Mary C. Wettig
Sister of Gaffney resident
Mary Wettig, 89, a recent resident of Rivera Assisted Living, Daytona Beach, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, in Florida.
Mrs. Wettig was the widow of John Wettig and was formerly married
to the now late John S. Clary. She was the daughter of the late Wade Frank Gilfillan and the late Dora Troutman Gilfillan.
Surviving are two sons, John Paul Clary of Bryson City, N.C., and David Clary of Homestead, Fla.; a daughter, Melinda Becker of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Isabelle Kelly of Fayetteville, N.C., and Grace G. Cobb of Gaffney; a brother, Carlton Gilfillan of Cary, N.C.; 13 grandchildren and 16-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Gilfillan of Newberry.
Memorials services will be held in Florida at a later date.
Yul Lamar Black
Blacksburg High graduate
Yul Lamar Black, 36, of 158 Black Road, Blacksburg, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, in Blacksburg.
A native of High Point, N.C., he was the son of Mamie Black Roseboro of Blacksburg.
He was a graduate of Blacksburg High School.
He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and attended Indian Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Yul Lamar Black II and Jacob Dean Black, both of Gaffney; a stepfather Sam Roseboro of Blacksburg; one brother, Patrick Roseboro of Shelby, N.C.; two sisters, Latasha Roseboro and Christina Roseboro, both of Shelby; maternal grandmother, Eliza Black of Blacksburg; and paternal grandmother, Euzelia Roseboro of Shelby.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Gilmore Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Mary Jefferies officiating assisted by the Rev. Willie Woods.
The Gilmore Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Gaffney native
PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Charles Bonner, 50, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
A native of Gaffney, he was the son of J.L. (Mossie) Jefferies and the late Willie Mae Bonner.
In addition to his father, he is survived by a stepmother Martha R. Jefferies of Gaffney; three daughters, Cherainah Bonner of Sarasota, Fla., Terra Simpson and Tiffany Simpson, both of Pittsburgh; two sons, Charles Gilmore of Atlanta and Darnell Bonner of Pittsburgh; six sisters, Lynn Brown, Michelle Wilson, Gayle Carnell, Sheila Miller, Eartha Robbs and Lori Jefferies, all of Gaffney; two brothers, Steve Robbs and Ricky Robbs, both of Gaffney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Odell Robinson Funeral Home in Pittsburgh.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ruth Henderson Underwood, 77, of 814 Rabbit Moffitt Road, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at the Hospice House in Forest City, N.C.
A native of Spartanburg County, she was the widow of Wayman M. Underwood and daughter of the late Virgil and Hattie Hall Henderson.
She was a homemaker and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxilliary Chesnee Post and of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Judy D. Davis of Union Mills, N.C., Patricia Turner of Chesnee, and Robin L. Thompson of Bakersfield, Calif.
Five sisters, Alice Holcombe of Chesnee, Dene Hayes of Ventura, Calif., Jessie Keeter of Virginia, Margaret Scruggs of Sumter, Gayle Sprouse of Chesnee.
Two brothers, Hubert Henderson of Chesnee and Harold Henderson of Ellenboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Michael Zittel, Mark Zittel, Lisa Vickers, Jason Turner, Ashley Turner, Stephanie Thompson, Jennifer Thompson, five greatgrandchildren, Casey Vickers, Misty Bishop, Brittany Henderson, Seth Henderson, and Tyler Zittel; three stepgrandchildren, Magan, Morgan, and Jessie; an uncle Ernest Robbins of Chesnee; and a special friend, Bobby Donald of Chesnee.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. today at the Eggers Funeral Home in Chesnee.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. They will be conducted by the Rev. Sam Henderson.
Burial will follow in the Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Pat Turner, 814 Rabbit Moffitt Road in Chesnee.

Retired from Textile Industry
Ernest Claude Garner, 79, of 207 Brookwood Drive, Gaffney, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Woodruff Manor in Woodruff.
A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of the late Evelyn Frances Thornton Garner and the son of the late Joe Garner and the late Nellie Ball Garner.
He was retired from the textile industry and a member of White Plains Baptist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a Freemason and a member of Gaffney Lodge #186.
He is survived by his three daughters, Patricia Crocker, Linda Wilson and Judy Anders of Westminster; one sister, Annie Bell Fowler; one brother, Henry Garner of Gastonia, N.C.; five grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
The family is at 207 Brookwood Drive.
Thomas A. Pettit
Retired owner of Pettit Electric Service
Thomas Anthony Pettit, 82, of 1112 Floyd Baker Blvd., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at his residence.
A native of Gaffney, he was the son of the late Edmund Pettit and the late Annie Anthony Pettit. He was retired owner and operator of Pettit Electric Service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Pettit was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a life deacon. He was a longtime supporter of the Limestone College Saints' sports programs and was inducted into the Limestone College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Surviving are a sister, Anne Pearce of Lithonia, Ga.; five nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the residence.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Hopper Sunday School Class and deacons of First Baptist Church and the coaches and staff of Limestone College.

Jack D. Fowler
Served in Pacific Theatre during World War II
CHESNEE - Jack Dempsey Fowler, 72, of 335 New Pleasant Road, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at his home.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Imogene Lamb Fowler and son of the late James Elford and Janie Mathis Fowler. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a retired employee of Duke Power, a member of VFW Post 3447 in Gaffney, Chesnee Masonic Lodge Post 294 and New Pleasant Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a brother, Victor Eugene Fowler of Gaffney; a half-sister, Frances Feroline Oliver of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Pleasant Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. George Holland and Joey Turner. Burial was in the church cemetery.

George Charles Barben, 54, of 251 Lake Tree Road, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Staten Island, N.Y., he was the husband of Brenda "Nickie" Moore Barben and son of George Joseph Barben and Dorothy Barben of Broadalbin, N.Y. He was a salesman and member of Pacolet Road Baptist Church. He was an ordained minister, an educator, and enjoyed playing golf.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a son, Brian Parker of Gaffney; three daughters, April Parker Moss of Cowpens, Holly Barben and April Barben, both of Florida; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Loretta Hoyt of Broadalbin, N.Y.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Pacolet Road Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Jimmy Powell and Benny Davis. Entombment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Vince Moore, Jeremy Martin, Robbie Clary, Johnny Mac Brown Sr., Terry Martin and Robert Harris.
The family is at the residence.

John Henry Shelton, 63, of 294 Pondfield Road, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.
A native of Chester, he was the husband of Vickie Hughey Shelton and son of the late Henry Brown Shelton and the late Ada Putnam Shelton. He attended Kirby Memorial Baptist Church and was a carpenter and a veteran.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Johnny Shelton, Kenneth Shelton, Mark Shelton and Scott Shelton, all of Gaffney; two daughters, Darla Ann Taylor of Gaffney and Jesika Shelton Caggiano of the home; four brothers, George Shelton, Jack Shelton, Bob Shelton, all of Gaffney, and Buddy Shelton of Goose Creek; and five grandchildren, Thomas D. Taylor Jr., Krystal Shelton, Victoria Shelton, Nikol Taylor and Haven Shelton.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Shelton, and four sisters, Margie Lucas, Betty Byrd, Velma Ramsey and Maphry Weaver.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, conducted by the Revs. David Scruggs and Gregg Martin. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church cemetery. Body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Gordon Mortuary and at other times they will be at 2473 Wilkinsville Hwy., Gaffney.
Pallbearers will be Randy Watters Sr., Arthur Frady, Scott Ramsey, Clyde Mullinax, Keith Ramsey, Gil Ramsey and George Shelton.
Honorary pallbearer will be Billy Bolin.
