Funeral services for Hazel Littles, 46, were held at 2 p.m Saturday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Littles, died Monday, Jan. 6, in McLeod Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Jacob and Robertha Woodham Littles. He was a graduate of Butler High School and a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
Surviving other than his father and mother of Hartsville are four children, Shaquetta, Chaquanda, Shaquan and Savion Bennett, all of Hartsville; two step–children, Shannon Johnson of Florida and Nana Graham of Georgia; two sisters, Clestine Littles and Ann (Jourmany) Lighty, both of Hartsville; two brothers, Eugene (Rosa) Littles and Carnell Littles, both of Hartsville; three uncles, Wesley (Elizabeth) Woodham, Strawford (Minnie) Woodham and James (Janie) Woodham, all of Hartsville; two aunts, Anna Mae Wilson of Hartsville and Mollie Littles of Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
EVELYN C. HICKS
LAMAR — Funeral services for Evelyn Carter Hicks, 91, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Lamar United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Melvin Flail and Gary Harrelson. Interment followed in Lamar cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mrs. Hicks, widow of James Willard Hicks, died Wednesday, Jan. 8. She was born in Darlington County. She was a daughter of the late William Colon and Alma Mims Carter. Mrs. Hicks was a member of the Lamar United Methodist Church and the Bernie Joye Sunday School class. Prior to moving to the Methodist Manor, she worked at Larry's Department Store and in the school lunchroom. A daughter, Evelyn Willia–Dene Hicks, predeceased Mrs. Hicks.
Survivors include one son, Kelso (Linda) Hicks of Florence, and one daughter, Lecia Etheridge of Orangeburg; three grandchildren, Lee Hicks, Kimberly J. Fogle and Doniele J. McClung; five great–grandchildren, Heath and Devin Fogle and Shanda, Tamra and Hannah McClung; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Lamar United Methodist Church, PO Box 555, Lamar, SC 29069.
CARRIE H. MOZINGO
DALTON, Ga. — Mrs. Carrie Hodge Mozingo, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the Hamilton Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late James Hodge Sr. and Fannie Chapman Hodge and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Wayne Mozingo, in 1989; her daughter, Rita Mozingo Kirk in 2001; her sisters, Mamie Register, Sarah Middleton, Annie Bell Lee, Susannah Hicks and Evelyn Galloway; and her brother, James Hodge Jr.
Mrs. Mozingo is survived by her daughters and son–law, Shelby Jeanne Mozingo of Chatsworth, Ga., Elaine Mozingo and Jackie Phillips of Dalton, Ga.; grandchildren, Alisa and Mike Ellenburg, Sidney Wayne Phillips, Rene and Alex Brogdon, Pam and Daniel Kendrick, all of Dalton; great–grandchildren, Blake Ellenburg, Brianne Kendrick and Taylor Brogdon, all of Dalton; sisters, Genevieve Sullivan, Katherine Holloman and Frances Odom, all of Hartsville; nieces and nephews also survive.
A private family service and burial took place in Whitefield Memorial Gardens, directed by Love Funeral Home of Dalton, Ga.
KATHLEEN B. PUTNAM
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Kathleen Brown Putnam, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in High Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Putnam died Wednesday, Jan. 8, in a Florence nursing home. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Melvin and Evelita Brown. She was married
to the late Francis Putnam. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Putnam was the founder of the Pee Dee Area Doll Club.
Surviving are two sons, James (Marrianna) Putnam of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Roy (Wanda) Putnam of Darlington; also six grandchildren.
MARY ATKINSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Grice Atkinson, 72, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Atkinson was born in Dillon County, daughter of the late Paul and Nettie Coxe Grice. She was a homemaker and attended Black Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Malcolm N. Atkinson of Darlington; one son, Jimmy L. (Naty) Boykin of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Judy (Teddy) B. Ladnier of Theodore, Ala., and Margie (Gordon) B. Thompson of Darlington; 12 grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; two brothers, James W. Grice and Chesley Grice, both of Latta; one sister, Nell Pittman of Columbia; also special friends, Gene and Doris O'Neal and Junior and Maybelle Thomas.
Mrs. Atkinson was preceded in death by a son, Marty Boykin; a sister, Amy Parker, and brother, Leroy Grice.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 East Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
HENRY G. WILSON
Funeral services for Henry Grady Wilson, 40, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel. Interment followed in Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Wilson died Friday, Jan. 10, at his residence. He was born May 6, 1962, in Colleton County, and was a son of Paul and Margaret Maxey Wilson. He was a construction worker with Concrete Specialty in Charleston. He was a member of the Lakeview Baptist Church and an avid fisherman.
Surviving are two brothers, Paul Wilson Jr. and David Stanley Wilson; two sisters, Ottie Ruth Wilson and Diana Wilson, all of Hartsville; aunts, Ray Martin of North Charleston and Dolly Roberston of Walterboro; nephews, Jonathan Wilson and Shane Wilson; nieces, Holly Vanscoy, Caitlyn Wilson and Jessica Wilson, all of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Brickle.
LUCILLE ROBINSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Lucille Chisholm Robinson, 67, were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Brown Spring Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Robinson died Thursday, Jan. 9. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Everett and Marie Johnson Chisholm. She had retired from James River Corp. and enjoyed fishing and gardening. She attended Swift Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Sylvester O. Robinson of Darlington; one son, O'Neal Robinson of Darlington; two daughters, Cindy (Ricky) Steen of Hartsville and Faye (David) Williamson of Darlington; grandchildren, Catina Gainey, Chip Williamson, Mia Evans, Daniel and Derrick Steen; one brother, Huitt Chisholm of Patrick; one sister, Ruby (J.L.) Huggins of Union; and an aunt, Bessie Brigman of Hartsville.
Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death by two brothers, J. E. and Melvin Chisholm.

LUCIE MAE SPELL
Funeral services for Lucie Mae Gainey Spell, 89, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Amerson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Spell, widow of Callie Eldridge Spell, died Saturday, Jan. 11. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Gilliam and Liddie Dixon Gainey. She was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church and retired from the Hartsville Mill.
Surviving are her son, John E. Spell of Hartsville; three sisters, Alice Blackwell of Chesterfield, Lucille Rogers of McBee and Alama King of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Ann Honeycutt, Debbie Perkins and Chuck Spell, all of Hartsville; five great–grandchildren; and three great–great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Dewey Barefoot; a sister, Margaret Foots; and brothers, Ott, Neal and Dewey Gainey.
WILLIE J. SWINTON
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Willie James Swint Swinton were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor and the Rev. Dr. Luns C. Richardson, president of Morris College, officiated. Burial was at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Swinton died on Thursday, Jan. 9, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Magaline Hammonds and was reared and adopted by Louise Kelly and the late Tommie Kelly.
He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools, graduating from Butler High School.
He served in country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
At an early age, he joined Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. After moving to Mt. Vernon, N.Y., he joined Greater Seminary A.M.E. Church. There, he served on the Male Usher Board. He was employed with Pepe Motors of White Plains, N.Y., from which he retired. He returned to South Carolina in April of 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Zimmermon Swinton of the home; his adopted mother, Lousie Kelly of Darlington; three daughters, Gwendolyn (William) Dancy, Ellen L. Swinton (Edmund L. Johnson) both of Stafford, Va., and Vanessa (Clyde) Thomas of Hartsville; four sons, Jeffrey (Janie) Richardson of Waterboro, S.C., Michael Richardson of Nashville, Tenn., Willie Love and William Pauley, both of Darlington; two sisters, Fannie (Perry) Simon of Darlington, Mamie Kelly of Hartsville; foster sister, Johnnie Mae White; 18 grandchildren; nine great–grandchildren; nieces; nephews; two special cousins, Charlie Mae Luckey and Ernestine Swinton, and other cousins.
Two sons preceded him in death, Donald Swinton and Eddie Richardson.
EUGENE GRIFFIN
Graveside services for Eugene Griffin, 53, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc., directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Griffin died Wednesday, Jan. 8, at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla., after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Willie Mae Griffin Cooper and the late Levander Goodson.
Gene was a graduate of Butler High School. He worked as a supervisor at several companies in South Carolina before relocating to Florida in 1981.
Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are four daughters, Gwendolyn (Calvin) Davis and Gena Griffin, both of Palm Beach, Fla., Jennifer Griffin of Tampa, Fla., and Shirley McCall of Hartsville; two sons, Ronald Eugene (Marcela) Griffin of Fort Benning, Ga., and Robert (Suzette) Griffin of Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Rosa (Levy) Shaw of Turbeville and Pearlie Peterson of Darlington; a brother, Willie James Cooper of Darlington; six grandchildren; and several aunts and uncles.
NATHANIEL THOMAS
Funeral services for Nathaniel Thomas, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Thomas died Friday, Jan. 10, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Dillon County, a son of the late Edward and Ruth Henry Thomas.
He was a member of Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church and Trustee Board.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Robinson Thomas of Hartsville; a daughter, Natalie Thomas of Austin, Texas; a son, Edward F. Thomas of Decatur, Ala.; a sister, Ruth (Ray) Waters of Hartsville.
JACQUELINE STITH
Mrs. Jacqueline Scott Stith, 79, widow of Dr. Julian Dubose Stith, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003.
She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Chandler Maurice and Bernice Odom Scott. Arrangements were made by Norton Funeral Home.
Surviving are one son, Michael Stith; one daughter, Chandler Stith, both of Columbia; and one brother, Samuel Leonard Scott of Bennettsville.
Memorials may be sent to a charity of one's choice.
BESSIE T. NORRIS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Bessie Todd Norris, 97, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003. Burial followed in the Darlington Memory Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Allen Lynch.
Mrs. Norris died Friday, Jan. 10. She was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Martha Todd. She was married
to the late Rufus F. Norris. Mrs. Norris was predeceased by one son, Cecil F. Norris, and two daughters, Kathleen Norris and Opal N. Norris. Mrs. Norris was a member of Vision Assembly in Darlington and taught Sunday school for a number of years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great–grandmother, and great–great–grandmother.
Survivors include two sons, Wade M. Norris of Darlington and Frank H. Norris of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and numerous great and great–grandchildren.
