BESSIE RAY KING
Services for Bessie Ray Usher King, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Brown-Penningtron-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Helms and Roger Hurd officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mrs. King, widow of Howard "Puny" King, died Friday, March 30. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Franklin Benjamin and Bessie Norwood Usher. She was a member of the First Church of God of Reformation and the Women of the Church of God.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Howard Ray (Barbara) King of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay (Fred) Dixon Jr. of Gainesville, Ga., Lou Doris Flowers and Betty Ann (Allen) Tyner, all of Hartsville; sister, Molly Fleming of Darlington; eight grandchildren, Sharon Cannon, Darlene Tyner, Fred Dixon III, Julie Atkinson, Bryan Ray King, Stephen M. King, Tina M. Shoemake, April Tyner; great-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, David Brian Atkinson Jr., Fred Z. Dixon IV, Chris Cannon, Blane Dixon, Jeremy Dixon and Stephanie Cannon.
FRANKLIN STRICKLAND
Graveside services for Franklin Strickland Jr. 37, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Mt. Elon United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Marco Kelly officiated, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Strickland died Wednesday, March 28. Born in Columbia, he was a son of Jessie Elizabeth Powe Strickland and the late Franklin Strickland, Sr.
Surviving are his mother of Decatur, Tenn., sister, Gail Montgomery of Dayton, Tenn.; aunts, Ethleen "Dune" Wolfe of Morganton, W. Va., Lois Crowley of Hartsville; great aunts, Marjorie Caulk and Ester Griggs, both of Hartsville; and special friend, Janet Banning of Newport, N.C.
RICKY DIXON
PATRICK – Services for Ricky Dixon, 38, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2001, at Middendorf Church of God with interment in the church cemetery directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.
Mr. Dixon died Friday, April 13. He was born
in Chesterfield, a son of Ray Dixon and the late Mildred Purvis Dixon. He was a former textile employee and carpenter.
Survivors are his father and step-mother, Ray and Deborah Dixon of Patrick; two brothers, David Dixon and James Dixon, both of Patrick; three sisters, Louise Moore, Lisa Dianne Farmer and Mary Dixon, all of Patrick; three step-brothers, Albert Wood of Cheraw, Jeffrey Butler and Alex Wood, both of Patrick; one step-sister, Dale Wood of Cheraw and a number of nieces and nephews.
JAYE C . WOODS
LAMAR – Services for Jaye Charles Woods, 69, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2001, in the Lamar Chapel of Belk Funeral Home. A private interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C., at a later date.
Mr. Woods was born
in Lamar on May 5, 1931, a son of the late J. G. Woods and Bessie Jowers Woods. He was a graduate of Lamar High School and a U.S. Navy veteran having served during the Korean Conflict on the USS Boxer. He was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church.
He is survived by a son, Jim (Wendy) Woods of Florence; a daughter, Scarlett (Charles) Gee of Lamar; a brother and sister-in-law, Drane and Mattie Ann Woods of Lamar; grandchildren, Sarah Hannah Gee and Jaye Woods and two nieces, Jane (Durby) Amerson of Lamar and June (John) Capotosti of Sardis.

JACK McDONALD
Memorial services for John Angus "Jack" McDonald, Jr., 62, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Holmes officiating. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Mr. McDonald was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late John Angus and Jacqueline Hilton McDonald Sr. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was an avid outdoorsman.
Surviving are his brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Hilton and Crystal McDonald, Michael Ladd and Brenda McDonald, all of Hartsville.
THESSALONIAN BRISTO
Services for Thessalonian Bristo were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, in New Hope United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Bristo died the first week of April. He was born
in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Boisey and Ruth Harris Bristo. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, attended the public schools and graduated from Butler High School and attended Morris College. He served in the U.S. Army and received the Victory Medal and an Occupation Medal because of outstanding service. Thessalonian, affectionately called "Buster, " was an asset to this community because he served as a mentor to the youths in the area. He coached the neighborhood baseball team for many years and was considered a great coach. He was loved and respected because he knew how to treat others. He also served as the neighborhood driving instructor and many young people attributed their knowledge of driving to him.
Surviving are his wife, Alberta Hall Bristo of McBee; a daughter, Vera Ruth; a son, Melvin (Elizabeth) Murphy; four sisters, Mary Pate, Lou Doris Jackson, Pinkie (Robert) Lighty and Vivian Moore, all of Hartsville; a brother, Boisey James Bristo of Hartsville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

DARLINGTON – Graveside services for Baby Keshawn Jerod Mills were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2001, in Lawson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Wilbert White officiated. Burial followed directed by Mitchell Josey Funeral Home.
Baby Boy Mills, seven days old, died Friday, April 13, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born
in Florence County, a son of Hythen Garner and Michael Mills.
Survivors include his parents of Darlington; sister, Keyonna Mills of Darlington; maternal grandparents, Harold and Loretta Garner Jr.; paternal grandparents, Patricia and David Mills Sr.; great-grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Harold Garner Sr., Mrs. Lillie Mae Smith and Mrs. Rosena Samuel, all of Darlington, and Walter Wingate of Timmonsville.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Mrs. Marjorie Wallace Britt, formerly of Darlington, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Philadelphia after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.

DARLINGTON – Oscar McDowell died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
JOSEPH SHERMAN
Services for Joseph Sherman will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 18, 2001, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will take place in the church cemetery with professional services entrusted to Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Sherman was born
in the Mullins community of Marion County, a son of the late Isaac Sherman and Mary E. Sherman Bethea and was educated in the public schools of Marion County. After graduation, he relocated to New York in search of employment. Upon returning to South Carolina, he became employed with the Russell Stover Candy Co. in Marion. He later moved to Darlington County and worked at Domino's Pizza before gaining employment at Tally Metal of Hartsville, where he maintained his desire to work until his health declined. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sherman of the home; mother, Mary Sherman Bethea; four daughters, Monica Foxworth and Quita Foxworth, both of Columbia, and Beth Wall and JoMonica Wall, both of Marion; three sons, Joseph Wall and Travis Wall, both of Marion, and Joseph Johnson of New York, N.Y.; nine sisters, Shirley (Otis) Eldridge of Marion, Easter Mae (James) Williams, Mary (Amos) Burton, Sherry Bishop, the Rev. Lillie Mae (Bobby) Marie, Annie Dewite, Sylvia (Herman) Mack, Linda (Manzie) Moore and Mary Frances (Bud) Swinton; four brothers, William Paige, Bulton Wilder, the Rev. Issac (Betty) Sherman and Jamie Wilder; granddaughter, Laniea Foxworth; two step-sons, Warren (Wanda) Freirson and Darrell Freirson.
