SAM HERNDON
Services for Samuel L. Herndon Jr., 75, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or an organization of your choice. Mr. Herndon died Wednesday, April 26. Born in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Samuel Leroy and Fannie Bundy Herndon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and the Old Timers Club. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company and was a graduate of Fletcher Memorial High School. He was a World War II veteran and was a volunteer with both the Blood Mobile and Meals on Wheels. Surviving are his wife, Louise Eddins Herndon of Hartsville; two sons, Samuel L. (Alice) Herndon, III of Atlanta, GA and Dr. Donald L. (Patty) Herndon of Greenville; two sisters, Doris Usher and Aileen Long, both of Bennettsville; and three grandchildren, Adam Herndon, Cari Herndon and Wesley Herndon. He was predeceased by sisters, Geneva Herndon and Louise Young.
MIRIAM WADSWORTH
Graveside services for Miriam Lena Wadsworth, 76, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Cline and Rev. Charles Roberts, officiating. Miss Wadsworth died April 25. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late W. Carl and Ethel Lee Wadsworth. She was a member of First Baptist Church, WOW, Eastern Star, Telephone Pioneers and was retired from from Southern Bell. Surviving are one brother, Richard Wadsworth; one sister, Margaret W. Galloway, both of Hartsville; three nieces, Patricia McCoy of McBee, Rebecca Walker and Donna Wadsworth, both of Hartsville; one nephew, Harvey Galloway of Columbia; three great nieces and three great nephews. PERRY JOHNSON
Services for Perry Johnson, 86, will be held at 2 pm. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Perry Lloyd will officiate with burial in Westview Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Johnson died Wednesday, April 26. Born in Chesterfield County, he was the son of the late May and Katie Morrison Johnson. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, retired from Daniel Construction, and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Walters Johnson of Hartsville; son, Larry A. Johnson; two daughters, Betty Nagel and Glory Huckabee, all of Hartsville; a brother, Troy Johnson of Hartsville; sisters, Alice Burns of Hartsville, Bertie Howell of St. Augustine, Fla., Mildred Collins of Winnsboro; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
FRANCIS P. BYRD
Services for Francis P. Byrd, 80, of Society Hill, were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Byrd died early Sunday morning, April 30, at his home near Society Hill after a long struggle with emphysema. He was born
Aug. 10, 1919 and was a tobacco farmer near the Patrick-Society Hill area. was married
to Hazel Deyo Culpepper on Dec. 12, 1942, and she survives him. In the community he served on the Harris Creek School Board, the Chesterfield County ASC County Committee and the Chesterfield County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. A lifelong member of Mt. Olviet Baptist Church, he served on the Board of Deacons, as superintendent of Sunday School and on numerous committees over the years. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents, George Lucas Byrd and Mary Musgrove (Mamie) Farr; brothers, Lucas Etheride (Geneva Clark, William Oatzel (Elizabeth Winburn) and Harvey Hoke (Lola Mae Dixon); and sister, Helen Wynoon; three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephew survive him; and a daughter, Sandra Merle Byrd, 16, died in 1963, of complications due to cerebral palsy. Survivors are seven children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Vivan A. Byrd, 56, and special friend, Darrell Chambers of Ann Arbor, MI and her children, Jonathan D. Schwartz, of Orlando Fla. and Michael (wife, Puri-Yu) Schwartz of Chicago, Ill; Francis Stanley Byrd, 54, and special friend, Mardy Jackson of Society Hill; his son, Matthew Stanley Byrd of Columbia; Lee Odell Byrd, 53, wife, Annette Snipes Byrd of Florence and their children, Crystel Leigh of Florence and Christopher Lee (wife, Elizabeth, sons, Brandon and Jonah) of Surfside Beach; Sharon Byrd Laureti, 47, of Shelton, Conn. and her children, David Bradley and Jessica Margaret of New York, N.Y.; Katen Byrd Mitchell, 47, husband David Mitchell and their son, Brian Mitchell of Morton, Pa.; Orinda J. Christoph, 45, husband, Richard Thomas Christoph and their children, George Andrew and Erica McKay, of Madison, South Dakota.

in Darlington County, a son of the late Jessie & Dessie Windham Spires. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 42 years of service, member of the Old Timers Club, Emmanuel Baptist Church, The Living Hope Sunday School Class and a veteran of WWII. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Jones Spires of Hartsville; two sons, William Eugene (Billy) Spires of Hartsville and Lester Lee Spires of McBee; one brother, Heyward Spires of Sumter; three sisters, Mrs. Lynn Newsome, Mrs. Evelyn Talbert and Mrs. Billie Hemingway, all of Hartsville; and four grandchildren. Services for Ethel Bulls Campbell, 90, were held at 3 p. m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mrs. Campbell died Thursday, April 27, in Carolina Pines Medical Center after an illness. She was born
Sept. 22, 1909 in Darlington County, was the daughter of the late Early and Theo Williams Bulls. She was educated in Darlington County public school and was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church, the Senior Choir, Missionary Society and the Mother Board. Surviving are three daughters, Susie (Eddie) Thompson, Ethelene Edward and Christine Dickson, all of Hartsville; three sons, Willie James Campbell and Bobby (Barbara) Campbell, both of Hartsville and Dr. Guy (Dorothy) Campbell, Jr. of Moorestown, N.J.; three sisters, Lucille Myers of Hartsville, Sadie Marcus of Williamston, N.C. and Annie McFadden of Willington, N.C.; a brother, Jack (Lillie Mae) Lunn of Darlington; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
WILLIE MAE HUGGINS
Services for Willie Mae Grant Huggins, 56, were held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. Mrs. Huggins died Thursday, April 27. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Willie Beasley and Ruth Crowley Grant. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and attended St. Luke United Methodist Church. She was a teacher at Washington Street Elementary and West Hartsville Elementary Schools. She received her B.A. from Coker College and her M. Ed from the University of South Carolina. Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Huggins of Hartsville; a son, Tony Huggins of Charleston; daughter, Maria (Tom) McTighe of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, William Grant of Hartsville; sisters, Gloria Bulmer of Newport News, Va., Patty Holley of Hartsville; granddaughters, Cecila Mae McTighe, Ruthie Mary McTighe and Clare Aurelia McTighe.
HERMAN DIXON
Services for Herman Dixon, 68, of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, formerly of Hartsville, were held at St. James AME Church, New York and Arctic Avenues, Atlantic City, N.J. on April 28, 2000. He was the son of the late Miss Ruby Robinson and Mr. Nathan Dixon and a former employee at Sonoco. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on Oct. 19, 1954, receiving the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. Surviving are his wife Hannah Dixon, formerly of Darlington, son, Vernard (Mary) Dixon, of Hartsville; a daughter, the late Mrs. Janie Mae (Sam) Dickson. One surviving sister, Ethel Mitchell of Hartsville; a deceased sister and brother; three grandsons and one grand-daughter; six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other close relatives and friends. Services for Hazel Clark King, 83, were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Kinlaw Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Elliott officiating. Private graveside services were held in Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville. Mrs. King died Sunday, April 30, at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.
