ALTA THOMAS
Mrs. Alta Thomas, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

ALTA MAE THOMAS
Services for Alta Mae Thomas, 81, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, in Union Baptist Church in Rembert. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thomas died Saturday, Aug. 3, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She received her education in Sumter County public schools.
Surviving are a son, Eddie Thomas of Hartsville; four sisters, Hattie Thomas of Hartsville, Rosa Lee (Joseph) Cratch of Rembert, Mary (Jerry) Weaver of Charlotte, N.C., and Roberta Thomas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Charles (Fanny) Thomas of Queen, N.Y. and Joseph (Margret) Thomas of Rembert; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM B. MATUSE
Services for William Bill Matuse, 89, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, from the Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Beck Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Savannah Advent Christian Church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Matuse was born in Lee County and was a member of Savannah Advent Christian Church.
Surviving are two sons, Tillman and George Matuse of Hartsville; two daughters, Alice Beasley of Hartsville and Sally Mumford of Darlington; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

WHIT STOKES
SOCIETY HILL – Services for Whitfield "Whit" Stokes, 83, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment will be in Darlington Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Stokes died Wednesday, Aug. 8, in a Hartsville nursing home after an illness. He was retired from Sonoco after over 35 years of service and was born in Darlington County, the son of the late John Cleve and Mary Wrye Stokes. He was married to the late Agnes Morrell Stokes. Mr. Stokes was a charter member of Mont Clare Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Harold (Joyce) Stokes of Florence; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Carolyn) Cribb of Society Hill; three grandchildren, Mrs. Larry (Pam) Ward of Florence, Stuart Cribb of Charleston and Benjamin Cribb of Society Hill; a great-grandchild, Chandler Ward; and three sisters, Mrs. Clyde (Elmer) Wallace of Hartsville, Mrs. R. T. (Hazel) Munn of Florence and Mrs. James (Dorothy) Dowling of Lamar.
Memorials may be made to Mont Clare Baptist Church, 1632 Mont Clare Road, Darlington, S.C. 29540.

EVELINA BLACK
SOCIETY HILL – Services for Evelina Black, 87, were held Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Black died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in a Mullins nursing center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Mary Jackson. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County and was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Levern (Phyllis) Black of Society Hill; two brothers, Clyde (Elizabeth) Dixon of Hartsville and Gene (Henrietta) Dixon of Trenton, N.J.; two grandchildren, Tiara and Ashley Black of Society Hill; sister-in-law, Serena Dixon; nieces, nephews, cousins, and other close relatives and friends.

MARGARET CARROLL
Funeral services for Margaret "Polly" B. Carroll were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church. Father Tim Brennen, Celebrant, officiated directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice of Pee Dee, 555 East Cheves Street, Florence, S.C. 29506.
Mrs. Carroll, wife of Joe F. Carroll Jr., died Saturday, Aug. 11. Born in Danville, Va, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Lydia Margaret Lunsford Blackwell. She was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church.
Surviving are her husband of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph F. and Nancy Carroll III of McKinney, Texas, and John M. Carroll of North Myrtle Beach; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret C. and Pete Tingen of Hartsville; sister-in-law, Mae Blackwell of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Tony Colvin of Mid Center, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

FLOYD W. TIMMONS
JEFFERSON – Services for Floyd W. Timmons, 89, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 15, 2001, at Providence Baptist Church. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum directed by Sutton Funeral Home of Pageland. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, S.C. 29709.
Mr. Timmons, widower of Gladys Mills Timmons, died Sunday, Aug. 12, at Brian Center, Monroe, N.C. He was the son of the late Alfred and Aggie Horne Timmons. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. and a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Julian Timmons of Gastonia, N.C.; a daughter, Margie Eubanks of Jefferson; two sisters, Roberta Huneycutt of Marshville, N.C., and Christine Brewer of Chesterfield; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

OTIS DRIVER
Graveside services for Otis Heyward Driver Jr., 78, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 15, 2001, at Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The Revs. Stan Dickerson and Mark Lancaster will officiate. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Driver died Monday, Aug. 13. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Heyward Driver Sr. and Addie Norton Goddale Driver.
Surviving is his sister, Myrtle D. Hall of Hartsville.

MAUISE NORTHCUTT
Funeral services for Mauise Elizabeth Northcutt, 68, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 15, 2001, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dora Gafford will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Northcutt died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late William Daniel and Nonna Caddell Wallace Sr.
Surviving are her husband, Edward V. Northcutt of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Louie V. and Loretta Northcutt, James David and Linda Northcutt, and Charles E. Northcutt, all of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Norma Jean and Elbert Catoe of Hartsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Ann Wallace, James Wallace, all of Hartsville, David and Joane Wallace of Rockwell, S.C., Joe and Amey Wallace of Burlington, N.C., Byerly Wallace of Andrews, S.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Fannie Mae Chamberlin of Gold Hill, N.C., Mary and David Honeycutt of Rockwell, N.C., Ina and Jenkins Kelley of Hartsville, Brenda Ard of Spencer, N.C., and Dora Lee Wallace of High Point, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

FRANKLIN H. SMOTHERS
Funeral services for Franklin Hardy Smothers, 75, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Clifton Barfield officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or a charity of your choice.
Mr. Smothers died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Margaret Elizabeth Turnage Smothers. He was retired from the Ashland Oil Company. He served in the U. S. Marines for four years and was a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Faye Lafferty Smothers of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas F. and Merle S. Smothers of Beech Island, S.C., and Ralph L. Smothers of Hartsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Diane Smothers of Santee, James H. and Della Smothers of Mobile, Ala.; sisters and brother-in-law, Maisie S. Mims and Bernice and Harvey Teal, all of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
