C. M. PENNINGTON
Services for Carl Melvin "C.M." Pennington, Jr., 81, were held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Mr. Pennington died Thursday, April 12. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Carl Melvin and Sarah Griggs Pennington, Sr. C. M. lived a full life worshiping his God, loving his family, helping his community, and devoting himself to his profession and the Masonic Lodge.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church and was a Sunday School teacher for over 45 years and a deacon. He was a World War II veteran, past commander of the American Legion, the 1992 Citizen of the Year, co-organizer of the Hartsville Rescue Squad, and scoutmaster for Troop 514 for 12 years. He was associated with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home which was established by his father in 1915. He was past master of Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and served as the lodge secretary for 35 years.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Eva Mae "Micki" Biggs Pennington of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Brucie Redfearn Pennington, Kimrey and Ann Marie McGirt Pennington, all of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Debra Pennington and Tommy Keith of Hartsville; sister, Breezy Somerville of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Jim Tingen, Stephen Tingen, Mel Pennington, Elizabeth Pennington, Kathryn Batson, Michael Batson, Shane Keith and Will Pennington; and two great-grandchildren, Walker Tingen and Nicki Rauch.
MARY A. McCASKILL
CASSATT – Services for Mary Alice Hinson McCaskill, 70, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Antioch Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Revs. Homer Hinson, Kenneth Bouldin and Howard Brown officiated directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Mrs. McCaskill was born
in Lee County, the daughter of the late Charlie and Estelle Hopkins. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She was a former WMU president and also taught Sunday School at Antioch Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Ann Cameron from Camden; two sons, Carl McCaskill Jr. of Camden and Mike McCaskill from Lugoff; one sister, Mildred "Millie" Maness, from Lugoff; four brothers, Charlie Hinson from Lugoff; William Hinson from Sheboygan, Wis., Wilburn "Boots" Hinson of Burgaw, N.C., and the Rev. Homer Hinson of Hartsville; four granddaughters, Carlette, Amanda, Leeane, and Allison McCaskill, all of Camden; and two grandsons, Chad and Chris Cameron of Camden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl "Peach" McCaskill Sr.
MARGARET F. ROSCOE
Services for Margaret Freeman Roscoe, 77, widow of J. W. Roscoe, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Revs. John Hamilton and Dr. Richard Bailey officiated. Burial was in Westview Memorial Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Roscoe was born
in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late John and Leona Gibson Freeman. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Linda Huggins of Hartsville and Mrs. Margaret Ann Jordan of Athens, Ga.; one son, Johnny Roscoe of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Michael Folk of Hartsville, Kari Jordan of Milledgeville, Ga. and Amy Jordan of Athens, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Caroline Folk of Hartsville; two step-grandsons, Brent Jones of Cheraw and Michael Thomas of Hartsville.

ULYSSES P. SWINNEY
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Services for Ulysses P. Swinney, 75, of Philadelphia, formerly of Hartsville, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, in First Emmanuel Baptist Church with burial in Fernwood Cemetery with Young & Young Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements.
Mr. Swinney died Sunday, April 1, after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Evander and Rosa Lee Swinney. He was educated in Darlington County public schools. At an early age he joined New Hopewell Baptist Church. He was inducted into the United States Navy in 1944 and received an honorable discharge in 1946. Upon moving to Philadelphia, he joined the First Emmanuel Baptist Church and worked as a construction worker and then at the Sealtest Milk Co., where he retired after 26 years.
Surviving are his wife, Edell "Sue" Ketter of Philadelphia, six daughters, Lillian, Lois, Jane, Cassandra, Alfreda and Melissa; a son, Basil; four sisters, Leona Budd, Jeanette Hurst and Judy Furlow, all of Baltimore, Md., and Edith Mae Haynesworth of Hartsville; a brother, Henry (Sonny) Swinney of Darlington; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. – Isaac Wheeler, 76, of Ridgewood, N.J., formerly of Hartsville, died Sunday in a Ridgewood hospital after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
RAYMOND TYNER
PATRICK – Services for Raymond "Cousie" Tyner, 53, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. The Rev. Edward Freeman officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Tyner died Thursday, April 12. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Doc and Gladys Teal Tyner.
Surviving are his son, Timmy Tyner of Bennettsville; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth C. and Timmy Lackey of Hartsville; six brothers, Howard Teal of Society Hill, William Tyner, James Cecil Tyner, James Edward Tyner, Donald Ray Tyner, Jimmy Lee Tyner, all of Patrick; five sisters, Myrtle Johnson of Hartsville, Doris Teal of Patrick, Minnie Dixon of Patrick, Betty Jean Turner of Patrick, Lena Potts of Salisbury, N.C.; and one grandchild.

LUCILLE McINVILLE
DARLINGTON – Services for Lucille Miles McInville, 70, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Black Creek Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. McInville died Tuesday, April 17, in a Florence hospital. She was born
in Florence County, daughter of the late Walter W. and Ethelda S. Miles. She was the widow of the late Clarence "Buster" McInville. Mrs. McInville was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and Ladies Sunday School Class.
Surviving are seven sons and daughters-in-laws, Wayne (Vera) McInville of Society Hill, Paul McInville of Darlington, Larry McInville of Darlington, Mike (Kelly) McInville of Hartsville, Danny (Kim) McInville, Randy (Tina) McInville and Billy (Kim) McInville, all of Darlington; four daughters and son-in-laws, Beverly (Jimmy) Streett, Kathy White, Tammie (Scott) Windham, Wanda (Scott) Gainey, all of Darlington; 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one brother, Archie Miles of Pearland, Texas; two sisters, Christine Evans of Darlington and Kathleen Lyles of Lumberton, N.C.
The family will receive friends this evening, April 18, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

COLON M. GRIGGS
Services for Colon Maxie Griggs, 84, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Homer Hinson and Jackie Hinson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home with Masonic rites.
Mr. Griggs was born
in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Wylie and Maggie Kelly Griggs. He was retired from Sonoco Products after 42 1/2 years, member of the Old Timers Club, Cedar Creek Baptist Church, Chesterfield Masonic Lodge, Darlington County Gideons and loved to farm all his life. He was one of 12 children.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Marvin and Elaine Whittle of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Loran and Linda Griggs of Hartsville; two sisters, Geneva and Essie Huggins of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Phil Whittle of Landrum, S.C., Lori Ann Schechter of Albany, Ga., and Jeffery L. Griggs of Atlanta, Ga.; four great-grandchildren, Cody T. Griggs of Atlanta, Ga., Zachary W. Rigby of Chadds Ford, Pa., Lazarus E. Schechter and Eilish C. Schechter, both of Albany, Ga.; three step-daughters, Miriam Griggs, Carolyn Griggs, and Jenell Britt of Hartsville; eight step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida Mae Johnson Griggs and by his second wife, Mary Winburn Teal Griggs.
Pallbearers were Mr. Griggs' nephews, Wade Huggins, Wilson, William and Bobby Griggs, Ken Perdue, James Wiley, "Pete" Perdue, Kenneth Huggins and Mitchell Gainey.

LESTER J. BLACKWELL
COLUMBIA – Services for Lester Jerome Blackwell Sr., 93, will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 25, 2001, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Rosewood Baptist Church or to Palmetto Health Hospice.
Mr. Blackwell, husband of the late Eva Walters Blackwell, died Sunday, April 22. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Barney E. Blackwell and Maggie Lee Rogers Blackwell. He attended Furman University. He retired after 42 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of the Letter Carriers Association. Mr. Blackwell was a member and deacon of Rosewood Baptist Church and was a former member of the Columbia Choral Society.
Surviving are sons, Joe D. Blackwell of Greenville, James A. Blackwell and Lester J. Blackwell Jr. of Columbia; a brother, Bryan Livingston Blackwell of Hartsville; sisters, Miriam Myers of Scranton, and Martha Windham of Greenville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sons, Barney Blackwell, Burney Blackwell and Clyde J. Blackwell Sr.
