COLIE MATTHEWS
BENNETTSVILLE – Funeral services for the Rev. Colie LeGrand Matthews, 86, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. John Bryant and Jerry Rose officiated with burial in Matthews Cemetery, Coward, S.C.
The Rev. Matthews died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late William Ross and Lillie Pickett Matthews. He was a member of the First Congregational Holiness Church. He served as a Congregational Holiness pastor for over 50 years, including 23 years at Driggers Chapel in Blenheim, S.C.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Driggers Matthews of Bennettsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Danny and Becky Driggers of Bennettsville, Colie Matthews Jr. of Florence; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Pee Wee Johnson of Hartsville; brother, George Matthews of Wadesboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Doris Yarborough Matthews, and a son, William Lawrence Matthews.
CHRISTINE S. WATFORD
Funeral services for Christine Stanton Watford, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Surrett officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Wesley United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Mrs. Watford died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001. Born in Dillon County, she was a daughter of the late Willie G. and Ella Goodwin Stanton. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and prior to her illness was an active and faithful member of the Elizabeth McIntosh Sunday School Class, as well as the Clyburn-Jordan McKorrell Circle. She served as counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship and was a volunteer in the Children's Department. She was also a former member of the Byerly Hospital Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, J. Dan Watford of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, J. Dan and Linda Watford Jr. of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Libby W. and Bill Gabel of Hartsville, Jeanne W. and Don Garforth of Clinton, Miss.; grandchildren, Angela Fox of Hartsville, Suzy Hallahan of Long Beach, Calif., Lisa Gabel Barrows of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Laura Gabel of Hartsville, LeAnne Gabel of Hartsville, Jamie Garforth Martin of Clinton, Miss., Leigh Garforth of Clinton, Miss., Ben Garforth of Clinton, Miss.; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Willie Hugh Stanton, and a sister, Eleanor Stanton Cannarella.
ABRAHAM ROBINSON
NEW YORK – Abraham Robinson, 56, formerly of Hartsville, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in a local hospital. Local arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Robinson was the son of Ruth Robinson and the late Aaron Robinson.

RUDELL BENTON
COLUMBIA – Graveside services for Rudell D. Benton, 86, were held Aug. 29, 2001 at the Pine Grove United Methodist Chruch Cemetery in Darlington, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Benton died Monday, Aug. 27, in a Columbia hospital after an illness. She was born
in Lee County, a daughter of the late Perry Davis and Bessie Chaplin Davis. She was an active member of Earlwood Baptist Church, and received a civic award from the City of Columbia for outstanding community service in 1999. Mrs. Benton operated a boarding house at the University of South Carolina for many years and enjoyed reading and Bible study. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. Benton, who died in 1997.
Surviving are one son, Bruce Benton of Myrtle Beach; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Holland of Camden; two brothers, C. B. Davis of Columbia and Perry Davis Jr. of Florence; one sister, Thalia Ham of Columbia; one grandchild, Shandon Benton of Orlando, Fla.

AUSTIN DAVIS
DARLINGTON – Services for Jeremy Austin "J.D.: Davis were held Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001 at Darlington High Gymnasium with Minister Andre Arthur officiating. Burial followed in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Davis was born
in Darlington, a son of Frederick and Cynthia Jones Davis. He died on Saturday, Aug. 18, following an automobile accident. He attended Darlington County public schools and was a graduate of Birchwood High School in Columbia and continued his education at Florence-Darlington Technical College.
Survivors include parents, father and step-mother, Frederick and Janet Davis of Darlington; mother and step-father, Cynthia J. and Johnny L. McDaniel of Darlington; a son, Zion Shamar Davis; a daughter, Janyiah Armani Davis, both of Darlington; a brother, Shaun Frederick Davis of Florence; three step-brothers, Andre Smith of Newburgh, N.Y., Jauron Smith of Hartsville and Timothy Jeffery of Florence; two step-sisters, Danielle McCray of Virginia Beach, Va. and April McCray of Timmonsville; grandmother, Mrs. Eula M. Small and step-grandfather, Willie Small of Darlington; step-grandmothers, Ms. Juanita Carter and Ms. Ida Davis of Florence; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Missy McKay.
THOMAS L. GARDNER
McBEE – Graveside services for Thomas Lewis Gardner, 59, were held Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001 at Union Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel. Rev. Homer Hinson officiated.
Mr. Gardner was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Cary and Dolly Deaver Gardner.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Mozingo Gardner of McBee; sons, Eddie and Rodney Gardner of McBee; brothers, Claude H. Gardner of Ormond Beach, Fla. and Cecil, James and George Gardner of Bethune; sisters, Patsy Catoe of Elizabethtown, Fla., Martha Floyd of Lexington, Ky., Katie Cobb of Camden, Brenda Rawlinson of Florence and Linda Short of Bethune; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie and Kenneth Gardner.
NORWOOD WILSON
DARLINGTON – Graveside services for Norwood Wilson, 86, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001 at 11 a.m. in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Wilson died Sunday, Aug. 26 in a local hospital after an illness. He was born
in St. Charles, S.C. on September 17, 1914 and was the son of the late Paul D. and Maude Kirven Wilson. He was a member of the Darlington Presbyterian Church, Men's Sunday School Class and was a former deacon of the church. Mr. Wilson was a member and past-president of the Darlington Kiwanis Club and was also active in the Big Brother Association. He was co-owner of Darlington Propane Gas Company along with his brother, Neille A. Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death last year by his wife, Annie Margaret Wilson, and a daughter, Louise "Weez" Wilson Hughes, in 1997.
Survivors include one son, Peter Graves "Splinter" Wilson of Taos, N.M.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
