DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Lucille Chisholm Robinson, 67, were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Brown Spring Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Robinson died Thursday, Jan. 9. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Everett and Marie Johnson Chisholm. She had retired from James River Corp. and enjoyed fishing and gardening. She attended Swift Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Sylvester O. Robinson of Darlington; one son, O'Neal Robinson of Darlington; two daughters, Cindy (Ricky) Steen of Hartsville and Faye (David) Williamson of Darlington; grandchildren, Catina Gainey, Chip Williamson, Mia Evans, Daniel and Derrick Steen; one brother, Huitt Chisholm of Patrick; one sister, Ruby (J.L.) Huggins of Union; and an aunt, Bessie Brigman of Hartsville.
Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death by two brothers, J. E. and Melvin Chisholm.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 East Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.
LUCIE MAE SPELL
Funeral services for Lucie Mae Gainey Spell, 89, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Amerson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Spell, widow of Callie Eldridge Spell, died Saturday, Jan. 11. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Gilliam and Liddie Dixon Gainey. She was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church and retired from the Hartsville Mill.
Surviving are her son, John E. Spell of Hartsville; three sisters, Alice Blackwell of Chesterfield, Lucille Rogers of McBee and Alama King of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Ann Honeycutt, Debbie Perkins and Chuck Spell, all of Hartsville; five great–grandchildren; and three great–great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Dewey Barefoot; a sister, Margaret Foots; and brothers, Ott, Neal and Dewey Gainey.
WILLIE J. SWINTON
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Willie James Swint Swinton were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor and the Rev. Dr. Luns C. Richardson, president of Morris College, officiated. Burial was at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Swinton died on Thursday, Jan. 9, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Magaline Hammonds and was reared and adopted by Louise Kelly and the late Tommie Kelly.
He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools, graduating from Butler High School.
He served in country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
At an early age, he joined Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. After moving to Mt. Vernon, N.Y., he joined Greater Seminary A.M.E. Church. There, he served on the Male Usher Board. He was employed with Pepe Motors of White Plains, N.Y., from which he retired. He returned to South Carolina in April of 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Zimmermon Swinton of the home; his adopted mother, Lousie Kelly of Darlington; three daughters, Gwendolyn (William) Dancy, Ellen L. Swinton (Edmund L. Johnson) both of Stafford, Va., and Vanessa (Clyde) Thomas of Hartsville; four sons, Jeffrey (Janie) Richardson of Waterboro, S.C., Michael Richardson of Nashville, Tenn., Willie Love and William Pauley, both of Darlington; two sisters, Fannie (Perry) Simon of Darlington, Mamie Kelly of Hartsville; foster sister, Johnnie Mae White; 18 grandchildren; nine great–grandchildren; nieces; nephews; two special cousins, Charlie Mae Luckey and Ernestine Swinton, and other cousins.
Two sons preceded him in death, Donald Swinton and Eddie Richardson.
EUGENE GRIFFIN
Graveside services for Eugene Griffin, 53, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc., directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Griffin died Wednesday, Jan. 8, at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla., after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Willie Mae Griffin Cooper and the late Levander Goodson.
Gene was a graduate of Butler High School. He worked as a supervisor at several companies in South Carolina before relocating to Florida in 1981.
Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are four daughters, Gwendolyn (Calvin) Davis and Gena Griffin, both of Palm Beach, Fla., Jennifer Griffin of Tampa, Fla., and Shirley McCall of Hartsville; two sons, Ronald Eugene (Marcela) Griffin of Fort Benning, Ga., and Robert (Suzette) Griffin of Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Rosa (Levy) Shaw of Turbeville and Pearlie Peterson of Darlington; a brother, Willie James Cooper of Darlington; six grandchildren; and several aunts and uncles.
NATHANIEL THOMAS
Funeral services for Nathaniel Thomas, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Thomas died Friday, Jan. 10, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Dillon County, a son of the late Edward and Ruth Henry Thomas.
He was a member of Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church and Trustee Board.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Robinson Thomas of Hartsville; a daughter, Natalie Thomas of Austin, Texas; a son, Edward F. Thomas of Decatur, Ala.; a sister, Ruth (Ray) Waters of Hartsville.
JACQUELINE STITH
Mrs. Jacqueline Scott Stith, 79, widow of Dr. Julian Dubose Stith, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003.
She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Chandler Maurice and Bernice Odom Scott. Arrangements were made by Norton Funeral Home.
Surviving are one son, Michael Stith; one daughter, Chandler Stith, both of Columbia; and one brother, Samuel Leonard Scott of Bennettsville.
Memorials may be sent to a charity of one's choice.
BESSIE T. NORRIS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Bessie Todd Norris, 97, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003. Burial followed in the Darlington Memory Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Allen Lynch.
Mrs. Norris died Friday, Jan. 10. She was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Martha Todd. She was married
to the late Rufus F. Norris. Mrs. Norris was predeceased by one son, Cecil F. Norris, and two daughters, Kathleen Norris and Opal N. Norris. Mrs. Norris was a member of Vision Assembly in Darlington and taught Sunday school for a number of years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great–grandmother, and great–great–grandmother.
Survivors include two sons, Wade M. Norris of Darlington and Frank H. Norris of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and numerous great and great–grandchildren.
BENOIED HYMES SR.
Funeral services for Mr. Benoied Hymes Sr., 66, will be held at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel today, Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. at Florence National cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Hymes died on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, on Oct. 15, 1936, one of eight children to the late William V. Hymes and Lila Mae Grooms Hymes. He was educated in the public schools of the county and after graduation he entered into the United States Air Force, earning the rank of airman second class during his Air Force career. He received the 43rd Bomb Wing Unit Award as well as letters of commendation for outstanding service. After an honorable discharge, he worked several years in the district government and later continued his career in private industry as a master upholsterer until his retirement.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children; David (Eva) Andrews of Brooklyn, N.Y., Darryl (Patricia) Andrews of Columbia, Kevin Hymes of Lamar and Frances (Calvin) Roots of Temple Hills, Md.; one sister, Emily (Odell) Lucas of Mitchellville, Md.; three brothers, Earnest (Mary) Hymes and Wesley (Antoinette) Hymes, both of Washington, D.C., and Rufus (Naomi) Hymes of Manson, N.C.
FRANK JAMES
FAIRMONT, N.C. — Funeral services for Frank Monroe Slim James, 49, formerly of Darlington, will be held at 12:30 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in the Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. B. J. McWhite officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. James died Monday, Jan. 13, in a hospital in Lumberton, N.C., after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Ernest and Emma Joint James.
He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He was a former employee of E. W. Pew Logging Company of Darlington.
For the past several years, he lived in Fairmont, N.C.
Survivors include his ex–wife, Julia James; a son, Frank M. James Jr., both of Florence; five sisters, Lena (Richard) Rumph, Ethel (Roosevelt) Hankins, Rosa James, all of Darlington, Allean Isaac of Florence and Emma Dowe of Sumter; four brothers, Dennis James of Darlington, Richard James of Florence, Ronnie (Debra) James of Jacksonville, N.C., and Willie (Cynthia) James of Atlanta, Ga.; two aunts; one uncle; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
MABEL P. McCASKILL
BETHUNE — Funeral services for Mabel Plyler McCaskill, 88, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Bethune Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Cockrell and Gene Plyler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. McCaskill, widow of Clyde Alton McCaskill, died Wednesday, Jan. 15. She was born in Chesterfield County, the daughter of the late George and Renie Ogburn Plyler. She was a member of Bethune Baptist Church and was retired from Kendall.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Kennington of Cassatt; two grandchildren, Chris Kennington of Hartsville and Renee Blackwell of Bethune; and three great–grandchildren.

RUBY C. EVANS
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Ruby Cowick Evans, 95, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in Grove Hill cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Evans died Sunday, Jan. 19, at Grand Strand Regional Hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late John M. and Florence Cain Cowick Sr. She was married
to the late Raymond L. Evans Sr. Mrs. Evans was a housewife and member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was the oldest member of the church.
Surviving are four grandchildren, Ray (Stacy) Evans of Darlington, Billy (Kathy) Evans of Florence, Pam (Buddy) Gore of Murrells Inlet and Linda Bauer of Sunset Beach, N.C.; seven great–grandchildren; a nephew, Don (Margaret) Tunstall of Darlington and daughter–in–law, Irene Evans of Myrtle Beach.
Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her sons, Raymond L. Evans Jr. and Billy F. Evans.
LINDA H. WOODS
Funeral services for Linda Hickson Woods, 82, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Revs. James E. Beck Jr., Hazel Mixon and W. D. Huneycutt officiated. Burial was in Westview Memorial cemetery.
Mrs. Woods died Sunday, Jan. 19. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Elijah and Zadie Ridgell Hickson. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Frank Woods of Hartsville; two sons, Calvin Woods and Laverne Woods, also of Hartsville; a sister, Merlee Sims of Sardis; three half–brothers, Jack Hickson of Charleston, Pete Hickson of Monroe, N.C., and Sambo Hickson of Timmonsville; six grandchildren and nine great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, W. F. Woods, and a grandson, Cal Woods.

MONROE SULLIVAN
McBEE — Funeral services for Monroe (Boot) Sullivan, 83, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with Dr. Wayne Williams and the Rev. Paul Mitchell officiating. Burial was in McBee cemetery.
Mr. Sullivan died Sunday, Jan. 19. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Robert Lee and Bessie Outlaw Sullivan. He was a member of the Union United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Linnie Steen Sullivan of McBee; a son, Ronnie Monroe (Dick) Sullivan of McBee; two daughters, Sylvia Sullivan of McBee and Brenda Bryson of Bethune; seven grandchildren and 10 great–grandchildren.
