Essie Mae Williams Manning, 84, of 510 Thompson St., Brookview HealthCare Center, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at 1:30 a.m. at Brookview.
Daughter of the late Wylie Gist Sr. and the late Susie Poole Gist, she was a native of Union County and widow of Giles Manning Sr. She was first married
to the late Clarence Williams.
Mrs. Manning was a member of Dunton United Methodist Church and was a retired laundry employee.
Surviving are a son, Bobby Williams of Lancaster; a stepson, Billy Manning of Charlotte; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Dunton United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Wesley Evans. Burial will be in Concord Baptist Church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The family will receive friends Monday from 1:30-2 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers will be members of Dunton United Methodist Men and flower bearers will be members of Dunton United Methodist Women.

Ernestine F. White
Retired from Limestone Mill
Ernestine Fowler White, 73, of Apt. 42, Beltline Courts, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at her residence.
A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of Charlie White and daughter of the late Ernest Fowler and the late Clara Crocker Fowler. She was retired from Limestone Mill and was a member of Kirby Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are daughters, Denise Collins, Phyllis Bailey and husband, Gary, all of Gaffney, and Vicky Spencer of Woodruff; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Bloomer of Toledo, Ohio; and two sisters, Betty Yeargin and Pat Osteen, both of Gaffney.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. White was preceded in death by two brothers, F.M. Fowler and Sonny Bloomer, and a son-in-law, Ronnie Collins.
Pallbearers will be Chris Stone, Tony Stone, Tony Allison, Chuck Bailey, Wayne Bailey, Clay Collins, Michael Allman, Lee Allman and Timmy Allison.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Denise Collins, 1108 E. Frederick St., Gaffney.
Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.
James Huskey Jr.
Owner of J.J.’s Welding
James “J.J.” Huskey Jr., 76, of 116 Overhill Drive, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.
A native of Rutherfordton, N.C., he was the son of the late James Otis Huskey and the late Virginia Sentell Huskey. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Cherokee Creek Baptist Church. He was the welding superintendent for Duke Power, where he worked for 40 years, and owned his own business, J.J.’s Welding Service.
Survivors include Patsy of Gaffney; a daughter, Sandra H. Greene of Gaffney; sons, Mr. and Mrs. James T. “Terry” Huskey of Winston-Salem, N.C., Buck Huskey and Roger Wayne Huskey, both of Gaffney; grandchildren, Jason T. Huskey, Ashley M. Huskey, Lacee N. Greene; a great-grandson, Zachery Austin Huskey; sisters, Margaret Littlejohn, Linda Mosley, Wanda Parker, all of Gaffney, Hazel Jolly of Alabama, Christine Holt of Mooresboro, N.C., and Elaine Gauthier of Spartanburg; brothers, Elmer Huskey, Donald Huskey, Ricky Huskey, all of Gaffney, and Terry Huskey of North Augusta, S.C.
Services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Ron Jackson, Delos Blanton and Mike Frazier. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Buddy Huskey, Mike Parker, Joe Scruggs, Gene Petrea, Henry Duncan, Kevin Guy and Jesse Harris.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Miller, Olin Phillips, Mike Moss, Bill Spencer, Charlie Woods and Timmy Gibson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home of Roger Huskey, 423 Robbs School Road.
Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Inpatient Oncology Hospice Unit, 101 E. Wood St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29307.
Mary W. Martin
Retired school teacher
BLACKSBURG – Mary Wilma Martin, 95, of 937 S. Rutherford St., died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Peachtree Centre.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late T.G. and Corrie Herndon Martin. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, she taught in the Cherokee County school system for over 40 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Blacksburg, where she taught Sunday School for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas George Martin and James Martin, and two sisters, Margaret Wilson and Flora Spratt.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Blacksburg, conducted by the Revs. Chris Church and Don Whitener. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at White Columns of Blacksburg and at other times they will be at the home.
Pallbearers will be John Randolph Jr., Thomas George Martin Jr., James Campbell Jr., James Martin III, Phillip King and James King.
Memorials may be made to Senior Centers of Cherokee County, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., Gaffney, S.C. 29341.
Joe Dean Hambright
Cherokee Falls native
BLACKSBURG – Joe Dean Hambright, 63, of 1817 W. Cherokee St., died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee Falls, he was the husband of Carolyn Hughey Hambright and son of the late Woodrow Wilson Hambright and the late Margaret Louise Hardin Hambright. He was a member of Christian Fellowship Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Mickey Hambright of Boiling Springs, Ricky Hambright of York and Tim Hambright of Gaffney; and two grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hambright was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy Dole Hambright and Bobby Ray Hambright.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Charlie Barnard and Willie Lanier. Burial will be in Christian Fellowship Church cemetery/Hambright cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ryne Hambright, George Moss, Wayne Cobb, Haskell Durham, Larry Green and Scott Tessner.
Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy Wisher and Dennis Hardin.
The family is at the home.
Dorothy L. Lanning
Union native
BLACKSBURG – Dorothy Mae Linder Lanning, 70, of 210 Mountain View Drive, Apt. 164, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at her home.
A native of Union, she was the widow of Earl Leroy Lanning Sr. and daughter of the late Talmadge Melvin Linder and the late Corean White Linder. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving are three daughters, Pamela Mae Leonard and Melissa Jenell Lanning, both of Blacksburg, and Cathy Diane Lanning of Asheville, N.C.; three sons, Donald Wayne Lanning and Ronald Duane Lanning, both of Blacksburg, and Earl LeRoy Lanning Jr. of Hendersonville, N.C.; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Lanning was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Melvin Lanning; a daughter, Joann Lanning; and a grandson, Timothy Lanning.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Oakland cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Grady Gregory and Diane Lanning.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Spake, Robbie Toney, Jack Elliott, Chris Carroll, Rod Allen and Raymond Morgan.
The family will receive friends any time after 10 a.m. today at Mrs. Lanning’s residence.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cherokee County, 407 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

Alexander D. Newman
GREER – Master Alexander Douglas Newman, infant son of Jeffrey Wayne and Margaret “Meg” Upchurch newman of 109 Bushberry Way, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at St. Francis Women’s and Family Hospital, Greenville.
Surviving in addition to his parents are maternal grandparents, Gary A. and Dianne Hardin Upchurch of Blacksburg; paternal grandparents, Daniel “Sonny” and Kaye Carter Douglas of Gaffney; maternal great-grandmother, Margaret Hardin; paternal great-grandparents, Henry and Bernice Carter McDaniel of Blacksburg.
Master Newman is also survived by his maternal aunt and uncle, Amanda and Steve Grigg of Gaffney; paternal aunt and uncle, Angie and Dean Etters of Chester; cousins, Tristan and Carson Grigg; Krista, Jeremy and Kaylee Etters; and a very large extended family.
Master Newman was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, Thomas and Margaret Moss Upchurch and Henry Hardin.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m., cryptside, at Clingman Memorial Gardens, with Mr. Cecil Martin and the Rev. Alton Martin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Upstate South Carolina, 37 Villa Road, B-111, Greenville, S.C. 29615; and the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, S.C. 29615.

BLACKSBURG – Services for Lelia G. Covington, 67, of 250 Borders Road, widow of Johnson Covington Sr., will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Youngs Grove Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Larry J. Brooks and the Rev. George Kirby. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:30 p.m. until the hour of service.
Pallbearers will be the deacons and trustees of Youngs Grove Baptist Church and flower bearers will be the church's Missionary and Sisters in Christ.

Arthur Mae Davis
Services for Arthur Mae "Cookie" Davis, 69, of Connecticut Village, Apt. 7, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Youngs Grove Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Larry J. Brooks. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
The family is at Apt. 50, Connecticut Village.

Nellie B. Stein
Retired from Limestone Manufacturing Company
Nellie Mae Byers Stein, 76, of 510 Thompson St., Brookview HealthCare Center, died Monday, Aug 2, 2004, at 2:05 p.m. at Brookview. She was the widow of Sammie Stein.
Daughter of the late Nathaniel Leach and the late Mae Violet Byers, she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Vinnie Byars Circle. She was retired from Limestone Manufacturing Company.
Surviving are two stepsons, Tony Ross and Raven Ross of Gaffney; five sisters, Elwillie Belton of Elgin whom she reared as a daughter, Mary Violet Dawkins, Clara Smedley, Mae Edna Newson and Minnie Hush of Gaffney.
The family is at the home of her sister, Mary Violet Dawkins, 609 Davis St.
