Graveside services for Frances Register Thomas, 79, of Lydia, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lydia, with Rev. for 58 years, attended Columbia College and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Carl Major Thomas of Lydia; son, Terry (Mary) Thomas of Lydia; two daughters, Lynn T. Brown of Lydia and Susan T. (Barry) McGirt of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and four grandchildren, Greg Brown, ErinThomas, Carl McGirt and Michelle McGirt.
JIM E. SCURRY
Jim Edward Scurry, 64, died on Monday, May 22, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Central Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mr. Scurry was born
in Lee County, the son of the late James Henry and Geneva Weaver Scurry. He served in the United States Army. Mr. Scurry started his career with R.B. Pond Construction Company from 1953-1967 and then became president and manager of Industrial Paving, Inc. from 1967 to the present. He attended Central Baptist Church and was a member of Syracuse Rod and Gun Club, Darlington County Ducks Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Mr. Scurry was also an avid gardener. Surviving are his wife, Delores O’Neal Scurry of the home; a son, James Edward (Trudy) Scurry of Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Susan Scurry) Graham of Columbia; two step-sons, Jeffery Lee (Bunny) Kelly and James Gregory (Suzy) Kelly, both of Darlington; eleven grandchildren including Heather Kelly of the home; five brothers, J.T. (Carol) Scurry of Florence, Roland (Mary) Scurry of Bishopville, Lewis Scurry of Columbia, Ernest (Judy) Scurry of Darlington, and Allen (Ava) Scurry of Bishopville; and two sisters, Marie Cox of Bishopville, and Mrs. T.B. (Ruby) Northcutt of Hartsville. Mr. Scurry was preceded in death by two sisters, Willie Mae Carroway and Betty Jean Scurry; and three brothers, David Scurry, Harold Scurry, and Wayne Scurry. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are six daughters, Ruth Baker and Nancy Burris, both of Lugoff, Peggy Doris Hinson of Hartsville, Bonnie Wingard of Camden, Joyce Cook of Dalzell, and Bobbie Jean Wilson of Lancaster; Richard Barrett of Kershaw, Jack Garrison of Bishopville, Don Garrison of Lancaster, Wayne Garrison of Cassatt; four step-sons, Hayward A. Jones of Fayetteville, N.C., Murray A. Jones of Gaston, Steven A. Jones of Lugoff, Ray P. Jones of Columbia; 34 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, David Garrison, and a step-daughter, Martha Matthew.

in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Carrie Hines. Mrs. Thomas received her education at Butler High School. She was a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years; she served as chairperson of the senior choir, vice president of the Usher’s Club for 60 or more years, a member of the gospel choir and chairperson of chapter of the WSES. Surviving are nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and was employed with Chesterfield Lumber Co. and was an Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Margaret O’Neal McFarland of Darlington; a daughter, Jamie (Monte) Monroe of Temple Hill, Md.; Four sons, Toney (Toni) McFarland of Bowie, Md., Curtis (Rochelle) McFarland, Jr. Temple Hill, Md., Jeffery McFarland of Capital Right, Md. and Phillips (Elivira) Reyes of Fayetteville, N.C.; seven brothers, Carey (Mabie) Turner and Jimmy (Margaret) McFarland both of Hartsville, Townsend McFarland Jr. of Society Hill, the Rev. in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Edmund and Maggie Whay Chestnut and was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She was married
early in life to the late Grover Thomas and that union was blessed with 12 children, eight of which survive her. After marriage, she became a member of Kingsville United Methodist Church where she served as a member of the choir, the United Methodist Women and was honored as the officials "Mother of the Church". Survivors are five daughters, Grove Mae (Levi) Johnson and Harriet Hough, both of Hartsville, Irene (Lawrence Jr.) Scott, Angeline (Clarence) Williams and Barbara (Leon) Mayshack, all of Allentown, Pa.; three sons, Eddie (Mary Lee) Thomas, Billy (Mary Ella) Thomas and Charles Thomas, all of Hartsville; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two children she reared, Damon Smith and Tyrone "Link" Johnson.

Born in Darlington County, he was the son of the late Louis A. and Vivian White Turnage. He was a graduate of Clemson University. He retired from Sonoco after 35 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He served as a U.S. Navy Pilot in World War II. Surviving are his wife, Ivy Umbers Turnage of Hartsville; sons, Dr. Louis W. (Pam) Turnage Jr. of Gaffney, Michael (Tonya) Turnage, pharmacist of Savannah, Ga., David Turnage, of Hartsville; a daughter, Vivian T. (Jerry) Leese of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; brothers, Robert E.Turnage of Orlando, Fla., Rev. Richard W. Turnage of Pawleys Island and six grandchildren.

Born in Camden, she was the daughter of the late Colin Williams and Molly Hunnicutt Hough. She was retired from the Wateree Kendall Plant and was a member of East Camden Church of God, where she was an adult Sunday School teacher for 40 years. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Gardner of Camden and Clarine and Carol Mozingo of Bishopville; two sons and daughter-in-law, B. Fred Barnes of Camden and James W. "Bill" and Evelyn Barnes of Camden; two sisters, Edwilla Ham and Willene Goodale, both of Camden; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George Wallace and Pauline Watford Fields. She was a member of the House of Prayer Holiness Church and was employed with MSD of Darlington for 17 years. Surviving are two sons, George Fields and Adam Fields, both of Lamar; a daughter, Loraine Moody of Lamar; sisters, Mary Sue Mozingo of Hartsville and Bessie Lee Knotts of Lamar; three grandchildren, Kandis Moody, Tiffany Fields and George Fields Jr.
