CECIL S. ARNOLD JR.
DARLINGTON – Services for Cecil Samuel Arnold Jr., 80, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Arnold died Thursday afternoon, July 12, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Arnold was born
in Lee County on Oct. 3, 1920, a son of the late Cecil Samuel Arnold Sr. and Lena Webster Arnold. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, 5th Infantry Division, and was held as a prisoner of war in Germany for seven and a half months. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the Grounds and Building Committee, was a member of the Kitchen Ministry, the Administrative Board, the Board of Trustees, the Finance Committee where he served as secretary and treasurer for 31 years, and a member of the American Legion, as well as the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. Mr. Arnold retired as a foreman from James Rivers.
He was preceded in death by his son, Cecil Samuel "Sammy" Arnold III in 1986.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances Byrd Arnold of the home; a daughter-in-law, Tarrall B. Arnold of Plano, Texas; two grandsons, Cecil Samuel (Layla) Arnold IV of Houston, Texas, and Lawrence Conway (Amy) Arnold of Austin, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Christian Ian Arnold and Erin McKayla Arnold; and two very special friends of the family, Shirley and Larry Brunson.

HOWARD WALKER
Services for Howard Walker, 45, will be held at 3 p.m. today, July 18, 2001, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Walker died Sunday, July 15, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born
in Hartsville, a son of Katherine Walker and the late Vandier Walker. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville, are a sister, Wilma Middelion of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Phillip Walker and Henry Walker, both of Columbia; two aunts, Christine Allen and Nicey Gray, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; an uncle, Edward Frazier of Chocowinity, N.C. and other close relatives and friends.
DONALD C. HORNE
GOOSE CREEK – Services for Donald C. Horne, 61, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Darlington. Interment followed in Florence National Cemetery.
Mr. Horne died Wednesday, July 11, in a Charleston hospital after an illness.
Mr. Horne was born
in Union County, the son of the late Ray and Hazel Smith Horne. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a master chief after 30 years of service. Mr. Horne was Baptist by faith.
Surviving are two step-brothers, Jerry W. Warren and Coley B. Warren, both of Darlington; a step-sister, Joyce Williams of Darlington, and several cousins and close friends.
MACK McKIEVER
DOVESVILLE – Services for Deacon Mack McKiever were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Wake services were held Saturday, July 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Deacon McKiever died Thursday, July 12, at his home after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Moses and Maggie David McKiever. He received his elementary education in Darlington County public schools. At the age of 13, he moved to Detroit, Mich., where he completed high school. At an early age, he joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and after moving to Detroit, he joined East Lake Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and a deacon. In Detroit, he met and married
Millie McInnis 48 years ago. This union was blessed with a son. He was gainfully employed by Chrysler Corp. until he retired.
In 1976, Deacon McKiever and his family moved back home to Dovesville and rejoined Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served faithfully as chairman of the Deacon Board until his passing. After moving back to Darlington, he worked with Clanton Auto Sales and retired after 20 years.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Millie McKiever of the home; a son, Michael McKiever of Florida; a loving sister, Mrs. Maggie Williams of Dovesville; three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law; devoted nieces and nephews.
ANNIE ALLEN
Services for Annie "Hanna" Allen were held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2001, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. J. D. Blue, pastor, officiating. Burial was held in Greenlawn Cemetery with professional services entrusted to Hines Funeral Home, Inc.
Mrs. Allen died Thursday, July 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born
in Calhoun County on April 15, 1907, a daughter of the late Robert and Corrie White. She was married
to the late Wilkin Allen and this union was blessed with one child who preceded her in death. She was a member and an original founder of Second Baptist Church in Hartsville.
Survivors include two adopted sons, Robert "BoBo" McCain and Frank (Diane) Thomas, both of Hartsville; one adopted daughter, Ella Marie Benson of Hartsville; one great-granddaughter, Larissa Rene Andrews-Wayne of New York, N.Y.; two nieces, Virginia Buckmon and Natasha Buckmon, both of Columbia; three nephews, Tyshaun Buckmon of Columbia, George Winds of Orangeburg and Abraham White of Creston, S.C.; a host of other relatives and very dear friends.
HALBERT E. SMITH
Services for Halbert E. Smith, 41, were held at 12 Noon on Saturday, July 14, 2001, in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Sunday, July 8, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of Moses Smith Sr. and the late Hattie Smith. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School and a member of new Hopewell Baptist Church.
Surviving other than his father of Darlington are a son, Mario Hunter of Darlington; three sisters, Mildred Jackson of Society Hill; Henrietta George of Baltimore, Md., and Priscilla Lee of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; four brothers, Moses Smith Jr. and Samuel E. Smith, both of Baltimore, Md., James L. Smith of Society Hill and Albert Smith of Far Rockaway, N.Y.
MARY LEE BRUNSON
DARLINGTON – Services for Mary Lee Harbin Brunson, 86, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, July 18, at the home on 112 Williamson Place, Darlington.
Mrs. Brunson died Monday evening, July 16, in her residence after an illness. She was the wife of Robert Benjamin Brunson for 63 years and was born
in Marion, the daughter of the late Hal Henderson and Helen Grace Johnston Harbin. She moved to Florence at an early age where she taught in the Darlington County School System and then in the Florence School system for 25 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church as well as past president of Women of the Church, a member of the Thursday Book Club, Garden Club, and the Retired Teacher's Association.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are three daughters, Katherine Lynette Brunson Wright of Darlington, Mary Ann Brunson (Richard) Nash of Florence and Nancy Elizabeth Brunson (Rich) Clifford of Seabrook, Texas; six grandchildren, Ben Wright, Kathryn Nash, Richard Nash Jr. Robert Nash, Richard Clifford, and Brandon Clifford; one great-grandchild, Bryan Wright; a sister, Martha "Tot" Bryant of Florence; a brother-in-law, Hugh Brunson of Darlington; and a sister-in-law, Catherine "Cappy" Brunson of Darlington.
Mrs. Brunson was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Harbin Pike.

IRENE DIXON GILBERT
Funeral services for Irene Dixon Gilbert, 65, will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at the First Original Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. James B. Skipper will officiate with burial in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Original Free Will Baptist Church.
Mrs. Gilbert, widow of Sonny Gilbert, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Nancy Bell Player Dixon. She was a member of the First Original Free Will Baptist Church and was retired from Red Fox Apparel.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Gail G. and Craig Watson, Theresa G. and Mike King, all of Hartsville; brothers, Wade Dixon and Earl Dixon, both of Patrick; sisters, Patty Gainey and Carrie O'Neal, both of Patrick; grandchildren, Crystal Watson, Ashley Watson, Lance Watson and Elizabeth King.
