LEON A. McCRAY
QUINBY – Services for Leon Alfred McCray III, 22, will be at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 12, 2001, in Savannah Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens Darlington directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. The body will lie in state at the church viewing room from 1-3 p.m. The family is receiving friends at the residence, 100 Quinby Circle, Quinby.
Mr. McCray departed this earthly life early Saturday morning, Sept. 8, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. He was born
on Jan. 7, 1979, son of Leon and Bonita McCray, grandson of the late Leon and Eleese McCray of Darlington and the late Ranta and Grace Frazier of Society Hill.
Mr. McCray attended Florence public schools and was consistently an honor student and involved in various organizations throughout his public school career. He graduated with honors from Wilson High School in 1997, having served as student body president. He also played and lettered in varsity tennis while there. He had begun his senior year of college at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla., when illness interfered. Leon was a member of Savannah Grove Baptist Church. He accepted Christ at an early age an lived a courageous and humble life. He was a kind, considerate and loving son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend to many. Leon was predeceased by his sister, Noel, in 1993.
He leaves to cherish his memories his parents and a brother, Ryan, all of Quinby; devoted aunts and uncles, Larry and Barbara Brooks of Quinby, Melvin and Brenda Poole of Rock Hill and Eleanor (Bobby) Jackson of New York; loving and devoted cousins, Alexis Brooks, Kavita Poole, Vachelle Poole and OluBayo Jackson; great aunt, Miriam Flowers of Darlington; special cousin, Quentin Goodson of Darlington and a host of other relatives and many devoted friends.
THOMASENIA WINGATE
DARLINGTON – Services for Thomasenia "Tommie" Wingate will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, in Round O Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael McMillian, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Wingate died on Friday, Sept. 7, in a local hospital. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Daniel and Annie Lee Poole. She was the widow of Jonathan Wingate. She was educated in Darlington County public schools and was a life member of Round O Baptist Church.
Survivors include five devoted daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth McCall, Ms. Carrie Wingate, Mrs. Verline Odom, all of Darlington, Mrs. Virginia (Ernest) Joint and Mrs. Mary (Percy) Whitaker, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Nathaniel (Rebecca) Goodson and John (Elouise) Cannon, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; special nephews and niece, Eddie K. Poole, Heyward Derry and Hazel Alford; several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1764 Mt. Siani Drive, Darlington.
ANNE B. GOODSON
FLORENCE – Services for Annie B. Wilson Goodson, 63, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 14, 2001, at Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church with Bishop Livingston Cannon, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Florence National Cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Goodson died Saturday, Sept. 8, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born
in Berkeley County, a daughter of the late David Wilson and Janie B. Talley Wilson Mack. She received her education in the public schools of Florence and continued it in Essex County College, N.J., receiving her licensed practical nursing degree. She worked in the healthcare field. She was a member of Wayside Baptist Church. Years later, she became a member of Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church.
Survivors include a devoted husband, Lester Goodson Jr. of the home; step-mother, Mrs. Rosa W. Black of Florence; five daughters, Ruby Brockman of Orange, N.J., Joyce (Moses A.) Fludd of Charleston, Lezlee (Ronnie) Dubose of Sanford, N.C., Regina Kirven and Hope Goodson, both of Florence; seven sons, Master Sgt. Gregory Ross Jr. of Ft. Hood, Texas, George (Teresa) Ross of Jacksonville, N.C., Anthony (Wanda) Ross of Parsippy, N.J., McKinley Ross of Newark, N.J., Robert Ross, Vance Ross, Victor (Yvette) Ross, all of Florence; eight sisters, Hattie Lee of Charleston, Marie Johnson of Winsboro, N.C., Margaret (Bill) Sheppard, Jessie (Cliff) Waiters, Mary (Harold) Brewer, Jacqueline (James) Pompey, Penny (Jordan) Hines and Cynthia Wilson, all of Florence; 29 grandchildren, one of whom she was rearing, Crystal Jane Ross; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Ernestine Goodson Hayes of Darlington, Linda Goodson of Florence; aunts, Jessie McClain of Florence and Ada Wilson of Darlington; special cousins, Margaret Brady of Bronx, N.Y., and JoAnn (Leo) Bonaparte of Darlington; other aunts, nieces, and nephews.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 824 Julip Lane, Florence.
JEANETTE MILES
LAMAR – Jeanette Miles, 56, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
RICHARD JOHNSON
Services for Richard Johnson, 60, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 14, 2001, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hamilton, officiating. Burial will be in the Westview Memorial Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson died Wednesday, Sept. 12. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late James Arthur Johnson and Laurine Byrd Johnson Atkinson. He was employed with Discount Auto Parts and was former Owner of Johnson Auto Sales. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jo Ann Hicks Johnson of Hartsville; daughter, Mrs. Tammy Gainey of Hartsville; son, Ronnie Johnson of Hartsville; sister, Mrs. Kay Heustess of Darlington; brother, Darius Johnson of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Clarissa and Brent Gainey and Jeffrey and Justin Johnson, all of Hartsville.
Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund.
JAMES KELLY
LAKE WATEREE – Memorial services for James Whit "J.W." Kelly, 62, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the Chapel of Lake Wateree Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Edward Gravely and Rev. Jeff Scott. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Masonic grave rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Children's Hospital of Palmetto Memorial Hospital or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled and Burned Children. Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro was in charge.
Mr. Kelly died Monday, Sept. 10. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Lou Ella Lloyd Kelly Criminger and the late James Edsel Kelly. He was a retired teamster, a veteran of the U.S. Army, member of the chapel of Lake Wateree Presbyterian Church, the Dentsville Masonic Lodge #398 A.F.M., a 32nd Degree Scottish Rites member, member of Jamil Shrine Temple and a member of the Teamsters Local #509.
J. W. touched many lives and left many wonderful memories for all who knew him.
Surviving are his mother, Lou Ella Criminger of Kershaw; his loving wife, Patricia "Trish" Mims Kelly of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa (Joe) Phifer of Columbia, Taffy (Mike) Hardin of Elgin and Tina (Steve) Tomlin of Gulf Breeze, Fla; son and daughter-in-law, Dan (Bess) Kelly of Columbia; grandchildren, Kelly, Kristen, Tricia, Michael, Whitney, Jim, Lauren, Whit and Stephen; sisters, Bonnie Tolson of Timmonsville, Jacqueline Young and Cathy Hearon, both of Kershaw, and brother, Craig Criminger of Killeen, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Edsel Kelly, and a brother, Richard Earl Kelly.
ALICE LEE PACE
DARLINGTON – Alice Lee Pace, 81, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at 3:30 p.m. in Grove Hill Cemetery conducted by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001.
Mrs. Pace was born
in Darlington and was the daughter of the late Les and Adlaide Haines Lee. Mrs. Pace was the widow of the late Joe Howard Pace. For many years, she was a resident of Darlington and a switchboard operator at McLeod's Hospital in Florence.
Surviving are her son, Joe Murray Pace; several grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Betty Rose Matthews of Brandon, Miss.
MATTIE HALL
McBEE – Services for Mattie Hall, 85, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Galilee Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pines Forest Memorial Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hall died Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Morrell Nursing Center after an illness. She was born
in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Maybell Jackson. She received her education in the public schools of Chesterfield County. She was a lifetime member of Galilee Baptist Church, senior choir and Missionary Society.
Surviving are a sister, Albertha Hall of McBee; a sister-in-law, Pauline Hall of McBee; an aunt, Curlee Hall of McBee; a nephew, Melvin (Elizabeth) Murphy of McBee; two nieces, Vera Ruth and Evelyn Wilson, both of McBee; a special niece, Sharon Sowell of Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
HAROLD R. HOKE
SURFSIDE BEACH – Services for Harold R. Hoke, 76, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 31, 2001, at Surfside United Methodist Churc h. Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at Catawba Memorial Park, Conover, N.C., directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Murrells Inlet, S.C.
Mr. Hoke died Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Alice Pitts Hoke; a son, Harold; a daughter, Laura Hoke Skatell; son, Ray Hoke; eight grandchildren, and a sister, Alma Setzer.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Goldfinch Funeral Home.

ROOSEVELT FOX SR.
Services for Roosevelt "Velt" Fox Sr. were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001, at St. John United Methodist Church, the Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor, with Elder Ronald Fox, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Fox died Saturday, June 29, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Ross and Mary Alice Mack Fox. He was educated in the public schools and worked as a farmer all of his life. He was married
to the late Alice Anderson.
Survivors are three sons, Roosevelt (Faye) Fox Jr. of Darlington, Ronald (Shirley) Fox of Elgin and Odell (Diane) Fox of Timmonsville; a daughter, Bertha Mae Murphy of Hartsville; three brothers, Willie (Elizabeth) Fox of Darlington, Ross (Rosa Lee) Fox of Hartsville and Frank Fox of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Sarah Bacote of Hartsville and Lizzy Wright of New York, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
