CATHERINE B. McALISTER
Services for Catherine Baxley McAlister, 81, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial was in Westview Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. McAlister was born
in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late Charlie Baxley and Gertrude Britton Baxley Conlon. She was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, William C. McAlister of Hartsville; three daughters, Nancy Kinlaw of Beaufort, Carolyn Fletcher of Raleigh, N.C., and Margie McAteer of Ellijay, Ga.; a brother, Rubin Baxley of Los Angeles, Calif.; half-brother, John Conlon of Charleston; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee.
CAROLYN BELL
Funeral services for Carolyn Bell, 78, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bev Kennedy and the Rev. Tim Tomlinson will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at her former residence near Lydia, 4338 Una Road. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Ms. Bell died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Elise Parham Bell. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher of the Gleaners Class for many years. She was a graduate of Coker College and was employed with The Kerfoots as a decorator for over 30 years.
Surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Frances Bell of Summerton, S.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Donald Clark of Montgomery, Ala.; nieces and nephews, Donald Bell Clark of Hartsville, Carol Clark Pocock of Charleston, Fran Bell Green of Pawleys Island, Mandy McGee of Simpsonville, Martha Reynolds of Andrews, John Ducworth, Anne Davis Darby, William Bell Davis, Sara Rebecca Davis, Lynn Davis Weese, Robert Hepburn Davis, all of Summerton, S.C.; several great-nieces and nephews.
ELIZABETH COVINGTON
FLORENCE – Services for Elizabeth Smith Covington, 97, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 17, 2001, in the chapel of the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, Twin Church Road, Florence. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in Hebron Cemetery near Clio. Friends may call at the home of Anna Hazel Wilson, 516 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, or the home of Carlisle T. Smith, 204 Katherine St., Bennettsville. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 300 Society St., Clio, C.S. 29525. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home of Bennettsville is in charge.
Mrs. Covington, widow of the late Thomas Gibson Covington, died Sunday, Oct. 14. Born in Clio, she was a daughter of the late William Charles and Bessie Traywick Smith. She attended Columbia College and taught school for many years in Hartsville and Wallace, N.C. She retired from Florida Southern College, Lakeland, Fla. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the D.A.R. She was an initial resident of the Methodist Manor of Florence.
She was the beloved sister of Anna Hazel Wilson of Hartsville, and brother, Carlisle T. Smith of Bennettsville, and a nephew, nieces and their families.
FRED SELBY
Memorial services for Fred M. Selby Jr., 52, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charles McLendon officiated. Mr. Selby died Sunday, Oct. 14. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Fred M. and Margaret Moore Selby Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from the S.C. National Guard.
Surviving are his wife, Sherry Rowe Selby of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin (Angela) Selby of Myrtle Beach; daughter and son-in-law, Karen S. and David Clemson of Hartsville; brother and sister-in-law, Terry (Sandra) Whitehead of Anderson; sister and brother-in-law, Libby S. (Charlie) Schmitz of Hartsville.
JAMES E. THOMPSON
BETHUNE – Services for James E. Thompson Sr., 78, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 17, 2001, at Bethune Church of God with the Rev. Robert Winburn officiating. Burial will be in the Wateree Baptist Church Cemetery in Camden, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.
Mr. Thompson died Oct. 15, 2001. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Luke and Erie Watkins Thompson. He was a member of the Bethune Church of God and was retired from Kendall Mills.
Surviving are his wife; Frances Reich Brown Thompson of Bethune; sons, James (Buddy) Thompson Jr. of Cassatt and Larry Thompson of Camden; daughters, Evelyn McCaskill and Nancy Stephens, both of Cassatt, and Carolyn Thompson of Bethune; brother, Luke Thompson of Cassatt; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Thompson, and a son, Kenny Brown.
DOROTHY SHANNON
McBEE – Dorothy Shannon, 62, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2001, at her residence. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
ALVIN HOUGH
NORWALK, Conn. – A memorial service for Alvin Hough, 64, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hartsville. Downer Funeral Home, Inc. of Norwalk, Conn., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hough, a Norwalk resident for over 25 years, died Friday, Oct. 12, at Mediplex in Darien. Born on June 25, 1937, in McBee, he was the son of Mrs. Ann Hough-Hooten of McBee and the late Jesse Hough. He worked as a brick mason for Ben Hogan Co. in Lancaster, Pa., for many years.
In addition to his mother, other survivors include four sisters, Jessie Clemens of Lincoln University, Pa., Linda Warner of Mt. Joy, Pa., Phyllis Fields of Hartsville, and Eunice Lorick of Blythewood, S.C.
MARY A. McCLAIN
LAMAR – Services for Mary Alice Shaw McClain were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnny Coe officiating. Burial followed in the Plaza Memorial Gardens in Lamar. Professional services were provided by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mrs. McClain died Friday, Oct. 12, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. She was born
in the Lamar community, a daughter of the late Murray Shaw Sr. and Margaret Sowells Shaw. She attended the public schools of Darlington County, graduating from Spaulding High School with the Class of 1981. She was married
to Patrick McClain Sr., and this union was blessed with two children. She was employed with the Days Inn Motel chain and was a member of Mary Magdalene Freewill Baptist Church. A brother, Sammie Lee McCullough, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Patrick McClain Sr. of the home; a son, Patrick Terrell McClain Jr., and a daughter, Michelle Antoinette McClain, both of the home; six brothers, James McCullough and Vestine (Eleanor) McCullough, both of Baltimore, Md., Moses (Margie) Shaw of Lamar, William (Vicky) Shaw of Hartsville, Benjamin Shaw and Murray Shaw Jr. both of Patterson, N.J.; 10 sisters, Addie Mae McCullough of Hartsville, Sallie Anderson and Emma Jane McCullough, both of Baltimore, Md., Lou Ella Wilson of Sumter, Elizabeth (Jimmie) Garner of Lamar, Barbara Ann Shaw of Darlington, Joanna (Johnnie) Coe of Florence, Patsy (Isaiah) Benjamin and Mary Shaw, both of Patterson, N.J., and Jerline Troutman of Plainfield, N.J.; father-in-law, Thomas McClain, and mother-in-law, Vermell McClain, both of Lamar.
WILLIAM HUGGINS SR.
Services for William Paul Huggins Sr., 60, were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Gardner, officiating.
Mr. Huggins died Friday, Oct. 12. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Manuel and Elizabeth Howle Huggins and was a retired truck driver.
Surviving are three daughters, Susan Davis of Bishopville, Tresa Bullard and Jennifer Engleburt, both of Hartsville; two sons, William Paul Huggins Jr. of Conway and Michael L. Huggins of Aynor; a brother, John Roy Huggins of Hartsville; a sister, Ruth Shelton of Missouri and seven grandchildren.
EFFIE AMERSON
Graveside services for Effie Amerson, 79, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Newman Swamp Methodist Church Cemetery in Lamar directed by Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Roger Hurd will officiate. Visitation will be this evening, Wednesday, from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.
Miss Amerson died Monday, Oct. 15. She was born
in Lee County, a daughter of the late James Madison and Hattie Register Amerson. She was a member of the Wayside Baptist Church.
Surviving are nephew, Rick Galloway of Darlington, and other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth McCoy, Thelma Hudson, Kate Galloway and Edna Register and seven brothers, Cecil, Boyd, Bob, Roy, Alvin, Otis and Ray Amerson.
