Chaplain Robert J. Wood
STATESBORO -- Col. Robert Jerome Wood, a retired U.S. Army chaplain, 81, died Jan. 6 at home under care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.
He was born in Holyoke, Maine, and was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1944 in the Diocese of Hartford, Conn. He served 23 years as an Army chaplain, with a tour in the Korean conflict and two tours in the Vietnam War.
His service decorations included the Legion of Merit (second oak leaf cluster), Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medal. Upon retirement in 1973, he moved to Statesboro.
SURVIVORS: a nephew and niece-in-law, Robert E. Osgood Ill and Andrea Osgood of Statesboro; a great-niece, Blair C. Osgood of Statesboro; and a cousin, John Wood of Connecticut.
FUNERAL MASS: 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, burial in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors.

Adrian J. Henderson
Adrian Jackson Henderson, 74, died Jan. 6 at the home of a daughter.
He was born in Dresden, Tenn., and was the widower of Frances Ford Henderson. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.
He was a retired housing referral officer of the Civil Service Administration. He was a member of First Southern Methodist Church, formerly served as treasurer and was an honorary member of the "Crafty Ladies Group" and a member of the Building and Grounds Committee.
SURVIVORS: three daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy and Timothy S. Furlong, of Savannah, and Tina Jackson and Melinda Daniels, both of Atlanta; seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

GLENWOOD -- Jerry Thomas Coleman, 47, died Jan. 6 at Wheeler County Hospital.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Wheeler County. He was a medically retired truck driver. He was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Dianne Coleman of Glenwood; four daughters, Jennifer Solomon of Vidalia, Tabatha Meeks of Collins, and Jenna and Crystal Carter, both of Hazlehurst; two sons, Michael and Justin Meeks, both of Collins; his mother, Rudene A. Coleman of Glenwood; two brothers, Grady Coleman of Dublin and Donny Coleman of Vidalia; and two grandchildren, Tyler and Daytona Solomon, both of Vidalia.

Martha G. Hill
BRUNSWICK -- Martha Grayson Hill, 81, died Dec. 21, 1999, at home.
She was born in Savannah. She was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah and Altama Presbyterian Church in Brunswick. She was a homemaker.
SURVIVORS: two sons, Frank R. Hill III, of Savannah, and David L. Hill of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; four daughters, Rhetta H. Sutton of Woodbine, Martha H. Lawson, Holly H. Owens and Randhi H. Daniel, all of Brunswick; a sister, Henrietta G. Knox of Marietta; 19 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Peter Athas
Peter Athas, 80, died Jan. 7 at Memorial Health University Medical Center.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Savannah. He was an Army veteran, having served in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was a manager with Electronic Wholesalers Inc. (formerly Southeastern Radio Parts Inc.) and a former member of the Sertoma Club.
SURVIVORS: a sister, Mary A. Smith of Atlanta; and a nephew, Myles W. Berman of Atlanta.

Annie Lou Jacobs-Johnson
ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. -- Mrs. Annie Lou Jacobs-Johnson, 55, died Jan. 4 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Bartow, Fla., and attended the Beaufort County school system. She was employed by the Hyatt Regency of Hilton Head Island for many years before going into private housekeeping. She was an ordained prophet.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Nathaniel Johnson Sr. of St. Helena Island; four daughters, Katrina Dumas of Beaufort, Sara Grant, Wendy Daise and Alice Johnson, all of St. Helena Island; a son, Nathaniel Johnson of St. Helena Island; three sisters, Claudia Singleton of Burton, Margret Poston of St. Helena Island and Shireleen Starcia of Beaufort; four brothers, Willie Jacobs and Clarence Johnson, both of Burton, Herbert Jacobs of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Daniel Jacobs of Morena Valley, Calif.

Robert J. Bryant
BLUFFTON -- Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Robert J. Bryant, 79, of Sun City died Jan. 2 at home.
He was born in Duluth, Minn., and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Thunderbolt Club and served in the Navy Reserves as a C-1 educator. While he lived in Paramus, N.J., he finished his services as a U.S. postal carrier. He moved to Sun City three and a years ago and was a member of Palmetto Bluff Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Marie Licata Bryant of Sun City; a daughter, Rosemary B. Cocuzza of Bluffton; a sister, Betty Lou Mingus of Minnesota; and three grandchildren.

SOPERTON -- Mrs. Essie Merle Beasley, 88, died Jan. 6.
She was born in Treutlen County and was the widow of Dalton Beasley. She was of the Holiness faith.
SURVIVORS: three daughters and two sons-in-law, Christine Wilkes of Soperton, Vonnelle and Frank Brantley of Eatonton and Carolyn and Elmer Phillips of Statesboro; a brother, N.W. Barwick of Fort Meade, Fla.; two stepbrothers, Ellie Hadden of Soperton and Dan Hadden of Macon; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Jessie B. Brown, 69, died Jan. 6 at Candler Hospital.
She was born in Louisville and lived in Savannah for 45 years. She was a member of Thankful Baptist Church, where she served on the Pastor Aide Board.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Freddie Mobley of Savannah; two daughters, Connie Bright and Barbara Pollard, both of Savannah; a son, James E. Brown of Savannah; two sisters, Margaret Black and Mary Brazil, both of Miami; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Pierce County and had lived most of her life in Pierce County. She was a homemaker and member of Bristol Baptist Church.

HARDEEVILLE -- Nora M. Jenkins, 77, died Jan. 5 at Lowcountry General Hospital.
She was born in Berkley County and was a housewife and member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.

WALTERBORO -- E. Ellsworth Linder, 72, died Jan. 7 at Medical University Hospital in Charleston.
He was born in Colleton County. He was a member of St. Judes Episcopal Church and a current member of the Vestry. He was a member of Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Colleton County Memorial Library. He was a retired salesman with Coastal Institutional Food Distributors.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Elizabeth Marvin Linder of Walterboro; a son, Richard Edwin Linder of Walterboro; a daughter, Edith Ann Reed of Ridgeland; two stepsons, Dr. W. Walter Haynes of Walterboro and Poyas M. Haynes of Summerville; three stepdaughters, Emmie H. LaFitte and Kaffie H. Campbell, both of Columbia, and Betsy H. Winchip of Mount Pleasant; and 10 grandchildren.

Richard D. Lorbach
HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Richard D. Lorbach of TidePointe, 85, died Jan. 6 at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.
He was born in Cincinnati and moved to Hilton Head Island in 1976 from Rochester, N.Y. He was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was an executive with Eastman Kodak and retired in 1976. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Country Club of Rochester and the Sea Pines Country Club. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Charlotte Newton Lorbach of Hilton Head Island; a daughter, Patricia Dibella of Boston; a sister, Anne Lorbach Herget of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren, Richard D. Lorbach III, Vallery Dibella and Brendan Lorbach.

Ms. Alberta L. Days, 53, died Jan. 5 in New York.
She was born in Chatham County. She graduated from Sol. C. Johnson Class of 1965 and attended Savannah State University. She was a patient care technician.

Fred Everhart died Dec. 26, 1999, at Hospice Savannah.
He was a native of Maryville, Tenn., and a resident of Savannah the past six years.

MARIETTA -- Lane Barnett, 68, formerly of Richmond Hill, died Jan. 6.
He was born in Norphlet, Ark., and attended school in Louisiana. He received a B.S. degree from Louisiana State University, a master's degree from Georgia Tech and a doctor's degree from Von Karman Institute of Fluid Dynamics in Brussels, Belgium. He was retired from Lockheed Aircraft after 25 years. He was also retired from Gulf Stream Aeronautical in Savannah.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Jean Barnett of Marietta; two sons, Jeff Barnett of Norcross and Brad Barnett of Marietta; three daughters, Suzanne and Eden Barnett, both of Marietta, and Bev Gladin of Richmond Hill; two brothers, Brant Barnett of Ferriday, La., and Hardy Barnett of Denham Springs, La.; five grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was born in Tattnall County and lived in Evans County most of her life. She was a partner in Claxton Wholesale Co., and also a longtime office manager at Claxton Manufacturing Co. After retiring, she moved to Jekyll Island.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, and was a former resident of Tucson, Ariz. She lived in Jesup for the past year and was a member of American Association of Retired Persons.
