SURVIVORS: two sons, Henry E. Ingram Jr. of Hilton Head Island, S.C. and Kent Garvin Ingram of New Holland, S.C.; three daughters, Cynthia Mallard of Lexington, S.C., Bonni Futch of Brentwood, Tenn.; and Merle-Ann Wall of Ridgeland, S.C.; a sister, Sue Garvin Howard of Aiken, S.C.; 23 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Penny White, 89, died Jan. 1 at Memorial Health University Medical Center. She was a native of Newington and was a domestic most of her life. She was a member of St. Peter's A.M.E. Church.

Norwood Robbins Sr.
Norwood Robbins Sr., 60, died Dec. 30 at Memorial Health University Medical Center. He was born in Savannah, lived in New York for 14 years and in Savannah for 46 years. He was a carpenter and worked at Sidney A. Jones Funeral Home for many years.

BEAUFORT -- James Earl Duncan, 75, died Jan. 1 at Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C. He was a member of Baptist Church of Beaufort and a Navy veteran. He worked at Beaufort Hardware for 25 years.

George A. Lutz
BROOKLET -- George A. Lutz, 76, died Jan. 1 at home. He was a native of Newark, N.J., and a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Linden, N.J., and the Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was captain of the Linden, N.J. Volunteer Ambulance Corp. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served aboard the battle ship New Jersey. He retired from Exxon Corporation after 36 years and relocated to Brooklet in 1988. He was a 52 year Master Mason, a member of the Ogeechee Lodge No. 243, and a Royal Arch Mason Lodge No. 59, both of Statesboro and was also a past patron of Emmaus Chapter No. 183, Order of the Eastern Star, Linden, N.J.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Betty Lutz of Brooklet; a daughter and son-in-law, Marie Lutz Abbe and Paul both of Raleigh, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, George and Linda Lutz of Brick Township, N.J.; and a grandson, Jeffrey Lutz of Brick Township, N.J.

CLAXTON -- Ora Mae Mitchell, 91, died Dec. 31 at Claxton Nursing Home. She was a native of Tattnall County, but had lived most of her life in Evans County. She was a member of Emmaus Primitive Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: three sons and daughters-in-law, Herman and Margaret Mitchell of Clear Water, Fla., Alton and Areta Mitchell of Fort Worth, Texas, and David and Jane Mitchell of Savannah; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Talmadge Jones of Reidsville, and Deloris and J.P. Warren of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Geneva Mitchell, wife of the late Estus Mitchell, of Savannah; two brothers, Harry Anderson of Bellville and Jim Anderson of Manassas, three sisters, Janie Boyette, Olga Lee Thompson and Hilda Thomas, all of Savannah; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alphonso Polite Sr.
DUDLEY, N.C. -- Alphonso Polite Sr., 45, died Dec. 28 at home. He was born in Savannah and moved to Goldsboro, N.C. in 1978. The last three years, he lived in Dudley. He was educated in the public schools of Savannah and attended Savannah State University. He was retired from Georgia Pacific after 20 years of service and started "Polite & Sons Trucking Co." in Dudley. He was a former member of Butler Presbyterian Church in Savannah.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Dionne Cook of Ft. Hood, Texas; two sons, Corie Anderson of New York City, and Alphonso Polite Jr. of Goldsboro; his mother, Helen P. Tippins of Savannah; two sisters, Amie L. Polite of Marietta, and Pamela T. Johnson of Laurel, Md.; a brother, Earl Felton Tippins of Savannah; maternal grandmother, Della Polite of Savannah; several aunts, including Mrs. Dandy Taylor of Savannah; uncles, and other relatives.

Rebecca "Gal Boles" Owens, 77, died Dec. 31 at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was a native of Savannah and had retired from National Linen. She worked with the Senior Citizens Group and was affiliated with Speed and Smart Funeral Home. She was a member of Gospel Choir at Second Arnold Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: three sons, Roland Owens of Fort Sill, Okla., William F. Nelson of Savannah and Earl Soal of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Theresa Williams of Savannah and Reta Nelson of Saint Helena Island, S.C.; a brother, Alexander Speed of Savannah; sixteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, an aunt, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gladys P. Atkinson
MILLEN -- Gladys Proctor Atkinson, 92, died Jan. 1 at Wesley Woods Hospital, Atlanta. She was a native of Scarboro and was a retired high school teacher who had taught science and biology in Columbus, Millen and Atlanta. She was chosen as STAR Teacher several times while teaching in Atlanta. She was an active member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.
SURVIVORS: several nieces and nephews, including Harmon L. Proctor of Greensboro.

Ollie L. Cain
Ollie Lee Cain, 89, died Jan. 2 at home. He was a native of Banks County and lived in Savannah from 1948 until 1968 when he moved to Atlanta. He returned to Savannah 11 years ago. He was former owner of Cain Trucking Co. and retired from Superior Trucking Co. He was a member of Silk Hope Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Myrtle Ruth Jones Cain of Savannah; a daughter and son-in-law, Becky C. Helmly and Keevil Helmly Jr. of Savannah; two sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Kay Cain of San Antonio, and Ollie L and Beth Cain of Roswell; two sisters, Mary Brewer of Homer and Donie Mae Wilson of Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Wilma Canterbury of Guyton; two daughters, Shannon Canterbury of Rincon and Sharon Canterbury of Richmond Hill; five sons, Darryl Alvarez and Norman Bowen both of North Carolina, Gerald Bowen of Pembroke, Gary and Brandon Eddy, both of Guyton; his mother, Mary Canterbury of Statesboro; three sisters, Catherine Coto of Florida, Nancy Mincey of Guyton and Tonya Moore of Brooklet; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Cortez Prosser Hadden, 87, died Jan. 1 at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was a native of Moultrie but resided in Savannah the past 55 years. She was the widow of Ben L. Hadden. She retired from Belk's of Savannah and was an active member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church and worked with the Nursing Home Ministry at Savannah Rehabilitation Center for more than 25 years. She was honored in 1992 by Ardsley Park Baptist Church as Mother of the Year.
SURVIVORS: a brother, William R. Prosser Jr. of Alapaha; a sister, Lillian Dorminey of Alapaha; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles W. Harley, 73, died Jan. 1 at home. He was a lifelong resident of Savannah, a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the U.S. Civil Service. He was a member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion.

JESUP -- Mike Head, 37, died Jan. 1 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Wayne County, a former resident of Alma and Atlanta and a resident of Jesup the past 17 years. He was a graduate of Griffin Technical Institute and was employed with the Federal Correctional Institution in Jesup the past 10 years. He was a member of the American Federation of Government Employees Union Local No. 3981, the Altamaha Area Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, South Georgia Chapter of the Easy Riders motorcycle club, Tri-County Gun Club in Odum and Big Creek Baptist Church in Alma.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Vicki Kirby Head of Jesup; three daughters, Kristy and Kimberly Head, both of Stockbridge, and Harley Head of Jesup; a son, Ethan Head of Jesup; his mother, Marvine N. BEAUFORT -- Charles J. "Charley" Plemmons, 79, died Jan. 1 at home. He was a native of Coalwood, W.Va. He served in the Marine Corps from 1939-1954 and achieved the rank of master sergeant. He attended Shell Point Baptist Church and was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Norma Stanley Plemmons of Port Royal; a son, Charles B. Plemmons of Beaufort; two daughters, Beverly Lane of Beaufort and Wanda Smiley of Glendale, Calif.; a sister, Juanita Blalock of Jacksonville, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

ALMA -- Mrs. Betty Lee Sweat, 88, died Jan. 2 at Satilla Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Bacon County but lived most of her life in Pierce County. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and the widow of Archie R. Sweat.
SURVIVORS: four daughters, Virginia Lewis of Jesup, Iris Mixon and Carolyn Huggins, both of Alma, and Sandra Crews of Waycross; three sisters, Beatrice Lee and Blanche Brown, both of Waycross, and Bessie Sweat of Blackshear; several-in-laws, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and other relatives.

John J. Williams Jr.
BEAUFORT -- John J. Williams Jr., a retired Marine Corps master gunnery sergeant, 58, died Dec. 28 at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He was a native of Beaufort County and retired from the Marine Corps with 31 years of service. He received the Purple Heart and other medals and commendations. Since his retirement in 1992 he was employed as the Motor Transport Maintenance Shop supervisor at the Marine Corps Air Station.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Cassie Mae Simmons Williams of Beaufort; a daughter, Courtney Williams of Beaufort; two sons, Terry Williams and John J. Williams III, both of Beaufort; three brothers, Thomas Williams of Miami, David Williams of Georgia and Curtis Williams of Beaufort; five sisters, Dorothy Beck and Charlette Williams of Florida, Ruthelle Jones of Hinesville, Ga., Elizabeth Henry of New York and Hilda Corbin of Akron, Ohio; and a grandson.

GUYTON -- Margie Shearouse Williams, 70, died Jan. 2 at a daughter's residence. She was a native of Effingham County, a member of Riverside Baptist Church and formerly worked at Guyton Drug Store.
