DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Eddie Kuta Monk Damon will be held at 12 noon today, March 21, 2003, in Chaney Grove Baptist Church, Timmonsville, with the Rev. Darrall Frazier, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Damon died Friday, March 14, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Lamar, a son of the late Luther and Della Samuel Damon. He was the widower of Lillian Fitzgerald Damon. He received his formal education in the Lamar area schools and at an early age joined Chaney Grove Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. As a young adult, he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and was employed at New York Feathers from which he retired in 1983. He relocated to Darlington in 1989 and rejoined Chaney Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving include a son, Harry Carter of Baltimore, Md.; sister–in–law, Mrs. Catherine F. Fowlkes of Virginia; 12 grandchildren (four of which he reared as his own) Kareem Damon, Terrance Damon, Lakeam (Darnel) Jones and Kareem Jones; other grandchildren, Shameka Damon, Sharron Damon, Eric Jones, Derrick (Ericka) Jones, Harry Carter Jr., Michelle Carter, Shawn Carter and Shatera Bradley; four nephews; one niece; cousins and 12 great–grandchildren.
LEATHA MAE BAKER
NEWARK, N.J. — Leatha Mae Baker, 70, formerly of Hartsville, died Tuesday, March 19, 2003. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
BOYD GAINEY
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Boyd Gainey, 63, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Hatchell officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be this evening, Wednesday, from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
Mr. Gainey died Monday, March 17. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Elwood E. and Lizzie Davis Gainey.
Surviving are sons, Brian Gainey of Society Hill and Eric Gainey of Chesterfield; step–son, Larry Tyndall of Bennettsville; daughters, Barbara Gaskins of Chesterfield and Sandra Jones of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; a sister, Sophia Fraley of Richfleld, N.C.; three brothers, Kenny Gainey of Concord, N.C., Otis Gainey of Society Hill and Aaron Tucker of Albermarle, N.C.
SIDNEY SMALL
DARLINGTON — A private memorial service for Sidney Small, 63, was held at 12 noon, on Monday, March 17, 2003, in Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Small died Thursday, March 13, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. He was born in North Carolina, a son of the late Wesley and Melissa McDougal Small. He lived in Philadelphia, Pa., most of his life and relocated to Darlington about a year ago.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vermella Kelly Small of the home; five children; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Small White of Darlington; two brothers, Wesley Small Jr. and Autry Small, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren; one aunt, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
MALVIN GOODALE
Funeral services for Malvin Stanley Goodale, 79, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2003, at Souls Harbor with the Revs. Wayne Windham and Mack Evans officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Goodale died Friday, March 14, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Ada Christmas Goodale. He attended Soul's Harbor, retired from Sonoco, and was currently employed as a Security Guard at Wellman.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Steen Goodale of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Michael and Lisa Goodale and Randy and Valerie Goodale, all of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Janet G. and David Ikner of Conway; sister, Gladys Walters of Florence; brother, Quinton Goodale of Murrell's Inlet; grandchildren, Brandy Baker, B. J. Baricska, Nicole Goodale and Anthony Goodale.
ANNIE LEE EDWARDS
Funeral services for Annie Lee Cooley Edwards, 94, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Surrett officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church Building Fund, 145 East College Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Edwards, widow of G. Lever Edwards, died Friday, March 14, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Wister Winston and Eva Lee Cooley. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and served many years as the minister of music and choir director. She graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music and taught piano for more 60 years. She was a member of the Pinelake Garden Club and the Hartsville Music Club. She was inducted into the Lifetime National Music Club.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, John Monk and Susan Edwards of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Lu and Mendel Smith Jr. of Greenville; grandchildren, Mendel D. Smith III and Marianne Martin; and great–grandchild, Mary Wallace Martin.
WILDA J. GRAY
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Wilda Jenkins Gray, 84, were held at 11 a.m. Monday March 17, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment was at 4:30 p.m. in Great Salkehatchie cemetery, Ulmer, S.C., directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Gray was born in Kline, S.C., in Barnwell County, the son of the late Wilda Derecott and Odell Jenkins Gray. He was a graduate of Allendale High School and Clemson College. He served his country in the United States Army for four and a half years. He served as County Extension Agent for Clemson in Horry and Darlington Counties, retiring in 1975. Mr. Gray received his Distinguished Service Award in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1966. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Myra Wilkinson Gray of Darlington; two sons and daughters–in–law, Wilda J. and Shirley Gray Jr. of Timmonsville, Duane W. and Claudia Gray of Darlington; four grandsons, Kirk (Cindy) Gray of Florence. Kevin Gray of Aynor, Brad (Renee) Gray also of Aynor and Quinton Gray of Darlington; also four great–grandchildren.
Mr. Gray was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Emory Gray, in 1978.

FLETCHER J. BACOTE
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Fletcher James Bacote were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonah Booth, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Round–O Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bacote died Thursday, March 13, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County (Society Hill area) a daughter of the late Adoulphus and Dora Williamson James.
She received her formal education in Darlington County public school. At an early age, she joined Flat Creek Baptist Church. In 1943, she and her family moved to Winston–Salem, N.C., and later to Brooklyn, N.Y. There, she joined Holy Trinity Baptist Church and served as a member of the Pastor's Aide. In 1981, she returned to Darlington and rejoined Flat Creek Baptist Church.
She was married
twice, first to Jessie Bacote and this union was blessed with two children, one of whom, a son, Carey Allen, preceded her in death. Years later she married
the late Aubrey Jackson.
Survivors include a daughter, Ernestine Bacote of Queens, N.Y.; daughter–in–law, Hattie Bacote of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Kelvin Bacote, Kenneth Bacote, Anthony Bacote, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Irish Haynes of Queens, N.Y.; 14 great–grandchildren; one great–great–grandchild; two sisters–in–law, Mrs. Rozell James of Leigh Acres, Fla., and Mrs. Venice Spears of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
WILLIE MAE LAFFODAY
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Willie Mae Saverance Laffoday, 98, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2003, in Newman Swamp cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Laffoday died Wednesday, March 12, in a Florence nursing center after an extended illness. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late William H. and Elizabeth Mozingo Saverance. She was married
to the late Charlie Laffoday. Mrs. Laffoday was a lifelong resident of Darlington County and was educated in the Darlington County Schools. She continued her formal education at Winthrop College. She then returned to teach for more than 30 years in the Darlington and Florence County school systems. During those 30 years, she received numerous awards for her teaching. She was a member of Newman Swamp Southern Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Sara Lee Gardner of Florence and Urcel Dunyach of New Jersey; a niece, Sara G. Walker of Florence; a step–son, S.K. Laffoday of Stone Mountain, Ga., and a step–daughter, Elma Lee DuBose of Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Laffoday was preceded in death by a brother, William Saverence, and a sister, Dot Saverance.

ERNEST HOLT
LAMAR — Funeral services for Ernest Lee Holt, 79, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Lamar, with interment following in Lamar cemetery.
Mr. Holt died Thursday, March 13, in a Hartsville nursing center. He was born in Troy, N.C., son of the late Sylvester and Velvie Vanhoy Holt. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. Mr. Holt was a retired machinist with Nytronics, Inc., and was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline Polly Atkinson Holt of Lamar; son and daughter–in–law, Michael and Shirley Holt of Charleston; daughter and son–in–law, Linda and Linwood Register of Marietta, Ga.; grandsons, Mark and Lee Register; granddaughters, Jennifer Holt and Lisa Holt Hall; great–grandson, Elisha James Hall; and a brother and sister–in–law, Clay and Mildred Holt of Camden.

ISARLEE GRUBBS
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Isarlee Bowers Stephens Grubbs, 90, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, in High Hill Truelight Church cemetery in Lee County, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Grubbs died Friday, March 14, in a Hartsville hospital. She was born in Shephard, S.C., daughter of the late Ervin and Molly Hall Bowers. She was a housewife and member of Shiloh Truelight Church in Mint Hill, N.C.
Surviving are four sons, Henry Rivers Stephens Jr. of N. Myrtle Beach, Harrison A. Stephens and Charlie Stephens, both of Darlington, Dupree Stephens of Lenoir, N.C.; one daughter, Carolyn S. Thomas of Darlington; nine grandchildren and 13 great–grandchildren; three sisters, Myrtle Hunter of Rock Hill, Elaine Poston of McBee and Doris Dixon of Chesterfield.
ANGELA M. SMITH
Funeral services for Angela McDonald Smith, 43, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2003, in the Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with pastor Janie Wilds officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Smith died Monday, March 17, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Annie Jo Murray and Elijah Arnold. At an early age she joined Second Baptist Church and was a 1978 graduate of Butler High School.
Surviving other than her mother and father, both of Hartsville, are a daughter, Faith Tyleshia Jackson of Hartsville; her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Lucas of Hartsville; three sisters, Phyleshia Murry and Shelley Davis, both of Hartsville and Michelle Walker of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Donald Williams of Hartsville; three aunts, Martha (the Rev. Monel) Smith, Ernestine Arnold and Mildred White, all of Hartsville; and two uncles, Weldon C. Lucas and Claudel Arnold, both of Hartsville.
EDITH G. HANEY
Funeral services for Edith G. Haney, 79, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Mt. Elon Baptist Church with the Rev. Dora Gafford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Haney, widow of Frank Haney Jr., died Monday, March 10. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Duncan and Naomi Fields Galloway.
She was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the WAC. She retired from Sara Lee Hosiery.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald D. Haney of Hartsville and Danny Ray Haney of Darlington; one sister, Modine G. Shramm of Hartsville; five grandchildren and one great–grandchild.
THELMA MAY MORGAN
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Thelma May Morgan, 76, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Morgan died Friday, March 7, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Johnson County, Ga., daughter of the late James and Emma May. She attended Indian Branch United Methodist Church.
Surviving is a son, Jesse (Gracie) Morgan of Darlington; one brother, William May of Kite, Ga.; a granddaughter, Sandy Leggett of Fairmont; two grandsons, Jessie Eddie Morgan and Johnathan Johnny Morgan, both of Darlington; five great–grandchildren; and a special friend, Tammy Stengal of Darlington.
