Lucile E. Rogers
Retired beautician

Lucile Edens Charles Rogers, 82, wife of Harold F. Rogers of 108 Hillcrest Drive, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at 7:55 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Rogers was born in Union on May 20, 1915, a daughter of the late Samuel Vance Edens Sr., and Marguerite Plate Edens. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a life-time member of the Retired Naval Officers Auxiliary. She was a graduate of Union High School where she was a member of the basketball team and was a retired beautician. Mrs. Rogers was first married to the late J.D. Charles.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two step-sons, Don Robert Rogers and Terry J. Rogers, both of Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Myra Willard, Roy Edens and Vance Edens. Cryptside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum conducted by the Rev. Gary Byrd.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday from noon until 1:30 p.m. The family is at the home, 108 Hillcrest Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jesteen M. Colter

Jesteen Mack Colter of 2176 A-Z Road, North, died at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg after an extended illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Janette H. Dawkins
J.P. Stevens employee

CARLISLE Janette H. Dawkins, 60, wife of John Dawkins, of 143 Family Circle, Carlisle, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Dawkins was born Feb. 17, 1944 in Carlisle a daughter of the late William Spencer and Marie Hill. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and an employee of J.P. Stevens Co. Mrs. Dawkins attended Union County schools.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Robert (Betty) Dawkins and David (Hazel) Dawkins, both of Carlisle; two brothers, William (Shirley) Spencer of Philadelphia, Pa., and Carl Spencer; three sisters, Arrie Tucker of Carlisle, Joyce Dixon of Clover and Carolyn Capel of Marston, N.C.; six grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rosemont Cemetery by Brother Arthur Stevens. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family is at the home, 143 Family Circle, Carlisle. The Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dorothy M. Gowan
BUFFALO

Dorothy Mitchell Gowan, wife of William Gowan of 110 Drugstore St., Buffalo, died Friday morning, April 30, 2004, in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Nathaniel T. Hill IV
Riverside Middle School student

FOREST CITY, N.C. Nathaniel Thomas Hill IV, of 214 Baxter Way, died Saturday, April 24, 2004. A son of Nathaniel Thomas Hill III and Freda M. Crosby, he attended St. Luke Baptist Church in Union and was a student at Riverside Middle School in Pendleton.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters,, Brittany and Denisha Hill of Forest City; two brothers, Roscoe Crosby of Union and Jarvis Twitty of Forest City; maternal grandparents, Freddie and John Arthur Jeter of Buffalo and Roosevelt Smith of Union; and paternal grandparent, Katherine Hill of Gaffney.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Baptist Church in Union. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Visitation for family and friends will be from 3 until 4:30 p.m. today at New Bethel AME Zion Church, 263 Forest Street, Forest City, N.C. Sullivan Bros. Mortuary Inc. of Greer has charge of arrangements.

Sam Bentley
Retired from Kohler Co.

JONESVILLE Marion Eugene (Sam) Bentley, 67, husband of Elaine Weber Bentley of 253 Hickory Range Drive, died at his home Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at 10:15 p.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Bentley was born in Kelton on April 1, 1936, a son of the late J. G. and Virl Gault Bentley. He was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and the Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge. Mr. Bentley was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired from the Kohler Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, James Michael and Beverly Bentley of Boiling Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Allyson B. and Jeff Smith of Pauline; a sister, Cetora Kerr of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, James Robert and Ruth Bentley of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Anna Michael Bentley, Jeffrey Wayne Smith and Halie-Ann Bentley Smith; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Haney Family Cemetery conduced by the Rev. Ralph Brown. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 8:30. The family is at the home, 253 Hickory Ridge Drive, Jonesville.

Memorials may be made to the Haney Family Cemetery Fund, c/o Robert Bentley, 172 Buck Fowler Road, Jonesville, 29353 or to the CLC Fund of Jonesville Baptist Church, 301 Church St., Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Eunice P. Eison

Eunice P. Eison of Jonesville, died Thursday, May 1, 2003. She was the wife of the late Willie A. Eison. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Gibson and Brown Funeral Home.

Ada B. Gault
100 years old

Ada Bradburn Gault, 100, widow of Russell Gault, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at 8 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after several years of declining health. Mrs. Gault was born in Madison County, N.C., on Aug. 25, 1902; a daughter of the late Thadeus Wesley and Nancy Jane Kent Bradburn. She was the oldest member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of Mary Garner's Sunday School Class, the Lottie Moon Circle and the Keen-Age Club. Mrs. Gault was retired from Excel Hosiery Mill. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews including a great-niece June B. Helms of Rock Hill, reared in the home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jim Bradburn, Butch Dill, Perry Harmon, Tony Haney, Dennis Langley, Tommy Anthony and David Langley.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 to form the honorary escort: Members of Mary Garner's Sunday School Class, members of the Lottie Moon Circle, members of the Keen-Age Club and Elmer Rector, Raymond Jolly, Gene Edwards, B.E. Kirby, Don Shetley, (Wishie) Hines, Al Smith, Joe Willard, Dr. Kent Switzer, Dr. David Keith, Dr. T.C. Wilie and staff of Oakmont Nursing Home.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will recieve friends Saturday night from 7:30-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 20379 The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Retired from Excel Hosiery

Gladys S. Byrd
Retired from Excelsior Mill

Gladys Smith Byrd, 89, of 1450 Sardis Road, Union, widow of John W. Byrd, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at 7:12 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Byrd was born in Union on Oct. 4, 1914, a daughter of the late Clarence and Lizzie Greer Smith. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and was retired from Excelsior Mill with over 40 years of service.

Surviving are a sister, Thelma S. Lane of Union; a brother, Doug Smith of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Byrd was predeceased by a sister and brother, Myrtle S. Cudd and William W. Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Angelia Price and the Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Johnny Smith, Johnny Seigler, Tommy Cudd, Kevin Smith, Donald Ray Lane and Troy Smith. Members of the Ladies Sunday School Class of Sardis United Methodist Church are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 10 a.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her niece, Hazel McKinney, 1355 Sardis Road, Union. Memorials may be made to Perpetual Care, Sardis United Methodist Church, 964 Sardis Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
