Funeral services for Joyce Sansbury Vincent, 60, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Elim United Methodist Church with the Revs. Edward Herlong and Bill Ishman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown– Pennington– Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Elim United Methodist Church, 4532 Oates Highway, Lamar, SC 29069.
Mrs. Vincent died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Harry and Edell Watford Sansbury. She was a member of Elim United Methodist Church, a graduate of Lamar High School, and was a devoted wife and mother.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald Vincent of Hartsville; daughter and son– in– law, Ronda and Ken Jordan of Beaufort; father and mother of Oates; sisters and brothers– in– law, Connie and Gerald Lloyd, Kathie and Steve Blackwell, all of Hartsville; grandchild, Sullivan Jordan; three nephews; and one niece.

PFC WARREN K. SMITH JR.
Funeral services with full military honors for PFC Warren Kelvin Smith Jr., 19, of Ft. Eustis, Va., were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel with burial following in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. PFC Smith died on Monday, Jan. 27, after a sudden illness.
PFC Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army some year ago and was deployed after basic training to the MACH USA MEDAC Co. of Ft. Eustis. Both parents were military and PFC Smith who graduated from high school in Japan hardly knew any other life. His parents were very proud of him as he followed in their footsteps.
He is survived by his father, Cedrick Minor, and mother Terri Arthur, as well as a brother, Cedric Minor II, all of Killeen, Texas; a step– brother, Eric Williams of Charlotte, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Mildred Simkins of Hartsville; maternal grandfather, Gary Arthur of Lydia; great– grandmother, Llillie Arthur of Lydia; paternal grandparents, Culton and Emma Minor Jr. of Kimberly, W.Va.; grandmother, Geraldine Byrd of Darlington; aunts, Machele Arthur of Hartsville, Paula (Edward) Murry of Kimberly, W.Va., Keena Biggers of Columbus Ohio, Lola (George) Cosby of Agusta, Ga., Vanessa Smith, Rosa Brown, Vanessa Smith, Veronica Frazier, Luella Price and Gloria King, all of Hartsville, and Teresa Jackson of New Haven, Conn.; uncles, Nathaniel (Betty) Perkins of Columbia, Timothy Byrd, Alphonso Byrd, Prescott Byrd, Jarod Byrd, Tommy Smith Jr. and Evander Smith, all of Hartsville.
SARAH STEAGALL
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Sarah Perkins Steagall, 77, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Calvary Baptist Church with burial following in Mount Hope cemetery, directed by Waters– Powell Funeral Home of Florence.
Mrs. Steagall died Thursday, Jan. 30, in a local hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Beverly James and Susie Register Perkins. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. She retired from the South Carolina Office of Inspector General. Mrs. Steagall was the widow of William Paul Steagall Jr.
Survivors include her daughter, Peggy (Paul) Hauschildt of Minneapolis, Minn.; four granddaughters, Leslie (Herb) Hunter, Heather (James) Bowar, Ashley Steagall and Katie Hauschildt; a great– granddaughter, Teagan Bowar; a great– grandson, Joshua Bowar; and her sister, Sue Evans of Lexington.
PAUL V. FORD
LUGOFF — In lieu of a memorial service, the family of Paul Vincent Ford, 76, received friends on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, from 5– 8 pm. in Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society, PO Box 1655, Hartsville, SC 29551.
Mr. Ford died Friday, Jan. 31. Born in Lugoff, he was the son of the late Robert and Pearl Mickle Ford. Mr. Ford was a former member of The Donkey and Mule Association of the Carolinas, and avid outdoorsman, and a dog lover. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy and was a maintenance supervisor for the Kershaw County Medical Center.
Surviving are his son, Stephen Paul Ford of Hartsville; a sister, Lucy F. Mobley of Camden; and a brother, Benjamin Ford of Great Falls.
Mr. Ford was predeceased by a sister, Nannie, and brothers, Richard, Robert and Billy Ford.
JEANNINE G. MARSH
DARLINGTON — Funeral services or Jeannine Garland Marsh, 63, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Southside Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Marsh died Friday, Feb. 21, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of Lila Gardner Garland and the late Melvin Garland. She was a Wilton cake instructor and was owner and operator of Your Cake Bakery. She was an office manager at Jones Auto Wrecking for many years. One of her greatest loves was serving her Lord through playing the organ and piano at many churches. She was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church and was the church organist. Mrs. Marsh was a graduate of Pee Dee Bible Institute.
Surviving are her husband, James Dewey Marsh; her daughter, Stephanie M. Galloway; both of Darlington; granddaughter, Kathryn Galloway and brother, Kendall (Iris) Garland, also of Darlington.

PATERSON, N.J. — Mr. James S. James formally of Lee County, died on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Paterson. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.
JUANITA W. FLOWERS
Funeral services for Juanita W. Flowers, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Buddy Amerson and Jerry Gainey officiating. Burial was in the Flowers cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Flowers, widow of Roland F. Flowers, died Saturday, Feb. 22. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Ben Timmons and Eula Lee Smith Watford. She was a member of Green Hill Church of God of Prophecy.
Surviving are five sons and daughters–in–law, Creighton (Nell) Flowers, Millard Flowers, Grover Flowers, Manuel (Ivy) Flowers and Delton Flowers, all of Hartsville; five daughters and sons–in–law, Janie Lee (Frank) Hall, Shirley Ann Woods, Margaret Ann (David) Dixon, Linda R. Hicks and Louretta (Tony) Smith, all of Hartsville; two brothers, Grady Watford of Darlington and Louie Watford of Laurel Hill, N.C.; one sister, Ethel Net Dority of Timmonsville; 15 grandchildren and 13 great–grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Clayton Flowers.
REV. PERRY LLOYD SR.
Funeral services for the Rev. Perry Lloyd Sr., 57, will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Kelleytown Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
The Rev. Lloyd died Monday, Feb. 24. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Lewis E. Lloyd Sr. and Lois Virginia Raines Lloyd. He was retired from McColl Gin Co., as a machinist, and was a member of the Kelleytown Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Kay Barfield Lloyd of Hartsville; a son, Sam (Leigh) Lloyd; a daughter, Marcy (Greg) Smith, all of Hartsville; a brother, C. H. (Sherre) Lloyd of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Cynthia (Ronnie) Morrell, Janie (Willie James) Howell, of Oates; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Lewis E. Lloyd Jr. and Francis Martin Lloyd.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 East Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
LILLIE C. PERDUE
PATRICK — Funeral services for Lillie Cornelia Perdue, 92, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw. Burial was in the Patrick cemetery. Memorials may be made to Patrick Rescue Squad, Patrick, SC 29584.
Mrs. Perdue died Sunday, Feb. 23. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late John C. and Mary Ellen Jordan Wilks. She was the widow of Archie C. Perdue. She enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Surviving are two sons, Ken Perdue and Bob Perdue of Patrick; a daughter, Yvonne McCray of Cheraw; 12 grandchildren; 11 great–grandchildren and eight great–great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, a son, Jim Perdue; a daughter, Billie Jordan; brothers, John C. Wilks, Daniel B. Wilks, Keith M. Wilks, George W. Wilks; sisters, Cora L. Stanton, Geneva A. Philbeck, Wilma W. Polson and Daisy Gingrich.
JOHN FRANKLIN JR.
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for John Theodore J. T. Franklin Jr., will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 26, 2003, in St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. A. G. Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home in Darlington.
Mr. Franklin died Saturday, Feb. 22, in a Georgetown nursing home after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John T. and Neta Evans Franklin Sr. He was a graduate of Mayo High School and continued his education in S.C. State Agricultural and Mechanical School (BS degree in agriculture) and S.C. State College (MA degree in agriculture) Orangeburg. He was a principal of Round O Elementary School and taught at Rosenwald High School, and Cain Elementary School. He was a project director for EOC and counselor at Florence–Darlington Technical College. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church where he served as a class leader, lay speaker and member of the United Methodist Men and Sunday school superintendent. Because of declining health, he moved to Georgetown with his son. There he attended St. Stephen AME Church. He was a member and secretary of Ashland Consistitory No. 248; member of Williams Temple Pee Dee United Elks Lodge No. 1679, Shriners Crescent Temple No. 148, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He also served as Boy Scouts of America scoutmaster and a member of Gilliard Hunting Club.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Benzena A. Franklin of Georgetown; a son, William Billy (Charlena) Franklin of Georgetown; a niece he reared as a daughter, Judith Jordan Dorrah of Greenwood; two brothers, Benjamin (Ernestine) Franklin of Darlington and Woodrow Franklin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Josephine Jordan and Ethel Branham, both of Darlington; and three grandchildren.
TOM YOUNG
Funeral services for Walter Thomas Tom Young Jr., 91, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.
Mr. Young died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003. Born in Rockingham, N.C., he was a son of the late Walter Thomas and Maude Robbins Young. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 50 years of service. He was an active member of First Baptist Church since 1947 and had served as a deacon, usher, Sunday school teacher and homebound visitor. Everyone who knew Tom will remember him for his strong faith in God, his honesty and his belief in always being the best you can be.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Louise Watkins Young of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Tommy and Frieda Young of Magnolia, Miss., Johnny and Sharon Young of Lyman; daughter and son–in–law, Kay and Jim Hoffman of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren and spouses, Kim and Daryl Chopin, Vanessa and Beau Clark, Stephen and Julie Hoffman; and great–grandchildren, Nathan Chopin, August Chopin and Will Clark.
VERONICA M. WOODHAM
Funeral services for Veronica Machelle Peaches Woodham, 30, were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Hartsville. Burial was in the St. John United Methodist Church cemetery with arrangements entrusted to Hines Funeral Home.
Ms. Woodham died on Wednesday, Feb. 19, in a local hospital after an illness. Peaches was a loving daughter of Mrs. Pleasant Woodham and the late Ronnie Woodham and spent her formative years in the Southside community of Hartsville. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and was a 1990 graduate of the Hartsville High School. She continued her education in the training as both a chef in the food service industry and as a nurse's assistant in the health care industry.
She was reared in a Christian home and continued to live the life of her training in her membership in the Nazareth Apostolic Church where she served faithfully.
Survivors, other than her mother, Pleasant Poston Woodham, are one son, Tiquez Rivers and a daughter, LaKeia Denzell Woodham. She also leaves to mourn her passing, a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and other relatives and very dear friends.
MARION ASKINS
MYRTLE BEACH — A celebration of life service for Marion Askins, 78, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Ocean View Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach with Dr. Steven Cromer officiating. Burial was held at 3:30 p.m. at Magnolia cemetery in Hartsville.
Mr. Askins died Monday, Feb. 24, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach. He was born June 29, 1924, in Hartsville, a son of the late M. K. and Sarah B. Johnson Askins. He was a longtime resident of Myrtle Beach and was an active member and deacon of Ocean View Baptist Church. Mr. Askins was a World War II veteran, a member of the 36th Infantry Division, the 8th Army Air Corps and a recipient of the Purple Heart and three Bronze Service Stars. He was a lifelong entrepreneur and a retired insurance adjustor with the James C. Green Co. Mr. Askins was a husband, father and grandfather and was an avid gardener and active community volunteer.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary J. Askins of Myrtle Beach; two sons, Timothy Marion (Karen Dyer) Askins of Mt. Pleasant and Robert Franklin (Allis Buice) Askins of Columbia; a daughter, Angela Askins (Dr. Gerald) Tiller of Georgetown; two brothers, John T. Askins Sr. of Hartsville and W. F. (Ruth Swan) Askins of Butner, N.C.; five grandchildren, Melanie Dawn Smith, Robert Andrew Askins, Katlin Delaney Askins, John Dyer Askins and Laura Abigail Askins and 13 nieces and nephews.

ELEANOR F. SMITH
Funeral services for Eleanor Flowers–Smith, 76, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Lakeview Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Saturday, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lakeview Baptist Church.
Mrs. Smith died Thursday, Feb. 26. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Tallie and Bessie Lunn Flowers. She was retired from Byerly Hospital and was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Vernon Smith of Columbia; sister, Juanita F. Amerson of Hartsville; five step–children and family; nieces and nephews, Faye and Tommy Grainger, Dayton, Lynn, Alex and Zach Grainger, Denise and Will Swope and numerous other nieces and nephews.
