Services for Eileen King Hall, 85, were held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001 at Gum Branch Baptist Church. Rev. Jeff Gardner and Rev. Dr. Bev Kennedy officiated, with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Hall, widow of Clyburn Hall, died Sunday, Aug. 6. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of Salley Maybelle King, and was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church.
Surviving are her three sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Jerry Hall of Hartsville; Bobby and Sandra Hall of Columbia; Danny and Debbie Hall of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Scott Atkinson of Hartsville; seven grandchildren, Frank Tyson, Ashley Hall, Jeff Hall, April Icenhour, Dean Hall, Clay Hall, Zach Atkinson; five great-grandchildren, Cole McGrady, Corey McGrady, Josh Icenhour, Landon Icenhour and Walt Lilly.
ROSA BOATWRIGHT
SUMMERVILLE – Graveside services for Rosa Bacot Simons Boatwright, 92, were held Aug. 29, 2001 in Grove Hill Cemetery. Services were directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Boatwright died Monday, Aug. 27, in the Presbyterian Home of Summerville. She was born
in Charleston and was the daughter of the late John Thompson and Ada Jenkins Simons. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. Mrs. Boatwright was a former librarian for the Darlington County Library, and was a member of the Colonial Dames.
Mrs. Boatwright was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Boatwright, who passed away in 1952.
Survivors include one son, William H. Boatwright Jr. of Brevard, N.C.; two daughters, Ann Boatwright Igoe of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Margaret Boatwright Simpson of Hartsville; one sister, Laura Simons Newman of Salisbury, N.C. six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

JOHN G. GRANT SR.
Graveside services for John Glendon Grant Sr., 89, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 5, 2001, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Eddie Willis with Masonic Rites following. The family will receive friends following the services at the graveside. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel in Spartanburg is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Grant died Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for Restorative Care. A native of Cardova, Ala., he was the son of the late Clarence Larkin and Ramoth Cook Grant. He was retired from Clifton Manufacturing Co. and Earnhardt Electrical Co. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church of Hartsville and a former member of Converse Baptist Church and Cannon's Campground Baptist Church. He was post master of Clifton Masonic Lodge #215; post master of Converse Masonic Lodge #343. He was a 32nd Degree Mason; member of The Hejaz Shriners; member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA, and was a member of Piedmont Lodge of Perfection, Spartanburg Chapter Rose Croix, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Polson Grant of Hartsville; one son, John G. "Glen" Grant Jr. of Easley; two daughters, Carolyn G. Linder and Anne G. Bailey, both of Spartanburg; one sister, Betty G. Richardson of Greenville; six children and 13 great-grandchildren. He was first married
to the late Louise Brown Grant.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Carolyn Linder, 941 Old Converse Road, Spartanburg.
BROWNIE BELL
Mass of Christian burial for Elizabeth Monk "Brownie" Bell, 80, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father Arturo Dalupang Celebrant. Final commendation and farewell prayers were in Magnolia Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church Building Fund.
Mrs. Bell, widow of George F. Bell, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001. Born in Sampson County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late William James and Madge Darden Monk. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Gwen Bell of Raleigh, N.C., Sam and Cheryl Bell of Tomball, Texas, David and Ann Bell of Palm Bay, Fla., Charles and Phung Bell of Vicksburg, Miss., Allen and Alma Bell of Melbourne, Fla., Paul and Emily Bell of E. Longmeadow, Mass.; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Lee Stogner of Taylors, S.C., Patricia and Keith Hargrove of Asheville, N.C.; brother, John Monk of Newton Grove, N.C.; sisters, Rose Cilio of Morton Grove, Ill., Alice Grantham of Salemburg, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
LILLIAN Y. LEWIS
DARLINGTON – Lillian Yarboro Lewis, 82, died Friday morning in a Florence hospital after an illness. Services were held Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church. Interment followed in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lewis, wife of the late Fulton Dewitt Lewis Sr., was born
in Darlington County the daughter of the late Thomas Eligh and Mattie Blackwell Yarboro. She was a retired legal secretary for attorney Melvin Hyman, Pauling and James Law Firm, and Edwards and Dargan Insurance Company. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Grace Sunday School Class.
Surviving are a son, Fulton Dewitt (Amey) Lewis Jr. of Darlington; two daughters, Mrs. Lynn Lewis (Jerry) Wise of Florence and Mrs. Angela Lewis (Gene) Watts of Darlington; five grandchildren, Dr. Fulton Dewitt Lewis III of Beaufort, William Bee Ravenel Lewis of Columbia, Josh Louin Wise of Charlotte, N.C., Elizabeth Kristina White of Darlington, and Brandon Lewis White, also of Darlington; and one great-grandchild, Christopher Dylan White.

NELL ATKINSON
Funeral services for Nell Johnson Atkinson, 73, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sept 5, 2001, at New Market United Methodist Church. Mrs. Atkinson, widow of William M. Atkinson, Sr., died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Belar C. and Geanie Caddell Johnson. She was a member of New Market United Methodist Church, the Docia Johnson Circle, Secretary of the Teenagers, and a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her sons, William M. (Bea) Atkinson, Jr., Steve Alan Atkinson, Billy Ray Atkinson, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, William M. (Rocky) Atkinson III, James Rodney Atkinson, Tina Nichole Atkinson, all of Hartsville; and one great-grandchild.
JAMES E. SAXTON
DARLINGTON – James Eugene "Jim" Saxton, 62, of Darlington died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, after an extended illness. Services were held on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m. in Central Baptist Church conducted by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Interment followed in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mr. Saxton was born
in Dover, Ohio, a son of the late Walter and Mary Hattery Saxton. He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he served as an assistant teacher to the Sue Blackmon Sunday School Class. Mr. Saxton was a member of the St. David's Masonic Lodge #72 and was a past Exalted Ruler of the Florence Elks Lodge #1020. He was a Boy Scout advocate and served as Scout Leader for Troop #508. He received the Silver Beaver Award and a Masters Degree in scouting. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. Mr. Saxton worked for several area car dealerships and retired last year.
Survivors include his wife, Linda H. Saxton of the home; one son, Ricky (Cindy) Saxton of Florence; four daughters, Deborah Smoak of Timmonsville, Tina Saxton and Laura (Ronnie) Westbrook, both of Darlington, and Tiffanie Cox of Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Bonnie (Don) Glass-Dixs, Glenda (Tommy) Tarbox, and Barbara (S.P.) Adkins, all of Florida; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

BRYAN ROGERS
SALISBURY, N.C. – Services for Bryan Jones Rogers, 83, formerly of Hartsville, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at Chestnut Level Baptist Church at Blairs, Va. Burial followed at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va., directed by Scott Funeral Home of Chatham, Va.
Mr. Rogers died Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Lutheran Home in Salisbury, N.C., after a long illness. He was a loving husband, devoted father and compassionate friend. He was born
in Dry Fork, Va., on March 30, 1918, to the late Munford and Dora Mays Rogers. He graduated from Harvard Military Academy in Chatham, Va. and attended Capital University of Ohio, before joining the United States Army. While serving as the Army Nurse Corps Training Commander in Ft. Devens, Mass., he met his wife, Natalie, an Army nurse from Bangor, Maine.
A dedicated Christian and inspirational leader, Bryan held many different jobs and received numerous awards for outstanding service. He farmed, managed an insurance agency, owned and operated restaurants, and spent 25 years as a regional manager for International Minerals and Chemicals. He also played and managed semi-pro baseball and served as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds for almost 20 years. He moved to Salisbury after spending his early retirement years in Danville, Va., Hartsville and Tampa, Fla.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years. Natalie Stevens Rogers of Trinity Oaks in Salisbury; daughters, Nora Lee Reefe and husband Ed of Boca Grande, Fla., and Linville, N.C.; Kate Smith and husband Frasier of Marietta, Ga.; Betsy Young and husband Greg, of Midlothian, Va.; and Susan Kelley and husband Randy of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Bryan Stuart Rogers of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Anna Moore of Callands, Va., and Glenn Yates of Danville, Va.; brothers, Aylor Rogers of Blairs, Va., and Lynn Rogers of Seneca, S.C.; two brothers, Fitzhugh Rogers and Orlin Rogers, and two sisters, Susie Barbee and Nellie Owen, preceded him in death. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Brooke Young Childress of Albermarle, N.C.; Dr. Donna Childress of Salisbury, N.C., Jamie Kelley of Beaufort, N.C., Bryan Kelley of Charlotte, N.C.; Katie Reefe of Worton, Md.; Bryan and Steven Rogers of Seneca, S.C.; and Taryn Smith of Marietta, Ga.; and four great-grandchildren, Gregory, Paul-Thomas, and Bryson Childress of Albermarle, N.C., and Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C.

CLINARD SCARLETT
DARLINGTON – Clinard A. Scarlett, 64, will be held at 6 p.m. today, Sept. 5, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Thomasville, N.C. Mr. Scarlett died Monday, Sept. 3, in a Florence hospital. He was born
in Denton, N.C., a son of the late Allen and Grace Grubb Scarlett. He was president of Scarlett's Limited and was a member of Family Worship Center.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Newby Scarlett of Darlington; two sons, Allen "Dickey" Scarlett and Samuel (Debra) Scarlett, both of Darlington; four grandchildren; one brother, Clyde Scarlett of Denton, N.C.; two sisters, Marie S. Harrison of Denton, N.C. and Brenda S. Keats of Samora, N.C.
Mr. Scarlett was preceded in death by a son, Timothy "Tim" Scarlett.
