Services for Vermelle Gainey Johnson, 96, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim Tomlinson officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson, widow of Heyward Huggins, Gurtha Gardner and W. D. Johnson, died Friday, June 23. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Early F. and Annie Chapman Gainey. She was the oldest member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and was manager of the Rainbow Drive-In for many years. Surviving are her son, Marion Laverne Huggins of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Mildred Miller of Hartsville; brother, William O. Gainey of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Clara Matheson of Cheraw; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
HELENA S. SYLVESTER
Services for Helena Smith Sylvester, formerly of Darlington County, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2000, in Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Sylvester died Tuesday, June 20, in a Virginia nursing home after an extended illness. She was born
in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Verley Clark Smith. She was educated in the Chesterfield and Darlington County public schools, graduating from Butler High School Class of 1944. She graduated from South Carolina State in 1948 with a degree in elementary education. She taught school in South Carolina, Connecticut and New York. She married
George Sylvester in 1960. She was a member of Mt. Elon United Methodist Church of Angelus in Chesterfield County, before moving to Hartsville and joining Centenary United Methodist Church. Survivors are her husband, George Sylvester of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Jessie Lee Boyd of Alexandra, Va.; a brother, John Brown of Hartsville; three nieces, Dalphine Smith and Ann Roden, both of Queens, N.Y., and Audrey Smith Redd of Dumfries, Va.; a nephew, Bernard Sylvester of Houston, Texas; god sons, Rondell and Randell Bulls of Waterbury, Conn.; and step-mother, Esther B. Huntley of Pageland.
ARNOLD BRYANT
Services for William Arnold Bryant, 67, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tim Tomlinson and Paul Sullivan officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church. Mr. Bryant died Saturday, June 24. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late W. Coyt and Jessie Lee Osborne Bryant. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and the Lions Club. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 35 years of service and was a member of the Old Timer’s Club. He was a past board member of Thomas Hart Academy. Surviving are his daughters, Margaret Olivia Bryant of Goose Creek; Lee Ann and Scotty Talbert of Hartsville, Julie and Allan King of Hartsville; grandchildren, Laruren King and Bryce King; aunt and uncle, Margaret and Roy McCall of Society Hill.
WENDALL BROWN
Services for Wendall Brown Sr., 33, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 2000, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Anderson and the Rev. Hazel Mixon, officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery. Mr. Brown was born
in Darlington County, a son of Marion Leon and Linda Perdue Brown. He was employed with Flowers Sheet Rock. Surviving are his parents of Hartsville; one son, Marion Wendall Brown Jr. of Hartsville; three brothers, Ricky Brown of Lancaster, Steven Brown and Rodney Brown, both of Hartsville.
HESTER T. TAYLOR
Services for Mrs. Hester Thomas Taylor were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Round O’ Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael McMillian, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington. Mrs. Taylor died Friday, June 23, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of Azalee Thomas and the late John Smith. She was a 1944 graduate of Rosenwald High School, Society Hill. She was a member of Round O’ Baptist Church and was a former employee of Clanton’s Auto Sales. Survivors include her mother, Ms. Azalee Thomas of Darlington; her husband, Charlie Taylor of the home; two children, Ms. Cindy Taylor of Darlington and Charlie Lorenzo Taylor of the home; three grandchildren, Torrie, Brittany and Ebony; two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie (Walter) Williamson and Patricia Thomas, both of Darlington; and three children she reared as her own, Katrina Thomas Dunham, Dremeca Thomas and Robert DeWayne Thomas, all of Darlington.
ALPHONSO ENGLISH
Graveside services for Alphonzo James English were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, June 22, 2000, in the U.S. National Cemetery in Florence, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington. Mr. English, 80, died Sunday, June 18, in a York, Pa., hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington, the youngest son of the late Boykin and Eliza Dial English. He attended Darlington area schools and later attended a technical college in Chicago, majoring in auto mechanics. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought the battles of Normandy, Northern Frances and the Rhineland of Germany. He lived for many years in Chicago. He moved back to Darlington for five years, then moved to York, Pa., and lived there for approximately 25 years. While in York, he was employed by Union Paper Co. of which he retired. He was predeceased by his siblings, Mrs. Ernestine English Mance, Boykin English Jr. and Booker T. English. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sawn of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren, nine nieces and nephews, Kenneth (Georgia) Mance of Alcolu.
HELEN GOODSON
Services for Helen Sumner Goodson, 78, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Robert Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8, at the residence, 316 W. Home Ave. Memorials may be made to Thomas E. and Pearl S. Goodson Music Scholarship at Coker College or to a charity of one’s choice. Miss Goodson died Monday, June 26. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Edward and Pearl Sumner Goodson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a faithful member of the choir for over 50 years. She graduated from Hartsville High School and attended Anderson College, Winthrop College and Coker College, pursuing a degree in public school music. She was associated with the Hartsville Credit Bureau, Pee Dee Horse & Mule Company and Byerly Hospital. She was involved in the music program at Coker College, being a member of the Founders Society and of the U.D.C. Surviving are her cousins; a devoted friend, Linda Brooks of Hartsville. She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas E. Goodson Jr., and a sister, Margaret S. Goodson.
MILDRED T. BUTLER
CHESTERFIELD – Services for Mildred Thompson Butler, 87, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw.
Mrs. Butler died Tuesday, Oct. 23. She was born
in Bennettsville, a daughter of the late David Bennett and Carrie Riddle Thompson. She was a retired employee of Cheraw Yarn Mills and attended Eastside Holiness Church in Hartsville. She was married
to the late Henry Morrison Butler and was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Butler, a grandson, David Butler, and her brother, Bennett Thompson.
Survivors include three sons, Julius T. "Teddy" Butler and Homer R. Butler of Chesterfield and John Wayne Butler of Hartsville; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
RICKEY GEORGE
Services for Rickey George, 38, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Tabernacle Holiness Church in Darlington. Burial was in Florence National Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. George died Monday, Oct. 22, at a VA Medical Center in Columbia after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County, a son of the late Joe and Lillie Bell Coleman George Sr. He received his education at Rosenwald High School and graduated valedictorian with the class of 1981. He retired from the U.S. Army.
Surviving are two sisters, Pastor Janie (Jerome) Wilds, Eldress Barbara (Elder Bruce) Johnson, both of Darlington; four brothers, Edward "Spider" (Minister Brenda) George, Jerome (Evangelist Mary) George, William (Mary) George, and Wallace George, all of Darlington; 15 aunts, 14 uncles; nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

Services for Anthony Rudolph Floyd Sr., 80, were held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Ravenwood Baptist Church, Columbia with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Floyd died Tuesday, Oct. 23. He was married
for 58 years to the late Myrtis Hutto Floyd of Blackville. Born in Conway, he was a son of the late William Harvey and Flora B. Richardson Floyd Sr. He enjoyed a more than 30 year career in the furniture industry with Maxwell Brothers Stores and Heilig-Meyers. He was a member and deacon at Ravenwood Baptist Church and was an accomplished craftsman and woodworker.
Surviving are his two sons and daughter-in-law, Anthony R. and Jacquelyn Hoffman Floyd Jr. of Hartsville, Daniel Floyd of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers, the Rev. Herbert Floyd and the Rev. Hubert Floyd; two sisters, Bernice Floyd Darnell and Margaret Floyd Thomas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, the Rev. William Harvey Floyd Jr.
