George T. Sprouse

SPARTANBURG Funeral services for George T. Sprouse, 83, husband of Gladys McAbee Sprouse, of 105 Maxine St., were held at 12:30 this afternoon at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Burial was in Greenlawn Heritage Mausoleum. Mr. Sprouse died Saturday at Mary Black Hospital. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel had charge of arrangements.

Mae Ola Sanders
Jonesville native

Mae Ola Ivey Sanders, 85, widow of Preston Eugene Sanders Sr., of 1674 Jonesville Highway, died Tuesday morning, May 13, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Sanders was born in Jonesville on Nov. 17, 1917, a daughter of the late Tillman Ervin and Mary Etta Rector Ivey.

She was a member of Gilead Baptist Church where she had formerly taught the Senior Adult Ladies Sunday School Class and was former treasurer of the church for many years. She was director of the WMU for 32 years and a former member of the Bonham Home Demonstration Club.

Mrs. Sanders was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by a son, Preston Eugene Sanders Jr. Surviving are three sons and their wives, Richard Haskell Sanders Sr. and Shelby Sanders of Jonesville, Lewis Tillman Sanders and Hazel Sanders of Northport, Ala., and Henry Pagan Sanders and Patsy Sanders of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter-in-law, Pauline Sanders of Union; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a great-great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawton Neeley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday where the family will receive friends from 1:15 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Gilead Baptist Church Organ Fund or the Bus Fund, 748 Gaffney Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The family is at the h home of her son, Richard S. Sanders Sr., 1662 Jonesville Highway. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Members of the Senior Adult Ladies Class of Gilead Baptist Church are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers along with Mrs. Sanders nephews.

James Hughes

James (Cooter) Hughes died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. The family is at 1903 Lockhart Highway. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Mary Kennedy Berry
Union businesswoman

Mary Louise Kennedy Berry died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at her home after a brief illness. Mrs. Berry was born Sept. 1, 1919 in Union County, the daughter of the late Barham and Louise Foster Kennedy. She was educated at Union High School, Mary Baldwin College, and Converse College. In 1965, Mrs. Berry took over management of Oak Grove Farm and other business interests developed by her husband.

Mrs. Berry was active in numerous community activities including the American Red Cross, the Junior League of Union, the Girl Scouts of America and the Wallace Thomson Hospital Volunteers. As a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Berry served in many different positions in her work with the Women of the Church and had taught Sunday School for 45 years.

Mrs. Berry was predeceased by her husband, David Pinckney Berry Sr. She is survived by her son, Dr. David Pinckney Berry Jr. and his wife, Louisa, of Spartanburg; two daughters, Jane Berry Unti and her husband, Steve, of Atlanta and Susan Berry Duncan and her husband, Andrew, of Columbia; grandchildren, Mary Juliet Berry, David Pinckney Berry III, Duncan Eaves Berry, Virginia Matheson Berry and Louise Foster Unti.

She is also survived by a sister, Henrietta Kennedy Fowler of Union. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Charles H. Horne and the Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Currie. Interment will follow at Forest lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Daniel DuPre Berry, David Elliott Berry, Brandon Wood Berry, James Anderson Berry, Norris Rogers Fowler III, Thomas Ramsey Fowler, Thomas Franklin Gamble, Barham Foster Kennedy III and James Edward Hervey.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 672, Union, S.C. 29379 or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The family is at the home, 121 Circle Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

James Hughes Sr.

PACOLET - Funeral services for James (Cooter) Hughes Sr., 99, formerly of Union, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Maple Ridge Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Kenneth D. Saddler. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Union Community Funeral Home.

Lauren Elizabeth Tallo
Honor student

SENATOBIA, Miss. - Lauren Elizabeth Tallo, 18, daughter of Richard and LeJuan Tallo, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, from injuries received in an automobile accident. She was to graduate with highest honors from Senatobia High School on May 18 where she was president of the Beta Club, the Rotary Club and a scholarship recipient. She was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a brother, Aaron Richard Tallo; her grandparents, Fred and Mary Tallo of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was the granddaughter of the late Truesdale and Thelma Kerr. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Fine Arts Auditorium, Northwest Community College in Senatobia.

Burial was in Senatobia Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Gregory Catholic Church Building Fund, Senatobia, Miss. The Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Florence S. Worthy Florence S. Worthy of 710 Perrin Ave., died at her home Wednesday, May 13, 2004. The family is at the home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Eloise Beam
Union native

Eloise Beam, 86, of 102 Forrest Circle, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Beam was a daughter of the late Wallace Beam and Mary Beam of Union. She was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church in Lukesville, Mother of the Church and a member of the Senior Choir. She was a domestic worker and a member of St. Paul Adult Day Care Center.

Surviving are a son, Johnny Beam of Union; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mable. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Baptist Church by the Rev. George W. Shell Jr.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday. The family is at the home, 102 Forrest Circle. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Louise R. Bennett
Registered nurse

Louise Ridings (Skippy) Bennett, wife of W.C. Bennett, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. Mrs. Bennett was born in Pacolet on Aug. 4, 1925, the daughter of the late Arthur W. Ridings and Georgia Shepard Ridings.

She was a graduate of the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Columbia and Clinton High School Class of 1944. She was a registered nurse, working in Columbia, Clinton and Union. She was a Red Cross volunteer, assisting with many blood drives. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery and a member of the Bethany Sunday School Class.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bennett is survived by a daughter, Patricia B. Vanderford and her husband, Mike, of Cross Hill; two sons and their wives, Billy and Carol Bennett of Union and Jim and Annette Bennett of Rock Hill; a brother, Arthur Lewis Ridings of Conyers, Ga.; four grandsons and one granddaughter. She will be remembered as a loving, supporting wife, mother and grandmother. The family is at the home, 207 East South St.

Graveside services for close friends of Mrs. Bennett's family will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2003, at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. R. Earl McComb and the Rev. Benny Green. Memorials may be made to the Youth Department of First Baptist Church. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lewis Robert Roark
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Lewis Robert Roark, 63, husband of Anna Marie Bailey Roark, of 117 Lake Dr., Union, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Roark was born in Union on April 5, 1940, a son of the late Leonard and Lucille Vinson Roark. He was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, and was formerly employed with Regal Mills in Woodruff. Mr. Roark was a member of the Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church and a former mason and shriner.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter and her husband, Sheila and Paul Morris of Forest City, N.C.; two sons and their wives, Mason and Angie Roark of Union and Timothy and Jennifer Roark of Union; three brothers, Broadus Roark, William Roark and Leonard (Junior) Roark, all of Union; three sisters, Jackie Crouch of Florida, Connie Hyatt of Union and Evelyn Roberts of Michigan; and five grandchildren, Caleb Roark, Seth Roark, Ariel Roark, Chancellor Roark and Alexis Roark.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Pastor Joe Ballard. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. The family is at the home of his son, Mason Roark, 3211 Whitmire Highway, Union.

Memorials may be made to the Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 130, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
