A native of Spartanburg he was the husband of Nizabell Splawn and son of the late Walter Splawn and Pearl Splawn. He was a member of White Hall United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Mark Splawn of the home; a grandson reared in the home, Master Mark Splawn Jr.; a brother, Bozille Splawn of Campobello; and a sister, Wanetta Splawn of Washington, D.C. UNION -- James Marvin Coward, 86, of 301 Second St., Ottaray Community died June 12, 2000, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Columbia he was the husband of Gladys West Coward and son of the late James Lewis Coward and Edna Ballentine Coward. He was a member of the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and a member of the Cecil O'Dell's Sunday School class. He was a lifetime member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge No. 334 and a member of the American Legion Post No. 22. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Milliken's Monarch Plant after 47 years of service. Surviving in addition to his wife are a brother, John W. Coward of Union; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Bennie Green. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens. The body is at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today to await the hour of service. The family is at the home. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Cross. Surviving in addition to her father are two daughters, Wendy R. Wilson of Adams Run and Crystal Lynn Wilson of John's Island; a son, Bubba Wilson of John's Island; three sisters, Marsha Blaine of Cross, Irene Kaatz of Chessapeake, Va., and Mechele Sweatman of John's Island; two brothers, Michael Busbin and Mark Busbin, both of Cross; and four grandchildren. ROEBUCK -- John Milton Shuller, 71, of 419 West Road died June 13, 2000, at his home. A native of Spindale, N.C., he was the husband of the late Melissa Hardin Shuller and son of the late Charlie and Garnet Bost Shuller. He retired from Fluor-Daniel after more than 30 years of service. He attended First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Surviving are three sons, Robby Shuller of Roebuck and Marty and Danny Earley, both of Spartanburg; two daughters, Sherrie Edge of Moore and Marlene Stevens of Chesnee; two sisters, Pat McDaniel of Spindale and Polly Bostic of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Isabelle "Das" Robinson Gist, 80, of 224 Caulder Circle died June 12, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg she was the widow of James David Gist, Sr. and daughter of the late Johnny Robinson and Frances Hardy Robinson. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she was a deaconess. She was retired from Evans and McCracken junior high schools. Surviving are a son, James David Gist Jr. of Spartanburg; a daughter, Shanta Faye Foster of Shelby, N.C.; a stepson, Robert Gist of Spartanburg; a brother, Wallace Prater of Spartanburg; a sister, Flora Smith of the home; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- Ruth Waddell Blanton, 86, formerly of Spartanburg died June 13, 2000, in Beverly Health Care Center in Hendersonville. A native of Fayetteville, N.C., she was the wife of the late Horace L. Blanton and daughter of the late James McNeil and Lelia Elizabeth Jones Waddell. She was retired from Spartan Mills after 38 years of service and attended Green Street Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Essie Blanton Harper of Spartanburg and Peggy Blanton Howe of Columbia; one son, James Robert Blanton of Cowpens; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wofford Carlisle Fridy Jr., 74, died June 12, 2000 at his home. A native of Spartanburg he was the husband of Ethel Crispens Fridy of the home and son of the late Wofford Carlisle Fridy Sr. and Julia Hardin Fridy. He attended Clemson University and graduated from Wofford College in 1948. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He was retired from Greer Drug Company after 39 years of service as a wholesale drug sales representative. He was a member of Kilgo United Methodist Church where he held most church offices plus Sunday School teacher and president, usher and member of the United Methodist Men. He received an award for 10 years of faithful service delivering friendship lunch trays to shut-ins and was lay person of the year for his church. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Nancy Fridy Connell of Durham, N.C.; a son, David Carlisle Fridy of Waxhaw, N.C.; a brother, James Hardin Fridy; two sisters, Sara Purser and Marinelle Peery; and five grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Kilgo United Methodist Church conducted by Dr. Michael Leatherwood. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow privately for the family. Surviving are two daughters, Lynn Reynolds of Moore and Sandra Henderson of Spartanburg; one son, Ken Reynolds of Spartanburg; and five grandchildren. HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Inez Caldwell Coggins, 82, of Sunbridge of the Triad died June 11, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital. A native of Asheville, N.C., she was the wife of the late George M. Coggins Sr. and daughter of Alfred Shorter and Inez Elizabeth Ballard Caldwell. She was a retired salesperson from Sears and was of the Presbyterian faith. She was an artist, an accomplished musician and a member of the Oratorical Society of Greensboro. Surviving are a daughter, Gertrude Coggins Compus of Pensacola Fla.; two sons, David John Coggins of Greensboro, N.C., and George M. Coggins Jr. of Lexington, N.C.; a brother, David Caldwell of Bristol, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A native of Cherokee County he was son of Gary Lee "Dute" Pennington of Gaffney and Kathy Jean Brown Gregory of Salisbury. He worked in construction and was of the Pentecostal faith. Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Kelly JoAnn Goode of Salisbury; a paternal grandmother, Wilma Pennington; a maternal grandfather, Gene Brown; a maternal grandmother, JoAnne Brown; and a maternal stepgrandfather, Leroy Brown, all of Gaffney. Thomas Monroe Johnson, 63, of 534 Farley Ave. died June 18, 2000, at his home. A native of Spartanburg he was son of Flora Netherton Johnson and the late Herman L. Johnson. He was retired from Spartanburg City Fire Department after 26 years of service and also from Sears. He was a member of the S.C. Fire Fighter's Association and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Montgomery Chapter of the Eastern Star. Survivors include his mother, Flora Netherton Johnson of Spartanburg. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Harry Lesesne McCraw, 73, died June 20, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center. A native of Cherokee County he was the husband of the late Mazella McCraw and son of the late William Clarence and Annie Mae McCraw. He was a member of Derita Masonic Lodge and the Teamsters Union. He retired from Ryder PIE after 40 years of service. Surviving are three daughters, June Stromberg of Gastonia, N.C., Marlene McCraw of Lake Norman, N.C. and Charlotte Fisher of Concord, N.C.; a brother, William C. A native of Kelton he was the husband of Madge Harris Belue and son of the late Russell Belue Sr. and Ada Gault Belue. He attended Tanglewood Baptist Church and was retired from the city of Union. Surviving in addition to his wife are six sons, Jesse Wayne Belue and Jimmy Dean Belue, both of Jonesville, Larry Hope Belue and Kenneth Neil Belue, both of Union, Dennis Belue of Camden and Ricky Belue of Laurens; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. PACOLET -- Cora Jane Getsinger Malphrus, 58, formerly of Ridgeland died June 19, 2000, at her home in Pacolet after a brief illness. A native of Bluffton she was daughter of the late Charles J. Getsinger and Cora Jane Graves Getsinger. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Pacolet. She was a former member of Great Swamp Baptist Church of Ridgeland. Surviving are a son, Jason R. Malphrus of Great Falls, Mont.; a daughter, Natalie Hay of Pacolet; two sisters, Jackie Viens of Bluffton and Beverly Odum of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Great Swamp Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bluffton Cemetery in Bluffton. COLUMBIA -- Suzanne McBee Heath McCoy, 83, died June 20, 2000. A native of Norfolk, Va., she was the wife of Russell Austin McCoy Jr. and daughter of the late James Elliott and Rosa Echols McBee Heath. She was a graduate of Ashley Hall School in Charleston. She lived in Spartanburg for 16 years, during which time she was involved in numerous charitable efforts, clubs and organizations. She was a charter member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. A resident of Columbia since 1974, she has been a contributor of manuscripts, documents and portraits to the South Carolina Library and the State Museum. She was a member of St. Martins-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, Columbia. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Russell Austin McCoy III of Columbia and James Elliott Heath McCoy of Charleston; a daughter, Martha McCoy Case of Spartanburg; a sister, Rosa McBee Heath Bridges of Still Hopes; and five grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Elmwood Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. J. Fletcher Montgomery. FLORENCE -- William McMillian Ayres, 85, died June 19, 2000, in a local hospital. A native of Nichols he was the husband of Elizabeth Carter Ayres of the home and son of the late Dr. Crofton and Catherine Zimmerman Ayres. He was manager of the real estate department of Aiken & Co. in Florence for more than 40 years. He was twice president of the Florence Real Estate Board and served as a director of the S.C. Real Estate Board. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as past president of the Men's Brotherhood, served on the Board of Deacons for several terms, served as Church Trustee for many years, Superintendent of the Sunday School department and in other leadership roles. He was a member of the Fifty-Year Club and the Fiftieth Anniversary Club. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kay Ayres Powell of Spartanburg; a son, William Carter Ayres of Florence; and three grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today in Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 300 S. Irby St., Florence, S.C. 29501.
