LUCILLE R. REYNOLDS
Services for Lucille Register Reynolds, 83, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the House of Prayer Holiness Church with the Rev. Billy L. Melton officiating. Burial was in the Wayside Baptist Church Cemetery, near Bishopville, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.
Mrs. Reynolds, widow of Fred Reynolds, died Wednesday, Nov. 21. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Samuel and Modena Smith Register. She attended the House of Prayer Holiness Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Gail Beasley of Hartsville; two sons, Coyt Reynolds of Hartsville and S. A. Reynolds of Lamar; a sister, Rudell Beasley of Hartsville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian McKenzie, and a son, Don Reynolds.

RENA FAYE PROCTOR
BLACKSHEAR, Ga. – Services for Rena Faye Courson Proctor, 70, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, At Emmanuel Baptist Church of Blackshear, Ga., with Dr. Don Hattaway and the Rev. Glenn Lindsey officiating. Interment was in Blackshear Cemetery directed by Pearson-Treadwell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Proctor passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 22, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center following a long illness. A native of Brantley County, she lived in Pierce County for most of her life. She worked as an operating room technician and as a sitter in the health care industry for many years. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she was in the Ladies' Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, the VFW Women's Auxiliary and the Blackshear Order of the Eastern Star. She was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Versie Jacobs Courson and was also preceded in death by her husband, Dudley Proctor, who passed away in 1995.
Surviving are a daughter, Ms. Janelle Hickox of Blackshear; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry (Susan) Sloan of Blackshear and Jim (Marion) Sloan of Hartsville; a step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Rhonda (Chris) Scarbin of Waycross; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie (Florence) Courson of Blackshear; eight grandchildren, Michael Hickox, Mark Hickox, Mandy Sloan, Capericia Black, Jerry Sloan II, Tommy Sloan, Sissy Whittington and Arcia Dayden; five great-grandchildren and several other relatives.

STERLING L. SMITH
LEXINGTON, N.C. – Services for Sterling Lee Smith, 72, will be held today, Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Lindsley officiating. Burial will follow in Jersey Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Davidson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Sterling L. Smith Scholarship Fund c/o Foundation Scholarship Program, P. O. Box 1465, Taylors, S.C. 29687.
Mr. Smith died Sunday Nov. 26, 2001, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born Oct. 12, 1929, in Winston Salem to Grady Lee Smith and Annis Feezor Smith. He spent his early childhood in Davidson County and returned in 1997 to retire on the Feezor Farm. Mr. Smith was the driving force behind the development of the South Carolina Higher Education Tuition Grants program and retired as executive vice president of the South Carolina Independent College Association.
From a modest $5, 000 per year beginning as a scholarship fund for students attending private colleges, Smith led the expansion of the program until more than $18 million per year was made available for scholarships which were received by some 80, 000 students.
Upon his retirement, Gov. David Beasley presented Mr. Smith with the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina's highest civilian award. The S. C. Financial Aide Association selected him as Man of the Year in 1977.
Mr. Smith also was involved in government relation's work for a number of other clients. He represented The Tobacco Institute, General Foods Corp, R. J. Reynolds and the Personal Watercraft Association. He was a graduate of the city schools of Winston Salem and received his AB from Duke University. At Duke he participated in baseball and football, and was sports editor of the Duke newspaper and the campus radio station.
Mr. Smith later attended graduate school at Wake Forest University and served in the U. S. Army where he was editor of the Fort Jackson, S.C. newspaper. He was a member of the Sapona Country Club, The Summit Club, the American Legion. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville, SC.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Bickett Smith of the home; daughters, Karen Smith Sparrow of Zebulon, N.C., and Susan Musser of Columbia; step-son, Greg Bickett of Columbia; step-daughter, Jamie Plachy of Asheville, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

ANTOINETTE D. WILKINS
Services for Antoinette D. Wilkins, 41, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Kingsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Hollimon officiating. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery with professional services entrusted to Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wilkins was born Aug. 26, 1960, in Philadelphia, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Harrison and Ola Mae Robinson Dixon. She moved to Oakland, California at an early age where she attended the public schools before moving to South Carolina. She continued her education in the Darlington County public schools, graduating from Butler High School with the Class of 1978. After graduation, she continued her education by attending Johnson C. Smith University, where she graduated with high honors with the Class of 1982. She was married to Billy Wilkins and this union was blessed with one son, Dominque Wilkins. Mrs. Wilkins was a hard working person, and that was displayed by her participation with the high school and college basketball teams. While in college she also pledged and was accepted into the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was a member of Kingsville United Methodist Church where she served as finance secretary, a member of the Young Adult Choir and the Children's Minister during worship service. She had 17 years of dedicated employment with A. O. Smith Co. of McBee.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Wilkins of the home; one son, Dominque Wilkins of the home; one sister, Carolina Dixon of Columbia; one nephew, Clastimile Dixon of Hartsville; several close relatives and very dear friends.

HASKEL BEST SR.
LAMAR – Services for Haskel "Dewey" Best Sr. were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at the John Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Plaza Memorial Gardens of Lamar, with arrangements entrusted to Hines Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mr. Best was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Limus and Eliza Janes Pearce Best. He was educated in the public schools and worked with his family in the farming community during his early life. He was married at a young age to the late Eula Mae Samuel and this union was blessed with 12 children, nine of whom survive him. Being the hard working provider that he was, he first farmed the fields of Darlington County to take care of his family. As the life of the farmer became more unstable for the share cropper, he found work with the Darlington County School System as a janitor at Butler High School in Hartsville. He was later employed with the Egg and I commercial farms of Lamar as a truck driver. He also worked for a period of time with the Darlington Oil Mill, and finally with the Roller Bearing Company until his retirement.
Having been raised in a Christian home, he demonstrated his early training throughout his life, especially in the raising of his children and the management of his home. He praised his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through faithful worship and service to the beloved John Wesley United Methodist Church. His faithful service included sharing his gifts, time and talents in many ways, most especially as an usher of many years. He was also an upstanding member of his community with a spirit and attitude to help his fellow man. He was also a member of the David Temple Masonic Lodge #45 of Lamar.
He is survived by four sons, Haskel (Delores) Bess Jr. and Donnie Bess, both of Lamar and Robert L. (Sandra) Bess and Larry (Gwendolyn) Bess, both of Darlington; five daughters, Margaret (Henry) Williams, Mary Jane Goodson, both of Lamar, and Judy (Chris) Coleman, Eliza (Robert) McClain and Delores (Dwayne) Dials, all of Darlington; one sister, Lettie Boston of Lamar; 38 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and a host of other very close relatives and very dear friends.

SYLVIA V. STEVENSON
Mrs. Sylvia V. Stevenson, wife of Ronnie Stevenson, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Grooms of 1706 Blanding Drive.

MARION O. YARBOROUGH
LAKE CITY – Services for Marion O. Yarborough, 63, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in the Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in the Lake City Memorial Park directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Organ Procurement Agency, (SCOPA), 1064 Gardner Road, Suite 105, Charleston, SC 29407.
Mr. Yarborough died Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Lake City hospital after an illness. He was born in Lake City, a son of Myrtle Kirby Yarborough and the late Raleigh O. Yarborough. He was the owner of Yarborough Auto Mart of Lake City and he attended Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a Master Mason, Lake City Lodge #193, and retired from the South Carolina National Guard after 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Meri Hancock Yarborough of Lake City; two daughters, Cindy Middleton of Florence and Sherry West of Hartsville; one son, Marion O. Yarborough Jr. of Charleston; his mother, Myrtle K. Yarborough of Lake City; two sisters, Betty Timmons of Kingstree and Ann Evans of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren, Dan Middleton of Greenville, Barbara Middleton of Lynchburg, Va., Clay Poston of Lake City and Croxton West of Hartsville.

ANNIE MAE WATKINS
Services for Annie Mae Johnson Watkins, 83, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at the Clyde Church of God. The Revs. Don Childers, I. J. Strickland, Fred Hudson and Wallace Strickland officiated. Burial was in the Union Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Watkins, widow of Marion D. Watkins Sr., died Nov. 23. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Murray and Comella Hall Johnson. She was a member of the Clyde Chruch of God where she was active in many aspects of church work. She retired from Georgia Pacific (formerly Dixie Cup) in 1980 after 32 years of service. Her hobbies were quilting and working in her yards, especially with flowers.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jeanette (Doc) Gainey Jr. and Mrs. Vera Mae Kelly, both of Hartsville; one son, Marion D. Watkins Jr. of Hartsville; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Huggins and Mrs. Betty Hewitt of Hartsville and Mrs. Marie Engel of Orange, Va.; one brother, Murray J. Johnson of Hartsville; seven grandchildren, Vickie K. Lucas, Russell Gainey, Christy K.Woods, Lisa G. Easterling, Steve Gainey and Mica W.Saxton, all of Hartsville, and Marlo W. Hughey of James Island; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Carl W. Watkins, and two brothers, Corbett and James L. Johnson.

LILLIAN B. GOODSON
DARLINGTON – Graveside services for Lillian Blackman Goodson will be held 3 p.m. today, Nov. 28, 2001, in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funereal Home and officiated by Dr. Kenneth B. Sandifer, Dr. Olin M. Whitener and Renny Johnson.
Mrs. Goodson died Tuesday, Nov. 27, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Calvin and Sue Odom Blackman. She was married to Thomas W. Goodson and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on Oct. 18.
Mrs. Goodson attended Darlington County schools and grew up in the Indian Branch community. She worked at American Can Company for many years until her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she attended the Ruth Sunday School class and was a circle member for many years until her health declined. Mrs. Goodson was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother to her family.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas W. Goodson, and daughter, Pollie Goodson Bristow (William Jr.) of Darlington; grandchildren, Susan B. Flowers (Damon), Elizabeth B. Richards (Lee) and Katherine B. Fanning (Lofton Jr.); great-grandchildren, Damon Steger Flowers Jr., Susanna Stuart Flowers, Mary Palmer Richards, Carolina Gardiner Richards, William Hazle Bristow Richards, Charles Thomas Richards and Elizabeth Dryden Richards.

MARY BRANDIN
DARLINGTON – Services for Mary George Foreman Brandin, 69, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Rome Memorial Park in Rome, Ga., directed by Henderson and Sons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Mrs. Brandin, wife of Clifford Lavan Brandin, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Gadsden, Ala., and was the daughter of the late George Robert and Ethel Lassiter Foreman. She was a housewife and was Methodist by faith. Mrs. Brandin was also the secretary-treasurer of the Southeastern Bluegrass Association.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home is a son; Terry (Susan) Brandin of Rome, Ga.; two daughters, Madru Brandin of Timmonsville and Mrs. Keith (Kathy) Rushing of Evergreen; four grandchildren, Chastity Bray of Rome, Ga., Brittney and Patrick Brandin, both of Rome, Ga., and Nikki Watford of Darlington; a sister, Clevedale (L.M.) Teele of Gadsden, Ala., and two brothers, Robert (Evelyn) Foreman and Jerry (Frances) Foreman, both of Albertville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Brandin was preceded in death by a sister, Madru Burgress.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.
