FORT MILL - Retired Fort Mill businessman, civic and religious leader George Ackerman died Monday, May 17, 1999. He was 84.
"We moved to Fort Mill the same year, 1952," said former Fort Mill schools Superintendent J.H. "Hoss" Nesbitt. "He opened the store, and I came as principal of the high school."
Ackerman, who owned Ackerman's Style Center on Main Street with his wife, Sarah, "only wanted the best for all concerned " the best for the town and the best for the schools," Nesbitt said.
The Ackermans owned and operated the store for 34 years.
He was a very integral part of the downtown business district, said Murray White of Fort Mill. At one point, "we had a time that the Chamber of Commerce, as an organization, was floundering, and we were having a difficult time finding someone to be president," he said. Ackerman took on the job, got the chamber back on track and "laid the foundation for the chamber as we know it today," White said.
In 1980, Ackerman was named Citizen of the Year by the Fort Mill Chamber of Commerce. He was a chamber board member, a member of Toastmasters International, Fort Mill Toastmasters and a charter member of Optimists International.
Ackerman also was a well-respected Jewish educator and Cantor. He was a Bronfman Scholar and a graduate of Chicago Theological Seminary (Yeshiva). Ackerman served in the combined role of rabbi and cantor for the Jewish Synagogue in Salisbury, N.C., and at Temple Israel, during high holy days.
"George and Sarah had leading roles in the Seder celebrations we had at the Wesley Foundation," said Risher Brabham, campus minister at Winthrop University.
Ackerman also organized Operation Snowflake, a group of Jewish people and non-Jews who volunteer to work at Piedmont Medical Center on Christmas Day so workers can have the day off.
Operation Snowflake has been sponsored worldwide by B'nai B'rith, an international charitable organization, for more than 50 years. Ackerman started the local effort in 1991.
"Mr. Ackerman was responsible for developing and directing Operation Snowflake. Mr. Ackerman and his friends took over duties of volunteers who would normally work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, allowing the volunteers to be at home with their families. He has been a true friend to the auxiliary and will be missed," said Lucille Clemens, president of the volunteer auxiliary at Piedmont Medical Center.

Marion Gross
For years, Marion Gross turned his wheelchair backward and pushed himself along with his feet so he could "walk" in the annual CROP walk, his greatest passion.
Gross's friends remember the man, who suffered from cerebral palsy and was confined to a wheelchair, as an inspiration to the able-bodied people around him.
Gross, 42, died at his home Sunday. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Old Purity Cemetery in Chester, with the Rev. James Gable and Dr. Tom Patterson officiating.
Gable is the pastor at Tirzah Presbyterian Church, where Gross was a member. Gable said Gross' involvement with the CROP walk was an inspiration to others.
"His being a part of the CROP walk - it inspired others to participate in it, walk in it and contribute to it," Gable said. "We may never know how many people were helped because of Marion Gross. That was one way he could profess his faith in God and humanity."
Charles Currence first invited Gross to Tirzah Presbyterian more than 10 years ago. Gross lived with his parents at the time, and Currence would pick him up each Sunday for church. When Gross moved into his own apartment, Currence would visit him on the weekends.
"He would always say "I'm not handicapped, I can do just about anything anybody else can.' It was the way he looked at life," Currence said. "He was a fun person to be around. He'd kid you like you'd kid him."
Gross loved the outdoors and often could be found at Cherry Park, Currence said. Many people in Rock Hill recognized his motorized wheelchair speeding along the side of the road. With the CROP walk, Gross found another way of reaching out to others.
"He figured that's what he could do to give something back to society," Currence said.
Gross pushed himself along in his wheelchair in the CROP walk as long as he was physically able to do so. After his chair was motorized, Gross would lead the walk with his orange flag waving ahead of the crowd.
"He took great pride being at the front of the line. He didn't like to be passed. That motorized wheelchair was probably too slow for him," said Risher Brabham, who organizes the walk.
The CROP walk raises money each year for local and international organizations to help feed and support those in need. Gross was invariably the walk's most devoted participant, raising $12,206 in 13 years. Even when he was in the hospital in 1997 and couldn't participate, Gross raised $2,092. Since 1987, Gross was grand marshal.
Every year, Gross would go from house to house carrying a long stick to ring doorbells as he solicited donations.
Brabham remembers Gross's sense of humor and adventurous spirit, recalling that Gross did a tandem skydiving jump in 1988.
"He had a great smile and great laugh," Brabham said. "It's not going to be the same to have a CROP walk without Marion."
Gross was someone who reached out through his own pain to help end hunger for people who will never know him, Gable said.
"He could reach out to others and help them have a better life and, in helping others have a better life, brought some light and joy into his own life," he said.
Surviving are his father, Marion Lee Gross of Rock Hill; his brother, Robert Lee Gross of Weddington, N.C.; his sister, Patricia Franklin of Great Falls; and his maternal grandmother, Novella Davis of Catawba.
