Martha M. Riddle
Gaffney native

REDFORD, Mich. Martha L. Morgan Riddle, 49, wife of Kenneth K. Riddle, died Friday, April 30, 2004. A native of Gaffney she was the daughter of Louesther C. Morgan and the late Rev. P. Weldon Morgan who was pastor of Hebron Baptist Church in Union for six years. In addition to her husband and mother she is survived by a step-daughter, Brandi Crane and a grandson, Tyler Crane of Redford, Mich.; a brother, Jerry L. Morgan; a sister-in-law, Sherri L. Morgan and a nephew, Zachary M. Morgan, all of Gaffney.

The family is at the home of Jerry and Sherri Morgan, 105 Cameron Lane, Gaffney. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 7 until 8 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grassy Pond Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Roger Aycock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alline M. Jacques
Retired RN PACOLET

Alline Minton Jacques, 66, of Churchwoods Apts., Lexington, widow of Franklin D. Jacques, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 4:02 a.m. in Lexington Medical Center. Mrs. Jacques was born in Pacolet on Nov. 17, 1937, a daughter of the late Henry R. Minton and Lila Kirby Minton. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Columbia and was a retired registered nurse.

Surviving are a daughter, Leah J. Rivas of Lexington; two sons, F. Dennis Jacques of Spartanburg and Terry D. Jackques of Columbia; two sisters, Pauline M. Jenkins of Pacolet and Sara M. Hall of Bellville, Mich.; a brother, David Minton of Pacolet and three grandchildren, Tabitah Jacques, Maria Rivas and Lindsey Rivas.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pacolet First Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Larry W. Bost. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jerry O. Sweatt

Jerry O. Sweatt, 65, husband of Joann Smith Sweatt of 308 Airport Road, died Sunday morning, May 4, 2003, in Duke Medical Center, Durham, N.C. Also surviving are two sons, Tim Sweatt of Rock Hill and Jeff Sweatt of Valdosta, Ga.; and four grandchildren. The family is at the home, 308 Airport Road. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Solomon E. Harris
Retired from Piedmont Gas Co.

PACOLET MILLS Solomon E. Harris, 102, formerly of Pacolet Mills, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at White Oak Manor. Born Sept.15, 1901, in Yancey County, N.C., he was the son of the late Jack and Sally Hyelman Harris. He was first married to the late Minnie Franklin Harris and then to the late Annie Bell Brinkley Harris. He was retired from Piedmont Gas Co. and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy of Pacolet.

Survivors include a son, Carl Jack Harris of Pacolet; two daughters, Eloise Blanchard of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Juanita Fowler of Pacolet Mills; a brother, Archie (Buddy) Harris of Pacolet; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7 until 9 tonight at Floyd's Pacolet Chapel.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at White Rose Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Harold Patton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Boulevard, Suite 101, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301. Maslean Greer Smith, formerly of Bison Street, Union, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, in Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, N.J. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Michael A. Glenn Funeral Home, Spartanburg.

J.O. Eubanks
Former deputy sheriff

James O. Eubanks, 91, of Winston Salem, N.C., a former resident of Buffalo, died Monday, May 5, 2003, in the Oaks at Forsyth in Winston Salem after an extended illness. Mr. Eubanks was born in Buffalo on Sept. 21, 1911, a son of the late Warren and Bertie Brewington Eubanks.

He as a member of Putman Baptist Church. Mr. Eubanks was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired Union County Deputy Sheriff. He was first married to the late Tressie Lankford Eubanks. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are his wife, Nervielee Turner Eubanks of Union; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. James E. Eubanks and wife Patricia of Advance, N.C. with whom Mr. Eubanks made his home for the past three years and Darrell Eubanks and wife Pati of Palatka, Fla.; a step-son, Tommy Adams of Roebuck; a step-daughter, Mary Inglett of Union; two special care givers, Anda Latke and Susan Aldish; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jamie Eubanks, Lance Eubanks, Gary Harris, Wade Besherse, Jerry Burgess and Wayne Barnett. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of Doris Sprouse, 104 Drugstore St., Buffalo. Flowers are accepted but memorials may be made to Putman Baptist Church, 3692 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jerry O. Sweatt
Retired from Lockhart Power

Jerry O. Sweatt, 65, loving husband, father and friend, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Duke Hospital, Durham, N.C. following a brief illness. A native of Kannapolis, N.C., he was the son of the late Raleigh and Ruby Smart Sweatt. Jerry received a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University.

He retired from Milliken & Co. Lockhart power plant after 40 years of service. Jerry served faithfully as a member of the Building Committee, Music Search Committee, the Adult Choir and Praise Team and was a Deacon of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 40 years, JoAnn Smith Sweatt, two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy Jerry Sweatt and wife Melia of Rock Hill; Jeffrey Newton Sweatt and wife Lynn of Yaldosta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Callie Grace Sweatt of Rock Hill, and Shelley D. Sweatt, Rebecca M. Sweatt and Amanda L. Evans of Valdosta, Ga.; three sisters and husbands, Darolene and Earl Cline; Lujean and Edward Faggart of Kannapolis, N.C., and Joyce Morales of Miaguez, Puerto Rico; two brothers and wives, Paul and Shirley Sweatt of Chesterfield and Jackie and Sue Sweatt of Las Vegas, Nev; and many more cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Mike Moody, the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Gideon Long. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gadens. Active pallbearers will be Brown Fant, Maurice Bevis, Tommy Anthony, Les Anderson, Lynn Mitchell, Jim Seay, Wilbur Smith III and Benji Reynolds.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: All Milliken & Co. associates and former associates; employees of Lockhart Power Plant and the Pea Ridge Boys (James Coffer, Terry Young, Dr. Tom Young and Doug Howard), and members of the Wilbur Smith Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends at Tabernacle Baptist Church tonight from 7 until 8:30.

The body will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hours of service. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379 or to a charity of one's choice. The family is at the home, 308 Airport Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral home has charge of arrangements.

Bertha W. Haney

Bertha Savannah Wells Haney, 74, of 296 Meansville Road, Union, widow of William J. Haney, died Thursday morning at 7:24 in White Oak Manor in Spartanburg. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Bertha Savannah Haney, 74, formerly of 296 Meansville Road, Union, widow of William J. Haney, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at 7:24 a.m. in White Oak Manor in Spartanburg. Mrs. Haney was born in Canton, N.C. on Oct. 10, 1929, a daughter of the late Robert and Rosie Trull Wells. She was a member of Putman Baptist Church and was retired from Her Majesty.

Surviving are a daughter, Penny Hopper of Chesnee; two sons, Harold Wells of Union and Billy Haney of Campobello; two brothers, Mingus Wells of Canton, N.C. and Irvin Wells of Blairsville, Ga.; three sisters, Belle Wells and Hazel Wells, both of Canton, N.C. and Connie Hayes of Stewart, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Danny Ray Haney, Ricky Haney, Alfred Haney, Ken Henderson, Homer Solesbee, Dan Williford and Jackie Petty. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at noon Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter, Penny Hopper, 312 S. Georgia Ave., Chesnee. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 1111 W. O. Ezell Blvd, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301. The S.R. Marjorie V. Quinn

Marjorie V. Quinn, 80, widow of Curtis A. Quinn, died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 9:30 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Maslean G. Smith
Union County native

NEWARK, N.J. Maslean Greer Smith, 105, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, in Newark, N.J. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Josephine Greer and widow of Sonny Smith. She was a member of McBeth Baptist Church. She was predeceased by a son, Nathaniel Lyles Sr.

Survivors include a son, Willie Murphy of Spartanburg, 19 grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. On her 99th birthday, she received greetings from then President and Mrs. Bill Clinton and Sen. Ernest F. Hollings. She was acknowledged and wished happy birthday by Smuckers and by Willard Scott of the Today Show, as one of 10 people 100 years of age and over.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 4 p.m. at McBeth Baptist Church by the Rev. Malachi C. Duncan. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. to await the hour of service. Viewing will be held at the Lewis Funeral Home, 1247 S. Duncan Bypass today after 7:30 p. m. and again on Saturday prior to the service. The Michael A. Glenn Funeral Home of Spartanburg has charge of arrangements.
