FOREST CITY, N.C. -- Willie Lee "Winkie" Pearson, 84, of 203 Academy St., Cliffside, N.C., died Oct. 20, 2000 at Autumn Care of Forest City. He was a native of Cleveland County, son of the late Charley and Zudie Hawkins Pearson, retired from Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant. He was former president, coach and umpire of Tri Community Little League, and a member of Cliffside Baptist Church. He was married to the late Hattie Hawkins Pearson. He is survived by one son, Ronald Pearson of Cliffside, N.C.; three daughters, Earnesteen "Tenny" Barnes of Mooresboro, N.C., Frances Wallace of Las Vegas and Linda Conner of Cliffside, N.C.; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. Henry Clay Spence
RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. -- Henry Clay Spence, 50, of 179 Riceville Road, Rutherfordton, N.C., died Oct. 20, 2000 at his residence. Native of Kinston, N.C., son of Rodney L. and Ann Taylor Spence of Kinston, he was employed by Kemet of Shelby, N.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in Viet Nam, and a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Kinston, N.C. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Sara Barnes Spence of the home; one son, Josh Spence of the home; one daughter, Leah S. and husband Mark Butler of Forest City, N.C.; one brother, Keith Spence of Las Vegas; two sisters, Annette Ipock of Kinston and Jeanette Kennedy of Deep Run, N.C. Visitation will be Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, N.C. John Robert Harris
UNION -- John Robert Harris, 60, of 1510 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, died Oct. 20, 2000 at his home after a brief illness. A native of Union County, he was the son of Ruby Vinson Harris of the home and the late Marshall Harris. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, a Veteran of the U.S. Army, and self-employed with Harris Paint Contractors. Surviving in addition to his mother are one daughter, Christie Harris Powell of Harlem, Ga.; three sisters, Brenda K. Harris of Union, Judy G. Phillips of Dallas, Tex., and Sherry D. Harris of the home; two brothers, Joseph T. Harris of Union and Danny D. Harris of Sharon; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by the Revs. Keith Sweat and Larry Hyder. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. LANDRUM -- Eston Rhodes Gosnell, 39, of 409 S. Church St., Landrum, died Oct. 20, 2000. A native of Polk County, N.C., he was the son of Betty Jo Brannon Gosnell and the late James A. "Stick" Gosnell. He was employed at Mohawk and was a Baptist. Surviving in addition to his mother are two sons, Corey Gene Gosnell of Campobello and Jessie James Gosnell of Columbus, N.C.; three daughters, Misty Gosnell Simmons of Inman, Jessica Gosnell Cody of Camobello and Teleda Monique Gosnell of Landrum; and two sisters, Tiny Gosnell Watkins of Spartanburg and Patricia Gosnell Bailey of Landrum. Mamie M. Pridgen
Mamie Pridgen of 416 Crescent Avenue, died Oct. 21, 2000 at home following an extended illness. A native of Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Jerry Mitchell Sr. and Versie Garrett Mitchell. She was a member of Majority Baptist Church and she was a 1962 graduate of Carver High School. Survivors include two sons, Timothy G. Pridgen III, and J. Leon Pridgen II; two brothers, William Bernard Mitchell of the home; one half brother, Robert Davis and five grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the home. Mr. William B. Fulton
Mr. William Barnes Fulton, 88, of 406 Sellers St., Oak Island, N.C., died Thursday, October 19, 2000 at his residence. He was born February 21, 1912 in Dadeville, Alabama, son of the late Dr. W. B and Neva Barnes Fulton. He moved to Oak Island from Spartanburg, S.C. seven months ago. He was a graduate of Auburn University and was a retired cartographer with the Soil Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture following 36 years of service. He was a member, ruling elder, and for over 40 years served as a pianist for Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, S.C. and was an accomplished jazz pianist. He had formerly served as treasurer of U.S. Soil Conservation Service Credit Union. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Eunice Carlisle Fulton, of the home; a son, William R. Fulton and wife, Ann Aiken Fulton of Spartanburg; a daughter, Mary Fulton Campbell and husband, Kenneth R. Campbell of Southport, S.C.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m., today, Sunday, October 22, 2000 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel conducted by Dr. Mark Durrett. Nora Lee Bell
Nora Lee Thomas Bell, 84, of 37 Endeavor Dr., died Saturday, October 21, 2000 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Atlanta, Ga. and a resident of the Whitney Community, she was the daughter of the late John and Leola Thompson Thomas. She was the wife of the late Leroy Bell. She retired from Butte Knit, Jonathan Logan Division. She was a member of Whitney United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, James H. Nelms, Jr. and Mary Frances Nelms, Charles G. Nelms and Linda Lewis Nelms, all of Asheville N.C., Zachary Lee Bell of Spartanburg; one granddaughter, Rebecca Nelms Keil of Black Mountain, N.C. and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Samantha Keil. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today, Sunday, October 22, 2000 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Dr. Charles A. Graves. Hans Peter Rentzsch
Hans Peter Rentzsch 60, of 150 Tipton Court, Chesnee, S.C. died Friday, October 20, 2000 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Switzerland, he was the husband of Llewelyn (Lou) Rentzsch and the son of the late Otto and Martha Rentzsch. He was an employee of Rieter Corporation. He was of the Protestant faith. Survivors in addition to his wife include: One daughter, Kristina Rentzsch Spitler and son-in-law Brian L. Spitler of Haw River, N.C. Two grandchildren, Austin Spitler and Brianna Spitler of Haw River, N.C. Two step-children, Christina Sherbert and Dennis Wimberly, Jr. One step-grandchild, Nicholas Sherbert, all of Mayo, S.C. Two brothers, Alfred Rentzsch and Robert Rentzsch of Switzerland. A stepson Olin Cobb and step-grandson, Gabriel Cobb from his deceased wife, Ann Cobb Rentzsch. Mary Alice Shelor Newcome
Born April 22nd, 1936, in Sumter, S.C. she died October 20th, 2000 at 2 a.m. in Skylyn Place, Spartanburg. Her parents were Henry and Jessie Shelor, both deceased, and her sisters are Gwynn Duffee of Florence, S.C. and Betsy Kent, of Columbia. Alice graduated from Sumter High School in 1954, and from Duke University in 1958 with a degree in Nursing. While attending Duke she met Jim Newcome, from Gary, Indiana. They were married for 22 years, and raised three children, James, who lives in Fiji, Joel who lives in Dayton, Ohio, and Catherine, who lives in New York. Living in Charleston, S.C. from 1960 to 1969, Alice was a nurse at the Medical College and very active in First Scots Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir. In Spartanburg from 1969 on she was a nurse at Spartanburg General then ran an office for Clinical Drug Investigators of New York, and was a nurse at Mary Black Hospital. She went to First Presbyterian Church and later to Trinity Unity Methodist Church, and then to Westminster Presbyterian Church. Alice was a active member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment and a kind caregiver to many a dog or cat. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. Sunday at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. The family is at 269 W. Hampton Ave. Spartanburg. Elizabeth Austell Mckenney, 37, of Taylors, S.C, died Friday, October 20. She was a native of Spartanburg, S.C. and graduated from the Spartanburg Day School in 1981. She attended Ferrum College in Virginia. She is survived by her husband, Ronald McKenney; three daughters, Chelsea Warlick, Elizabeth Bailey Hendren, and Alexandria Hendren; her mother, Suzanne Martin of Markham, Va; her maternal grandparents, Harwood and Louise Cochrane of Rockville, VA; three sisters, Lucretia Austell of Tampa, Fla., Jennifer Austell-Wolfson of Orlean, Va., and Anna Austell Dozal of Staunton, Va. Rachel Durham "Doc" Knight, of 313 Milliken St., died October 20, 2000 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Holly Springs, she was the daughter of the late William P. "Bird" and Elzie Farmer Durham. She was a member of Drayton Baptist Church and was retired from the textile industry. Survivors include her husband, Albert Knight; two sons, Norman Knight of Gaffney and Rudy Knight of the home; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Agnes Lindsey of Greer, Tamar Pennington of Drayton and Katie Corbin of Spartanburg, and a brother, Joe Durham of Drayton. James W. Wilburn
James W. Wilburn, 76, of 501 Camelot Drive, Apt. 37, died Dec. 8, 2000, in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after a lengthy illness. A native of Union, he was the husband of Kathy Davis Wilburn and the son of the late Clarence and Feribia Roach Wilburn. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Union and had retired from Conso Products. He also was a veteran of the Coast Guard and the Air Force. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Dan Wilburn of Fountain Inn; two stepdaughters, Janie Marie Bright and Joye Faye Whaley, both of Greenville; two stepsons, Eustace Pinckney and Jimmy Pinckney, both of Fountain Inn; and three step-grandchildren. Margie Hampton Grant
GAFFNEY -- Margie Hampton Grant, 78, of 218 12th St. died Dec. 9, 2000 in Upstate Carolina Medical Center. A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Marshall and Virgie Metcalf Hampton. She was a retired Cherokee County teacher and was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church where she was an Amazing Grace Singer. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Grant McDaniel of Easley and Jane Hampton Grant Watkins of Lyman; one son, Dr. J. Michael Grant of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Joe Mack Hampton of Gaffney; and one granddaughter. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Chapel with the Dr. Clyde Thomas and the Rev. Frank Northcutt officiating. Interment will be at Frederick Memorial Gardens. Truman Tillman, 82, of 519 Central Ave., husband of Edna Caskey Tillman, died Dec. 9, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Lancaster. A native of Jefferson, Ga., he was the son of the late Prince Albert Tillman Sr. and Ethel Hollis Tillman and was first married to the late Ruth Ballard Tillman. He was a member of the East Side Baptist Church, the Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380 and Eastern Star Chapter No. 146. He was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher, Boy Scout leader and R.A. leader. Survivors in addition to his wife include three sons, the Rev. Donald W. Tillman of Buffalo, Gerald R. Tillman Charlotte, N.C., and Charles H. Tillman of Bossier City, La.; one brother, T.W. Jordan Anthony West
Infant Jordan Anthony West died Dec. 7, 2000 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was the son of Tony and Michelle M. West of Duncan. In addition to his parents, he was survived by grandparents, Jean West of Campobello and Randy Moody of Saluda, Harry and Betty Edwards of Inman; great-grandmother, Annie Mae Hutchins of Campobello; two sisters, Summer West of Duncan and Jessica West of Wellford; two brothers, Jacob West of Reidville and Joshua West of Wellford. Graveside services will be held 4 p.m. today at Cannon Memorial Park. Cannon Jones Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Arthur Johnson
GREENVILLE -- Arthur Johnson, 84, of 107 Broadford Road died Dec. 9, 2000, at Allen Bennett Hospital. A native of Startex, he was the son of the late Hence and Sarah Ann Pearson Johnson and widower of Delma J. Johnson. He was a machine operator for 30 years at Ashworth Brothers and an Army veteran of World War II. He also was a member of Lee Road United Methodist Church and attended Fellowship Sunday School Class. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will beheld 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Wood Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. David Surrett. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family is at their respective homes. Jeffery L. Burnett
Jeffrey "Jeff" Lee Burnett, 40, of 316 Henderson St., Arcadia, died Dec. 9, 2000 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of Fred William and Lorine Thrift Burnett of Moore. He was employed by Christman Parsons Inc. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Fred William Burnett, Jr. of Arcadia. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Charles Jennings. Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. today at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Linda Parris Butts
Linda Parris Butts of 263 Charlie Drive, Cowpens, died Dec. 9, 2000, at her home. A native of Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Calvin Parris and Clara Lawson Parris and the wife of Danny Wayne Butts. She also was an employee of Amoco Fabric & Fibers and a member of Fairview Baptist Church of Gaffney. Survivors in addition to her mother and husband are two sons, Eddie Cox of Gaffney and Andy Butts of Cowpens; one daughter, Lisa Cox Thompson of Gaffney; three sisters, Betty P. Darby of Florence, Kay P. Whitlock of Moore and Cindy P. Suttles of Duncan; three brothers, Hoyt Parris of Virginia Beach, Va., Wyman Parris of Lyman and Glenn Parris of Duncan; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Jimmy Westmoreland, Terry Pleasant, and Mike Cook. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.
