar; two daughters, Grace and Sylvia Hopkins, both of Lamar; four brothers, Roland Hopkins Jr. of Bishopville, Charlie Hopkins of Ohio, Larry Hopkins of Mich, and Kenneth Hopkins of Hartsville; two sisters, Cynthia Hinson of Michigan, and Maxine Watts of Bishopville.
SHIRLEY JACOBS
Services for Shirley McQueen Jacobs, 66, will be held at 4 p.m. today, March 30, 2001, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carroll Pope will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Box 56, Lydia, S. C. 29079 or the Florence Humane Society, 1007 Stockade Dr., Florence, S.C. 29506. The family will receive friends at the residence after the services.
Mrs. Jacobs died Wednesday, March 28. Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Helen Bristow McQueen. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, studied dance in New York City and was owner and operator of School of Dance Arts. She was involved with the Florence Little Theater, Hartsville Community Players and the Civic Ballet Company of Florence.
Surviving are her husband, Willard L. Jacobs of Lydia and sister, Mary McQueen Miller of Florence.
ROSE B. WHITE
Mass of Christian burial for Rose B. White, 74, will be held at 11 a.m. today, March 30, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father Karl Roesch, Celebrant. Final commendation and farewell prayers will be in Swift Creek Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. White died Wednesday, March 28. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Gennaro and Adeline Rispoli Bertone. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and «retired from Hartsville Manufacturing Company.
Surviving are her husband, Guy A. White Sr. of Hartsville; son, Guy A. White Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and sons-in-law, Adele White, Theresa (Earl) Watford, Kathy (Buddy) Chapman, Angela Bonds, all of Hartsville; brother, John C. Bertone of Long Island, N.Y.; sister, Anna Fisher of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Christopher Partridge and a sister, Grace Kelley.
J. EDWARD LYLES
Services for James Edward Lyles, 78, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2001, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. L. Z. Freeman officiated with burial in Swift Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Lyles died Thursday, March 22. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Maxie and Ada Hall Lyles. He was retired from Apac Paving.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian Lyles of Hartsville; son, James "Buddy" Lyles of Hartsville; daughters, Deborah Joyce Tarte and Sandra E. Wilson, both of Hartsville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
ROBERT MACK
DARLINGTON – Services for Robert B. Mack, 44, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Lawson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilbet White, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Mack died Sunday, March 18, at the home of his parents after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of Cleveland and Janie Mae Simon Mack Sr.
He received his education in Darlington County public schools, graduating from Mayo High School class of 1974. At an early age, he attended and joined Lawson Grove Baptist Church where he served faithfully on the Mass Choir.
He was a loan officer for First Future State Mortgage in Darlington. He started a singing group with his sisters, "The Spiritualettes" in which he was a lead singer.
Survivors include his parents, Deacon Cleveland and Janie Mack Sr. of Darlington; three brothers, Cleveland (Betty) Mack Jr., James (Cassandra) Mack Sr. and Alvin Mack, all of Darlington; four sisters, Betty (Leroy) Jackson, CleEster (Henry) Wilson and Yvonne (Christopher) Colclough, all of Darlington and Vernette (Ralph) Dees of Columbia; an adopted brother, Andrew Sansvury of Columbia; aunts; uncles; nieces and cousins.
OTIS LEE BEST
LAMAR – Services for Otis Lee Best (aka) Bess, will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 4, 2001, at Savannah Grove AME Church with the Rev. J. E. Dukes, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plaza Memorial Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mr. Best died Saturday, March 30, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of Haskel Bess Sr. and the late Eula Mae Samuel Bess. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and moved to New York as a young man where he lived and worked for 30 years before he returned to his native Lamar some 10 years ago.
Survivors are his father, Haskel Bess Sr. of Lamar; two sons, Otis Jones of New York and Barry White of Windsor, N.C.; two daughters, Lacresha Jones of New York, N.Y., and Alice Mae Ledbetter of Darlington; one granddaughter, Jamaria Stevenson of Darlington; five sisters, Margaret (Henry) Williams, Mary (Leroy) Goodson and Eliza Jane (Robert) McClain, all of Lamar, Judy Ann (Chris) Coleman and Deloris (Dewayne) Dials, both of Darlington; four brothers, Haskel (Deloris) Bess Jr. and Donnie Bess, both of Lamar, Robert Lee (Sandra) Bess and Larry (Gwendolyn) Bess, both of Darlington.
MURRAY McCALL
Services for Murray McCall, 90, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Southside Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. McCall died Friday, March 30, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born
in Lee County, a son of the late Sara Hart. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church, Senior Choir and chairman of Deacon Board for 45 years.
Surviving are five daughters, Sara Lee McCall Coe (Willie), Rosa Mae McCall Kennedy, Dorothy Mae McCall Jackson (Henry), Shirley McCall and Jannie Lee McCall Parker (Issac) all of Hartsville; five sons, James McCall (Dorothy), Jessie McCall (Patricia), Leroy McCall (Audrey), Davide McCall (Terry) and Monroe Benjamin, all of Hartsville; 54 grandchildren, 121 great-grandchildren and 116 great-great-grandchildren.
MYRTLE M. MOORE
DARLINGTON – Services for Myrtle McDonald Moore, 92, where held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 216 S. Main Street, Darlington, S.C. 29532.
Mrs. Moore died Thursday, March 28, in a local nursing home after an illness. Born in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of the late John Martin and Effie Mae Mangum McDonald. Mrs. Moore was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1925 and the TEL Sunday School class. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in the operation of Moore's Airport in Darlington. She enjoyed music and was a member of the Senior Good Time Band, Saints Alive and the Bell Tones. Mrs. Moore was crowned the first "Miss Darlington" in 1925. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie L. Moore, in 1988; a son, George Washington "Red" Moore in 1990; and two brothers, Coit McDonald and C. P. McDonald.
Survivors include a daughter, Ila Mae Gray of Natalbany, La.; a brother, Calvin McDonald of Millville, Calif.; two sisters, Mable Brewer of Florence and Myrtis Odom of Darlington; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
WILLIE B. HAYNES
Graveside services for Willie Boyd Haynes, 83, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Dendy will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 at the residence, 115 Kenwood Dr. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29506.
Mr. Haynes, widower of Victoria Allen Haynes, died Monday, April 2. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Boyd Allen and Bessie Brown Haynes. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, and a retiree of Sonoco Products Company.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, William A. and Pam Haynes of Hartsville; sister, Kathleen Stokes of Hartsville; and a granddaughter, Chell Haynes, also of Hartsville.
REBECCA M. PIPER
Services for Rebecca M. Piper will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. J. David Myers will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Piper died Monday, April 2. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Theron and Maggie Kelley Marshall. She was a resident of Shoreham, Vt., and Middlebury, Vt., for 50 years and moved back to Hartsville in 1992. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church, Union United Methodist Women and the Union Senior Citizens. She retired after 20 years of service from Van Raalte Manufacturing Company.
Surviving are her husband, Basil Piper of Hartsville; son, Roy Lapell of East Middlebury, Vt.; daughter, Diane Wojewodzic of Middlebury, Vt.; brother, Bobby Marshall of Hartsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Gwen (Robert) B. Atkinson of Hartsville, Rachell Marshall of McBee, Virginia (Joe) Fournier of Columbia; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Needham Marshall Sr. and sisters, Corine M. Lewis and Zella M. Blackwell.
