DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Calpertta Spann, 53, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, in Center Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Boyd, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Hart No. 2 cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Ms. Spann, died Wednesday, March 5, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Izell and Henrietta Williams Spann. She attended Darlington County public schools.
Survivors include a sister, Fannie Mae Spann of Darlington; four brothers, Maxie (Alice) Spann, Carl Spann, Donald Spann and Izell Spann Jr., all of Darlington; one nephew, Terry Spann; one niece, Teresa Spann; two great–grandnieces, one great–grandnephew and three aunts.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a brother and sister–in–law, Maxie and Alice Spann, of 3317 Sally Hill Rd., Timmonsville.
CLAYTON A. BROWN
HEATH SPRINGS — Funeral services for Clayton A. Brown, formerly of Lamar, were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in John Wesley United Methodist Church, Lamar, with the Rev. C. K. Wilson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Northview cemetery in Florence, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Brown died Friday, April 11, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Lamar, the seventh child of seven children to the late Harry and Evelyn Frazier Brown Sr. He was the widower of Anna Lou Isaac Brown.
He received his formal education in Darlington County public schools and later graduated from St. Augustine College, receiving his master's degree from Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va. At an early age, he joined John Wesley United Methodist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged.
He was an elementary, middle school teacher and coach in the Lancaster County School District, retiring after 30 years. He was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and was blessed with many gifts and talents such as woodworking, sewing and cooking.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Brown of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Carlton Brown of the home; a sister, Ruth Ellen Worthem of Detroit, Mich.; a devoted friend, Rachel Asgill of Heath Springs; several sisters and brothers–in–law; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded by three brothers, Joseph Brown, Harry Brown Jr. and Samuel Brown; two sisters, Flora Brown Damon and Gladys Brown Watson.
LILA GARLAND
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lila Gardner Garland, 87, were held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Southside Free Will Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Leroy Lowery. Interment followed in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Garland died Saturday, April 12, in a Darlington nursing facility. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late James Steven and Minnie Lee Howell Gardner. She was married
to the late Melvin Garland. She retired from the American Can Company. She was a pianist for the Senior Citizen Band, a member of John K. McIver chapter of U.D.C. and of First Free Will Baptist Bible Church where she was the organist for many years. She was an original member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Kendall and Iris Garland of Darlington; six grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Dewey H. (Virginia) Vollrath of Hartwell, Ga. and Mrs. James B. (Irene) Skipper of Darlington.
Mrs. Garland was preceded in death by her daughters, Barbara June Garland and Jeannine Marsh.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
WINFRED H. MULLINS
Memorial services for Winfred Hubert Mullins, 83, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in the Chapel Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Mullins died Saturday, April 12. He was born in Mountain City, Tenn., a son of the late George H. and Lavinia Phillipe Mullins. He was retired from the Army after 24 years of service, having served during World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and later retired from the State of Arizona.
Surviving are his wife, Jewel Langley Mullins of Hartsville; daughter, Mary Frances Matzner, Grasham, Neb.; three grandchildren; and one great–grandson.
LOUISE PRICE
LAMAR — Funeral services for Louise Price will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 16, 2003, at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Emanuel Simon, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Scarborough Grove cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Ms. Price died Saturday, April 12, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Lamar, a daughter of Ethel Jackson Price and the late Roosevelt Price.
She received her formal education in the Lamar public schools and worked as a farmer and domestic worker.
Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Ethel J. Price of Lamar; her companion of 35 years, Marion Goodman and his children; five children, Larry (Bernice) Price, Frank Price, Trellis Price, all of Lamar, Dianne Price Anderson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Albert Price of Columbia; two sisters, Ellen Simon of Lamar and Rose Chasten of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; her twin brother, Louis Price of Darlington; eight grandchildren; one special grandson she reared as her own, Trellis Price Jr.; two great–grandchildren; a special niece she helped to rear as a daughter, Willie Mae Price of Columbia; other nieces, nephews and cousins. A sister, Helen Cherry, preceded her in death.
CLARENCE STOGNER
Graveside services for Clarence Lee Stogner, 83, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch officiating and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 949 N. Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Stogner died Saturday, April 12, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Katherine Gainey Stogner. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He served in the US Navy during World War II and was a civil contractor in Viet Nam. He was previously employed with J. A. Jones, Morrison–Knudsen and Nello–Teer Construction Companies.
Surviving are his wife, Chanie Stogner of Lexington; son and daughter–in–law, Lee and Rebecca Stogner of Taylors; daughter and son–in–law, Kathy and Steve Brewer of Sanford, N.C.; sisters and brother–in–law, Selma LeHardy of Hartsville, Kitty and Murch Somers of Summerville; brothers and sisters–in–law, Pinky and Peggy Stogner of Hartsville, Coker and Nancy Stogner of Isle of Palms; grandchildren, Will Stogner, Elizabeth Stogner, Daniel Arnold, Matthew Arnold and Stephen Brewer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae Byrd Stogner.
HOWARD PAUL LEE
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mr. Howard Paul Lee, 50, will be at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 16, at Salvation Temple Holiness Church, Elder George McElveen, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.
Mr. Lee died on Sunday, April 13 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was a son of Mrs Bertha Ratliff Lee and the late Mr. Otis Lee. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County, graduating from Lamar High School with the class of 1971. Soon after graduation, he moved to Parames, N.J., where he was employed with the Bergen Pines Hospital for 12 years before moving back to his native Darlington County.
Howard was a loving and kind person who will be missed by many as he moves on to his heavenly reward.
Surviving to cherish his memory, other than his mother, Mrs. Bertha Lee of the home, are five sisters, Sara (Elder George) McElveen and Grace(Conely) Shaw, both of Darlington, Hattie (Garrett) Sanders of Florence, Dianne (Corathers) Wright of Lamar and Betty (Donnie) Roderick of Columbia; three brothers, James, Isaac and George Lee, all of Darlington; two aunts, Mrs. Wille Ratliff of Lydia and Mrs. Lessie Lee of Lamar.
COLE LOVING
Graveside services for Cole Loving were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Rivers of Living Water Church cemetery with the Rev. Becky Boykin officiating and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home in charge.
Cole was born on Wednesday, April 9, 2003, and died Friday, April 11, 2003.
Surviving are his parents, Robbie and Nicole Hall Loving of Hartsville; brother, Garrett Loving of Hartsville; paternal grandparents, Billy and Joanne Priester of Hartsville, Robin Loving of North Platte, Neb.; maternal grandparents, Loyal and Diane Hall of Hartsville; paternal great–grandparents, Barbara Gates of Bishopville, James Stewart of Dyer, Ind.; maternal great–grandparents, Lamar and Ruby Parker of Hartsville; and paternal great–great grandmother, Vera Webb of Bishopville.

LAMAR — Mr. Willie Dukes died on Sunday, April, 13, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Funeral services are incomplete. Professional services have been entrusted to Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Lamar. The family will receive visitations at the residence.
MARION T. SPARROW
Funeral services for Marion T. Sparrow, 82, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Drs. Gary Colboch and Milton G. Frazier officiating. Burial was held in Westview Memorial cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Sparrow died Wednesday, April 9. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jessie D. and Norma Gandy Sparrow. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 42 years of services, a member of the Old Timers Club, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Living Hope Sunday School Class and a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Johnson Sparrow of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Demetra (Dick) Moore; son and daughter–in–law, James (Jane) Sparrow, all of Hartsville; a sister, Hazel Dorrell of Columbia; four grandchildren, Karen Heustess, Butch Moore, Scott and Todd Beasley, all of Hartsville; and nine great–grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Dickie Moore; a sister, Jessie Mae Sparrow and brothers, Cecil, Ellie and J. D. Sparrow.

JACKIE C. SANDERS
BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Jackie Clyde Sanders, 65, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Whitner–Evans Funeral Home with burial in Hillside cemetery, Laurinburg, N.C.
Mr. Sanders died Wednesday, April 9. He was born in Hoke County, N.C., and was the son of the late June S. Sanders and Emma Britt Sanders Howe. He was the owner of Jack Sanders Auto Auction. He was an Eagle Scout and an Air Force veteran. He attended Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Smith Sanders of Bennettsville; two sons, Mike Sanders and Mark Davis, both of Tatum; three daughters, Britt Sanders of Bennettsville, Jackie Covington and Danielle Walker, both of Lauringburg, N.C.; a sister, June Sanders of Bennettsville; and two grandchildren, Jonathan Covington and James Michael Sanders.
GERALD KENNINGTON
CAMDEN — Funeral services for Gerald Glenwood Kennington, 56, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Visitation will be tonight, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Mr. Kennington died Monday, April 14. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Thomas Boykin (TB) and Ollie Junell McBee Kennington. He was retired from DuPont, a roofing contractor, graduate of Camden High School and enjoyed NASCAR racing.
Surviving are his wife, Lisa Smith Kennington of Camden; three sons, Chris (Dawn) Kennington of Hartsville, Shane Boykin Kennington and Tyler Glen Kennington of Camden; a daughter, Renee (Bobby) Blackwell of Bethune; three grandchildren, Kristopher, Megan and Dakota Blackwell of Bethune; two brothers, Thomas (Lynn) Kennington of Bishopville and Dale (Loretta) Kennington of Lugoff; three sisters, Debra (Frankie) Boan of Lugoff, Linda (Jim) Young of Bethune and Denise (Tim) Shirley of Camden; several nieces and nephews.
TERRY SAMUEL
Funeral services for Terry Samuel will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Salvation Temple Apostolic Holiness Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Ms. Samuel was the youngest child of Sam and Eliza Mae Samuel, who preceded her She attended Job Corp in Kentucky. She was unemployed at the time of her death.
She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Brandon Terrell Samuel and Christopher Alexander Williams of Hartsville; four sisters, Liz (Garrett) Freeman III of Darlington, Frankie Ridges of Coats, N.C., Linda Martin and Rachel Samuel, both of Hartsville; three brothers, Markham B. Samuel, Standford E. Samuel of Hartsville and Anthony (Gail) Samuel of Daytona Beach, Fla.; an uncle, Joseph (Mary) Lowery Sr. of Hartsville; an aunt, Clara Harris of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and a great–aunt, Mary Kelly of Hollis, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
RICHARD A. COKER
WAYNESVILLE N.C. — Memorial services for Richard Amis Rick Coker, 67, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains. The Rev. Dr. Howard W. White Jr. will officiate. Interment will be at the church memorial gardens, directed by Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, N.C.
Mr. Coker died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Mission–St. Joseph Health System. He was born in Hartsville, and was the son of the late Richard Gay and Adelia Amis Coker. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Duncan Coker.
He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he became employed in the Coker family business, Sonoco Products Co. In September of 1961, he moved to Haywood County, where he was a co–founder and president of Cataloochee Ski Area.
Following the death of his father–in–law, Tom Alexander, he became president of Cataloochee Ranch. He was a former member of the North Carolina Travel Council, a former member of the board of directors of the National Ski Area Association, and was a past–president of the North Carolina Ski Area Association. He also enjoyed the breeding and showing of horses, which expanded to an additional part of his professional career. His hobbies also included travel and sailing.
He is survived by his wife, Betty McHenry Coker; two daughters, Judith Coker Sutton, of Jonathan Creek, N.C., and Mary Morton Coker of White Oak, N.C.; two step–daughters, Katherine Pate of Hartsville, and Kristina Hanson of Charlotte; one son, Richard A. Coker Jr. of Maggie Valley, N.C.; one sister, Louise Ewing of Mexico and Blowing Rock, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Another reception will be held at Cataloochee Ranch following the visitation at the church.
