RAY LEE WATERS

Funeral services for Ray Lee Waters were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Mt. Calvary AME Church. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mr. Waters died Sunday, June 1, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Edward L. and Susie McIver Waters. He was educated in the public schools and worked for Dudley Paint for 20 years as a supervisor. He was married to Ruth Jeffery Waters.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the home, include a daughter, Fran (Sylvester) Knox of Columbia; three sisters, Cora Hawkins, Hattie Waters and Edna Waters of Hartsville; three brothers, Wellington W. (Bertha) of Springdale, Md., Emory (Virginia) Waters of Mitchellville, Md. and Joseph (Brenda) Waters of Newark, N.J.; two sisters–in–law, Evelyn Thomas of Hartsville and Bernice Waters of Spartanburg; three grandchildren, Bryan, Brett and Shalita Knox, all of Columbia.

WALTER GROOMS

LAMAR — Funeral services for Walter Lee Grooms, 76, were held at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, in Lamar Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Grooms died Tuesday, June 3. He was born in Livesville, N.C., a son of the late Tom and Elizabeth Grooms. He was a retired truck driver and was a member of Lamar Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Ham Grooms of the home; four sons, Timothy (Angela) Grooms, Wayne Grooms, Ricky Grooms and Steve Grooms; one daughter, Loretta (Marty) Watford; a brother, Vernon Grooms; a sister, Margaret Mancill and four grandchildren.

Mr. Grooms was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Grooms, Prentice Grooms and Allen Grooms; one sister, Myrtle Freeman; and a son, Robbie Grooms.

JOSEPHINE COTTON

Funeral services for Josephine Cotton, 63, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Ms. Cotton died Tuesday, May 27, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Ben and Emmie Richardson Cotton Jr. She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church and was educated in Darlington County public schools.

Surviving are four sisters, Rosa Cotton, Almata Sims, Helen Cotton and Ellen Cotton, all of Darlington.

DORIS WILLIAMS

Graveside services for Doris Ward Williams, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery . The Rev. Peter Rivera will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends this evening, Friday, June 6, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Willams, widow of Billy Williams, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Olive Flowers Ward. She was a member of the Swift Creek Baptist Church and the JoAnn Lee Sunday School class, and she was a former Sunday school teacher. She also was a member of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Wes and Cindy Williams of West Chester, Pa., Kenny and Sandy Williams of Aynor; daughter and son–in–law, Celeste and Glenn Pete Bigham of Surfside Beach; grandchildren, Stephanie Williams, Cale Williams, Josh Williams, Sherry Weible, Glenn Bigham; five great–grandchildren; and one great–great–grandchild.

SARAH ZEMP

Memorial services for Sarah Zemp, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, June 6, 2003, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Father Ted Duvall will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, PO Box 427, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mrs. Zemp died Friday, May 30, 2003. Born in Clarendon County, near Paxville, she was a daughter of the late James Ellis Hodge and Loretta Baker Brunson. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Sid and Madge Zemp of Hartsville, Bob Zemp of Petersburg, Va.; daughter and son–in–law, Rita and Joe Lannutti of Folly Beach; brothers, Jack Brunson of Cleveland, S.C., Robert Brunson of Salisbury, N.C., Mickey Brunson of Bradenton, Fla.; sisters, Frances Denton of Camden, Harriet B. Bruce of Raleigh, N.C., Snookie Brunson of Columbia, Jacqueline B. Partin of Greenville; eight grandchildren; and seven great–grandchildren.

RALEIGH R. BURNO

Funeral services for Raleigh Roland Burno, 78, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Burno died Wednesday, May 28, in the V.A. Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Darlington County, on Nov. 30, 1924, to the late Roland and Elizabeth Pough Burno. He served in two branches of the Armed Services, the United States Navy 1943–1946 and the United States Army from 1949–1952, and was honorably discharged from both branches.

Survivors include one daughter, Rosalind Burno of Florence; two sons, Lionel Burno (Rena) of Norfolk, Va., Pierre Burno (LaToya) of Philadelphia, Pa.; one uncle, Joseph Burno (Maybelle) ; three sisters, Mildred Burno of Hartsville, Marva Serrano (Luis) of Norfolk, Va., and Carrie Hughes (William) of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Albert Burno of Worcester, Mass.; grandchildren and great–grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

LEVERN BYRD

Levern Byrd, 87, died Monday, June 2, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 413 Rice Street, Hartsville.

ERNEST ADAMS

Graveside services for Ernest Adams, 60, will be held at 10 a.m. today, June 4, 2003, in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home with the Rev. Frederick Yebuah officiating.

Mr. Adams died Tuesday, May 20, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Sylvester and Nettie Joe Adams. He was a graduate of Butler High School.

Surviving are a brother, Harris Adams of Lydia and an aunt, Mamie Jefferson of Darlington.

JOHNNIE W. SPORTS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Johnnie Wayne Sports, 56, will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 4, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Mechanicsville Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Sports was born in Charleston, a son of Fannie Belle M. Sports and the late William Franklin Sports. He was an Army veteran and served his country in Vietnam. He was a member of Black Oak Hunting Club. Mr. Sports retired fro ESAB in Florence and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Judy R. Sports of the home; a son, Robert (Jessica) Sports of Darlington; four daughters, Amy (Robin) Taylor, Dawn Sports, Donna (Gene) Lamb, Jessie (Frankie) Tanner, all of Darlington; seven grandchildren, Wayne Eaddy, John Howle, Ashley and Michelle Lamb, Michael Taylor, Robert Jr. and Shade Sports; and many special nieces and nephews. Mr. Sports was loved by many family and friends, too many to name, and will be dearly missed by them all, especially his animals.

ANN C. GAINEY

CHESTERFIELD — Funeral services for Ann Gulledge Crowley Gainey, 56, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Lower Macedonia Baptist Church Family Life Center with interment in Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mrs. Gainey died Friday, May 30. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Johnny and Mary Elsie Crowley Gulledge. She was a graduate of Coker College and was owner and operator of Ann Gainey's Accounting and Tax Services. She was also an instructor at Northeastern Technical College. Mrs. Gainey was a member of WOW Lodge 1102 and a faithful member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church where she served as treasurer, director of the College Scholarship Fund, choir member, and former Sunday school teacher. She was first married to the late Perry H. Crowley and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Legrand and Johnny Gulledge and two sisters, Pauline Lewis and Naomi Crowley.

Survivors include her husband, Gladd Gainey of the home; two daughters, Melinda Ann C. (Bryan) Sellers and Angie C. (Kevin) Thurman, all of Chesterfield; four grandchildren, John Michael and Brittany Crawley and Mary–Kaitlin and Leah Thurman; two brothers, Weldon Gulledge of New Port, N.C., and Chuck Gulledge of Cheraw; four sisters, Josephine Board of Cheraw, Virginia Smith of Asheboro, N.C., Marie Ballard of Mooresville, N.C., and Marilyn Brown of Statesville, N.C.; also a large number of beloved family and friends.

ARDELLA SLATER

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Funeral services for Ardella Slater, 79, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, N.C., with the Rev. Dr. James R. Samuel officiating. Burial was held at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens, directed by Long & Son Mortuary Service of Charlotte, N.C.

Ms. Slater died Tuesday, May 27 at Wesley Care Center.

She leaves to miss her love and caring ways two daughters, Eunice R. March (Willie) and Doris Campbell (Ted) , both of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Anthony T. C. Redfearn (Elaine) of Charlotte, N.C. and William E. Redfearn (Tayeba) of Troy, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 17 great–grandchildren; and one sister, Christine McCoy (James) of Hartsville.

WILLIE SMITH

Willie Smith, 76, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 3309 New Hopewell Road, Darlington.

ANNIE W. LIDE

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Annie Wicker Lide, 105, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, in the chapel of Bethea Baptist Home officiated by the Rev. Henry Yarborough and the Rev. T. E. Vaughn. Interment followed in Grove Hill cemetery.

Ms. Lide died Thursday, May 29, in a Florence nursing home. She was born Nov. 2, 1897, in Sanford, N.C., daughter of the late Alexander and Martha Redding Wicker. She worked for Dixie Cup as a supervisor. Ms. Lide was a member of First Baptist Church in Darlington.

Surviving are her nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Bethea Baptist Home, PO Box 4000, Darlington, SC 29540.

VIRGINIA K. MOSES

Funeral services for Virginia K. Moses, 67, were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Second Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funereal Home.

Mrs. Moses died Tuesday, May 27, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Hattie Kelley. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County.

Mrs. Moses was a member of Second Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board and in the Senior Choir and was retired from Coker Pedigreed Seed Company.

Surviving are four daughters, Ann (Lee) Segars and Sylvia Moses, both of Hartsville, Gracie (Tim) Clavon and Deloris Charles, both of Bishopville; a son, Robert Moses Jr. of Hartsville; four sisters, Mary Josey, Rosa (Eugene) Little, Evola Dargan, all of Hartsville, and Cilla Peters of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Charlie Kelley Jr. of Hartsville and Levester Kelley of Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; six sisters–in–law; three brothers–in–law and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MARION BISHOP

Funeral services for Marion Bishop, 66, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bishop died Friday, May 30, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Fred and Juanita Alford Evans Sr. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Young Ladies Society, Mighty Wonders, Usher Board, Kitchen Committee and the Joist Stock Lodge No. 726.

Surviving are her husband, Leroy Bishop of Hartsville; two daughters, Teresa Hough of Hartsville and Gloria (James) Boon of Springdale, Md.; two sons, Terry (Doretha) Bishop and Toney (Theola) Bishop of Hartsville; two godsons, Melvin Jackson of Hartsville and Robert Ings of Lithonia, Ga.; two adopted daughters, Angel Bonaparte and Kim Bess of Hartsville; adopted sons, Johnny McLeod Jr. and Sam Davis, both of Hartsville; three sisters, Eula Thompson and Fannie Bonaparte of Hartsville and Annie Lee (Clarence Sr.) Ings of Society Hill; adopted sister, Mallie Lois Forte of Hartsville; four brothers, Willie Evans Sr., Harmon (Lila Mae) Evans, Robert (Anna Laura) Evans and Fred (Gwendolyn) Evans Jr., all of Hartsville; a special friend, Millie (Ernest) Jackson of Hartsville; and eight grandchildren.
