Edwin Bailey
Retired from Burlington Industries

Charles Edwin Bailey, 74, husband of Jo Carter Jeter Bailey of 3024 Santuc-Carlisle Highway died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at 7:58 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Bailey was born in Union County on Oct. 8, 1928, a son of the late Wilson and Eva Farr Bailey. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as elder of the church, a member and former president of the Union Lions Club and a former member of the Greensboro Civitan Club.

Mr. Bailey was a graduate of Lockhart High School and the University of South Carolina and was retired from Burlington Industries in Greensboro. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Bailey was first married to the late Hazel Worthy Bailey of Lockhart.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Steve Minor of Greensboro; two step-daughters and their husbands, Donna and Thomas Gelwicks of Charleston and Elizabeth and William Bean of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers and their wives, William and Emily Bailey of Greenville and Jack and Janice Bailey of Mt. Tabor; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday night from 7 until 9. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Vera Johnson Gallman
Union County native

LAKELAND, Fla. Vera Johnson Gallman, 84, of Lakeland, Fla., died Wedmesday, April 16, 2003. Mrs. Gallman was born and raised in Union, a daughter of J. F. Johnson and Annie Mae Orr Johnson Jolly. She was a graduate of Union High School and a former member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harry E. Gallman of Lakeland; a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne Addy and George Addy of Lakeland; a sister, Sarah Johnson Holloman of Gaffney; two grandchildren, Mark Addy of Metairie, La., and Marci Steele of Shawnee, Kan., three great-grandchildren, Price and Allison Addy and Chase Steele; and a niece and four nephews.

Robert Spencer
Union native

AUSTIN, Texas Robert Spencer, 52, formerly of Union, a resident of Austin, Texas, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Austin. Mr. Spencer was born in Union on May 8, 1950, a son of the late Virginia Simmons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Spencer was retired from the commercial construction industry.

Surviving are a daughter, Rhonda S. Pridemore, and a son, Wayne Spencer, both of Spartanburg; and two grandsons, Blake and Jesse Powers of Spartanburg. At this time no funeral services will be held. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Marjorie V. Quinn
Hendersonville native

Marjorie V. Quinn, 80, widow of Curtis A. Quinn, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at 9:30 p.m. at Oakmont Nursing Home. Mrs. Quinn was born in Hendersonville, N.C., on July 30, 1923, a daughter of the late Mott L. Tweed. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Dennis D. Trotter and Larry W. Trotter, both of Woodruff; a daughter, Sandra J. Elliot of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Evelyn Gwinn and Ella Mae Brice of Spartanburg and Mary Atkins of Orangeburg; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Sunday from 4 until 5:30 p.m. The family will be at their respective homes. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

David Rice
Retired from Union School system

David Rice, 82, of 295 E. Pearl St., Spartanburg, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at White Oak Manor in Spartanburg. Mr. Rice was born in Goshen Hill on Aug. 29, 1921, a son of the late Giles and Ella Hampton Rice. He was a member of McBeth Baptist Church, the St. Paul Adult Daycare Center and Cornwell Methodist Church. He was a retired maintenance employee of the Union County School system.

Surviving are a brother, William Rice of Union; and two sisters, Genevia Rice Tucker of Union and Annie B. Rice Bradford of Jersey City, N.J. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Union Community Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. A.L. Brackett.

Burial will be in Beatty's Chapel Church. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Visitation will be until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family is at 119 Willow Lane, Union. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Bailey, Mike Bailey, Keith Bailey, Ryan Bean, Thomas Gelwicks Jr. and Wilbur F. Smith III. The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 10:15 a.m. to form the honorary escort: William Bean III, Sammy Smith, Ben Black, Sammy Webber and Doug Barnes. The family is at the home, 3024 Santuc-Carlisle Highway and will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 until 9.

The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 101 West South St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Torrance F. Vanderford
World War II veteran

LOCKHART Torrence F. Vanderford, 85, of 205 South 3rd St., Lockhart, died at his home at an early hour Friday, May 9, 2003, after several years of declining health. Mr. Vanderford was born in Lockhart on Feb. 21, 1918, a son of the late W.M. and Lucille Inman Vanderford. He was a member and former deacon of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church and was a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge. Mr. Vanderford was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was retired from Conso Products.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Morris Vanderford of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence L. and Jackie H. Vanderford of Union; a grandson, Lemond Vanderford of Union; two great-grandchildren, Kayla Vanderford and Caleb Vanderford of Union; and a brother, Charles Vanderford of Lockhart.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers and Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in the Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Paul Burgess Jr., Gerald Smallwood, Logan Vanderford, Rick McCloud, Roger Vanderford and Danny Vanderford. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday where the family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.

The family is at the home, 205 South 3rd St., Lockhart. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Gladys B. McCollum
Homemaker

Gladys Busby McCollum, 95, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, widow of Furman McCollum, died Sunday, May 9, 2004. Mrs. McCollum was born in Laurens, April 7, 1909, a daughter of the late Will and Mary Wiggins Busby. She was a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Maurice McCollum of Tulsa, Okla., two granddaughters, Diana Newcombe of Conway, Ark., and Cherl Howery of Tulsa, Okla.., a grandson, Ross McCollum of Pineville, N.C., and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bushey Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilksburg by the Rev. Alan Quarrels. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Maslean G. Smith
Union County native

NEWARK, N.J. Maslean Greer Smith, 105, died May 4, 2004 in Newark, N.J. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Josephine Greer and widow of Sonny Smith. She was a member of McBeth Baptist Church. She was predeceased by a son, Nathaniel Lyles Sr.

Survivors include a son, Willie Murphy of Spartanburg, 19 grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. On her 99th birthday, she received greetings from then President and Mrs. Bill Clinton and Sen. Ernest F. Hollings. She was acknowledged and wished happy birthday by Smuckers and by Willard Scott of the Today Show, as one of 10 people 100 yeas of age and over.

Funeral services were conducted at McBeth Baptist Church Saturday by the Rev. Malachi C. Duncan. Burial was in the church cemetery. Viewing and visitation was held at the Carolina Mortuary. The family is at the home, 101 Buffalo St., Union. The Carolina Mortuary had charge of the arrangements.
