DARLINGTON — Funeral services for William Paul Triplett Sr., 79, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, in First Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Triplett died Tuesday, Dec. 31. He was born in Wilkes County, N.C., a son of the late Joel Enoch and Vivian Barnett Triplett. He was in the 1944 class of Clemson College, leaving to serve his country with the United States Army, 11th Airborne Division, serving in the Philippines and Japan. He was chairman of the Board of Chesterfield Lumber Company. He was a member of Darlington Kiwanis Club, Darlington Country Club, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betsy Jordan Triplett of Darlington; his sons and daughter–in–law, William Paul Bill (Barbara) Triplett, Jr. of Florence; three daughters and sons–in–law, Georgiana (Thomas) Nolen of Charleston, Linda T. (Harry) Huggins of Sanford, N.C. and Elizabeth Libby T. (William) C. Hightower of Moncks Corner; grandchildren, Betsy, Nancy and Tommy Nolen, Joshua Huggins, Lt. USN and Gretchen (Wes) Haynes, William, Jr. and Russell Hightower, Paul, III and Allison Triplett; and a sister, Mrs. J. W. Pusser of Florence.
Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 297, Darlington, S.C. 29540 and the Leukemia Society of America, 1248 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, SC 29063.
J. C. BAREFOOT
PATRICK — Funeral services for J. C. Barefoot, 85, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Jan. 3, 2003, from the Cedar Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Barefoot died Wednesday, Jan. 1. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Henry P. and Janie Jones Barefoot. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company, a member of the Old Timers Club, Sumter Full Gospel Church.
Surviving are his three daughters, Alicia Ann Perdue, Eleanor Gainey and Teresa Brigman, all of Patrick; three sons, William Glen and George W. Barefoot of Hartsville and James D. Barefoot of Patrick; two brothers, Morgan Barefoot of Patrick and Junior Barefoot of Chesterfield; two sisters, Lucille Isgett and Edna Lynch, of Hartsville; 14 grandchildren; 20 great–grandchildren and one great–great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Gainey.
CATHERINE HOLLINGSWORTH
Funeral services for Catherine Hollingsworth, 76, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 3, 2003, from the Pine Ridge Congregational Holiness Church with the Rev. Ricky Bledsoe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hollingsworth, widow of Rev. J. C. Hollingsworth, died Tuesday, Dec. 31. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Caleb and Daisy Jernigan Lynch.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Dalrymple of Kernersville, N.C.; three sons, James Hollingsworth of Lexington, N.C., Earnest Hollingsworth, Hartsville and Donnie Hollingsworth of McBee; three sisters, Frances Powell, Janie Sue Brigman and Ruth Teal, of Rockingham, N.C.; five brothers, Jimmy, Vander, Johnny, Ray, Claude Lynch of Rockingham, N.C.; and 18 grandchildren.
CHARLES DIXON
Funeral services for Charles Walter Dixon, 61, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2003, at the Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Marvin Griggs and Harold Collins will officiate with burial in Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery. Mr. Dixon died Monday, Dec. 30. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of Ella Barefoot Dixon and the late Caulie W. Dixon.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Watford Dixon of Hartsville; son, Charles Michael Dixon of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Angie and David A. Case of Hartsville; mother of Hartsville; sisters, Shelby Roberts of Lancaster, Sylvia Byrd of Hartsville, Barbara Smith of Hartsville, Wanda Dixon of Hartsville, Wynette Jordan of Hartsville; brother, Edward Allen Dixon of Hartsville; grandchildren, Anthony Case, Danny Case, Curt Dixon, Ashley Dixon. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Watford.
SADIE MACK
Sadie Mack died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence after an illness. Funeral arrangements to be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 109 Lawton Dr., Hartsville.
CHARLES BRUNSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Charles Brunson, 77, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at New Hopewell Baptist Church in Society Hill with the Rev. Calvin Daniels, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with all services entrusted to the efficiency of Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence of his wife, Katie Brunson of 3250 New Hopewell Rd.
Mr. Brunson died Saturday, Dec. 28, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Brunson and Ollie Bell Smith Brunson. He was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County and served in the United States Army during WWII and was honorably discharged. He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church where he sang on the Gospel Chorus and the Men's Chorus.
Survivors include his wife, Katie Brunson of Darlington; three sons, Charles (Yvonne) Brunson Jr., Cleveland L. Brunson and James (Doreen) Brunson, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Walter Brunson and Larry Brunson, and seven grandchildren.
ELLIE MAE ROGERS
Funeral services for Ellie Mae Galloway Rogers, 94, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Surrett will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service at Magnolia cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 East College Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Rogers, widow of Walter Gandy (Piggy) Rogers, died Thursday, January 2, 2003. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late James Pinckney and Maggie Apple Galloway. Mrs. Rogers was educated in the Timmonsville City Schools and attended Florence Business School. She was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she was the pianist for the men's Sunday school class for over 50 years. She was a member of the McIntosh Sunday school class and was active in circles and other church groups. Mrs. Rogers was a life–long member of the Hartsville Pilot Club with a 50–year perfect attendance record. She worked a number of years with the Hartsville Print & Dye Works, served as the secretary to the Carolina Elementary School Principal, retired from the South Carolina Education System in 1980, and was a member of the Darlington County Retired Education Association.
Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Peggy Rogers and Jim Neighbors of Beaufort; grandchildren, Susan Neighbors McLemore of Beaufortt, James D. Neighbors, Jr. of Washington, Va., Beth Rogers Maust of Matthews, N.C., Rebecca Rogers Taft of Hartsville; 5 great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son James Rogers, and her sister Margaret Gaskins.
ROSA LEE FRAZIER
Rosa Lee (Dorothy) Frazier died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements to be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 511 Russell Road.
OLIVIA JONES
Funeral services for Olivia Jones, 53, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 3, 2003, at the Church of Christ in Effingham with brother T. J. Harris, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with all services entrusted to the efficiency of Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville.
Ms. Jones was the daughter of the late John Wesley Lewis and Leatha Mingo Lewis. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Effingham.
Survivors include her husband, Butler Jones of New York, N.Y., and two sisters, Cheryl (Deon) Woods and Betty Lewis, both of Hartsville.
ALICE ISAAC
Alice Isaac, 59, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003 at her residence. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
CALVIN ROBINSON
McBEE — Funeral services for Calvin Robinson, 55, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Bethel Baptist Church in Bethune with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Robinson died Tuesday, Dec. 31, at his residence. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Thomas James and Maggie Ellerbe Robinson Sr. He was a graduate of Pines Forest High School. At an early age, he was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and later in life he joined Bethel Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Vernell Johnson Robinson of McBee; two daughters, Gloria (Rev. Gerald) Searles of Charlotte, N.C. and Mary Wright of McBee; two sons, Ronald Robinson of Portsmouth, Va. and Bernard (Barbara) Robinson of McBee; two sisters, Ruthie Graham of Philadelphia, Pa. and Dorothy (Charlie) Sutton of McBee; a brother, Thomas James Robinson Jr. of McBee; a God–sister, Wendy (Rodney) Thompson of Kershaw; eight grandchildren, Tevin, Ashley, Christian, Sharanna, Calvin, Tyler, Brandon and Bernard; four aunts; two uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
CORNELIUS BLUE
McBEE — Funeral services for Cornelius Blue, 62, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Pines Forest Memorial cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Blue died Monday, Dec. 30, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was the son of Ora Davenport Jackson and the late Kirven Blue.
Mr. Blue received his education at A. T. Wright High School in White Stone, Va. He was employed with the Baltimore City Housing Authority for several years as a painter. In 1972 he relocated to McBee and was employed with DuPont in Camden until his retirement in 1992.
Surviving other than his mother of Baltimore, Md. are his wife, Mary Alice Rodgers Blue of McBee; a daughter, Keisha Blue of McBee; two sons, Cornelius (Memrie) Blue Jr. of Pine Ridge and Eric Blue of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Jurneee and Jordyn Blue both of McBee, Sarai, Rachel, Eden and Thomas Blue of Pine Ridge and Monica Springs of Sumter; five foster brothers and sisters, Shelia (Terry) Dennis of Baltimore, Md., Laura Davenport of Philadelphia, Pa., Ann Robinson of McBee, William (Verlita) Ball of White Stone, Va. and Clinton Burrell of Louisville, Ky. and other close relatives and friends.
KARL CARPENTER
FAIRFAX, Va. — Karl Frederick Carpenter, 89, died Nov. 27, 2002, at Inova Fairfax Hospital of injuries suffered in a traffic accident.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Hartsville. He graduated from The Citadel. Mr. Carpenter was a controller with the Agency for International Development, and retired in 1979. During World War II, he served in the Armed Forces in North Africa and Italy.
In 1948, in New York, he married
Gioconda Lambias, a resident of Salerno, Italy, he had met during the war and with whom he had corresponded for two years. They lived for several years in Hartsville, where Mr. Carpenter was a partner and treasurer in the Joy Silk Mill.
In the late 1950s, Mr. Carpenter joined AID. He was a finance officer in South Vietnam, Morocco, Tunisian, Guinea, Sengegal, Cambodia and El Salvador before retiring.
In addition to his wife, of Fairfax, survivors include two children, Luana Carpenter of Biloxi, Miss., and Thomas F. Carpenter of Great Falls.
ALICE M. ISAAC
Funeral services for Alice Marie Isaac, 59, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 in Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. David A. Dickey, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Isaac died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Lillie Mae Stevenson Isaac and the late Edmund Isaac Sr. She was a 1961 graduate of Butler High School and was employed with Dickey's Motel, 5th Street Cleaners and Sara Lee Hosiery.
Survivors include her mother of Hartsville; a son, Carl (Angela) Isaac Sr. of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Cedric, Chantelle and Carl Jr.; three sisters, Sarah Anna Isaac of Lake View, Margaree (Jimmy) McFarland of Hartsville and Sara Waiters of Florence; four brothers, Edmund Isaac, George Franklin Isaac and Leroy Isaac, all of Hartsville and Bennie Waiters of Florence; three aunts, Ruth (Henry) Dickey and Naomi F. Stevenson, both of Hartsville and Alma Stevenson of Boston, Mass., a devoted cousin Mattie Knight; nieces, nephews, neighbors and co–workers.
LUCILLE W. CHANDLER
LAMAR — Graveside funeral services for Lucille Windham Chandler, 88, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 8, 2003, in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Chandler died Monday, Jan. 6, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Maxie and Eva Windham. She was married
to the late Robert D. Chandler and was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening.
She was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Don Chandler of Lamar; three grandchildren, R. D. (Elaine) Chandler, Teresa (Timmy) Windham and Wayne (Karen) Chandler and also five great–grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to Lamar Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 114, Lamar, SC 29069.
MILDRED J. STEPHENS
Funeral services for Mildred Johnson Stephens, 62, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 8, 2003, from the North Hartsville Baptist Church. The Revs. Ladell Humphries, Grove Johnson, Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Stephens, widow of John Allen Stephens, died Jan. 5. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Jesse C. & Ethel Easterling Johnson. She was a member of the North Hartsville Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter and son–in–law, Lisa and Allen Gardner of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Kirk Allen and Sheila Stephens of Patrick; four grandchildren, Alana and Kali Gardner of Hartsville and John and Donald Stephens of Patrick; two sisters, Mary Ethel Gainey and Helen Barefoot, both of Hartsville; two brothers, William Jesse Johnson and Billy Johnson, also of Hartsville.
