CHARLES SHAW
Services with Masonic rites for Charles Russell Shaw Sr., 68, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Grover Johnson and Ed Griggs officiated with entombment in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
Mr. Shaw died Friday, May 11. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Johnnie Russell and Rena Brown Shaw. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church and a deacon. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 47 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and the WOW, and was a constable.
Surviving are his wife, Emmie Winburn Shaw of Hartsville; son, Charles Russell Shaw Jr.; daughter, Dr. Patricia Anne Shaw, both of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Alton Campbell of Camden; half-brother, James Russell Shaw of Hartsville; and granddaughter, Cari Renee Shaw, also of Hartsville.
JEAN LITSEY
Jean Ann Allen Litsey, 83, died Saturday, May 12. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hartsville Memorial Library. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Litsey, widow of Berry L. Litsey Sr. was born
in Carthage, Mo., a daughter of the late George and Nina Giles Allen. She loved life.
Surviving are her son, Berry Litsey of Hartsville; daughter, Mathuda Bessinger of Tampa, Fla.; and grandchildren, Nina Bessinger and Lewis Litsey.
PAULINE FENNELL
DARLINGTON – Services for Pauline Matthews Fennell, 75, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Fennell died Wednesday, May 16. She was born
in Darlington County, daughter of the late Harvey and Sarah Hutchinson Matthews. She was married
to the late George Charlie Fennell. She was a housewife and loving mother. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Florence.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne Fennell and Marion "Buddy" Fennell, both of Darlington; four daughters, Larue (Christopher) Rogers, Judy (Bennie) Perkins, Faye (Laverne) McKnight and Wanda (Charles) Noonan, all of Darlington; four brothers, William Matthews of Hartsville, Clifton Matthews of Darlington, Leroy Matthews of Florence and John David Matthews of Rubidoux, Calif.; 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Fennell was preceded in death by a daughter, Clara Mae Fennell and sister, Ruby Lynch Powell.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, May 18, at the funeral home.

DARLINGTON – Services for Katie Elizabeth Medlin Greene, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 18, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Greene died Wednesday, May 16. She was born
in Darlington County, daughter of the late James Franklin and Edna English Medlin. She was married
to the late Charles Greene, and they operated Liberty Lunch for many years and later owned and operated Katcha Snak Sandwich Shop. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church before recently becoming a member of Mont Clare Baptist Church.
Surviving are a step-son, Charles Greene Jr. of Wilmington, N.C.; one brother, Marshall Medlin of Darlington; several nieces and nephews, Joe Medlin Jr., Gladys M. Hodges, Gayle M. Cawood, Melvin Medlin, Frankie M. Burgess, David Medlin, Georgia M. Mozingo, Clyde Gregg Jr., Ann E. Gregg, Joyce M. Easton, Marcia M. Andrews and Sherrill M. Fussell; also, special friends, Frank Dodge and Tammy Shoemake.
She was predeceased by siblings, Joe Medlin Sr., Bill Medlin, Warren Medlin and Virginia Medlin Gregg.
Pallbearers were great nephews, Barry Hodges, Keith Hodges, Phil Hodges, C. B. Gregg Jr., Joseph Cawood and Benjamin Cawood.

LAMAR – Mr. Alphonso Hines Sr. died Monday, May 14, 2001, in a Hartsville hospital, after a sudden illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence at 1721 Una Road.

Services for Alphonso "Al" Hines Sr. will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 18, 2001, at Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens with professional services entrusted to Hines Funeral Home.
Wake services were held at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel in Hartsville on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Mr. Hines died Monday, May 14, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late William and Lila Mae Grooms Hines. He was educated in the public schools and first worked the farm with his parents and seven siblings. He married
early in life to Lula Mae Chavis Hines and to this union six children were born, all of whom survive him. He worked over 40 years as a supervisor of general services with the International Paper Company in Bethune. He was first a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and later he re-affiliated with the Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church. He was a member of Masonic Ebenezer Lodge #436 and the Order of Eastern Stars Alcott Chapter #321. He was also a past master of the lodge and a Patron for the Stars.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Lula Mae Hines, include five sons, Ronnie Hines of Fayetteville, N.C., Mithell (Kim) Hines and Bennie (Anna) Hines, both of Hyattsville, Md., Alphonso Hines Jr. of Bowie, Md., and Dana Hines of Decatur, Ga.; one daughter, Judy Hines-Perryman of Bowie, Md.; four brothers, Ernest (Mary) Hymes and Wesley (Ann) Hymes, both of Washington, D.C., Rufus (Neomi) Hymes of Greensboro, N.C., and Benoid Hymes of Lamar; one sister, Emily (Odell) Lucas of Mitchelville, Md.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Frankenberger, widow of Leander "Lee" R. Frankenberger, died Wednesday, May 16. Born in Westville, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Silas Rufus and Emma Lottie Gaskins Jordan. Mrs. Frankenberger was retired from Socone Manufacturing and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Sanda E. Atkinson of Hartsville, Joann Capers of West Columbia and Audrey Sharpe of Lakewood, Wash.; two sons, Charles Roberts of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jimmy Roberts of Milwaukee, Ore.; one brother, Silas Jordan of Tacoma, Wa.; three sisters, Sara Cates and Alma Digman, both of Lugoff, and Joyce Rabon of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Richard Allen Frankenberger.

Funeral services for John Cord Winburn, III, 35, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Hood and the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Winburn died Tuesday, May 15, 2001. Born in Florence County, he was a son of John Cord and Betty Beasley Winburn Jr. He was baptized at Fourth Street Baptist Church and was devoted to his son and fiancee.
Surviving are his fiancee, LaDonna Hatchell of Hartsville; son, Johnathan Chase Winburn of Hartsville; father and step-mother, John Cord "J.C." and Elly Winburn Jr. of McBee; mother, Betty Beasley Winburn of Hartsville; sister, Scarlet "Sissy" Winburn Hopkins of Hartsville; grandmother, Anne Beasley of Hartsville; nephews and nieces, Michael, Brad and Stacie Hopkins.
ADLINE BROWN
Funeral services for Adline Brown were held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.
Mrs. Brown died Monday, May 7, in Oakhaven Nursing Home. She was born
April 15, 1908, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Willie and Nazaree Jackson Peterson. She received her education in Darlington public schools and was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Agalee Peterson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a grandson; a granddaughter; great-granddaughter and a great-grandson.
MARY BRISTO PATE
Funeral services for Mary Bristo Pate were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pate died Friday, May 11, in Carolina Pines Hospital after an illness. She was born
Jan. 17, 1918 in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Ruth and Boisey James Bristo Sr. She was educated in Chesterfield County schools, member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Centenary United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Joint Stock Lodge #728; Jeanette Tent #196, United Methodist Women, West Side Garden Club, and Usher Board. She retired from Jackson Cleaners after 33 years of service.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Feaster of Sanford, N.C., and Dorothy (Rocelle) Davis of McBee; two sons, Bogan (Cora) Pate of Hartsville, James (Betty) Pate of Boston, Mass.; three sisters, Lou Doris Jackson, Vivian Moore and Pinkie (Robert) Lighty; a brother, Boisey James Bristo Jr.; a cousin, Addie Jett of Hartsville; two sisters-in-law; a son-in-law; goddaughter; 14 grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephew and other close relatives and friends.
