LAMAR — Funeral services for Myrtle Grooms Freeman, 70, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, at Lamar Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Freeman died Saturday, March 8, at her residence. She was born in Anson County, Ga., daughter of the late William T. and Elizabeth Ratliff Grooms. Mrs. Freeman worked as nurses aid at local nursing homes. She attended Lamar Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, James (Wendy) Knotts and Myrtis (Fran) Knotts, both of Lamar; one sister, Margaret Mancill of Lamar; two brothers, Vernon Grooms and Walter Grooms, both of Lamar; four grandchildren and two great–grandchildren; also two special friends, Kathy Lane and April Young.
Mrs. Freeman was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Davis; a son, Barry Knotts; three brothers, James Prentic Groom, Edwin Allen Grooms and William Thomas Grooms.
ROBERT M. WALKUP
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Robert Morrow Walkup, 74, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in the Stoudenmire–Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in the Mount Hope cemetery Mausoleum.
Mr. Walkup died Sunday afternoon, March 9, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Waxhaw, N.C., a son of the late William Albert and Lucille Sistair Walkup. He was a member of the Swamp Fox Tractor and Engine Club, a member of the Sand Hill Antique Tractor Pulling Association, a member of St. David's Lodge No. 72 A.F.M. and a member of the Tirzah Presbyterian Church in Waxhaw. He was the former owner of Walkup's Inc. of Darlington, had retired after 25 years as a trucking owner–operator and was the owner of Walkup Saw Sharpening and Small Engines of Pamplico.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Hataway Walkup of Florence; four sons, James R. (Linda) Walkup of Darlington, William A. (Brenda) Walkup of Hartsville, John T. (Terry) Walkup of Florence and David W. (Laura Kay) Walkup of Pamplico; one brother, Hazel (Betty) Walkup of Waxhaw, N.C.; one sister, Iva M. (Harold) Noles of Waxhaw, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and three great–grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue N., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577 or to the McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
EVA P. HATCHELL
TIMMONSVILLE — Funeral services for Eva Powers Hatchell, 90, were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2003, at Lake Swamp Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery, directed by Layton–Anderson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hatchell died Thursday, March 6, after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Robert E. and Clara Ward Powers. She was a homemaker and was a member of Lake Swamp Baptist Church. She was first married
to the late Glenn C. Hatchell and her second marriage was to the late Ivy Hatchell.
Surviving are a son, Glenn C. (Diann) Hatchell Jr. of Timmonsville; three daughters, Dorothy H. (Jack) Gardner of Bishopville, Jennie Kelly of Charleston and Gloria (James) Campbell of Lamar; two brothers, Tom Powers and M. G. Powers of Timmonsville; 10 grandchildren; 18 great–grandchildren and four great–great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Grace Powers, and three brothers, Raleigh, Walter and Ira Powers.
Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence or Darlington County Council on the Aging, 402 Pearl St., Darlington, SC 29532.
MERLIE WILLIAMS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Merlie Williams, 103, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Lawson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Marion Newton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Williams died Saturday, March 8, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington county, a daughter of the late Richard and Lili Evans Arthur. She was the widow of Barney Williams Sr.
She was a member of Lawson Grove Baptist Church where she served on the Gospel Choir, the Missionary Society and in any other capacity when needed. In the community, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Snow Hill Chapter No. 312.
She was preceded in death by three children, Beasley, Luther B. and Lillie Mae.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mae Donia (James) McFadden of Darlington; six sons, Levern (Charlena) Williams, the Rev. P. W. (Gertrude) Williams, Roosevelt (Van Jo) Williams, all of Darlington, Barney (Victoria) Williams Jr. of Winston–Salem, N.C., Frank (Valencia) Williams and Charles Edward (Delores) Williams, both of New York; 42 grandchildren, 98 great–grandchildren; 35 great–great–grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins.
Wake services will be at 7 this evening, March 12, at the funeral home with Eastern Star Rites, and at other times the family will receive friends at the residence, 1044 Williams Drive, Darlington.
EARL TRAMMELL
Graveside services for Earl C. Trammell, 64, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Steve Zimmerman will officiate, and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends this evening, Wednesday, March 12, 2003 from 5–7 at the funeral home and at other times at the Steve Weatherford residence, 2321 E. Lydia Highway. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
Mr. Trammell died Saturday, March 8, 2003. Born in Waco, Texas, he was a son of the late Ray and Pearl Williams Trammell. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from General Motors with 33 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Rita Geick Trammell of Holly, Mich.; son and daughter–in–law, Dean and Tonya Trammell of Burton, Mich.; daughter and son–in–law, Lori and Brad Taljonick of Indianapolis, Ind.; step–sons and spouse, Grady Allen Weatherford, Jr. of Darlington, Steve and Kim Weatherford of Darlington; step–daughter, Elaine Weatherford of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Jack Taljonick, Addie Taljonick; step–grandchildren, Steve A. Weatherford, Michael A. Weatherford, Bethany Weatherford, Shantel Trammell and Ricky Trammell.
WILLIE B. DUKES
LAMAR — Funeral services for Willie B. Dukes will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, April 18, 2003, in Mary Magdeline Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Dukes died Sunday, April 13, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Lamar, to the late Charlden and Georgia Dukes. He was educated in the public schools and worked for more than 30 years with Schalers and Weber Meat Company.
Survivors are a son, Robert Dukes of New Jersey; three daughters, Maxine Dukes of New York, Dianne Dukes and Linda Dukes, both of Ohio; six sisters, Luvenia Mitchell, Ella McCullough, Odell Kirkland, Lucille Virgil and Elizabeth Goodman, all of Lamar, and Mary Lucky of Nichols.
CYNTHIA R. SHAY
FRANKLIN, Pa. — Funeral services for Cynthia Ellen Reitz Shay, 87, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with the Rev. Gregory Beeman of the church officiating, assisted by Mrs. Shay's son, the Rev. Donald D. Reitz. Interment was held in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens, directed by Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge of local announcements.
Mrs. Shay died Friday, April 4, in The Caring Place. Born Oct. 7, 1915, in Indiana County, she was a daughter of Russell Jacob and Mary Caroline Hancock Stewart. She was a homemaker and a representative of Stanley Home Products.
Mrs. Shay was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Franklin and was active in the church, enjoying many church activities.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great–grandmother.
She was first married
Sept. 27, 1935 to Ralph Clair Reitz, who preceded her in death Jan. 30, 1975. She was married
Aug. 1, 1981 to Ellis Allan Shay, who preceded her in death Nov. 9, 1982.
Surviving are four sons and wives, Russell (Marie) Reitz of Williamsport, Donald and Linda Reitz of Watsontown, Lester (Carol Ann) Reitz of Franklin, and Arthur (Christine) Reitz of Mifflinville; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Elizabeth Reitz) Vogan of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren, Kevin Reitz of Montoursville, Scott Reitz and Tasha Reitz, both of Mifflinville, Lyndon Vogan of Hartsville, Mrs. Mark (Vanessa Vogan) Kinnear of Hartsville, Mrs. Gary (Kathy Reitz) Eggerton of Williamsport, Keith Reitz of Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Bruce (Rachel Reitz) Wilkins, Ruth Reitz and Daniel Reitz, all of Watsontown, Stephen Reitz of Millersville, and Chandra Reitz and Chad Reitz of Franklin; and 13 great–grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Stewart, Vernon Stewart, Albert Stewart and Elmer Stewart, and a sister, Millicent Black.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 1200 Otter St., Franklin, PA or the Caring Place, 103 N. 13th St., Franklin, PA 16323.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Carl Humbert Young Jr., 62, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in a Washington, D.C., hospital after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.
PETER KELLY JR.
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Peter Kelly Jr., 82, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Bethel Baptist Church in Cash, S.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Kelly died Tuesday, June 3, in the V.A. Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Carthage, N.C., a son of the late Peter and Ida Wallace Kelly. He was educated in Carthage, Pinckney High School System in North Carolina.
Mr. Kelly attended Bethel Baptist Church. He was self employed as an independent truck driver for more than 60 years. He was founder of Allboro Contractors Trucking Company in Brooklyn, N.Y., P & S Kelly Trucking and Son and Shirley's Lounge in Society Hill. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley O. Kelly of Society Hill; four children, Vincent M. Oneal (Miranda) of Fayetteville, N.C, U.A. Army Master Sgt. Gladys E. Kelly of Columbia and S. C. Highway Patrol Lt. Darryl A. Kelly (Chrystal) of Florence; three sisters, Mary Kelly Foxx, Gladys Kelly Brower of Charlotte, N.C., Christine Kelly Smith of Atlantic City, N.J.; grandchildren, Crystal T. Oneal, Alisha R. Kelly, Courtney C. Kelly, Darryl A. Kelly Jr., Vinecia Oneal and Kiera S. Oneal and other close relatives and friends. Mr. Kelly was predeceased by a daughter, Denise A Kelly.
Viewing of the body will be at Groom Funeral Home in Cheraw tonight, June 6, from 5–9, and the family will receive friends from 7–8 p.m.
WILLIAM WILSON
DARLINGTON — A memorial service for William Bill Frazier Wilson, 79, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Central Baptist Church in Darlington, officiated by the Rev. Timothy Coker, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Wilson died Thursday, May 22, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Greensboro, N.C., a son of the late Lewis Holiday Wilson and Margaret Phoenix Wilson. He served his country in the Air Force during World War II. Mr. Wilson was a Mason and a member of Central Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cunningham Wilson of Darlington; three sons, William Frazier Wilson Jr. of Lithovia, Ga., Stephen Hayne Wilson of Mt. Pleasant and William Russell Wilson of Darlington; and four grandchildren, Brian, Lisa, Stephen and Jennifer Wilson.
WILLIE SMITH
Funeral services for Willie Smith, 76, will be held at 1 p.m. today, June 6, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery in Society Hill, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Monday, June 2, in McLeod Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Will and Clara Brown Smith. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church and received his education in the public schools of Darlington County.
Surviving are a daughter, Clara Phillips of Darlington; a sister, Maggie (Jay) Sanders of Ansonia, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.
LEVERN BYRD
Funeral services for Levern Byrd, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with burial in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Byrd died Monday, June 2, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late, Hendrix and Geneva Mack Byrd.
Surviving are a daughter, Geneva Ellerbe of Hartsville; a son, James (Olene) Byrd of Hartsville; a step–son, Levern Graham of Ansonia, Conn.; two sisters, Ruth Nickelson and Janny Mae (James) Woodham, both of Hartsville; nine grandchildren and 25 great–grandchildren.
JEFF H. BRYANT
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Jeff Howard Bryant, 83, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 5, in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Bryant was born in Darlington County, son of the late J. Davis and Marie Flowers Bryant. He was a member of the First Church of God. Surviving are his wife, Greta Elizabeth Register Bryant, of the home; four sons, Jeff Howard Jerry (Sandra) Bryant of Darlington, Jerald Lawrence (Dianne) Bryant of Florence, George Walter (Becky) Bryant and Mickey Lee Bryant, all of Darlington; one daughter, Linda Bryant (Steve) Crosby of Darlington; 11 grandchildren and 10 great–grandchildren.
Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by three brothers, Olin Bryant, Ellis Bryant and Mack Bryant, and two sisters, Emogena Pelletier and Lois Bradley.
