Jefferson D. George Jr.
Retired from Duke Power
Jefferson Davis George Jr., 85, of Ivy Grove Assisting Living, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the widower of Janette Byars George ad was first married to the late Zerma Gentry George. He was the son of the late Jefferson Davis George Sr. and the late Pearl Whisnant George.
Mr. George was a retired crane operator for Duke Power Company and a member of Providence Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Businessmen’s Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda G. Scruggs of Gaffney and Kimberly G. Watts of Shelby; a son, John Davis George of Gaffney; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Cox. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Linda Scruggs, 214 Pleasant Meadows Dr., Gaffney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, S.C. 29342; or Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, S.C. 29648.

Clyde H. Robbins Sr.
Talented musician; founder of Robbins Brick
FOREST CITY, N.C. – Clyde H. Robbins Sr., 86, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004. Mr. Robbins was a resident of the Southern Assisted Living's Carolina House of Forest City.
A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Landrum and Bessie Robbins. His wife was the late Hazel Lovett Robbins. He was a charter member, deacon and music leader of Sulphur Springs Congregational Holiness Church, a member of The Gideons International and founder of Robbins Brick & Block Company.
Mr. Robbins' music career spanned most of his life. Through the 1940s, he was an original member of Byron Parker's Hired Hands band (using the stage name "Skippy" Robbins) with Snuffy Jenkins and Homer Sherrill on WIS Radio in Columbia, S.C., which was interrupted for military service in the U.S. Army during World War II. Afterwards, Mr. Robbins made many personal appearances, using his gift of music and song to serve and honor God, both at his church and through his appearances.
Mr. Robbins is survived by his six children – Rita Robbins of Chapel Hill, N.C., Clyde H. Robbins Jr. and his wife, Judy L., of Gaffney, Phillip Robbins and his wife, Joan M., of Rutherfordton, N.C., Dr. Mary Robbins and her husband, Carl Brockman, of Austin, Texas, James Robbins and his wife, Cameille Smith, of Greenville, N.C., and John Robbins and his wife, Alice C., of Gaffney; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Sulphur Springs Congregational Holiness Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Mr. Robbins to The Gideons International, Rutherfordton Camp 3214, P.O. Box 1462, Rutherfordton, N.C. 28139; and/or to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, N.C. 28043.

Nathaniel R. Haley
Grandson and nephew of Gaffney residents
CARLOCK, Ill. – Nathaniel Roy Haley, 18, of 2810 Greenfield Road, Bloomington, died May 28, 2004, as the result of a single vehicle crash in rural Carlock.
Nathaniel was a 2004 graduate of Normal Community High School and was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include his parents, Robert and Rebecca Griffin Haley, and a sister, Lauren, of the home; grandparents, Walt and Penni Griffin of Gaffney, Mary and Mitch Grahlman of Sumner, Iowa, and Wilbur Haley of Cherokee, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Megan Griffin of Gaffney, Kathy (Hank) Anzis of Marshalltown, Iowa, Shawn (Kathy) Griffin of St. Joseph, Mo., and Becky (Steve) Danly of Mechanicscille, Iowa.

James K. Orr
Navy veteran of World War II
James K. Orr, 79, formerly of Old Metal Road, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, in Brookview HealthCare Center.
A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of the late T.J. Orr Sr. and the late Minnie Noland Orr. He was a retired farmer and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Orr was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a brother, W.H. Orr Sr.; a sister, Edith Paige of Charlotte; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at New Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dewitt Clyde. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
Mr. Orr's nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family is at the home of W.H. Orr Sr., 1284 Old Metal Road, Gaffney.
Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, S.C., 29342.

Vada B. Davenport
Asheville, N.C., native
BLACKSBURG – Vada Karen Brown Davenport, 48, of 109 Finch Road, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at her residence.
A native of Asheville, N.C., she was the wife of Mark Davenport of the home and daughter of Beulah Ann Boone Brown and the late Clarence Nathaniel Brown. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and a nurses aide.
Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are sons, Scott Frisbee of Lawndale, N.C., and Kenneth Mark and his wife, Angela, Davenport of Blacksburg; daughter, Melissa Ann and her husband, Josh Patterson of Frankford, Ill.; five grandchildren; two brothers, David Brown of Kings Mountain and John Brown of Asheville; and a sister, Vanda Hamrick of Shelby.
In addition to her father, Mrs. Davenport was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip Brown.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Rock Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Brian Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Wil Cote, David Brown, Alvin Wylie, Michael Hamrick, David Richardson and Danny Davenport.
The family is at the residence.
Memorials may be made to Iron City Ministries, 109 W. Cherokee St., Blacksburg, S.C. 29702.

Josephine Blackwood
Former manager of The Standard Dress Shop
Josephine Price Blackwood, 85, of Brookview HealthCare Center, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Brookview.
A native of Polk County, N.C., she was the widow of Charles L. Blackwood and daughter of the late Zeb Price and the late Sara Jane Ruff Price. A former manager of The Standard Dress Shop, she also operated "Critter Creek" Cattle Farm in Whitestone, S.C. She was a member of Limestone Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Lilly Phillips of Polk County, N.C., and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Blackwood was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie J. Price, Ollie McClure and Mary Ruff, and a brother, Zeb Price Jr.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joyce Murphy. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg. The family will receive friends today from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Roger McClure, Hal Newton, James Barber, David Ruff, Abraham Ruff and J.D. Ruff.
Doug Marett will serve as honorary pallbearer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Limestone Street United Methodist Church, 910 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
Family members are at their respective homes.

"Pop" McAbee
Retired from Timken and Cherokee Finishing
Jack Leonard "Pop" McAbee, 65, of 550 E. O'Neal St., Apt. 12, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.
A native of Gaffney, he was the son of the late Willis McAbee and the late Viola Peterson McAbee. He was retired from The Timken Company and Cherokee Finishing Company. Mr. McAbee was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a daughter, April Anne McAbee Crawford of Gaffney; a granddaughter, Tayler Nycole McAbee of Gaffney; two sisters, Marie Echoles and Sara J. Mathis, both of Gaffney; a brother, Willis "W.J." McAbee of Gaffney; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McAbee was preceded in death by two brothers, Loyd McAbee and Rochelle McAbee, and a sister, Hettie Franklin.
Services will be held today at 4 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dean Painter.

The family is at 97 Brookwood Drive, Gaffney.

Charlie Lawson Jr.
Retired teacher
HICKORY GROVE – Charlie Lawson Jr., 54, of 2017 Smithford Road, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at 1691 Lee Foster Jr. Road in Hickory Grove.
A native of Summerton, he was the husband of Dr. Etheleen D. Lawson of the home and son of Carrie Lawson of Summerton and the late Charlie Lawson Sr. He was a member of Johns Chapel F.B. Holiness Church and was a retired teacher from B.D. Lee Elementary School.
Mr. Lawson graduated from Voorhees College with a B.A. degree and from South Carolina State University with a B.S. degree. He did further studies at Winthrop.
Also surviving are three daughters, Brendi Lawson, Dayn Lawson and Stney Lawson of Hickory Grove; and a brother, John Lawson of Sumter.
Arrangements are incomplete. Foster Funeral Home is in charge.

Evelyn Batchelor
Retired cashier
LAURENS - Evelyn Merle Bradford Batchelor, 87, of No.1 Martha Franks Dr., died Monday, July 5, 2004, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Harold Batchelor and daughter of the late Roy S. and Elsie Hawkins Bradford. She was a retired cashier for Roses Department Store and a member of First Baptist Church of Laurens. She formerly lived in Columbia where she attended Bayview Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Doris B. Dorman, Mary B. Adams and Frances B. Duncan.
Survivors include one sister, Shirley B. McSwain, of Laurens and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Oakland cemetery with the Rev. Stuart Kersey officiating.
Family members are at their respective homes.
