KAY S. NORTON

Kay Stewart Norton, 61, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003. The family will receive friends this evening, Wednesday from 5 to 7 at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Funeral plans will be announced later.

W. CLAUDE MIMS

Funeral services for William Claude Mims Sr., 78, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul Mitchell will officiate with burial at Westview cemetery.

Mr. Mims died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Robert Preston and Mattie Parnell Mims. He was a member Union United Methodist Church, was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 36 years and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a sergeant in the military police.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia King Mims of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Mr. and Mrs. William Mims Jr. of Crossville, Tenn.; daughter and son–in–law, Ginger and Barry Houghtalen of Knoxville, Tenn.; and granddaughter, Kaley Mims.

TINSY RILEY

Funeral services for Tinsy Perdue Riley, 78, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch and the Rev. John Hamilton will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 949 N. Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Riley died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003. Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Pearlie Lynch Perdue. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Fellowship Bible Class. She and her husband were owners and operators of the Family Kitchen.

Surviving are her husband, Haskell Riley of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Theresa and the Rev. Wayne Cash of Hartsville, Snookie and the Rev. Allen Barnett of Rockwall, Texas; sister, Mattie Rolfe of Hartsville; grandchildren, Chantel Mayton, Christopher Cash, Matthew Cash, Patrick Cash, Shannon Isom, Kent Barnett, Monica Stock; and seven great–grandchildren.

VICY L. MASON

Funeral services for Vicy L. Hooks Mason, 80, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bishopville. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mason died Saturday, Feb. 15, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Cyron and Argeree Hooks and received her education in the Lee County public schools. She grew up attending Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. After she met and married J. D Mason, she became a faithful member of Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and within this union 18 children were born. Mrs. Mason had four children to precede her in death: Alfred, Albert, Tony and L.D. Mason.

Mrs. Mason was a part of many organizations in the church. She served as a deaconess, a missionary, a member of the Pastor's Aide Committee and Mother of the Church. She often gave her testimony to her determination to live a Christ–like life in all her ways.

Surviving other than her husband, J. D. Mason of 65 years of Hartsville are 13 children, Ethel Wilson, Argeree Cooks, Josielene Brailey, Ciron Mason, Barbara Hawkins, Allen Mason, Dorothy Cooley, Andrew Mason, Julious Mason, Ronnie Mason, Sarah Mason and Sandra Reed, all of Hartsville and Herbet Mason of Chicago, Ill; two sisters, Teresa Brunson and Gerline Sam, both of Bishopville; four sisters–in–law, Blossie Hooks, Dehlia Moore, Beatrice Mason and Bernice Dewitt, all of Bishopville; five aunts, Betty Need of Bishopville, Pansey Sweetenburg and Marvel Chestnut of Camden, N.J., and Anna Mae McCaskill and Meredith Jackson, both of Baltimore, Md.; 143 grandchildren and great–grandchildren and two great–great–grandchildren.

GLADYS F. HAYWARD

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Gladys Floyd Boseman Hayward will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 14, 2003, at First Original Free Will Baptist Church, with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hayward died Tuesday, Feb. 11. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Estelle Rhodes Floyd. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. and a member of First Original Free Will Baptist Church, where she was involved in the Women's Auxiliary.

Surviving are three daughters, Maybelle (Bob) Brooks of Greensboro, N.C., Anne Boseman Truett of Darlington and Connie (Jimmy) Griggs of Hartsville; two sons, James H. (Faye) Boseman of Charlotte, N.C., and Ralph E. (Marian) Boseman of Summerton; two sisters, Lucille Hatchell of Darlington and Mary Roscoe of Hartsville; two brothers, Clifton Pal Floyd of Darlington and George Floyd of Columbia; also eight grandchildren and nine great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Original Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 441, Darlington, SC 29540.

DR. JAMES W. BLACKMON

Graveside services for Dr. James W. Blackmon, 60, were held at 2 pm. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford officiated the burial, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atktins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, 121 North Fifth Street, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Dr. Blackmon died Thursday, Feb. 13. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Julian C. and Lila Folsom Blackmon. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, a graduate of Hartsville High School, Coker College and Life University, Altanta, Ga. He taught chemistry at Hartsville High School for five years, practiced chiropractic in Hartsville for 10 years, and was employed with Royster Clark as a chemist.

Surviving are his wife, Lyn Terry Blackmon of Hartsville; step–son, Barron Harold Windham III of Hartsville; sister, Ruth B. Stanley of Hartsville; and a brother Julian Curtis Blackmon Jr. of Camden.

BELLE S. BRANHAM

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Belle S. Branham, 67, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Todd Parrish and the Rev. Leroy Lowry and directed by Kistler– Hardee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Grove Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Branham died on Sunday, Feb. 2. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Margaret Arah Griggs Sansbury. She operated Branham's airport for many years and served as secretary at Branham's Garage. Belle as she was fondly called, joined Temple Free Will Baptist Church on Sept. 8, 1963, and was an active member until her illness. A dedicated hard worker, involved in benevolent service, Belle always put the needs of others first in her life. She was best known for preparing meals for the needy, shut– ins, and bereaved families. For over 20 years, she taught the Sunday school primaries and served as church treasurer. She served as an officer in the church women's auxiliary for more than 35 years. Mrs. Branham played an important role in organizing Temple Free Will Baptist Church. She loved animals and enjoyed being with her husband on trips in the Rollback.

Survivors include her husband, Rudy Branham of Darlington; one son, Rudy (Carolyn) Branham Jr. of Darlington; four sisters, Catherine (Fred) Cross of Darlington, Margaret (Hugh) Newsome of Hartsville, Marilyn Sansbury and Carolyn Humphries, both of Florence; three brothers, Jerrel (Elinor) Sansbury of Darlington, Ferrel (Barbara) Sansbury of Santee and Lonnie (Margie) Sansbury of Florence; one granddaughter, Angel (Denny) Blackmon and two great– grandchildren, Corbin and Landon Blackmon.

Memorials may be made to Temple Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 287, Darlington, SC 29540.

REV. JIMMY R. SIBBETT

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for the Rev. Jimmy Ray Sibbett, 56, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Dovesville Church of God conducted by the Rev. Stuart Jacobs and the Rev. Clifton Whittman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Kistler– Hardee Funeral Home.

The Rev. Sibbett died Sunday night in a Florence hospital after an extended illness. He was a member of the Dovesville Church of God and was an evangelist at many other churches. He was employed by Sara Lee for over 17 years and was a U.S. Army veteran. The Rev. Sibbett loved to hunt and fish.

Surviving are his wife, Cora Lee Sibbett of Darlington; two sons, Darryl and Paschal; two daughters, Wanda and Ann; and one granddaughter, Crystal.

FREDERICK J. COOK

FLORENCE — Frederick Joseph Cook, 75, died Jan. 30, 2003, in Florence after an unexpected illness. He was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Lawrenceville, Pa., the third of seven children, to Clarence Alfred and Mary Griffin Cook. He attended Central High School and the University of Pittsburgh. He was an excellent athlete, playing baseball, football and boxing. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served as a gunners mate in the submarine fleet. He was honorably discharged after the war.

Mr. Cook married his wife and lifelong companion, Cecelia Dolores Bauer, on Nov. 24, 1951. They made their home in Washington, Pa., from 1963 until they retired to South Carolina in 1997. They have eight children and 13 grandchildren.

Mr. Cook was a member of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church of Florence, but for many years was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church. He was very active in the Booster Club and coached midget league football. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast, with a passion for Notre Dame football and following his children and grandchildren and their teams.

He was employed at Transitional Employment Consultants where he was a job developer for mental health until his retirement. He was a passionate advocate for the rights of the mentally and physically challenged and spoke at employment conferences throughout the state. He was a longtime member of American Legion Post 173.

Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Cecelia of Lamar, two sons, Paul and James Cook of Washington, Pa.; four daughters, Barbara Cook Seaman of West Alexander, Pa., Patricia Cook Zaccone of Scenery Hill, Pa., Mary Beth Cook Korowski and Amy Cook Amon of Lamar; and 13 grandchildren; his sisters, Nancy Cooke Diederick of Grafton, Ohio, Diane Cook Conti of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Sister Mary Eileen Cook of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are three brothers, Dick, Clarence and Roy Cook, and two sons, Timothy and Stephen Cook.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Brown– Pennington– Atkins Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

JAMES FREEMAN

LAMAR — Graveside services for James Otha Freeman, 79, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Freeman, husband of the late Doris Lane Freeman, died Thursday, Jan. 30, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Charlie E. and Lizza Windham Freeman. He served in the United States Navy in World War II, was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Lamar Rescue Squad. Mr. Freeman retired from Dupont after 24 years and was a member of the Lamar Church of God.

Surviving are three sons, Tommy (Sadie) Jackson of Florence, Charles (Sheila) Jackson of Bishopville and Jimmy L. (Verna) Freeman of Lamar; one daughter, Frances Hoffman of Hartsville; four grandchildren, two great– grandchildren and a special friend, Eula Parnell of Lamar.

HUGH D. WHITE

DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Hugh Dewey White Jr., 58, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in the Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dan Thigpen and directed by Kistler– Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. White died Thursday morning, Jan. 29, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County on Dec. 18, 1944, a son of Betty Terrell White and the late Hugh D.White. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was employed by ESAB in Florence. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed boating.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Lamar are one son, Trey (Sonya) White of Darlington; one daughter, Jessica White of Charleston; one brother, Ronnie White of Camden; and one sister, Jenny (Reggie) Sparks of Lamar.

LEVI HORTON

MASON CITY, Iowa — Graveside services for Levi Horton, 81, were held Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Park cemetery with Thomas Healey, officiating. Norton Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Horton died Saturday, Feb. 1.

Surviving are his daughter, Betty L. Diswell of Mason City, Iowa; step– daughters, Wynona Stokes of Hartsville and Italeen Hayes of Lugoff; sister, Helen Hutton of Mendopa, Va.; grandson, Chris Diswell of New York; and a niece, Jonnetta Hutton of Mendopa, Va.

NATHANIEL JACKSON

Funeral services for Nathaniel Jackson, 76, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in Centerville A.M.E. Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Jackson died Sunday, Feb. 2, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Samuel and Rosa Lee Jackson. He was a member of Centerville A.M.E. Church, Men's Choir, Senior Choir, Sonoco Old Timer's Club and was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 32 years of dedicated service.

Surviving are his wife, Beulah Lee Cuffie Jackson of Hartsville; a son, James (Patricia) Jackson of Hartsville; daughter Norma Jean of Washington, D.C.; an adopted daughter, Gloria Jackson of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren; nine great– grandchildren; mother– in– law, Agnes F. Cuffie of Hartsville; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

LIDE WINBURN

Funeral services for Lide George Winburn, 89, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Harper will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Brown– Pennington– Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Winburn died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late George Washington and Mary Jordan Winburn. He was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church, retired from Sonoco Products Company, and was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Lundy Winburn of Hartsville; sons and daughters– in– law, Lide M. and Ellen Winburn Sr. of Hartsville, Melvin L. and Brenda Winburn of Greenwood, Carlyle and Helen Smith of Ruby; daughters and sons– in– law, Mildred W. and Gilford Dearman of Simpsonville, Margaret W. and Thomas Nelms of Simpsonville, Shelby W. Chandler of Mauldin, Faye W. and David Bramlett of Laurens, Cathy Elaine W. and Leslie Burr of Hartsville, Linda Faye W. and Dick Overmeyer of Orangeburg, Brenda S. and Tommy Caulder of Chesterfield; sister and brother– in– law, Linda S. and Johnny Wallace of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren; and many great– grandchildren.
