LAMAR — Funeral services for Alvis Cy Lawton Howell, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Newman Swamp United Methodist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Howell died Thursday, Jan. 16. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Lawton and Edna Reynolds Howell. He was a retired farmer and attended Newman Swamp United Methodist Church where he was superintendent of Sunday school for many years and also one of the oldest members of the church.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Nora Emma O. Howell of Lamar; two daughters, Sandy (Dwight) Hendricks of Lamar and Linda (Denny) Kellenbenz of Bishopville; two grandchildren, Sambo (Ginger) Hendricks and Dave (Paula) NeSmith.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by a brother, Mitchell Howell.

BETTY B. GRIGGS
PIEDMONT — Graveside services for Betty Bledsoe Griggs, 60, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Gardens, directed by The Howze Mortuary, Travelers Rest, S.C.
Mrs. Griggs died Saturday morning, Jan. 18. Born in Whitestone, S.C., she was the daughter of the late James Clare and Thelma Louise Knox Bledsoe. She was retired from the School District of Greenville County.
Surviving are her husband, Creighton D. Griggs of the home; a daughter and son–in–law, Lisa G. and Tom Fitts of Shelby, N.C.; two sons, Creighton David Griggs III and James Michael Griggs, both of Piedmont; and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Griggs was predeceased by a son, William Lawrence Larry Griggs.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society of Greenville County, the American Heart Association or Zion Baptist Family Life Center, 525 W. Zion Church Road, Shelby, NC 28150.
MARY R. KIRKLEY
McBEE — Funeral services for Mary Raulerson Kirkley, 55, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville, with the Rev. Chris Denny officiating. Burial was in McBee cemetery.
Mrs. Kirley died Saturday, Jan. 18. She was born in Jacksonville, Fla., a daughter of Billye Keye Smith and the late Roland Raulerson.
Surviving are her husband, Julius Kirkley of McBee; mother of McBee; two sons, Ronnie Lee McMahon of Vero Beach, Fla., and Robert Warren McMahon of Knoxville, Tenn.; step–son, Eric Kirkley of Hartsville; two sisters, Lynn Repici of Woodbine, N.J., and Tia Heath of San Antonio, Texas; and two step–grandchildren, Chase and Logan Kirkley of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Raulerson. Memorials may be made to the McBee Rescue Squad, PO Box 355, McBee, SC 29101.
PLEASANT PATTERSON
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Pleasant Sissy Patterson of Society Hill were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Mt. Rona Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Ms. Patterson died Sunday, Jan. 12, at the residence of a niece, Pleasant Jackson, after a long illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Amos and Roena Carroway Patterson. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a life member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church.
She worked as a farmer and was the mother of several of her nieces and nephews that she reared as her own. A son, James Patterson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Lincoln Patterson of New York; two sisters, Ms. Ida Patterson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Lizzie Thomas of Detroit, Mich.; three special nieces, Pleasant Dixon Jackson of Society Hill and Roenea Dixon (George) Dean of Detroit, Mich., and Cynthia Workman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven nephews, Alfred (Mattie) Dixon, Willie Dixon, Robert (Martha) Dixon, Jerry (Gail) Patterson, all of Darlington, Walter (Mary) Tedder of Charlotte, N.C., Michael (Debra) Patterson of Hartsville, and Eddie (Jeanette) Workman of Society Hill; and a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins. SPARTANBURG — Funeral services for Jane Walter Mason were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, Spartanburg, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Burial was held at 12 noon Tuesday, Jan. 21, in Bamberg County Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29303 or to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615.
Mrs. Mason died Friday, Jan. 17, at her home. A native of Bamberg, she was the daughter of the late William McCormick and Sarah Murphy Walter and the wife of Gaines Harrell Mason Jr. She was a graduate of USC where she received a BA in English and journalism and a master's degree in library science. She was in charge of Technical Services with Greenville Technical College and was the former director of the Hartsville and Marlboro County Libraries. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hartsville. She was the former president of the S.C. State Library Association and a former Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church of Hartsville. She was an avid reader and painter of watercolors.
Survivors in addition to her husband are one sister, Mary Walter Tillotson of Carrollton, Ga., and a number of nieces and nephews.
RUBY J. WILLIAMS
Funeral services for Ruby Janson Williams, 68, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Mrs. Williams died Thursday, Jan. 16.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Williams; four daughters, Linda Niklow, Cheri Bracken, Victoria Holliday and Candice Reams; two sons, Michael and Larry Holliday; and three sisters, Helen Ingram, Hazel Gaymon and Mildred Lynch.
ARIE H. LANDRUM JR.
BISHOPVILLE — Memorial services for Arie Harrison Landrum Jr., 68, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Phelps officiating, directed by Hancock–Elmore–Hill Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home, 119 1–A Chappell Dr., Bishopville.
Mr. Landrum, husband of Argent Denniston Landrum, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Born at Fort Moultrie, S.C., he was a son of the late Arie Harrison Landrum Sr. and the late Ethel Matthews Landrum.
Mr. Landrum was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Bishopville and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He and his wife moved to Bishopville in 1992, where he devoted his talents as a pioneer in television and radio broadcasting to enriching the community of Lee County. He was past executive director of the Lee County Chamber of Commerce and was co–founder of the Lee County Players. He was the former owner of WAGS radio station where he continued to be an on–air personality. Mr. Landrum also enjoyed freelance writing. He will be missed by his many, many friends.
Survivors beside his wife of Bishopville are a daughter, Janice Landrum Edmonds and her husband, Thomas, of Lexington; a son, Mark A. Landrum of Lilburn, Ga.; three grandchildren, Kristan Landrum, Jessica Landrum and Rachael Edmonds; a brother, Robert J. Landrum and his wife, Gloria, of Columbia; and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Arie Harrison Landrum III, and a brother, Joseph N. Landrum.

JOHN ALSBROOK
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Rev. John Alsbrooks Jr. were held at 12 noon on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, in St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna G. Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Rev. Alsbrook died Saturday, Jan. 18, in a Florence hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Bennettsville, a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. John and Lula Brown Alsbrook Sr. He received an A. B. degree from Morris College, Sumter; master of education degree from S.C. State University, Orangeburg; master of divinity degree form Lutheran Southern Seminary, Columbia, and also studied at Duke University ITC Seminaries, Durham, N.C.
He taught social studies at Mayo High School for 30 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a medical technician and was honorably discharged. He was ordained a deacon in the Friendship Baptist Church. Later, he joined the United Methodist Church and started his preaching on the Mars Bluff Charge. Other charges served were Mullins, Latta, Pageland, Lamar–Ebenezer, Owsego Circuit, Mechanicsville and Lake City Parish. Since retiring in 1992, he joined St. James United Methodist Church and worked with the ministers as needed. He was a life member of NAACP, Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 17, first president of the Darlington County Teachers Federal Credit Union, treasurer of the Darlington Area Ministerial Association, member of the Historical Landmark Commission of Darlington, volunteer chaplain for McLeod Regional Medical Center, past president of Morris College National Alumni Association, Disaster Relief and Pastoral Care and Counseling Committees on the Conference Council on Ministries of the United Methodist Church. He received the Presidential Citation Award from Morris College, May, 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Spears Alsbrooks of the home; two daughters, Gayle Singleton (Tryone) of Santee and Gwendolyn Mitchell of Clinton, Md.; two grandsons, Kenneth Mitchell II of San Jose, Costa Rica, and Marcus Mitchell of Clinton, Md.; one aunt, Helen Brown of Rocky Mount, N.C.; in–laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
MILDRED F. DAVIS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mildred Folsom Bryant Davis, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Central Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Davis died Thursday, Jan. 23. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late George Ervin and Edna Newsome Folsom. She was married
to the late Alton Lee Bryant and the late Joe Davis. Mrs. Davis retired from American Can Company and was a former member and chaplain of Darlngton Women's Club. She was a member of Central Baptist Church for more than 70 years, where she was in the Monday Morning Bible Study Circle and member of the Lucille Edwards Sunday School Class.
Surviving are three sons and daughters–in–law, Kenneth Ervin and Lottie Bryant of Darlington, Thomas Francis and Mary Bryant of Manning and Alton Lee and Brenda Bryant of Georgetown; two daughters and sons–in–law, Betty Lou and Emmett Faulk of Augusta and Patsy and Conrad Hoffmeyer of Florence; 14 grandchildren; 16 great–grandchildren and one great–great grandchild; one sister, Margaret F. Parker of Hartsville; also three step–daughters, Mary Ann Barnes of Manning, Betty Jo (Nick) Hobeika of Charleston and Jane (Rick) Shields of Charlotte, N.C.
The family will receive today, Jan. 24, from 5–7 p.m. at the funeral home.

TWANA S. CHAPMAN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Twana Sarita Chapman, 27, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Savannah Grove A.M.E. Church with the Rev. J. E. Dukes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Miss Chapman died on Friday, Jan. 24, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Paterson, N.J., a daughter of Gloria A. Chapman and James Holmes Jr. She received her formal education in the Darlington County schools graduating from Lamar High School, class of 1993, and received an associate degree at Florence–Darlington Technical College in 1997. She was employed at Washington Mutual in Florence. She was a member of Savannah Grove A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include her mother, Gloria A. Chapman of Darlington; her father, James Holmes Jr. (Francena) ; two brothers, Shawn Demetrius Chapman (Pontheola) and James Jerome Holmes, both of Darlington; a sister, Latricia Holmes of Darlington; three special nephews; maternal grandmother, Dorothy C. Blathers of Hartsville; paternal grandmother, Elise Homes of Darlington; paternal grandfather, Charlie King; godmother, Minister Pearlie Joyner of Darlington; five aunts; eight uncles; several great–aunts and great–uncles.
DANIEL ROBINSON
Funeral services for Daniel Robinson, 51, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Faith Memorial Gardens cemetery, Darlington, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.
Mr. Robinson died Wednesday, Jan. 22, in Union Regional Medical Center in Monroe, N.C., after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Oscar and Rebell Wingate Robinson. He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County.
At an early age he attended Mt. Tema Baptist Church in Hartsville. After moving to Chesterfield, he worshipped with the Rhema World Full Gospel Ministry.
Surviving are three brothers, Eddie Robinson, Robert Robinson and Henry (Patricia) Robinson, all of Hartsville; three nieces, Wanda Perry and Vonda Auxer, both of Great Lakes, Ill., and Terri Robinson of Columbia; a nephew, Patrick Robinson of Hartsville; one grand–nephew, Gabriel A. Auxer of Great Lakes, Ill.; seven aunts, Dora McCullough, Betty McCall, Eloise Wingate and Delores (Sam) Graham, all of Darlington, Ernestine (Edward) Zimmerman and Sarah Williams, both of Society Hill, and Rosetta Robinson of New York City; one uncle, Edward Wingate of Darlington; three great–aunts, Carrie Lee Jacobs of Hartsville; Bernetha Lighty of Darlington and Venette Wingate of Roosevelt, N.Y.
THOMAS J. ISEMAN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Thomas J. Iseman, 65, were held at 2 pm. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mr. Iseman died Friday, Jan. 24, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Sammy and Louise Adams Iseman. He was a retired truck driver and an outdoorsman. He was a member of the First Original Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Iseman of Darlington; two daughters, Lisa Edwards of Darlington and Gail (Roy) Cater of Florence; grandchildren, Tonya Carnell, Dustin Edwards and Eddie Cater; also one sister, Kathryn (Howell) Jeffords of Darlington.

LESLIE WALTERS
Graveside services for Leslie Walters, 83, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Bethel cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Walters died Friday, Jan. 24. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late William and Ada Gainey Walters.
Surviving are his son, Buddy Walters of Kershaw; and a daughter, Rosie Walters of Columbia.
