AMANDA RHODES

Funeral services for Amanda Shumate Rhodes, 89, were held at 5 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Praise Temple with the Rev. J. L. Dutton officiating. Entombment was in Westview Memorial Park, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rhodes, widow of James T. Rhodes Sr., died Saturday, March 29. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Andrew and Florrie Gainey Shumate. She was a member of Praise Temple.

Surviving are five daughters, Sylvia Ann Woods, Delorse Rhodes, Betty Huggins, Judy Mixon, all of Hartsville, and Marsha Chavis of Huntsville, Ala.; three sons, Elvis, Jimmy and Larry Rhodes, all of Hartsville; two brothers, Joy A. Shumate Sr. and Harvey Shumate, both of Hartsville; 19 grandchildren; several great– and great–great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

LOUISE M. HARRELSON

MULLINS — Funeral services for Louise Martin Harrelson, 90, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Millers United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Laura Gasque officiating. Burial followed in Millers Untied Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Cox–Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.

Mrs. Harrelson, widow of John Crosland Harrelson, died Saturday, March 29, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville after an illness. She was born June 24, 1912, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Eddie and Lula Perritt Martin. She was a wife, mother and grandmother. She lived most of her life in Mullins and resided at Morningside Assisted Living in Hartsville for the past three years. Mrs. Harrelson was a member of Millers United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a former member of the Millers Home Demonstration Club, the Scotch Grange and the Florabunda Garden Club.

Surviving are her daughters and sons–in–laws, Sylvia H. and S. B. Norwood Jr. of Hartsville, Shirley H. and Ernest E. Ford of Little River, Nancy H. and James H. Lehmann of Sanford, N.C. and Johnsie H. and A.C. Page Jr. of Spartanburg; her grandchildren, Bart (Janet) Norwood III, Stephen H. (Terry) Norwood, Allison C. Norwood, Sharon Beeson (Dudley) Beaty, Richard Jay (Tammy) Beeson, Laurie L. Beeson, Lynne Lehmann (Kirven) Slade, Susan Lehmann (Tom) Hincks, Ginger Page (Thomas) Ketchen and Andrew David Page III; 16 great–grandchildren.

Mrs. Harrelson was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her siblings, Truman, Lanneau, Sandy, Charlie, Ruth, Lillie, Grace and Margaret.

ADDISON B. LYON

On Saturday, March 29, 2003, Addison Brose Lyon passed away peacefully after a long illness.

Mr. Lyon was born on Oct. 11, 1911, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late Dr. Frank Kane Lyon and his wife, Anna Barbara. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1935, and shortly thereafter married Agnes Ewing.

Mr. Lyon worked for the federal government as a forester for 30 years in the state of Virginia. He was also the co–founder of the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association. He served with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., for 20 years. He and his wife moved to Darlington in 1981 where they enjoyed retirement and the company of their children and grandchildren.

Mr. Lyon was predeceased by his wife, Agnes. His memory will be cherished by his daughter Mary L. Greene; a son, Frank P. Lyon Sr. and daughter–in–law, Helen; granddaughters, Michelle and Nichole Greene, Frank P. (Juliette) Lyon Jr., Katherine Coker, Rebecca (Kyle) Jernigan, David (Debbie) Lyon, as well as six great–grandchildren, Brandy Coker, Christopher Coker, Todd Coker, Lee Thomasson, Tyler Jernigan and Miranda Lyon.

A small private service will be held in Parsons, W.Va.

Memorials may be made to the University of Georgia Educational Fund, 824 S. Milledge Ave., Athens, GA. 30602; and Tucker County High School, Rt. 1 Box 152, Hambleton, WV 26269.

LUCILLE CUTLER

CAMDEN — Funeral services or Mary Lucille Young Cutler, 77, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Lakeview Baptist Church in Camden with the Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association of S.C., 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 205, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mrs. Cutler died Friday, March 28. Born in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late Jack C. and Ruby Connell Young. She was retired from Insurance Services of Camden as a bookkeeper. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Lakeview Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, William Albert Cutler; a daughter, Diane C. (Chuck) Hearn of Charlotte, N.C.; sons, Michael Y. (Drusilla B.) Cutler of Lugoff, Stephen Orlando (Julie) Cutler of Austin, Texas, Kenneth M. (Becky) Cutler of Camden, and a daughter in law, Carol Cutler of Morristown, Tenn.; grandchildren, Wendy Miller, Lee Cutler, Shaun Cutler, Jennifer Keefer, Stephen Cutler Jr., Jonathan Hearn, Catherine Hearn, Chris Cutler, Andrea Cutler and Jason Cutler; great–grandchildren, Michael Kane White and Gage Miller; and a sister, Cissy Howle of Hartsville. She was predeceased by a son, Jack Timothy Cutler.

ESTELLE BROCKINGTON

Funeral services for Estelle Brockington, 81, were held at 3:30 pm. Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brockington died Saturday, March 22, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late John McCain and Nora Lucky. She received her education in the public schools of Lee County and was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Moses Simpkins; a sister, Ella Cook of Sumter; granddaughter, Evelyn Ratliff of Hartsville; great–granddaughter, Shemekia Ratliff; great–great–granddaughter, Kimberly Johnson, both of Hartsville; two sisters, Lizzie Robinson and Dot Benjamin, also of Hartsville.

BOB NORTHCUTT

Graveside services for Robert Richard Bob Northcutt Sr., 78, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery with the Revs. Kenneth W. Phelps and Dr. Bob Cline officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Northcutt died Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Timothy Benjamin and Carrie King Northcutt. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church, and served in the Army during World War II, receiving the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. With a life–long love of car dealing and fellowship, Bob was a regular welcomed face at Clanton's Auto Sales for more than 50 years.

Surviving are his wife, Joanne Northcutt of Hartsville; son, Robert Richard Richey Northcutt Jr. of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Terri N. and Tommy Woodham of Bishopville, Sherrill Northcutt of Charlotte, Hayley N. and Fred Rourk of Pawley's Island; sisters, Mary N. McKenzie of Bishopville, Bee N. Ham of Hartsville; brothers, Timothy Benjamin Northcutt II of Hartsville, Abbie Northcutt of Macon, Ga.; grandchildren, Kerri W. Pennington of Hartsville, Kacy Woodham, Kate Woodham, Alston Woodham, Harlee Northcutt, Daniel Rourk and Noah Rourk.

EDGAR SOWELL

Funeral services for Edgar L. Sowell, 85, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge with the Rev. Billy Campbell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Sowell died Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late John Purdy and Sarah Knight Sowell. He was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge and had served as the Sunday School director. He served in the U. S. Marines during World War II. He was a local businessman in Pine Ridge and was very active in the community.

Surviving are his wife, Beady Mae Lynch Sowell of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Rhonda and Jimmy Watkins of Darlington, Glenda and Cam Powers of Hartsville; brothers and sisters–in–law, the Rev. Paul and Iva Sowell and Kenneth and Patsy Ann Sowell, all of McBee; grandchildren, Terry Sowell Jr., Melissa Heiden, Shannon Copes, Brandis Watkins, Ray Gardner Jr., Summer Gardner; great–grandchildren, Trey Sowell, Taylor Sowell, Graham Copes, Dalton Gardner and Shyanne Cranford. He was preceded in death by his son, Terry Sowell.

TECOLA RIVERS

Funeral services for Tecola Holley Rivers, 89, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Don Purvis officiating. Burial followed at Zoar United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Rivers, widow of Blease Rivers, died Monday, March 24, 2003. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Virgil and Annie Elizabeth Holley. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Stewart L. and Joan Rivers of Greenville; daughter and son–in–law, Alice and Gene Welborn of Cheraw; brother, Henry Holley of Clearwater, Fla.; sister, Mary Johnson of Clinton; nine grandchildren, 14 great–grandchildren and several great–great–grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William R. Rivers.

LORRAINE TRUNCELLITO

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lorraine Colilla Truncellito, 73, were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Truncellito died Tuesday, March 25, at her home after an illness. She was born in Hudson County, N. J., a daughter of the late Peter and Lillian Lydecker Colilla. She was married to the late Anthony Truncellito. She was a housewife and member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Surviving are four sons, Bernard Yucker of Brick, N.J., Paul Truncellito of Darlington, Anthony Truncellito Jr. of Hamilton, N.J., and Michael Yucker of Florence; eight daughters, Laurie Bright of Darlington, Shirley Arlauskas of Rutherford, N.J., Elizabeth Frances of East Windsor, N.J., Sharon Yucker of Midland Park, N.J., Mary Cooper of New River, Va., Toni Ann Yucker of Garfield, N.J., Elaine Truncellito and Crisann Smith, both of Darlington; 19 grandchildren; 11 great–grandchildren; one geat–great–grandchild; and a number of step–grandchildren; one brother, Robert Colilla of Darlington; and one sister, Joyce Dodge of Florence.

Mrs. Truncellito was preceded in death by two daughters, Florence Grafeld and Debra Yucker, a son, Robert Yucker, and a brother, Ralph Colilla.

SALLY R. LEWIS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Sally Rhodes Lewis, 82, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 28, 2003, in High Hill Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Bob Thomas. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lewis died Wednesday, March 26, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Joseph Eli and Cora Bass Rhodes. She was married to the late Leon V. Lewis. She retired from Dixie Cup and was a member of High Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Eddie (Mary) Lewis of Timmonsville, Robert (Sarah) Lewis and Ray (Babs) Lewis, both of Darlington; one daughter, Sandra L. Nance, also of Darlington; 10 grandchildren and 15 great–grandchildren.

JEROME BENJAMIN

Funeral services for Jerome Bo Benjamin were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003 in Jerusalem Baptist Chruch with the Rev. Isaac Johnson, officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mr. Benjamin died Tuesday, March 18, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Mayesville Dot Benjamin and the late Frank Benjamin Sr. He was educated in public schools, graduating from Butler High School in 1970. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army where he received a honorable discharge. He was employed for Sara Lee Hosiery for over 25 years. He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Survivors are his mother, Dot Benjamin of Hartsville; three children, Ericka Kind, and Stacy Martin, both of Hartsville and Traun (Rosetta) Pate of McBee; two brothers, Frank Benjamin Jr. of Quinby and Jerry Benjamin of Elgin; three sisters, Mazie Benjamin and Elizabeth Benjamin, both of Hatsville and Maxcine (Willie) Cobb of Smyrna, Ga.; two grandchildren; six aunts and one sister–in–law.

LOUIS S. THOMAS

Louis Stedman Thomas died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in Charlotte, N.C., after an illness. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2003 in Florence National cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

BRANDY MOZINGO

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Elizabeth Brandon Brandy Mozingo, 31, will be held at 4 p.m. today, March 26, 2003 in Calvary Tabernacle officiated by the Rev. Jim Baker and the Rev. Allen Lynch. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Miss Mozingo died Monday, March 24, in a Darlington hospital. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of Frank L. and Brenda Wilkerson Mozingo. She was a graduate of Darlington Career Center and competed in the Special Olympics, winning a gold meda. She was a member of Calvary Tabernacle and Vision Assembly.

Surviving are her parents of Darlington; brothers, Frank L. (Linda) Mozingo and Marty Mozingo of Darlington; and two sisters, Chelsey Mozingo and Casey Mozingo, both of the home.

Miss Mozingo was preceded in death by grandparents, Senator Spot and Cady Mozingo and Paul and Alice Wilkerson.

Memorials are suggested to the Special Children's Ministry, c/o Vision Assembly, 749 Wire Road, Darlington, SC 29532.

DAN COKER

Funeral services for Daniel Hollis Coker, 65, were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003 at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia SC 29202.

Mr. Coker died Friday, March 21, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Annie Hollis Coker and the late James Reaves Coker. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hartsville. He was the owner and operator of Fifth Street Cleaners. He served on the board of First Federal Savings and Loan Association, was a past president of the Hartsville Jaycees, a member of the Hartsville Planning Board, past president of the Red Fox Club, a member of the Kiwanis Club, and the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid golfer, a club champion at Hartsville Country Club for two years, and Carolina's Four Ball Champion. He was also a member of the B & F club of Hartsville.

Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; wife, Margaret Bryan Coker of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Dan and Becky Coker, Jr. of Asheville, N.C., Dick and Jackie Coker of Hartsville, and David and Tena Coker of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Kathy C. and Dr. Luke Baxley of Hartsville; sisters and brothers–in–law, Anne C. and Tobe Garrett of Simpsonville, S.C., Fran C. and Steve Clark of Pageland, S.C., Carolyn C. and Bill Moore of Spartanburg, S.C.; brothers and sisters–in–law, Jim R. and Linda Coker, Jr. of Landrum, S.C., Bob W. and Carole Coker of Taylor, S.C., Sam R. and Kay Coker of Lake Murray, S.C.; brother–in–law, Blair Bryan of Hartsville; and eight grandchildren.
