Mrs. Georgia Ketter Etheridge died on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Daisy Denmark, of 503 Joe Louis Ave. in Darlington. Hines Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Willie Samuel Snook Davis Jr., were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. D. L. Hughes, pastor, and the Rev. J. W. Kelly, pastor emeritus of Friendship Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Davis died Wednesday, Feb. 5, in a Dillon nursing home after a long illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Lillian Johnson Davis and the late Willie Samuel Davis Sr.
He was a graduate of Mayo High School, class of 1947. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Navy and received an honorable discharge. He continued his education at Tuskegee University, formerly Tuskegee Institute, in Tuskegee, Ala., and graduated from a School of Butchering in New York. He was a life member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. In the community, he was a member of the Darlington Branch of the N.A.A.C.P., the Federated Organization of Darlington and the Mayo High School Alumni Association.
He was predeceased by two nephews, professors Andrew D. Green and Roderick L. Green.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Lillian J. Davis of Darlington; two sisters, Herlina D. Morris (John, deceased) and Creola D. (Calvin) Green Sr., both of Darlington; two brothers, James (Janie) Wright of Darlington and James (Laura) Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa.; three aunts, Mrs. Ethel Davis, Mrs. Anna Davis and Mrs. Martha Davis, all of Darlington; nieces, nephews and cousins.
BARON Y. BANKS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Baron Yarborough Banks, 86, were held in the Belk Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Burial was in Grove Hill cemetery, Darlington.
Mrs. Banks, widow of T. Baker Banks, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003. She had been a lifelong resident of Darlington County and was the daughter of Margaret Gibson and William Baron Yarborough. She was well known from lifelong service at Wilcox Drugstore in Darlington. She graduated from the public schools of Darlington County and from the Columbia Business College. He early work career began with the office of the electric co–op. Later she made her career with the Darlington County Superintendent of Education's office, from which she retired after serving over 25 years. She also worked a few years at Coggeshall's Department Store after her retirement.
Mrs. Banks and her husband, Baker, were members of First Baptist Church, Darlington. Later when she moved to Florence to be near family, she attended the First Baptist Church in Florence where she lived for a number of years in the community of McClenaghan Place. She had a great circle of friends, as well as later at the Carolina House in Florence. As her health failed, the folks at Heritage Home in Florence gave her love and care.
Mrs. Banks sister, Hazel Yarborough Luhrs, preceded her in death. She is survived by a nephew, Charles F. (Rick) Luhrs, his wife, Jeddie, and their children Baron Renee and Robert. There are several other nieces, nephews, great–nieces and nephews and a host of loving and caring friends.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Darlington Building Fund or to McLeod Health Cardian Rehabilitation, McLeod Foundation, Florence.
ELIZABETH A. GABEL
RIVERSIDE, Ca. — Graveside funeral services for Elizabeth Arlene Gabel, 83, will be held at 10:15 a.m. today, Feb. 12, 2003, at Riverside National cemetery, directed by Acheon & Graham, Garden of Prayer, Riverside, Ca.
Mrs. Gabel, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, after a long–term illness. She was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She attended business/secretarial school. She was an executive secretary with Top Secret Clearance and was secretary with Red Cross during World War II. She retired from Aerojet General after 13 years. She was a military wife for 25 years.
Survivors are three sons, Steven of Truckee, Ca. and Michael of Huntington Beach, Ca., and Bill (Libby) Watford Gabel of Hartsville; granddaughters, Laura and LeAnne, of Hartsville and Lisa Gabel Barrows of Faquay–Varina, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions to the General Curtis E. LaMay Foundation, 17050 Arnold Dr., Riverside, Ca. 92518.
LORETTA HAILE
Loretta Haile, formerly of Hartsville, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in a New York hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Haile is the daughter of Bertha Lee Douglas and the sister of Charles Douglas, both of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of her mother at 1821 Blanding Drive in Hartsville.
LILA MAE DIXON
Funeral services for Lila Mae Gainey Dixon, 77, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 12, 2003, at Darlington Church of God of Prophecy. Bishop Bobby Steen and the Revs. Harold Copeland, Glenn McGoughan and Marvin Griggs will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dixon, widow of Edward P. Dixon, died Sunday, Feb. 9. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late John and Gladys Hall Gainey.
Surviving are two sons, Earl Dixon and Don Dixon, both of Hartsville; a brother, Jimmy Gainey of Columbia; two sisters, Kathy Felkle and Alice Faye Stratton, both of Columbia; seven grandchildren and five great–grandchildren.
CECIL C. LARYMORE
AUGUSTA, Ga. — A memorial service for Cecil C. Larymore, 79, was conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Elliott Sons Lumpkin Road Chapel with the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating.
Mr. Larymore died Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Doctors Hospital. He was a native of Darlington and had made his home in the Augusta area since 1959. He was an electrical contractor by trade, a member of the IBEW local No. 1579 and attended Sivlercrest Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II an served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Lula Bell Larymore; one son, Dale Larymore; one daughter, Hope Moore both of Hephzibah; three brothers, Willard Larymore, Jennings Larymore and Russell Larymore, all of Darlington; two sisters, Litah Price and Maggie Bairefoot also of Darlington; six grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.
RALPH W. FENNELL
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Ralph Wayne Fennell, 56, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, in Anderson, Matthews cemetery, Coward directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Fennell died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003. He was born in Florence County, a son of the late George Charlie and Pauline Matthews Fennell.
Surviving are his wife, Rosa Cook; a son, Wayne J. Fennell of West Palm, Fla.; a daughter, Heidi Fennell of Darlington; step–daughter, Tonya Cook of West Palm, Fla.; two granddaughters, Autumn and Heather Hagenmiller; four sisters, LaRue Rogers, Judy Perkins, Faye McKnight and Wanda Ransom, all of Darlington.
WILLIE B. NEWSOME
Funeral services for Willie Blanche Ma Coot Newsome, 94, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Gum Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Gardner and Darryl Bogatay officiating, assisted by John Griggs and Gregg Griffin. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Newsome, widow of W. A. Newsome, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Etson and Carrie Moore King. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church, Sunday School Teacher for 50 years, owner and operator of Newsome's Grocery, and a substitute teacher for the Clyde Schools. She was known and loved by her family and friends as Ma Coot.
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, James E. Tom and Doris Newsome of Florence, John A. and Patsy Newsome of Newport, Tenn; daughter and son–in–law, Joye N. and Luther Bucky Howard of Hartsville; grandchildren, Wesley Newsome, Dennis Newsome, Phillip Newsome, Sandy Folk, Jackie Tyner, Mark Newsome, DeEtte Johnson; nine great–grandchildren; and two great–great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jay King, Brock King, Jack King, Lonnie King and sister, Ruby King.
SANDY M. GRIGGS
Funeral services for Sandy Marvin Griggs, 84, will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be this evening from 6–9 at the funeral home.
Mr. Griggs died Monday, Feb. 10. Born in Darlington County, he was the son of the late Marvin and Ruth Linton Griggs. He was retired from Perfection American, a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Viola Horton Griggs of Hartsville; a son, Sylvester Griggs of Patrick; two daughters, Sandra Martin of Society Hill and Judy Melton of Hartsville; two brothers, Lemuel and Hubert Griggs of Hartsville; three sisters, Virginia Tyner and Gladys Gainey of Patrick and Burnice Peavy of Florence; nine grandchildren and one great–grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Howard Marvin Griggs, and a sister, Alma Hunter.
Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 949 North Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.
JANNIE L. BENNETT
Funeral services for Jannie Louise Bennett were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, with professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bennett died Friday, Feb. 7, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Eddie and Susanne Andrews. She was educated in the Spartanburg Institute for the Deaf and Blind.
Surviving are two sons, Evans (Deborah) Bennett of Hartsville and Leroy Bennett of Bennettsvile; one grandson, Jason Capers of Hartsville; and a sister, Ida Smith of Hartsville.
ANNER P. THOMPSON
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Anner Pressley Thompson, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, in Laurelwood cemetery, Rock Hill, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thompson died Tuesday, Feb. 11. She was born in Lancaster County, a daughter of the late John E. and Nettie Blanche Wright Pressley. She was a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 17, in York, S.C., member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary of Darlington and a member of Mont Clare Baptist Church, where she was a member of The Seekers of the Church, the Friendship Club and Bible study group.
Surviving are a stepson, Donald Lynn (Joyce) Thompson; three step–grandchildren, Donald (Carole) Thompson of Timmonsville, Patricia Sorensen and Linda Thompson, both of Darlington; three step–great–grandchildren and one step–great–great–grandchild.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Lynn Thompson.

DILLON C. ADAMS
Funeral services for Dillon C. Adams, 66, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church cemetery near Pageland at 1 p.m., directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service today at the church.
Mr. Adams died Wednesday, Feb. 12. He was born in Lancaster County, a son of the late Henry Bob and Laura Ellen Mills Adams. He was owner of Pioneer Chemical Co. and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Michael D. Adams of Hartsville; a brother, John H. Adams of Lancaster; four sisters, Sara Jackson, Lola Mae Bigham, both of Lancaster, Ann Harkey of Fort Lawn, Mary Hancock of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren, Michael L. Adams and Tisha Jones, both of Hartsville.
GEORGIA ETHERIDGE
Funeral services for Georgia Ketter (Sook) Etheridge were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Etheridge was a daughter of the late Martin and Metta Franklin Ketter. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. At an early age, she was converted to Christian living and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. H. H. Butler. She was a faithful member and served her church in many capacities until her health failed. She was also a member of the OES, Mt. Rona Chapter No. 233.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Daisy E. (Robert) Denmark, and one grandson, Oyama Denmark, both of Darlington; two brothers, Housten (Helen) Ketter and Charlie Ketter, both of New York, N.Y.; two great–grandchildren and a special nephew, Reggie Ketter; and a host of other very close relatives and friends.
ALLEAN DOWDY
Funeral services for Allean Dowdy, 66, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with Bishop R. O. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Cherry Grove Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 909 Mondora Street and 615 Birchleaf Drive in Hartsville.
Mrs. Dowdy died Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Carnell and Willie Mae Rhodes Coe. She received her education at Cherry Grove School and Butler High School. Mrs. Dowdy attended Cherry Grove Baptist Church and was a member of Household of Faith Holiness Church, Usher Board, Missionary Board and the Mother's Choir.
Surviving are her husband, Howard Dowdy of Hartsville; two daughters, Margaret Ann (Paul) Ratliff of Hartsville and Martha Coe of Myrtle Beach; a granddaughter, Sandra (Chris) Hickman of Hartsville; eight sisters, Margaret Coe, Florrie Thomas (William) Lighty, Queen Ester Coe and Willie Mae (Donald) Daniels, all of Hartsville, Laura Mae McQueen of Wadesboro, N.C., Martha Lee Moore of Detroit, Mich., Peggy (Jerome) Brown of Newport News, Va., and Ellen (Frankie) Smith of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, James (Shirley) Coe of Bridgeport, Conn., David (Sahara) Coe of Arlington, Va., and Carnell (Sabrina) Coe Jr. of Decatur, Ga.; aunts, uncles and other close relatives and friends.
